TLDR; it is illegal for a vet in CA to refuse a prescription (California Veterinary Medical Board, Code of Regulations, section 2032.2C). Don't let this place or any other vet force you to use them or their approved pharmacy in exchange for a prescription.---I've been taking my dog here for a few years now. Last year, when we needed a prescription sent to my dog's pharmacy (who happen to be a Vet-VIPPS-accredited pharmacy), they sent it right away. This morning, I called and spoke with Christy who, after putting me on hold to check their policy, refused to give me a prescription even if I went to pick it up myself. She cited that it was a new policy that customers had to go through the vet or their approved pharmacy.Well, it turns out it is illegal in California for a vet to refuse a prescription. I know this, because I called the CA Veterinary Medical Board after my call to Whipple, and they pointed me to the Code of Regulations, section 2032.2C, which is available online. When I called back threatening to file a complaint, John, the tech who answered this time, checked with his vet and 10 minutes later called me back to apologize and say I could pick up the prescription in an hour. He said the reasoning was that some pharmacies sell bad drugs that can be harmful to pets.I don't doubt there have been scams and bad actors, but to deny customers a prescription and more importantly, prevent an animal from getting the medicine it needs is, as I stated earlier, illegal. They can strongly recommend that you use their approved pharmacy, but they cannot deny you a prescription, and that is exactly what they tried to do when I first called. Also to add insult to injury, despite the vet having a perfectly capable telephone and fax, they were not willing to fax or telephone in the prescription to my pharmacy; I had to drive over there, pick it up, and mail it to the pharmacy myself. This experience has really changed my view of Whipple Avenue Pet Hospital, and I may look elsewhere for veterinary care in the future.
