First off let me start off by stating that I am a nurse. I may not be a doctor or vet, but I do have medical experience, knowledge, and education. That being said, 2 of my dogs had a skin infection. I took them to the humane society and was given cephalexin (standard antibiotic). This cleared up the skin infection in both dogs, however in one dog it came back. So I took the dog that the infection came back to, to the loma linda animal hospital and explained the situation. The vet tried to pull one over on me and tell me my dog might have cancer and wanted to run all sorts of expensive tests. I explained that it was a nurse and it was a skin infection, both dogs had it, cephalexin was given, and it resolved the issue, thus proving it was a skin infection and not cancer, as the antibiotics were effective in killing the bacteria in the skin. and if it worked for 1 dog, it should work for both. (the dog it came back on is a bit larger and probably needed a higher or longer dose). So we got into a debate over the cancer vs skin infection, he pretty much got caught trying to pull one over on me. I left, took my dog to Dr Butchko's, my dog was prescribed ciprofloxacin and the infection cleared up. To make a long story short, the bacteria had built up a resistance to the cephalexin which is common as it is a very standard abx. So a alternative abx was needed, cipro. the humane society tried to tell me my dog had ringworm....smhthe only place i go is either dr butchkos for standard stuff, or back bay veterinarian in OC for major stuff. have gotten 3 surgeries there and they seem to be the only places that are a vet first and a business second.
