I do not share in the same "good experience " as others claim to have. I took my boy here on a high recommendation by a coworker. By furbaby had been urinating brown/blood x1 day and I called and made an appt. They had me wait an extra day. By this time it had been 3 days. My main concern was he may have cancer. We saw "Dr.Dave" I made it very clear my furbaby history, what last 3 days consist of, what a previous vet tech stated. I was told multiple times "he looks fine to me" "he doesn't look like he has cancer" "if hes eating that's good, hes fine" I asked 10x please is this cancer, what tests can be done, I dont want him to suffer. Again I was told labs would be done and he would call me in 2 days with results. Meantime I was given nausea meds and antibiotics. Come Monday I was td he only had acute pancreatitis and keep feeding him. As a nurse I know you should not feed a person with pancreatitis so why feed a dog?? Dr.Dave said dogs are different, if hes hungry food him. He then said I need to schedule my dog to have surgery for a "embedded foreign body" in his side. After 5 days he was not any better. I called office, was told to continue giving antibiotics as that's what Dr.Dave ordered. I was also told to come purchase and additional 2 weeks of antibiotics costing another $100. By this point my 15min office visit I was charged $622! My discussion with Dr.Dave was less then that. My dog was taken to "the back" to be examined and brought back and that's it. 8 days after my visit with Dr.Dave I woke up to my precious furbaby dead. I then took him to a vet in Long Beach, had a necropsy completed and was told my baby died from cancer! A tumor the size of a fist on his spleen, that ruptured his spleen and my baby bled out! I was then told the labs Dr.Dave completed would have shown some signs. In addition, I asked about this "foreign body" that he insisted I schedule surgery to have removed. I was told nothing was there! Nothing! So he squeezed the heck out of the side of my boy, left red/purple Mark's and all for nothing! He also said he was obtaining a culture and to this day, never got any results! Another lie! I'm beyond hurt, upset and feel extremely scammed out of $622. Dr.Dave was quick to rack up a bill for really nothing! I made it clear from the time he walked into the exam room if this was cancer I did not want my boy to suffer and what can be done. Multiple times I was told it's not cancer. Just a UTI. I stressed I did not want my dog to suffer. That's exactly what Dr.Dave let my dog do. He disguises me! If he didn't know, say you dont know! Dont feed someone a line of BS and scam $622 and let a poor animal suffer and die. $600 later at another vet 2 hrs away to find out my boy had cancer and have him cremated. I will make sure everyone I know hears what happened! Your "awards" are meaningless in your lobby! You preyed on the love I have for my pet and used that to make some money. That is inhumane! I wish I could give 0 stars! DO NOT go here!!! I dont even know where to begin with everything that went wrong with this unprofessional staff-- from owner, manager, drs, vet assistants, even receptionists!! To say the least, one of my cats was given vaccinations without my consent... a medication was then prescribed to a different cat without proper instructions from the dr, which ended up killing my cat 😥 When I called in panic for my sick cat, before she passed, there was no concern and I was placed on hold, and then hung up on! I tried getting in touch with the manager for months after my cats death and all I got was that "she's busy". When I finally mentioned I was going to get an attorney, the manager agreed to speak with me and was short and rude. They refunded me for the unauthorized vaccines for one cat and for the exam and medication for my other kitty that died from their lack of communication and professionalism. They also wrote me a letter telling me to take me business elsewhere and never to return! ..As if i'd ever go there again! If you love you pet, take them elsewhere-- where the staff actually cares about our fur babies. Read Less

The worst experience I have ever encountered!! Tracy trated me aweful with no reason. She needs to learn to treat customers with respect. Seen how she treated me I desided to walk away with my dog- at this point I did not feel that I can trust my dog to stay over night at this place. If this is how I got treated knowing that I can voice my concerns, I can only imagine how the animals may be treated. After seven days of feeling aweful of how I was treated I decided to call and I spoke with the manager. The manager was "nicer" but she made it clear that she did not cared to loose a customer, as it was "just another dog". Read Less

I love the doctors at this animal hospital.  They spend time with you and they truly care about your pet.  Dr. Dave is our favorite and he has seen all of my dogs, past and present, as well as my tortoises when they need to be checked out.  Doctors are always courteous, caring, and explain everything to the owner. The only complaint I have it their 24 hour refill policy.  Sometimes you don't realize you won't have enough medication through the weekend, but if you call on a Friday or Saturday, you are usually out of luck on getting a refill until Monday.  Kind of a problem if your dog is in pain.  Hope they find a way to better service their patients on this level.  I understand they need to review a chart, etc. for the refill, but most doctors wouldn't let their patients be without their meds for 2-3 days. I've been coming here for years. I took in my brothers cat who was partly feral. She could not be kept inside because she clawed at the windows, curtains, etc. Would meow loudly and destroy all the furniture she could. She would attack my chihuahua and claw him up. She killed so many birds! She was an avid hunter. I tried behavior modification, love, treats, etc. Finally decided to have her declawed. Not an easy decision for me. It cost $400. The female vet performed the surgery. One of her paws got infected after the surgery but antibiotics cleared it up. Then her left paw grew back all the claws. Her right paw grew back 2 claws. The vet offered to do the surgery again for free except I would have to pay for the anesthesia again. I didn't want to put the kitty through all that again and besides she'll never climb again with 2 claws on her right paw. She can't climb and kill the birds anymore, but the surgery was definitely botched. No one offered to refund any part of the $400 I spent! A long time customer and now I'll never go back! I am so disappointed that no one offered any compensation. I paid for a service that was not rendered. Why would I subject my cat again to more surgery for perhaps the same botched result. Have to find a new vet now. Very disappointed. I've been a loyal customer for years and Dr. Nyholt is a good vet. My animals always received good care from him, but the female vet obviously doesn't know how to perform a declaw surgery and didn't offer any compensation except another chance to do what she should have the first time. My great dane (10 months) was recently hit by a car, I was distraught and rushed her to the nearest emergency vet. This office has been AMAZING. Above and beyond with bedside service. Dr. Dave explained everything in detail to me and put it into layman's terms so the average human can understand. They are not able to perform the surgery my dog needs, but gave me excellent recommendations. I decided to keep my dog there until I am able to find a surgeon, because I feel so confident with her there and the treatment she is receiving. One of the techs named Tracy has been so sweet and personally contacted me to tell me she was giving my girl extra love. It is the care like that, that will keep me a client here and make sure to refer this place to everyone. It is not just about medical, they are compassionate and truly love animals. :-) THANKS SO MUCH FOR TAKING CARE OF ATHENA! Read Less

I'd like to start by saying that the veterinarians here are terrific, and so is their **medical** support staff.    However, these wonderful, professional people are absolutely betrayed by the borderline psychotic hospital manager, Janis Morgan, who has apparently been there for 28 years.    If the way I was treated by her, especially as a repeat client, is any indication, I am baffled as to how she has kept her job.     If it were my business, she'd have been fired long ago.Drs. Gantenbein and Chambers are first rate, willing to escalate tough cases to specialists when needed, are VERY knowledgable, kind, caring, and very gentle with the animals.    I trust their judgment and hugely appreciate their compassion for both animals and their humans.   I have not, and now will not, have the pleasure of working with Dr. Nyholt.   I can't express enough how much it pains me to be writing this bad review SOLELY because of the hospital manager's jaw-dropping lack of professionalism, her vindictive nature, HORRIBLE behavior, and absolutely stunning disrespect for clients.   It is ENTIRELY because of her abominable behavior that I will not be going back there after a phone conversation with her today that was simply the last straw.    I've NEVER, EVER been treated so badly by ANY business I've ever used, as she has treated us. I have eight cats and an aging dog.   I recently took one of my cats, who had become visibly ill rather suddenly, in to see Drs. Chambers and Gantenbein.    She was a beautiful sixteen year old purebred Birman, whom I had adopted from someone who could no longer care for her.    Sadly, she could not be saved, and we had to euthanize her.   Dr. Chambers did her absolute best to save her, and Dr. Gantenbein was very kind and gentle with her when the time came to let her go, and very respectful of the copious tears for her loss.   To make a very long story short, all we asked of Janis was to work with us with the financial end of it, due to a shocking situation resulting from identity theft that drained our bank accounts to the tune of thousands of dollars. This took place at the same time as our cat's illness.    Our bank is still working very hard to try and resolve their portion of it, and in the meantime, ALL our accounts are completely frozen, with security alerts on our credit files at the three bureaus to prevent any further damage.   That matter is a nightmare.    It is NOTHING though, compared to the inexcusable situation created by Janis's complete and utter lack of anything vaguely resembling professionalism.   When we called her today to tell her that a tiny bit of the theft had been recovered and to go ahead and take the next payment (we had previously made a large payment in cash), she proceeded to THREATEN us, REFUSED TO RELEASE EITHER THE CREMATED REMAINS OF OUR CAT (already paid for) OR EVEN OUR OWN CAGE to us, which was left behind in the confusion the day of my cat's death, until EVERYTHING was completely paid to HER.    She's holding them hostage.    These threats were just the latest in a string of accusations and insults during every conversation we've ever had with her, when all we've been trying to do was to keep her in the loop.     She accused us of deceiving her despite phone calls to keep her apprised of everything happening all along the way.    As soon as we started to see some positive movement resolving the theft, she was the FIRST call we made to start getting bills paid that  had to be put on hold.  The very first one.    We've never asked her for any flexibility before this, ever.      Her accusations, personal insults, rudeness and threats are a TERRIBLE disservice to the fine medical professionals there.       Janis makes it IMPOSSIBLE to be a client there.    I won't go into any of the gory details of everything she said to us, but I wouldn't do that to someone I hated, let alone someone with whom I was expected to be professional.   I don't understand what purpose she thought it served to be so nasty and hateful to people who were obviously trying their best to rectify a situation that was out of their control,  as soon as they were able.    The doctors deserve better support than that, and I refuse to be treated so shabbily.   The animals deserve better.         I'm sure this isn't the first time she's  treated clients this way, and it won't be the last until or unless she finally has the decency to leave.    Do yourself a favor and find another veterinary practice that doesn't tolerate such a lack of professionalism in its administration.   Janis's behavior was unwarranted, and completely unnecessary.   Thanks to her and ONLY her, they've lost a client.   I couldn't in good conscience recommend this practice SOLELY because of Janis.   She's a TOTAL disgrace.UPDATE 5/23/17: At least the THIRD rewrite by the clinic to try and libel me, as it is a bald faced LIE. First, I'd like to stress that the Vets especially Dr. Nyholt are amazing. However, the front staff is dreadful. I've been going to Dr. Nyholt for 20+ and my family went there when they were one of the few vets in the AV. When my 16-year-old dog needed to be put down they didn't have any of his records. Even though I told the receptionist that I was making an appointment to have my dog put down, she begins asking me a litany of questions. Is he neutering? Does he have all of his vaccines? Any health issues? I had found this to be insensitive and unprofessional but I ignored it because I was upset and thought I was over reacting. When I pickup my dogs ashes, there had been some mix up and they could not find them at first. They had been misplaced  While I got my dogs ashes, it was another unprofessional moment that was also insensitive. Last week I called to make an appointment for my cat for a check-up. I called and the receptionist says, "Hello, this is Jen." No mention of AVAH. I figured I had the wrong number. Hung up. Redialed.  "Hello, this is Jen." "Is this AVAH?" "Yes, this is Jen." This isn't how a business should answer a phone. AVAH doesn't have online appointments, so it's reasonable that if people call that a receptionist should say "Hi this 'business name". This is 'name'. How can I help you?"I hope that AVAH can instruct their receptionists a bit better and avoid irrelevant questions after learning a pet is being put down, and how to properly answer a phone if you are a business. We have used this animal hospital for 9 months now and we really love them.  We have seen all three doctors - Dr. Dave, Dr. Nyholt and Dr. Chambers and have no complaints.  We have taken our 2 cats, our 2 dogs, a wolfdog, and a stray pregnant pittie that we found, and this group has been great with them all.  They treat the animals with kindness and the owners with respect.  They even helped us when we had to put our 17 year old pup to sleep in November.  They were so understanding, compassionate and patient with us.  We were in the office for over 4 hours making the decision and saying goodbye.  They set us up with a private room and made a bed on the floor for us to be next to her.  The other thing I love about this group of doctors is that they are willing to recommend some unconventional methods as well- we don't always need surgery or medicine.  I should also add that they are extremely willing to answer all questions - they take their time with everyone.  They are mindful of the cost of tests and medications and will work to find a solution without charging you an arm and a leg.  They may not always be the cheapest place in town, but they are worth every penny. Im am soooo disappointed with this vet. We just adopted a dog that was being surrendered by her previous owners. A lot of paperwork was missing so we were filling in the holes and getting her a license. Everything was going fine until I met the actual vet. The visit was ok but he definitely did not know what he was doing. He asked me if my dog was spayed and my response was i think so but that im not sure. As a vet, he should have offered to check. He had a 5 minute conversation with me about how he wasnt able to check. I had no idea all they had to do was look for a scar. I left the vet thinking all was ok until i got to the shelter to get her a license. They asked me for proof of spay/neuter and I told them I didnt have that. They then told me that the vet can check for me. Thats when i got really upset. Apparently they just check for a scar. My vet went on and on about how hard it is to check and i believed him! The shelter had a vet tech come out to check for me and it was so seamless and she was incredibly sweet. I called the vet to express my frustration and Sara, the receptionist sassed me about being upset. And said i was confusing her. Probably because shes not the sharpest tool. Ive been waiting for a phone call and have yet to receive one from the vet. I will never subject my animals to their horrible service. Read Less

I called yesterday and was able to schedule a convenient appointment for today with the very friendly receptionist. We, Audi and I, arrived a little early. The staff were kind enough to let us in. We signed in. Paperwork for a new patient only took a few minutes. They weighed her and politely asked us to have a seat, it would only be a few minutes. True to their word, we were shown back to a clean and tidy, if cozy, exam room. The tech took her temperature and let me know the dr would be there in a few minutes. Dr. N came to examine her and was very kind to both of us. He patiently answered all my questions and recommended a course of action. I felt that Audi's health was the first priority with extreme consideration of my feelings to treat my newly adopted elderly pet. Now I know why I always bring my furry family here for care. When I was a patron here they had 4 doctors. It was rather like having four mechanics tell you what they think is wrong. (each has a different opinion and they all think the other is incompetent.) After several hundred dollars and still no defined diagnosis, my baby was still severely sick and miserable. The decision was made to put him down. It didn't go well; there were complications, no doctor could be found (despite him saying he'd be right outside the door) during the ensuing death throes and  convulsions. The whole thing was a nightmare.  To add insult,  they then demanded payment on the spot (for services rendered, of course) while I was still shaking in shock. I had two people with me, thank goodness. One of them practically had to carry me out to the car while the other tried not to throttle the unsuspecting money collector. Please- PLEASE don't bring your animals here. Read Less

Although my Pet did not make it through her ordeal, Dr. Nyholt and his staff were the most pleasant and professional group of Veterinarians I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. If there is a such thing as "Bedside Manner" for Veterinarians, then this team of Animal Care professionals definitely set the standard. From allowing me to hold my pet in a private room to say my "Goodbyes", to sending me a Sympathy Card in the mail, signed by all of the staff which had come into contact with pet in the brief moments of her visit, is a testament to their true commitment to the care and well being of Animals. It is rare these days to meet professionals that are not just in it for the money. As for Dr. Nyholt, he must have been a Minister in a past life. He made the passing of my best friend so much more bearable. I am very grateful to have met him, as well as the rest of the staff, in spite of the unfortunate circumstances regarding my pet's passing after poor treatment by another Veterinarian. Should I ever adopt another pet in the future, I will be sure to make the AV Animal Hospital my pet's second home. Read Less

This place is aweful! I brought my dog in for stomache pain, they told me they were at lunch and it was going to be a 100$ emergency visit few.... So this lady comes an takes my dog away from me.. Half an hour later they being is into this room and say there going to do a couple X-rays....a couple is not 5or 6 at 130 for the first an 85 each additional!! They bring us to the back and the dr explains that he can't see anything in the X-ray that could be bothering him and they now want to do surgery on him! Wtf surgery on what? U can't see anything wrong! So I told them to give me my dog back, we get up to the front and they explained that we couldn't do anything until we pay in full for the 5 X-rays they took of the same spot $500. WTF! They basically were not going to give me my dog back because we only had $425.. Anyways we paid what we had $425.00 and they said we could bill u....Ok I get my dog back and he couldn't even walk they had sidated him so much... Wich I did not understand since he  said he couldn't find a problem...That was at about 2:00...So I get my dog home, and by 9:00 the sadation was wearing off an he was just panting on the floor. He had a heart attack or stroke my my arms about 9:30.....I could belive it. Broke my heart .I called the vet the next day and told them what happend, with no remorse the girl on the phone says well ur still liable for ur bill of $75.00 I told her my dog DIED! I shouldn't have to pay for u guys nor finding anything wrong with him.Needless to say I have just revived a bill from the collection agency for 83$... And I still think that this place is a crappy office with bitchy staff and I will never ever take any of my animals hear again. While the vets are very nice, there's just something not right when they SPAY/NEUTER animals. I have rescued cats. Two of my female cats were spayed there, and it looked horrendous. Never have I seen someone do such a butcher job. One was so bad that we took photos in case it got worse and something happened to the cat. Recently I had a male cat neutered. His whole genitalia was caked in blood when I got him back! After wearing the safety cone for 10 days, he cleaned himself, but now he has a scab back there that bleeds sometimes. I've called to inquire but the doctor isn't in yet, so this cat is definitely on his way to a new animal hospital. I recommend this hospital for minor things (vaccinations, and such), but I DO NOT RECOMMEND them for surgeries like spaying/neutering~ they do a butcher job. Read Less

We have been bringing our pets to Dr. Dave for over 20 years. In that time I have never had reason to question his knowledge base, his professionalism, or his caring attitude. He is always gentle with our pets, especially the new ones, giving them an opportunity to get a feel for him before he begins an exam or treatment, often sitting on the floor with his furry patient so that they are more comfortable and at ease. In 20 years I have never seen him lose patience with any animal or raise his voice. Dr. Dave has always been willing to share care tips and make suggestions, when appropriate, to save a little money. I have to wonder about the agenda of ""thee gadget"" because I've never experienced anything like that on any visit with Dr. Dave. When our big dog was diagnosed with a tricky cancer, Dr. Dave found us an excellent specialist and kept in touch to see how things were going - something I consider above and beyond the standard of basic care. We were so fortunate to find Dr. Dave when we moved to Palmdale and I would highly recommend him to anyone. Read Less

This was the worst experience we have ever had with a vet; I strongly recommend going somewhere else if you care at all about your pet and their wellbeing. My wife brought our 8 week old guinea pig in to be looked at after we had a concern of a possible fungal infection close to his eye; we researched online and found it would be best to bring him to a vet to properly identify the issue. First, Dr. Dave thought he was a Chinchilla, the only similarity was color; our little guy is gray but looks just like a guinea pig, small ears, no tail and all. To be a “qualified” guinea pig vet, his ignorance was appalling. Second, before even inspecting his eye he took a razor knife and scrapped a few layers of skin off around his eye, causing him to scream and bleed excessively, he then yelled at our little guy for squirming. He handled the little guy roughly and had no patience or compassion. Third, my wife asked if he could show her how to trim his nails properly, he picked him up and attempted to trim his nails, then said it didn’t need to be done; but charged us for it anyway. Forth, after his inspection he still didn’t know what was wrong with our little guy, if anything, but still insisted we buy a $33 medication which would treat both mites and fungus. Finally she left the place very upset and had to pay $99.50 for his bad and cruel service not knowing anything more about our little guy’s condition than she did when she got there. This was the worst experience ever with a vet and we will NEVER return. Read Less

I first meet Dr. Nyholt and the staff of Antelope Valley Animal Hospital in the unfortunate case of my friends dog was hit by a car. Dr. Nyholt and the staff took excellent care of him. I next had the opportunity to interact with the staff when my friends other dog had a run in with her little friend and he opened up her eye brow. Nyholt and the staff did an excellent job with her. She has had to see him twice for different things. Both times she has taken very good care of. Recently I had a sick little kitten that Dr. Greg took very care of. Sadly she passed, but NOT by anything that was done there. She passed from natural causes (disease). In her final hours she was treated very well and in a very caring manner. Everything that could have been for her was. Dr. Greg did an excellent job. I would recommend AVAH to everyone that I know and everyone who needs any animal care. Just to preface this, I have worked as a veterinary medical assistant at a very successful clinic up on the central coast while I was in college and contemplating veterinary school. My pets are family to me and I have poured hundreds of dollars in to the care of my snake and other creatures. When I took my 8 month old puppy to this veterinarian to get him neutered, everything seemed relatively normal. But when I went to go pick him up, I noticed in his chart that they put a danger sticker in his chart, which means that he is a potential hazard to the staff. They then asked me to go get him because they couldn't handle him. I was led to their holding area, and was sorely disappointed in what I saw. Their dog kennels were extremely dirty and were in need of some repainting as well, at the vet I worked at the kennels were extremely cleaned (we had to scrub them down very well every day) and we provided the dog both a towel and blanket to lay. He didn't have a blanket even between him and the concrete. He was shivering in the cage, but I just took him home and took care of him. He is a very large active dog so when his suture sight split open I was not happy. They had used surgical glue, which I know when I worked at the vet they never used on high energy dogs when their surgery site was in such a susceptible area. I took him immediately to a different veterinarian, North Valley Veterinary Clinic, where he received amazing care. They ended up having to staple his neuter site and he had to go on antibiotics, but at this vet they have not once had a problem with aggression with him, so I can only imagine that he possibly had a bad reaction to the anesthesia, which I have seen plenty of. I think that the Antelope Valley Hospital is subpar when it comes to just basic animal care, since they can't seem to handle a rather common problem of an animal that has problems with anesthesia and they don't seem to care much for the comfort of animals exiting surgery. Read Less

Seen how she treated me I desided to walk away with my dog- at this point I did not feel that I can trust my dog to stay over night at this place. If this is how I got treated knowing that I can voice my concerns, I can only imagine how the animals may be treated.

Kind of cool x) Be careful when driving there coming from the west, though. Read Less

On top of the excellent animal care, AVAH is very accomidating to their clients. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT CHOICE FOR VETERNARY CARE IN THE AV. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Read Less

The office staff is helpful to a point, but mainly if you develop a relationship with them or have one prior to going in you will have a better experience. rather the up point of AV Animal Hospital is the personalized approach. I have taken my animals to Nyholt for over 20 years and have been extremely pleased. Now that I no longer live in the AV I still make the hour drive to bring my dog to a vet I trust. Read Less
