My first experience with Cordova Veterinary hospital was not the experience I was expecting. I originally made an an appointment for my cat to get his vaccinations. A week before I notice he was not acting himself. I brought him in and found out he had a urinary blockage. I was so worried. The staff and Dr. Thorne too great care of Batman and put me and my family at ease. After two nights with a catheter and fluids he is good as new!! Dr Gates saved my Dog's life in 2015 where my vet in my town wrote her off saying she was too old to operate on. Dr. Gates was great, but the second time going there I felt like others, it was all about the money. After they looked over my baby Dr. Jen made me go get my money before she would go any further with treatment, who does this? fyi, my Aussie was freaked out, and so was I, not to mention I drove almost 2 hours to get there, so I was still in shock due to the way my dog just dropped on the floor while trying to harness her. I will never go back (just maybe) unless I get Dr. Gates. She is the owner. I too was charged a lot of money I didn't have, when it was something the dog would had came out of on her own. I told them what I believed what was wrong with her, (because I use to be a volunteer at my local vet out of High School), and it still cost me $600. She has Vestibular syndrome and it is something that you can deal with on your own. Everyone should watch the youtube video on this disease, so you too will know what is going on, because some think it is a stroke, also I witness my dog fall 2 times(who knows if she fell when I was not looking?) on their hard floor, and not 1 person picked her up off the floor, like bones can't break in a dog? My dog could not stand up on her own, at the time she was 50lb. I'm sorry, fire your staff if they don't have the love of animals in their Heart. Dr Gates knows what she is doing, and I only trust her now, but the problem is the staff. There was 1 young person there that was very rude to me, she is very fortunate I didn't sock her one, being I was already over the edge when I arrived after the almost 2 hour ride from the Mountains, in which I live. Great job with Moxie's teeth. I am so happy that we didn't have to pull that 4th premolar, that the Doctor could do a root canal and restoration. While it was more money that I would have paid to have her tooth pulled at our family vet, the extensive work was worth saving the tooth. Thank you Dr. Gates. And Moxie's recheck went very well too. I love this practice. They took wonderful care of my grandmas teacup Chihuahua, until my grandma passed and my mom took the dog. They were deeply saddened by my grandmas passing seeing as she frequented their office so much for monthly visits. I now go here with my cats, and they are always so gentle and kind to them. They are a little pricey, but they work with you on attempting to take the most cost efficient routes first, or helping you call other pharmacies for prescriptions. I have yet to bring my dog because he's had no need, but they're the first people I would call to handle my shy, rescue boy. Read Less

I took my 10 year old Ragdoll in because she had an ingrown claw. She was very unhappy in the car but calmed down as soon as we walked in.She was a good girl and very calm when being treated. The Doctor and staff were very friendly and very gentle. I would highly recommend Cordova Veterinary Hospital. Read Less

If you have sticker shock from one of their estimates, please read below.While the staff is friendly enough, it's not just about that.  I took my cat here, to have them look at his teeth.  The exam was $55, the rabies shot $26 and the FVRCP (required if I was going to have him come back for surgery) was $34.  OH, and I had to pay $3.85 for them to dispose of the bio-hazard.  The doctor came in and when I went to shake her hand, she tells me she's sick so I might not want to shake her hand.  I suggested she wear a mask, because she's touching all the same door handles I was touching.  They prepared an estimate for me, as the thought was my cat needed at least 2, and possibly 4 teeth extracted.  There is a low and high estimate and I was floored by some of the fees.  The low was $1,800 and the high was $2,340.  This included a biopsy and pathology of a small lump on my cats jawline.  Well, I decided to get a few other estimates and to ask the Sacramento SPCA for a referral.  I'm SO Thankful I did.  The SPCA gave me a link: keepyourpet.com.  I found an amazing vet VCA Sunset Animal Hosptial.  They are amazing and their estimate:  $820!  It pays to shop around and just goes to show that not all Vets are out there ripping people off.  I wouldn't take another animal to this location. The office is not in the best part of Rancho but they have a nice and clean facility. The front desk ladies and vet techs are all very friendly. They call to confirm appointments and check up on the pets after specific treatments/services. The Dr. is personable and helpful. The charges for services seems reasonable as well. Terrible expertise with regard to cat diagnostics. Expensive unrelated testing. We were sold medication and equipment that we could not use. Management (Rebecca) has no moral conscience and does not consider people at all above her poor business practices. My husband and I attempted to resolve this with the management, but there was no consideration or acknowledgement that animals present different needs. This was an easy customer service fix, but there is no interest in building relationships with the community based on our experience. Their one-size-fits-all approach is a disservice to our pets and we will be going elsewhere. (If you are near Goldorado Animal Hospital in Cameron Park, Dr. Prince is the most compassionate, humane doctor we have ever worked with.) I would not recommend this facility. Read Less

Dr. Melissa Gates and her staff provide the best service at reasonable prices and I trust them completely with the care of our dogs and cats. This Veterinary Hospital is amazing. I was having to bring my 10 year old Pitt mix here do some pain she was having in her hips. They went over every option we had, we started a medication plan for her. But to no avail nothing seemed to help her. I cant remember our vets name for Zeva but she was amazing with us. I knew by the third visit that we were going to have to start the end of life process because she was just in so much pain. Our vet walked us through the whole process and let us have a more privet comfortable room to say our good bye's. She was very accommodating while i was grieving over my loss , gave me as much time as i needed. They even worked with us on payment for her end of life process. I will deferentially be taking all my animals here the staff is amazing. To top it off today in the mail i received a card with foot prints of my baby and sweet note from the staff. This is the worst veterinary hospital I've ever seen in my life (including doctors and staff). It's all about the money in this place. They'll sell you the most expensive treatments whether your animal needs or not. The staff is rude and unprofessional and neither the doctors nor the people that work there seem to actually like animals. They treat them with no compassion or care, as badly as they treat their owners. Took my dog for surgery, they didn't operate on him as scheduled, but 7 hours later without ever calling me. I had to call to check on his status. Then they were in a hurry for me to pick him up because they wanted to go home. The day after the surgery they didn't even call to check on him, as every single clinic does.They charge you for the surgery follow-up visit (no one else does), but in this case, Dr. Gates didn't even have time for the follow up visit. She recommended a follow-up visit two weeks after the surgery, but couldn't see the dog for about 4 weeks. Horrible place, horrible people. Incredibly expensive. They'll change their original estimate in a second and for no reason. They'll get as much money from you as they can, and couldn't care less about the animal. I'll take my dog for a follow-up to another doctor, another clinic. Please don't take your animals to this place. Don't do that to them, and to yourself. Read Less

We recently took our rescue Pomeranian to Dr. Gates at Cordova vet. Our dog's name is Gandhi, and Gandhi, since we rescued him, had terrible breath and was skittish anytime we would get close to his muzzle. Our regular vet at the time (not Cordova vet) did two separate dental procedures (full sedation, cleaning, inspection) and found nothing wrong--just some plaque, some gingivitis that was easily controlled, etc. But it didn't make sense to us... Gandhi was acting even more scared of being touched around the head, he was hiding under the bed, and even after the cleanings, his breath was terrible. Then I remembered that one of our other rescued Pomeranian's (Poppy) had some similar issues (about 8 yrs ago). A different vet at the time (now retired) immediately referred us to Dr. Melissa Gates at Cordova Veterinary Hospital. The dental work that Dr. Gates did on our aged Pom' worked like a miracle--no exaggeration. Dr. Gates did a full sedation/full dental work. It turned out that the majority of Poppy's teeth were rotten under the gum line and had other nasty teeth problems. Dr. Gates extracted a number of teeth, stitched him back up, and from that point on Poppy was a much happier, healthier dog. So back to Gandhi. Our vet is saying that Gandhi's bad breath, the plaque, etc. are normal, that the Pomeranian breed is prone to this because of small mouths/crowded teeth. But my wife and I just didn't accept it. So we took Gandhi to Dr .Gates at Cordova vet. The experience working with Dr. Gates and the staff, and the results for Gandhi were amazing. Dr, Gates did an initial consultation and thoroughly explained what she would do, what might be need to be done, cost breakdown, etc. Very thorough, highly professional. Gandhi went back a few days later for the full sedation and dental work and for Dr. Gates to see what else might be going on in his mouth. The next day after this treatment, Gandhi was a new dog. We were amazed. Dr. Gates had discovered a number of problem teeth that required extraction (she even had photos of before/after the extractions so you could clearly see what was done). She ended up extracting 7 teeth. Since then, Gandhi has changed dramatically! He now wants to be handled more, wants to be close to us, and we can touch him anywhere, including rubbing his teeth and gums to keep them clean. He has more energy and is just all around much happier dog! So that's two of our Pom's that Dr. Gates has done amazing dental work on with dramatic results. I cannot say enough good things about her and her office.We received an entire packet of info prior to Gandhi's dental work explaining all the details and other helpful information. Dr. Gates was a true pleasure to work with. Treatment was followed up by calls from her office to be sure Gandhi was well. In short, Dr. Gates saved Gandhi from a miserable life of mouth pain and a much shortened life as the poisons from the decayed teeth went into his stomach and system. She truly saved Gandhi. Counting Poppy, that's two rescue dogs that Dr. Gates has "rescued" for us through her expertise and care for animals. I highly recommend Dr. Gates for dental/mouth problems for your pet, or even just for a consultation so you know what your options are. Excellent ServiceI took my Boxer 'Riley' to this hospital and they were all really good with him. He had stopped eating and just wasn't himself. After some blood work and a sample of his lymph nodes it was determined he had lymphoma:( The vet and staff were very supportive. Unfortunately 'Riley' passed away 1 month later. I had a sudden and terminal illness with my dog around the holidays and this office and their staff went out of their way to be caring and humane. They do everything possible to make the final time with your pet comfortable and peaceful. This is a nice, clean office with a true respect for pets. My sweet little girl Molly has been having problems for about 8 years. We found Dr Anderson after changing Vets. She came in on her day off and did the surgery on Molly. She did a wonderful job on Molly's Mouth. The way she explain everything that was done was fantastic even when you get emotional from seeing the pictures and hearing your love one cry in pain. I just want to thank her for taking excellent care of my little girl. Now for the staff they need to take people skill classes. The manager is very rude and uses Curse words very on professional. I will not be going back to this place because of the staff. Sorry Dr Anderson your wonderful but you need to work on your staffs attitudes.Read Less

Always so helpful and kind. It's always good when the Vets and other staff have people skills too! They offered us bottles of water while waiting and always follow up with a call to check up on out kitty. During our appointments, they always talk us through each procedure and are very up front about costs. We had a bad experience at our prior vet, so Cordova is such a breath of fresh air. After our first experience with oral surgery at another veterinary hospital, we were very apprehensive to have to go through it again. The surgery was very difficult on our dog and their care of her after the surgery was worrisome. Your office was recommended to us as "the best dentist around" and after our initial visit we knew you were the perfect fit.  Not only had we found a great dentist but also a wonderful overall veterinarian. The way you and your staff patiently walked us through the entire procedure and the loving care you have shown our pet has been beyond our expectations. Our pet came through this surgery great, it is unbelievable how much easier this surgery was on all of us! We decided to try this hospital for our dog from 2003 on. The office manager, "L" is always rude. Dr. P. was horrible. She tried to push sales for anything, then flat out lied about a price she quoted me and said, "You must have heard wrong". I have excellent hearing and she positively told me a different price! She quoted $25 and the bill was for $100! Of course, I was sent a bill with added interest if I refused to pay. The treatment we paid so much for was a general antibiotic anyway and never solved our pet's issues. Then, later, our usual Vet, Dr Dawn Elsworth-our pet and we loved her- closed. Her calls went to Cordova so we thought we'd try again. Same bad experience. Sell, sell, sell and try to scare you into treatments and tests that are not needed. Then, once the diagnosis was reached that I told them it would be in the first place, they still tried to scare me into other tests that I knew were not needed and treated me like I'm too stupid to know my own pet. I brought my shih tzu there once to get her rabies vaccination and I didn't like how they didn't let me go in with her to get the shot so I never even had the chance to meet the vet. They wanted me to wait in the waiting room. Also the people who worked there were not warm or friendly. The lady in the front seemed like she was in a big hurry to get me out of there and kept on cutting me off . They weren't horrible, but I definitely wouldn't go there again. Read Less
