I have multiple pets and am often overhwlemed by the costs of veterinary care.  I am also a really overprotective mommy to my furbabies but Dr. Shoja and his staff are like taking them to family.  They are kind people who love on my pets and I feel at ease leaving them in their hands.  Dr. Shoja is also easy to work with regarding the cost of procedures.  I couldn't be happier to have found them! I am on a SSI and have theaphy animals and one got very sick and they got me in and got her taken care of and have been treating my other animals as well  I recommend them highly the staff is very caring and if you are like me my animals are my fur babies and I want to give them the same love and caring that they give me and there is no other place I would take baby girl,Wilbur, pita and aws to because they give them the love and care that I give them. I took our baby Rex for a Rabies shot and other vaccinations. I also wanted him to be checked for heartworm. The staff was so good Rex was overly excited and instead of forcing or hurting my baby they said bring him back for the heartworm check. I liked that. Thank you Read Less

Not worth the visit. It costed me $27 (would've been $47 if it weren't for the refer to a friend discount) to have the doctor tell me the cost of having my dog x-rayed, blood drawn, and anesthetized. I was already aware of the pricing, since I asked one of the staff members. The talk with the doctor lasted about 5 min. He wasn't able to listen to my dog's heart rate or take his temperature because my dog felt threatened. Even if my dog did feel scared, they should've tried harder. They could've asked me to have my dog lie down on his back, so they can listen to his heart beat or something.Overall, I felt that their effort was not there. It was very hard to take my dog to another vet and try to build trust again after having to give my dog CPR to save her life after the previous vet overdosed my dog on morphine. I shared my concerns via email before my visit at Southgate Pet Hospital. They took my concerns very seriously as I had to take Maddy in because I thought she had a bad hip. Turns  out she has a torn ligament in her knee. Going to southgate pet hospital is in a sense going back in time to the old school vets. Who in there own way have the hands on approach that you see with some of the vets on the TV programs. If you expect to have expensive leather couches/chairs  cable TV cookies and coffee at Southgate then my suggestion is take your dog somewhere else like to a 5 star resort because it just going overboard when it's the vets office. And when I mean the hands on approach a lot of these new vets and hospitals treat your dog out of sight and bring you back a stressed out dog. It's not that way at Southgate if your bringing your dog in for a exam or in and out treatment then your going to be right there taking part in it and learning about your dogs medical condition needs from a very experienced vet.  You will probably even take part in restraining/comforting  your dog during shots exams and so on. And as a pet owner i prefer it this way rather then someone that doesnt know my dog trying to restrain and comfort her.  And after dealing with these Corporate  Veterinarians where their only concern is keeping the share holders and happy and wealthy I prefer the more owners hands on approach that I got at Southgate. Southgate pet hospital is privately owned doesn't price gouge you like my previous vet did. In fact since my dog needed to be sedated and have 2 x-rays and a day in the hospital came to $695.00. They even waved the Office visit fee and the day hospitalization fee saving me over $100 bucks Plain and simple if all you care about is getting quality medical care for your Animal at a fair price without giving needless test/medications  then go to Southgate. If you like being separated from your pet then hit with a $1200 estimate and a bunch of needless test and even medications and given back a stressed out dog then please visit your closest VCA Corporate Veterinarian like Muller or the others around town. It's perfect for those people that need white glove atmosphere cookies coffee and big screen TV and leather furniture to sit in while they are doing who knows what to your dog out of sight. Southgate is a lot like Dr. Pols in the sense that the quality is in the animal care at fair prices and not in the buildings and human comforts. Dr Pol works out of a old   Mobile home, while it looks like  Dr Shoja Sangani works out of what looks like use to be a red barn and horse stable that's been converted into a building/vegetarians office.. My only gripe and it is minor is they need to  get rid of the tall  bar stool type chairs and replace them with cheap used waiting room chairs because if I had brought my elderly mom with me she wouldn't have been able to sit. They are tall stools chairs. On a good note though I didnt have to sit in them long because they were ON TIME at keeping the appointment and didnt over book like those corporate vets do making you wait well past your appt time. I will certainly be back for future medical needs that Maddy may need including surgery once I get her weight down. Thank You Southgate Read Less

I have been taking my therapy pet to the vet for 5 years without a diagnosis. After one visit with Dr. Sangani she has a treatment plan & was doing good. My pet acted different with this facility & staff. She did not hide. She was normal, gained weight & no longer throwing up. I took my dog in with no appointment. With that said, I was seen in a reasonable time. .. My dog had a hematoma in the ear and needed surgery immediately. ... I have about 3 vets right around where I live, but I can't imagine going anywhere else.  I used to go to a box store vet and paid for Insurance, but I still paid more there and had what I believe were unnecessary procedures.  The vets at Southgate are loving, thoughtful, reasonable, honest, and caring. Very, very disappointed with "DVM: Shoja Sangani". We have taken our pet in serval times to get nail trims and for other check ups. But the last visit was HORRIBLE. Please, if you love your pet do not take him here. We took our dog in because he would not walk. Long story short: we were told that there was a 90% chance he was going to be paralyzed and that he had already lost all senses on the left rear leg. What makes it even worse- is that more than once he told our family to put him down and that he "had the shot ready to put him down". And to top it off he GAVE HIM THE WRONG MEDICINE. We took him to a different vet (VCA Sacramento vet referral) and they told us the complete opposite. They gave us a huge relief when they told us he was NOT paralyzed and he had 75% chance of walking even without having surgery. These words are directed to the doctor: I am NEVER going back to receive false/misguided advice. We take in our pets for hope of them living and finding a cure not to put them down. Dr. Sanjani is always making improvements to the physical space as well. I take my dog to daycare when I know I'm going to be busy, and board my dog here when I'm away. First off, everyone was really nice especially the receptionists. However, I paid over a thousand dollars for the vet to tell me my baby needs to be neutered. He just had an enlarged prostate. The vet barely listened to his heart and looked at the way he walked and said my chihuahua needed X-rays, complete blood works and pain meds. He did not do a thorough physical exam. my baby was in pain. I feel like I was preyed on because of my emotional state. I highly recommend you go else where. Later my brother told me he paid only $300 for surgery and X-rays for his dog including anesthesia when his dog was sick. The vet quote me for $600 ($400 for anesthesia and $199 for neutering) to have my chihuahua neutered when my brother got his dachshund neutered for only $25. I have 4 dogs and I will never take them back to this place.Update: I got my chihuahua neutered ($55 + $10 for cone) and microchipped ($25) at the SPCA. Read Less

Really wanted to like this place, but it's just not going to work out for us. The staff and doctor were wonderful -- friendly and seemed knowledgeable -- but the open building plan was just too stressful for us and our pups. The rooms are not private and you (and more importantly, your dog or cat) can see every dog coming in an out of the boarding facility and the pets in the other exam rooms. During our short visit, maybe 4-5 dogs walked through the hallway. My dogs are normally pretty calm and easy to deal with at the vet, but they are also young and rambunctious, and in this setting they were whining constantly and had to be restrained at all times to keep from bouncing across the room. If your pet is excitable or nervous at all, I don't think this place will work for you. Also, they asked my partner to lift out 60 lb dog onto the exam table. That was fine for him, but I have back issues and couldn't have done it if it was just me (and it usually is just me at the vet). Also, I just really prefer that vets examine large dogs on the floor if possible. The high table really adds to the stress level for them, in my experience. I know lots of people have good experience here, and I wish I was one of them, but we'll have to go elsewhere due to the building set-up. Read Less

Ok so I have an 8 month lab mix and she has been having some problems eating for the past few days, I've been pretty worried so I thought I would take her in. I called another local vet this morning and they could not fit me in today or anytime soon. So then I called Southgate, the girl that answered the phone was so polite and made me feel so invited, she also got me an appointment ASAP. I was seen very promptly when I got there and the whole team was very nice! My vet was Lisa chapman, she is probably one of the sweetest women Ive met and I feel very lucky that she seen Harley today. I am a college student so unfortunately I can't afford a lot , she laid out all options and didn't make me feel bad for denying any of them and she gave me a really good price to give Harley some treatments! I have only used this Southgate for pet boarding but I am very happy with it. The staff is very friendly and the kennels are very large. They also have a very large area for the dogs to play in (when I toured it I think they said it was 5 acres). I have taken my dog here at least three times, and the longest time was for three weeks. When I bring him here to stay he gets very excited and happy as soon as we pull up, so I know they take excellent care of him. If you are in need of a boarding service I would definitely go here. I have to say what a pleasant surprise to find such a wonderful facility in Sacramento !! First off the front desk girls are so friendly and accommodating . We took a tour of the facility and what a beautiful property the back looks like paradise for animals. The exam rooms were all very clean and organized. Came to check out boarding facility and was very pleased to see how spacious and clean. Love the back of facility lots of green grass and plenty of room for the dogs to run around . Pretty good place. We had 2 chihuahuas a couple years ago and took them there for shots, went several times. Always good service, never had a problem with them. Now we adopted a puppy and take him there now. Still no problems. Good place, good people.Read Less

My boyfriend and I have two dogs. One is a great dane mix with pit-bull and the other is a rat terrier and border collie. We have used this vet for about two years since they were puppies and I simply love them. We haven't used the boarding option yet when we do I will update my review. Read Less

Dr Sangani has cared for my animals since the beginning. When Lisa came there she cared for my pets, also, which included dogs, rabbits and many cats. id give this place 100 stars if i could!!! Dr. Shoja was so nice to me and my uncle and the staff were very accommodating! We walked in without an appointment because our cat had an open wound on her paw. her paw was swollen and she was limping everywhere she walked. right when we got there, the staff checked us in and said that wed have to wait for a bit since there were appointments booked ahead of us. and that was fine and understandable. right when we sat down, 5 minutes later, dr.shoja approached us and asked to see our cat. boy was that a fast service! we didnt have to wait long.  we went into the room where he evaluated her and gave us different options of caring for our cat. i loved that he listed the right necessary options without having to ass unnecessary stuff to make a larger bill charge at the end. He laid out all the steps we needed to take clear and simple. you can tell he knew his stuff and that he was compassionate and loved animals/pets!! After reading all the 5 star reviews, I was excited to take my dog to Southgate. After I purchased my new home, she had problems with fleas and her skin. My appointment was with the young, female vet, however she was overrun by the owner. He talked fast and seemed disinterested. It bothers me when vets don't interact with my dog. They used scotch tape to test her skin for bacteria, said there was bacteria, and sent us home with a topical flea med and anitbiotic. I treated the entire house, the backyard and my pup. 3 weeks later, she still had the marks on her skin and the hair loss. I returned to the vet and the owner said he was a "general practice" vet and referred me to a dermatologist. They didn't even look at her. I called the dermatologist. It's $125 just to have a consult and he was on vacation for the next month.I went back to her regular vet out in Citrus Heights. They gave her stronger flea medicine and got her on antihistamines. Turns out she's just got allergies like her mom. Guess what, they are a "general practice" vet too. They just actually tried. Southgate was lazy and disinterested, not to mention hot and dirty. The owner acted like he was saving me money by referring me to the ridiculously expensive dermatologist my dog didn't need. I bet he gets a referral bonus :)The staff here is super sweet. I cannot imagine a better first visit. Both vets welcomed us and our dog immediately as we walked into the hospital. We had excellent service. Wonderful clean facility. They are people persons and pet persons. Large expansive complex. I had no idea how large it is. I am really impressed by both Drs. Sangani and Chapman and the rest of the staff. Dr. Chapman thoroughly examined our seven week old puppy and Dr. Sangani gave us a tour of the compound and showcased free roaming, well-behaved pets. Love Lisa! Great easy to talk to Vet. We have an abuse case rescue and he gets very nervous when being lifted. She did not make me muzzle him when they did a blood test which caused him a lot less stress. We have seen Lisa every time we come, actually had an emergency visit to another hospital and she called me to follow up. We really appreciate her as it has been difficult to find a wonderful vet. The personal care that my new Maltese puppy received for her visit to a veterinarian was appalling. Without even putting a hand on her, the doctor declared that she needed to be seen by another veterinarian about her tear stains. The doctor has rude and insulting in making remarks about my dog’s breed. I felt discriminated against by a Vet. I will never recommend Southgate Veterinary hospital to anyone with 2 or 4 legs. My dog was rushed to this vet hospital suffering from heatstroke. Dr. Sangani went above and beyond the call of duty to save her life. The first night she was there, he stayed until 9 p.m., until she stabilized. The next day we took her home, but during that night, her condition deteriorated rapidly. I called the office and Dr. Sangani answered and said to bring her right away, which we did. We (my husband and I) thought that would be the end, but Dr. Sangani wanted to try more. He told us to return at 4 p.m. Unfortunately, he called and 10:15 a.m. and told us to come over, and we knew there was no more that could be done for her. She was an exceptional animal -- an American bullterrier/boxer mix who was a service dog, therapy dog, and chaplaincy dog. During her short three years, she touch hundreds of people in different ways. In my opinion, Dr. Sangani and his staff were kind, compassionate, and did more than the average vet would do to save this special animal. He was very specific in explaining Agape's situation when we arrived, making it clear that she would not be able to walk if she were to survive. We trusted our beloved pet to him, and he took exceptional care of her. Our thanks go out him and his staff for all the help they provided for both Agape' and us.When we paid the bill, we excepted it to be far more than it was.
