I went to Slate Creek because of a good review from someone I knew. But like others have experienced... I too was extremely mislead when it came to a quoted total cost of a procedure. Mine was from a doctor that works there part-time. When you financially take advantage of people like that it can bring financial stress as well as negative energy to the people, which in turn, affects the animals. Though the doctors have been okay to be kind to my dogs, I am upset at their office visit pricing. My dog needs 1 injection every 5-6 weeks. Our last injection took literally 60 seconds for him to enter the exam room, be lifted on the table, and given his injection. I was charged the entire office visit price! When I went to make his next appt I asked if this could be waived or reduced. They said no, he was taking up an appt time. I asked if they could schedule us between spots.- I mean really, it took one minute! You can't tell me that's taking up an appt time! They waive the office visit for another injection, so why not this one? He does not need to be examined! If he did, I would happily take an appt time. Things like this make a person feel like like an account, not a client. Don't preach insurance, it's not worth it for this dog. I've called other offices and they were appalled at this practice. Odd. Our Retriever was a rescue and we continuede her care with Slate. Sweet kind vet the first time. Tough, brusque vet the second time. As I was waiting for my pets results. A room to my left eas used toneuter a cat. It screamed in high pitched agony for ten minutes...then they chuckled and continued to say he was calm now. I have never met a more compassionate and honest veterinarian in my life. I have 4 dogs currently (and have had MANY animals prior) and have been to quite a few vets in my day. When I moved to Pollock Pines 3 years ago I searched the internet and looked to locals for a vet recommendation. I am so lucky I found Dr. Betsy Gray. Doctors are knowledgeable and friendly. Unfortunately, receptionist was rude and would not let me ask a simple question without talking over me and getting offensive.  Therefore they have lost my business. We have a vacation home in Placerville since 1999 and Slate Creek is our favorite vet clinic both there and in the city where we live most of the time.  We even would save routine check up work for when we would be able to go to Betsey. She has treated the 3 dogs we have had during that time.  She is very easy to talk to, I think she is fearless in her treatments that the "big city" vets didn't even suggest and that helped our dogs.  She is compassionate, no nonsense, and even the dogs behave better for her than any other vets we have had.   Right now I can't take the one dog we have now to Betsey, but I am asking for her advice and counsel because she is the one vet I truly trust to give me an answer that will be thoughtful, take age, finances, etc into consideration.  I would rather go to Dr Betsey in her country vet office than the new glitzy multi-vet practices. I really wish Dr. Russell would get his own practise. I've been more than happy with HIS services for my OTTB gelding but the staff there REALLY needs to be replaced. I'm still waiting for a call back for an appointment for X-rays, apparently it's my problem that they don't have help on Wednesdays. My extended family & I have used Slate Creek for over 20 years. Vet Betsy Gray is outstanding, works diligently to provide us with a diagnosis, & is incredibly patient & caring. Over the years, we have seen most all the vets in the practice & the time & caring they provide are outstanding. We are a crazy 6 cats and 1 dog family. All our 7 kids go to see Dr. Grey at Slate Creek and we could not be happier or find a better vet. I wish I can give Slate Creek more than 5 stars!! Our beloved dog Nick had a terrible internal tumor. The staff at Slate Creek was so understanding and let us know there was nothing we could do for him that wouldn't put him through more misery. I respect that Dr. Betsy Gray said we were doing the right thing and she would do the same if it were her dog. They made the atmosphere so tender and allowed our other dog Buddy to be in the room to see that Nick was in heaven. It truly was a family affair. I moved into the area in 2001, and I tried a number of vets for my large animals before settling on Slate Creek.  Dr. Vos and Dr. Russell are fantastic, and Sandy, the vet tech, needs a raise.  Whatever she makes, it isn't enough!!I saw one review where the customer complained about being overcharged, but I have found the opposite to be true.  The vets go out of their way to keep prices down, and always discuss with me what procedures they recommend before we proceed.  I have never felt that they recommended anything that was not necessary, and I have even sometimes been the one to encourage them to do higher-priced treatments.They know me well enough, now, to suggest a wide range of options, when applicable, during treatment, and they are always really good about telling when a more expensive procedure isn't necessarily the best choice for the setting.I trust both Dr. Vos and Dr. Russell (AND Sandy) enough that I no longer even feel the need to be there when they are treating my animals (although I enjoy being there, since it is always a learning experience for me), and I would recommend them 100% for large animals.  I don't use them for small animals, only because I had a vet already set up for my dogs before I found Slate Creek, and have been happy with the arrangement.  :) Read Less

Slate Creek Animal Hospital is by far the best animal hospital I have ever been to. In late October I brought my chihuahua, Rosie, in due to a bite wound from another dog, and she ended up passing away. That was literally the worst day off my life, but Slate Creek helped me out so much. They did every thing they could possibly do to save Rosie...when I went to leave, before Rosie had actually passed, a nurse was standing by her petting her little head because she was in so much pain, and when I arrived at the hospital after I had been informed by Dr. Gray of Rosie's condition, Dr. Gray set a chair up for me outside in the sun so I could spend my final moments with her. Finally, a few days before Christmas, I received a letter stating Slate Creek made a donation to UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in honor of my Rosie. So long story short, Slate Creek truely cares about the animals they look after and that to me, is what really matters. Thank you Slate Creek. Read Less

My wife and I have been using Slate Creek for our dogs since we moved to El Dorado County in 1991. I simply cannot say enough about the caring people that work there. You can get treatment at any vet, but ultimately it is the people that make or break a business. They have always served us and our animals with compassion and professionalism.But, my experience goes deeper than that of most customers. As a Chief Officer of the local Fire District, I have had occasion to interact with the vets on the job as well. I have brought pets to their facility that were injured in vehicle accidents where their owners were either deceased or incapacitated, and they never hesitated to attempt to save the life of the pet. I have even had the experience to find one of their vets at the scene of a particularly bad traffic accident, doing what she could for the human patients.Quite simply put, Slate Creek will always be my vet. My girlfriend and I have encountered several questionable practices in a number of visits to Slate Creek in the past several months.  While all of her experiences in years past have been positive, recently, it seems that the hard economic times may be coming to affect the quality of care provided.  We've been overcharged for simple services ($50 for a simple procedure that takes less than $5 of supplies and no more than 5 minutes), and charged for questionable tests.  On the last visit, we were charged over $100 for two X-rays that both my girlfriend and myself could find no medical reason for as medical professionals, and received no rational explanation from the veterinarian.  Sadly, while I would have been happy to refer friends to take their pets to Slate Creek, I now have to warn others to avoid this practice.
