I STRONGLY recommend NOT to do business with the Petaluma Veterinary Hospital - a run down establishment which is poorly managed   Not worthy of even one star! The Rohnert Park Hospital is far superior and understands good business practices and common sense. I just used them for another pup about a month ago when we had a night time emergency and had such a great experience. They are pricey but after the insanity of my pup pick up in Petaluma - I will happily pay for the better practice in Rohnert Park. I tried this place because it has the Saturday hours  and was less expensive - the vet was wonderful - the staff was nice. However, they seem to have some clown who calls himself their financial officer - which is silly since they are a small office and just need a good bookkeeper! The building has not been properly maintained which reflects his failure to understand investing in your business and he certainly does not understand our pets are our loved family members. I come to pick up my 13 year old pup and learn this office does not take checks!!! No sign posted for cash/credit cards only anywhere in the office. No mention of this policy when we paid over $300 for the initial visit with a credit card. He does not take Care Credit (which most dentist and vets have been promoting and accepting for years) - he has some unknown alternative option - and they wanted me to go get cash before I could have my injured family member. I just wanted my loved one home and comfy! The bill was around $2300. I wanted to split the payment with cash and credit. I had no problem doing this at the Rohnert Park Hospital in the middle of the night! I have never had a vet - doctor - dentist - hospital who has failed to inform a customer of such a crazy business practice. I will NOT go back to this office and I would NOT recommend it to anyone! And by the way the sign is just tacky, goofy, and looks as run down as the building. Read Less

I just changed to this veterinarian hospital for my pet care for a few reasons. First, my vet of many years sold the practice and I continued to go there but noticed some things I wasn't happy with. So I changed my puppy Gracie to having a checkup and vaccination to there at Pet vet Hospital! I love the staff !! And Dr Cantrell was so efficient and most of all intuitive!! Best Vets around! We started taking our pets there in 1994 when Dr. Czarnecki was working with Dr. T. We had Sarah - yellow lab, and Lance - kitty cat). When Dr. C left then Dr. Smith started and she took great care of Sarah when she came down with bone cancer in 2006. She has a great sense of humor and is very caring and knowledgeable. Took my Puggle Rocky in for a check up yesterday. Everyone there is super nice! The doctor and all the assistants made us feel comfortable. The doctor didn't try to upsell us on unneeded x-rays and tests and they have reasonable prices. This will be Rocky's new vet. Read Less

Our oldest dog is 14 and recently came down with a mystery illness and stopped eating. We were hesitant to take her in to our old vet place because they always seemed to charge an arm and a leg for everything. Our neighbor recommended Petaluma Veterinary Hospital so we made an appointment. They were absolutely amazing. They fit us in right away and were really straightforward on our options, their recommendations, and the costs associated with each. They ran some basic tests and worked with us on a strategy to get our dog back to health without a bunch of unnecessary costs. They also called and checked on her almost every day. I have been taking our animals here ever since I moved to Petaluma, 20 years ago. The staff has changed, but the level of care has not. Two weeks ago I brought in our rather skittish dog, and Dr. SMith got down on the floor with treats and proceeded to give Reba treats and talk to her while she examined her. I have never had a vet do that! She was so kind. I also appreciated that for both of my dogs she gave me an estimate for the work that would be needed, with a high and a low estimate, so at least I didn't  gasp when I got the bill. I made my first visit last Friday and unfortunately it wasn't for a routine checkup.  I fully admit that after moving to Petaluma I procrastinated on finding a new vet and of course found myself in DESPERATE need when my cat got in a fight  and had a huge face wound.  I called PVH based on a recommendation from a friend and was able to get a same day appointment.  From the moment I walked in the door I felt like I was already at home.  Very friendly staff who got my in before my appointment (i was 10 minutes early) and they treated both myself and my cat with the utmost professionalism and courteousness.  They explained what they thought needed to be done and asked for my thoughts/opinions throughout the process.  They also recommended some additional services they thought I needed of which I agreed to a few and put a few off to spread my costs out. I liked how they respected my decisions to push some of the non-emergency items off to a later date and didn't push them on me right then and there!  I will definitely be back! Read Less

We have a little local cat who has adopted us, and she had a wound on her neck that I wanted to have checked out. Got an appointment fairly quickly, and everyone there was so super nice and friendly. I was sort of expecting a scolding for bringing in a non-pet cat, but no, everyone was very sweet and took very good care of her, even if she was pretty freaked out. We recently switched from another local vet to Petaluma Vet Hospital because the previous vet was not taking my dog's tummy situation seriously. I was able to get a late afternoon appointment the next day no problem. Dr. Smith was fantastic on our first visit, she was concerned and took steps to help us figure out what is going on. I had been taking all my animals, both cats & dogs to Brandner Veterinary Hospital for well over 20 years. I became very unsatisfied with the quality of care as well as how I was treated and decided to switch vets. I decided on Petaluma Veterinary Hospital and had been there only one time prior when my beloved dog took a turn for the worse and needed to be put down. I had an appointment for my other dog this particular day and called to see if I could combine both dogs on the same appointment and explained the circumstances they said they could. I was not only putting Sophie down I was also having her cremated. After being by her side as she passed, I was so distraught & crying, I walked up to pay and they said not to worry about the bill which was a few hundred dollars and that we could square up in a few days. They actually let me leave, owing that much money, and I had only been to them one time prior. They didn't know me or my history of payments but they took a chance on me. I've never had a veterinarian do anything like that before and it warmed my heart when they were more concerned with the pain I was feeling at the moment, and the money was secondary. That made a tremendous impression on me and because of that and the great care they provide my animals, they deserve my business and my loyalty. It was days later and I still hadn't received a bill yet so I called and the gal I spoke with said they didn't want to appear insensitive by sending a bill too quickly. I have been bringing my dog here since she was a puppy and I am so pleased that the place was recommended to me. I have met both vets, though over time gravitated to Dr. Smith.  If you are looking for a bubbly chatty vet, this is not the place for you.  However if you are looking for careful competence, thoughtful examinations, and direct answers to your questions... Look no further.  The vets and staff really care about the animals and take good care of us.  Do I sometimes overhear bits about the employees social lives?  Yeah, so?  It wasn't while my pet was being served and it did not affect the professionalism and the quality of service we received.  Our medical doctor even asked Dr Smith to do a strep swab on our dog to protect an autoimmune compromised member of our family.  She hadn't heard if this being done before but was happy to help.  They follow up with a phone call after non-routine visits and I appreciate that type of caring and professionalism.  We are loyal customers.Update: November 2016  This week, I had the pleasure of taking our cat in for a visit with the newest member of the veterinary team, Dr. Cantrell.  She is a wonderful addition to the team and you really can't go wrong with any of the 3 vets!  Dr. Cantrell listened to our concerns, gave a thorough examination and worked with us to optimize care for our kitty and our family in light of the needs autoimmune compromised member of our family.  What a great veterinary office!  I just love it!  They are competent, caring, thoughtful and efficient.  A+! We ended up here after our regular vet took an extended vacation. We needed a set of vaccinations to board her the following week. I called and they fit us in that day. The cost of the visit & vaccines were less expensive than the pet store low cost clinic.They were so nice and understanding, as my shepherd was very scared. Our last vet just held her down and got the job done without showing any care or concern. This place was great. We are so happy to have found them. I'm sorry to hear that others have not rated this provider highly... our experience over the past 15+ years with them has always been great. Today was a special day; we had to send our dear old (very old) black lab onto her next incarnation... it was very emotional, and the staff at PVH were so patient and understanding and kind.
