Let me say first that I wanted to like this place. I really did. I was very disappointed in the experience my dog and I had at this clinic. My wonderful regular vet had suggested I take my 6 year old girl here, as her vision has been deteriorating over the last few years. Their initial consult is $300(!). That's a ton of money for me on disability, but I wanted to do the right thing for my dog, and I expected a very thorough exam and a lot of information for that price. I could have gone to El Cerrito for half that price and in retrospect I wish I had gone that route. I did not get my money's worth here in any way, and had a bad experience to boot. They were not busy that I could see that day, so no overt reason for the poor, rushed appointment we had. The tech did a lot of the testing before the doctor ever came in, and while she was sweet, she didn't explain what she was doing or why. After I started asking to know what was going on, she tried to tell me "18 and 18 so that's good" on one test, but I had to ask what test it was and what that meant to get any information. Once Dr. Wiggans came in, I felt that he was hurried, & seemed disinterested in my dog's history or what I might know so far about her condition. He went straight into poking at my dog on the other side of the room. No bedside manner whatsoever. He didn't even introduce himself. He was just clinical and systematic. Clearly they do this all day, but it seems they have forgotten that their clients don't, and owners deserve to be in the loop about what they are doing & looking for. My dog is a part of my family and I hope that care givers will treat us that way. When I said my former vet thought she might have corneal melanosis and 30% vision, he stopped examining her and coldly said, "I'd say she has less than that." That hit me like a ton of bricks. No further explanation came, like how much less. Then he threw out the term "Pannus" and some names of possible meds at me. I was so confused at the medication regimen he gave me, I had to ask the tech to write it down more clearly for me. He had no suggestions for me on where to get the meds for less, as their price on just one was $98 for a 3 week supply. He never told me what my dog's long term outlook was, what would happen if I didn't or couldn't afford to medicate her, what the difference between corneal melanosis & pannus is, nothing. I even had to ask him if surgery was an option. He just offered almost no info on his own & seemed to leave as quickly as he could.I left there SMH. Once I got home, I saw that one of the meds was written on a post-it note, not an actual prescription. One of the prescriptions that they did write for had no strength written on it, which is making it tough to fill. My own vet has had to fix the prescriptions mistakes. They also sent an incomplete report to my vet. Dr W had said my dog had a "scratch" on one eye, but my vet read the partial report they sent & said it was noted as an ulcer, not a scratch. She told me it would have been painful for my dog and it was good that I treated it. He hadn't told me a thing. How do you get that wrong? My vet was kind enough to gently tell me that my dog will eventually go blind, which I should have heard at the clinic, but didn't.She was very unhappy about my experience, & called Animal Eye Care asking that Dr. Wiggans call me directly & answer my questions. Instead, the next morning, I got a call from an unfamiliar woman at Animal Eye Care who had never even met my dog, & further confused me when she told me the complete opposite of what Dr. Wiggins had said about which medication would be best to start with. Her tone was initially quite kiss-up as she pretended to be following up to see how my dog was doing. (For $300 one would expect an actual follow up call, but that's not included it seems). I told her I knew she was calling because my vet asked them to, and the conversation went downhill from there. She suggested Dr Wiggans call my vet directly instead of calling me. Yes, great that's a good plan. Instead, many days later I got an awkward call from Dr Wiggans. He knew at this point that I'm unhappy with the appointment, yet he made no attempt to even find out why I was displeased or apologize for our lousy visit. Now he wanted to answer my questions? He agreed to call my vet directly instead, as I know she is able to explain my dog's condition to me. $300 later, I now have many more concerns about my dog than I did before I went there, I have 2 prescription with errors, & many unanswered questions that should have been handled during the appointment. To top it off, they would have charged me $180 for a recheck on the eye with the scratch or the ulcer. ... $180 more??? Shouldn't a simple recheck be included or be more reasonable when you are paying $300 for one appointment? My vet charged me $80 to stain and recheck her eye. We will neiither be returning nor recommending Animal Eye Care. BLECH! Read Less
