MCFB is the best vet I've been to for any species. Their sensitivity and skill have been amazing, and their reasonable prices plus the fact that they work with Palomacy, are super helpful when you've suddenly become pigeon rescuers. So far our King Pigeons have seen Dr. Speer, who's just awesome (and apparently world famous!). Every time I've gone in Dr. Speer and everyone else there have gone above and beyond what I could have ever expected. It's well worth driving an hour to get there, and I wouldn't think of taking Watermelon and Cantaloupe anywhere else! When they're sick it's good to know they're in the best possible hands. Read Less

I can't thank Dr. Speers and MCFB enough.  We are in MN and recently rescued a pair of juvenile ring neck doves from a bad pet store situation.  They both have severe splay legs and abnormal feet/toes.  There are several avian certified vets in our area, but only one with enough experience to even evaluate the pair, and unfortunately they are not taking new patients.  Dr. Speers works with a pigeon and dove rescue in the Bay area that we follow on FB (Palomacy).  The founder of Palomacy was kind enough to reach out to Dr. Speers, and he was gracious enough to do an email consultation, as well as a referral to the very vet we were unable to get in to.  If MCFB and Dr. Speers were closer, we wouldn't even consider going anywhere else. Bird owners in the Bay Area are extremely fortunate to have access to the specialized veterinary expertise available at the Medical Center for Birds. This review is long overdue -- I brought my elderly white Homer, Peter, in because his banded leg had swllen, and the band he had been wearing for 13 years without issue was now cutting into his leg. He needed to have the band cut off and the leg cleaned and treated, and a tiny boot was fashioned for his foot so it would heal properly. In-patient hospital care was required for a few days while he recovered. Because he is elderly, to minimize stress he was permitted to have his mate with him during his stay. It is now two years later, and at the age of 15, Peter struts happily around his aviary, and you would never know he was once injured. I am extremely grateful that Peter was a benificiary of all the good work, care and compassion available at The Medical Center for Birds. The staff is top-notch, and for the expertise and quality of the services, the medical center is a tremendous value. Hands down, by far the BEST avian hospital ever!!! Dr. Speer and his staff are ALL amazing! I've taken my Meyers Parrot and chickens here. I've seen Dr. Fitzgerald,  Dr. Olsen, Dr. Speer and Dr. Murphy... I enjoy all their unique techniques.. epically with my little WC blue polish Violet and her bumble foot shoes. HA! Yes I said shoes... Violets feet are completely healed and we didn't need surgery. With the changes recommended from the Dr.s Violets shoes have been off almost a year, with no reoccouring issues! Dr. Fitzgerald also treated a little sun conure that I unknowingly bought from a horrible back yard breeder and treated her in ICU for APV Polyomavirus.. unfortunately she didn't make it but Dr. Fitzgerald did everything she could for my little bird and made her as comfortable as possible. Medical Center for Birds is the only avian hospital I trust with my feathered flock! If your debating on where to take your birds, look no further! Call and make an appointment, you can thank me later. ;) Read Less

Screw this place! My mother took her cockatiel, bella, there and she almost died. The vet tech was doing a routine blood test and bella was squirming. My mother offered to help hold her but the vet tech declined and proceeded to puncture a major sac in the neck. Bella starting bleeding heavily and had to be held for several hours in intensive care to stabilize. Then when my mother went back to pick the bird up, the vet told her that this kind of thing was very normal and common and then had the nerve to charge her for the full office visit and tests (yeah, seriously, and it was over $200). And btw, this kind of thing is NOT normal, not at all. It's very rare to do something like that and it's deeply incompetent. Look, I get accidents happen but this could have been prevented. And the fact that the vet isn't taking responsibility for it is much more unsettling. Bella is very lucky she didn't die. I know that avian vets are hard to find but this guy just isn't worth it. I brought my homing pigeon here for a check-up after some concern about her general health. After a discouraging and upsetting first experience with an avian vet, I had high standards for the next place I'd trust with my bird and chose MCFB because Palomacy Pigeon & Dove Rescue recommended them. This place is wonderful. It makes an enormous difference when the staff members are genuinely friendly and compassionate and every single person that I met gave me that same impression, from the receptionist to the doctors and techs. I was worried about my pigeon's health and knew little about her background because she was a rescue bird. Dr. Murphy was immediately able to determine that my bird was much older than our previous estimate, and she handled her gently and spoke to her as if she was a human child. It's easy to see that she cares a lot about birds and their owners. She was fantastic and very easy to talk to.I have nothing bad to say about my experience here. It's almost 2 hours away by public transit and almost an hour away by car, but I will be bringing my birds here in the future! Read Less

They all gave them so much love and attention, let me visit them, gave them time to fly out of the cage, called me to keep me posted on their health and well-being, and were amazingly gentle and calm with them. Its obvious, when I brought them home, that they had a great time and werent stressed. Sometimes I think our Severe Macaw, Syrah doesn't want to come home. All of the techs are very good with the birds and obviously enjoy their job. We are very picky where we board Syrah and so we drive over an hour to the Medical Center for birds knowing that she is happy and in safe hands while we are away. I started a rescue for pigeons & doves in 2007 (Palomacy Pigeon & Dove Adoptions) & we take in many weak, sick & injured birds in need of veterinary care. Over the years, we have tried most every avian vet in the Bay Area. Some we never use anymore. One we use at every opportunity- Medical Center for Birds. It's a long (or very long) drive in most cases but we figure out the transportation challenges so that our birds (and the volunteers & adopters who love them) can have the benefits of their care. WE LOVE EVERYONE AT MCFB! MCFB provides the best care, best service, best support & best cost - all at the same practice. The vets are all amazing- incredibly knowledgeable, dedicated, compassionate. They go above & beyond for us with every single bird. I wish I had a doctor for myself that I trusted so much. And these amazing vets are supported by an incredibly caring & conscientious team of staff from the receptionists to the vet techs. Often there will be one or two outstanding members of a team but rarely do you find an entire team of peak performers & everybody at MCFB is an MVP.! We are not an easy client- we bring them lots of badly jacked up, down & out rescued pigeons & doves, usually with no history or background, & we always need maximum care with minimum budget. I cannot believe how kind & supportive & helpful everyone at MCFB always is! They are the real deal. If your bird needs a vet, bring them to MCFB. They & you will get the very best of care. Read Less

A very nice facility. Cordial and very helpful women at the desk. I brought my Rhode Island Red lady in as she was suffering from Egg Yolk Peritonitis. The cocky young vet that I happened to get potluck wanted to perform surgery on my lady. In short, I refused surgery and wanted something less invasive. This young vet told me he could not help us. So I went home and dosed my lady with antibiotics. She survived the EYP this go round. So obviously, a less invasive route can sometimes be useful. If I could give 10-stars, I wouldn't hesitate to do so. I am so appreciative of the amazingness that radiates from this clinic and we will be forever patients. After having a scary 1st egg incident happen to our 1-year old cockatiel, Weezy, we went to see Dr. Speers as soon as possible. He was so calm, informative, funny, and had Weezy engaged. Rather than rushing to the next patient, he took his time to show us some foraging techniques and we openly discussed diets and Weezy's aftercare. RVT Sara came in to discuss pellet types, oral medication application, aftercare, and so much more. Sara also didn't make us feel rushed one bit. She was calm, informative, and moved at our nervous, inquisitive pace. Linda took our initial appointment and had to hear me blubber from being a nervous mom and Janet, whom was up front to greet us, was super friendly, calm, and so loving to our Weezy. Hand down - WE-ARE-FANS. We will recommend all our friends and bird owners to take their feathered babies to Medical Center for Birds. I have never seen so much care and empathy displayed by any business in my life, not to mention, a vet.Jagoo, one of our conures, had a bad accident.  Her beak had dislocated from crashing into something fast, which is pretty serious in its own... but her behavior made it clear she was in a lot of pain, and from the looks of it, ready to pass out or worse, any time.I live in San Francisco, so it's a far drive.  Not a single avian vet (or any other vet) would see us late on a Friday afternoon.  Medical Center for birds STAYED OPEN for us over an hour late that day, kept all their staff on site, just so they could still tend to Jagoo. She was handled with exceptional care.  Everything was explained to me in a straight forward way;  Dr. Olsen gave get pain killers and anti inflammatory, which helped the her beak pop back into place overnight (a rare and lucky thing to happen).  Otherwise, they were prepared to fix it following Anesthesia in the morning.I can't imagine a better place to take care of your featherly friends and companions.Although far out of my way, I'll be taking both our Conures there from now on for their regular check ups. Dr. Speer is the best and the rest of the staff here is really great. After having my bird over-diagnosed at a bird hospital here in the city and faced with deciding whether or not to go forward with expensive, stressful tests I sought a second opinion from Dr. Speer. I am so thankful that I did because it ended up that there was nothing wrong with my bird except that she needed to lose a few grams. This hospital takes a holistic approach that includes a heavy emphasis on behavioral / social approaches to bird care. And if something is really wrong with your bird, they have all the latest technology on hand to help deal with the problem. This is a ""birds only"" practice- no rats, lizards, guinea pigs, dogs, or cats- and they know their stuff. Totally worth the drive for me from San Francisco, because I love my pet! Read Less

After failing miserably to get care for our very ill pet chicken, we found out about this place.  Dr. Geoff figured out the issue right away and provided us with a bevy of information to keep the rest of our girls healthy as well.  There is simply nowhere else in the Bay Area that can provide the level of avian care that these folks can.  It is absolutely worth the drive from SF.  Don't even consider going elsewhwere. Read Less

The staff went above and beyond the call of duty caring for my budgies. They all gave them so much love and attention, let me visit them, gave them time to fly out of the cage, called me to keep me posted on their health and well-being, and were amazingly gentle and calm with them. Its obvious, when I brought them home, that they had a great time and werent stressed. Dr.Speer answered all my questions and took extra time to explain to me aftercare procedures for my feather-plucking budgie. Ive also never seen someone handle budgies as well as he does! Read Less

What a fabulous place to board your bird! The attention your feathered friend will get might be even more than at home. The birds talk to each other (in our language) and laugh all day long. Read Less

I live on Hawaii Island where avian veterinarians are in short supply. Our one doctor who is most knowledgeable was doing the best possible. My blue and gold macaw was in trouble. Having a previous relationship with Dr. Speer I decided to fly my bird back from HI to CA. What happen to listen to your patient and the use of a lower cost less invasive method? I may return in the future, but request a different more experienced vet. Read Less

We're actually looking forward to our follow up visit in 3 weeks and just left them yesterday!Thank you, MCFB! Read Less

Read Less
