We took our two adult cats here when we were planning our out of state move, and it was a fantastic experience. We had a lot to cover in one appointment: updating their shots, getting general checkups, and then talking through the pros and cons of various options for for travel, including possible medication to keep them calm. Our biggest concern when we see a new vet is our older cat, who hates new experiences of all kinds - especially when they involve leaving the house. But the staff had no trouble at all keeping her calm during the examination, and they didn't even need to scruff her during the vaccinations. To cover all the topics, they were brisk but incredibly thorough, and by the end of the visit, we'd covered all the bases, and when we left, we had a plan and the medication we needed to execute it. The price was probably the most surprising part. Given the two checkups, the vaccinations, and the prescriptions, I expected to pay considerably more than we did. Read Less

I have been to many vets around the Peninsula. I have seen the staff ignore a customer because they didn't want to pick up 50#s of dog food from the back storage. The customer waited an hour! This type of poor customer service would NEVER happen at San Bruno Pet Hospital. They are a well-oiled machine thanks to the awesome staff that greet you immediately when you walk in the door. They don't make you wait long at all - maybe 5 minutes at the most. I walked in with emergency situations and they took my pet immediately. They coddle my pets like they are their own. The staff have shed tears when my pets died. I believe that it is a prerequisite to love animals if you work there. They are all concerned when animals get injured. I can hear them talk about emergencies where animals were injured in fires, falls and accidents. The veterinarians, Dr. Chiu, Dr. Maeda, Dr. Salinger, Dr. Gonzalez, all of them are the best too. They know when to get a specialist for a second opinion. They try to give estimates to the best of their ability. The standard of care is superlative. If I were somebody's pet, I would come with papers that say, TAKE ME TO SAN BRUNO PET HOSPITAL for everything I need including flea meds and food.Speaking of pet food, they don't order excessive stock that gets old. They are careful to restock fresh food routinely.SBPH cares for dogs, cats, rabbits, snakes, hamsters, chinchillas, iguanas, and bearded dragons. I have rescued 7 felines in my lifetime. They have all been loved and cared for by these amazing people: Β Janice, Pearl, Debbie, Kathleen, Jennifer, Eddie, Paula, etc. When they board animals, they take them for walks and let them play. They don't ignore pets that need attention. My pets don't act distressed when I pick them up. I can tell that they got exercise and were well fed. Cats lose weight when they are upset. Β My cats 'gain' weight when they board at SBPH. That is the litmus test for me. My cats have lost weight at other boarding facilities. The TLC that pets need is dished out freely at SBPH. Take your pet there, and you will know what I am talking about. If you live in another town, you may consider bringing your pet where they will get their appointment as scheduled. Β You won't have to wait an hour for food, medicine or YOUR APPOINTMENT. Β Time is money. The staff & vets know that. This place is Awesome! Read Less

I recently rescued a 5 year old Boxer. Being new to the area, I checked the reviews of all the Veterinarians in SSF, San Bruno and Millbrae. I decided to give San Bruno Pet Hospital a try since most of their reviews were very favorable. I was not disappointed. The front office staff were very friendly and accommodating. They answered every question I had. The veterinarian did not rush me and took the time to review all of my Boxer's medical paperwork that came with him at the time of adoption. She answered every question, was very knowledgeable and helpful in directing me to follow up care for any issues that may arise. She gave my Boxer a very thorough exam and he seemed comfortable with her. I walked out of San Bruno Pet Hospital with a feeling that I had made the right choice for my Boxer and that we would have a reliable, knowledgeable veterinarian for many years to come. The front office staff even calls, texts and emails me when there is an upcoming appointment or they want to follow up on my visit and my Boxer's care. I cannot say enough good thing about this hospital. Granted, my only experience was only one incident with my dog, they were still great. So my dog got some really deep cuts on his arm that were open wounds (not bleeding) but close to his ligaments and possibly his arteries. My usual vet said they wouldn't be bale to see him for 3 days! So I called SBPH and they were able to see Clancy in an hour. Dr. Eric was very honest and upfront with me stating the wounds weren't anything too serious and would probably heal on their own (instead of trying to up-sell me on stitches, etc.) A week later I even got a call from Dr. Eric to check in on Clancy. How thoughtful! Clancy is doing better now and is almost back to his normal self. Read Less

I moved to Daly City, and eventually got tired of driving an hour and a half to Oakland for my vet. I looked up vets in the area that saw both dogs and rabbits, and I settled on San Bruno Pet Hospital. While I do think they're somewhat pricey, they are definitely very through. I've had a great experience with the staff and Dr. Gonzales. Also, both my pets are a little older, and have acquired some conditions.I love that the staff and doctors believe strongly in positive reinforcement. They're nice about working with my dog on the ground, and they play and give her treats to get her to feel comfortable to be examined. You can tell they love animals and are super knowledgable. I always learn something new about how my dog's biology and behavior works, and I have a degree in animal biology and behavior. There had been a question whether or not my dog had a heart murmur. One of my previous vets said she did, the other said she didn't. This went on for a year of being told yes and no. Dr. Gonzales took a listen, and determined she did indeed have a heart murmur. I felt very good with her explanation of what could be going on, and what tests I should do to make sure my dog got the best care possible. I got a chest x-rays, ECG, and echocardiogram. They were able to properly diagnose my dog, so I knew exactly what to expect and when she should go on medication. They very carefully went over her condition and things to look out for. They also made sure that she was well enough to undergo anesthesia for a teeth cleaning, which my dog came out of with very white and clean teeth! My rabbit has also gone in and had an abcessed molar tooth. It's apparently a genetic thing. He got his molars trimmed, and again, Dr. Gozales did an excellent job. She took a ton of pictures, and showed them to me to explain what was happening. He came out of the procedure quickly and with a full appetite. They are definitely very through, so if you're someone who doesn't really believe in practicing veterinary care like you would on your own human child, you probably shouldn't go here. I have definitely had pets misdiagnosed from less through doctors, because of them trying to save me money. Something that they were trying to be nice about, but ended up costing me a lot more since what was an acute, curable problem became chronic and incurable. In general, you can work with San Bruno Pet Hospital to start small and go big, but I do believe they are doing all the tests just the way they would on a family member. So if that's your thing, definitely go for them. Read Less

On behalf of our entire family, we would like to thank Dr. Salinger and her team for caring about our dog, Shinpei. Just like any other pet owner, we always cared for his well being and Dr. Salinger always gave us options which focused on what's best for him, not for business. If you truly care about what's best for your canine, and even have a slight doubt about what to do, go to San Bruno Pet Hospital! We can not thank the team enough. He lived happily, LOT longer than expected, gave us ton of love, healthier, and most importantly, least pain possible. Are they expensive? I don't think so as you can't put a price tag on your family member's health. They have always been fair and upfront to us, even to my mother who's not perfect with her English. Expensive and not forthcoming with costs. **BE WARNED**. This was our vet until recently; though I had been considering a change for a while. Final straw came when we took our dog in for day boarding and received a bill for ~$110.Reasoning was that they gave the dog an "exam" (*without authorization*) and slapped on an extra $60.Whether or not the exam was policy (which they explained after the fact), it was totally redundant. We had spend more than $1000 in the previous 2 weeks having the dog examined already (which found, alas, a tumor). What more could be examined? What would this extra exam tell us?Besides which, San Bruno pet hospital is approximately 4X more expensive than other places (for example, SAGE Centers for Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Care). They quoted $800-$1200 for an ultrasound for our dog, versus the $200 it actually cost at SAGE. Sorry to say, but I recommend you go elsewhere if you don't want to be ripped off and then be lectured about "policy". Read Less

I recently took my cat Boxer here yesterday after observing some strange behavior. He wasn't acting himself. Obviously something was up if a normally super sweet and outgoing social butterfly is acting like a reclusive grump hiding in corners and under beds instead of being a cuddle monster. I called up the vet, was greeted by eddy. He was super nice and attentive and was happy to answer any questions. He scheduled me immediately after noticing my concern and it being a emergency, he took down some basic info and bam I was set.Upon arrival my faith diminished slightly because I noticed the power was shut off. But again I was greeted by a extremely positive staff and was told that Boxers doc would be with us shortly and told us despite the lack of power they were sure they could find some solution to our problem. Dr. Gonzalez came out and was super easy to talk to and understanding. I told her boxer (who's sick and gets car sick easily) HD a bit of an accident in the car and she immediately cleaned him off and petted him. Her mellow demeanor and calm and lovable approach made my cat lounged around like he owned the place. She proceeded with her check up and already could tell he was de hydrated and in a foul mood he to being sick. She did all the normal things like checked his weight and temp and told us she thinks he may have laryngitis or some type of problem with his throat. They drew blood and a Β urine sample and gave him some fluids and prescribed us antibiotics. Thanks to Dr. Gonzalez and her professional staff Boxer who's a big part of my family is feeling better. I am so disappointed with San Bruno Pet Hospital. We have had a 1 year relationship with them and I have recommended them multiple times. They have seemed to be compassionate and professional throughout. But..... When I took my dog in for his annual shots this week, they said he needed some tooth extractions. We talked about it, they did an exam and they quoted me a "low end quote" of $800, with a "high end" of $1000. It is a lot of money, but we didn't want him in pain, so we took the plunge and booked him in. On the day of surgery, I was traveling and they called my wife during surgery to say that Teddy was on the table and things were worse than they expected and that it would now be around $1600ish. My wife of course was stuck as you can't back out at that stage and said to go ahead. I went in this morning to face an actual bill of $1724 - 70% over their highest price. I talked to them and said "if you quote low end and high end, then how can you be 70% above high end" to be told they had not done "a great job" on the estimate but they found the teeth a lot worse. So I get the situation, but here are my issues: 1. High end means high end - if things are worse, then you gave a bad diagnosis and a bad estimate. Your fault - you suck up the price difference. 2. I am not a vet, so I am relying on your expertise and made a decision based on it. Don't low ball me and then charge me more - its unprofessional and bad service 3. Judging by other reviews on Yelp, this is not the first time this has happened, so fix the issue of bad estimates if it is an honest mistake and if not, then be prepared for some pretty bad reviews 4. When I complained this morning, I had a one-on-one with the vet. She heard me out, agreed it was not ok, but did not budge even one cent. It was clear that "the best interest of the pet and/or customer" was not front of mind. 5. I told her that I was upset and that I would not be going back in the future and there was STILL no movement on either price or understanding. It seemed she wanted me out (After I paid my bill) To be clear - I am not unhappy with the care. My dog seems fine (although 10 teeth out is not making him exactly happy)- but this bait and switch pricing is more like a bad used car sales person than someone who has concern for their patients or their families.Read Less

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET TO THIS HOSPITAL. This place not only rips you off, but it also tortures your pet with all kinds of unnecessary testing. I took my chihuahua to White Ivie because he'd been having diarrhea and gas for the past 3 days and seemed to be very uncomfortable. He was seen by Dr. Morfin, whom misdiagnosed him with pancreatitis. I was told that he needed to be hospitalized. He ordered an IV to give him fluids; even though, I'd let Dr.Morfin know that my dog wasn't dehydrated, that he was still drinking water. He also ordered an assortment of tests -- complete blood work, a pancreatitis test, x-rays, a physical exam. And, even before Dr. Morfin had the test results, they had injected my dog with an antibiotic, a pain killer, and an anti-acid -- all pretty strong medications from what I read on the internet. When I called Dr. Morfin to find out the results of the tests, I didn't speak with him until the fifth time I called. He said that all my dog had was an irritated stomach and some gas. But, that he still wanted to keep him overnight to have him re-evaluated the next day. I declined and went to go pick him up. I questioned Dr. Morfin on why they'd performed so many tests and given him so much medication. He became angry and told me that since I did not trust him that I should find another veterinarian. I was charged $886. But, that's not the worst part. MY DOG HAS NOT BEEN THE SAME SINCE. The first 48 hours were the worst. He was constantly whimpering, he couldn't walk, he wouldn't eat, he wouldn't drink, he wouldn't pee, he wouldn't poo, he wouldn't move at all. Whenever I pick him up, he?d cry out in pain. He wouldn't even acknowledge me whenever I called him -- he seemed to be in a catatonic state. His eyes were extremely dilated and; at times, seemed to be having hallucinations. Alarmed at the state of my dog, I called White Ivie the very next day and made an appointment with Dr. Salinger (one of the owners). I told the receptionist to tell Dr. Salinger that I was not going to pay for the visit because whatever they had done or given him the day before had made him extremely ill. However, thirty minutes before my appointment, they called me to let me know that they had cancelled my appointment. Their explanation for the cancellation was that ""I did not trust them and should seek veterinary help somewhere else"". Today is the third day and he's still not well. He still has diarrhea, his urine is almost orange, he can barely move, he's hardly eating or drinking, and he stills cries out in pain whenever I pick him up. Due to the outrageously high fees that I was charged at White Ivie and because I'm on disability, I can't afford to take my doctor to another vet. Read Less

But, he still wanted to keep him overnight to have him re-evaluated the next day. We declined and went to go pick him up. I questioned the doctor on why they'd performed so many tests and given him so much medication. I was told that since I did not trust him, I should find another veterinarian. I was charged $886.00. But, that's not the worst part. MY DOG HAS NOT BEEN THE SAME SINCE. The first 48 hours were the worst. He was constantly whimpering, he couldn't walk, he wouldn't eat, he wouldn't drink, he wouldn't go pee, he wouldn't go poo, he wouldn't move at all. He wouldn't even acknowledge me whenever I called him -- he seemed to be in a catatonic state. His eyes were extremely dilated and, at times, seemed to be having hallucinations. Alarmed at the state my dog was in, I called Ivie the very next day. I call the hospital and made an appointment with Dr. Salinger. I told them that I was not going to pay for the appointment because whatever they had done or given him the day before had made him extremely ill. However, thirty minutes before my appointment, I received a phone call from them cancelling my appointment. Their explanation for the cancellation was that ""I did not trust them"". Today is the third day and he's still not well. He still has diarrhea, his pee is almost orange, he can barely move, he's hardly eating or drinking, and he stills cries out in pain whenever I try to pick him up. Because of the outrageous amount that I was charged at Ivie and; due to the fact, that I'm on disability, I can't afford to take my dog to another vet. Read Less

We were worried about bringing Bear, our dog, to the vet, especially a new vet. Bear can be unpredictable and jump at someone without warning. We feared the worst and thought for sure Bear would have to be sedated before the vet could examine him. But, Dr. Salinger was so wonderful with Bear that she was able to poke Bear with a needle to get a fluid sample from a cyst underneath his tail. Bear was completely cooperative. We found the instructions and communications invaluable and so helpful. I highly recommend Dr.Salinger, and find her care and interest warm and calming. Joan Read Less

We recently adopted two miniature schnauzers. The Pet Store referred us to the veterinarian who examines their new puppies. We took Patrick and Sean to this veterinarian for their routine new-puppy visits and were satisfied with the care (although I admit we really didn't have any previous experience to use for comparison). Yesterday, Patrick (now 8 mos.) had been licking and ""favoring"" his right paw. Our veterinarian was unavailable, so we called White Ivie Pet Hospital (because is very near to our home). We explained our emergency and they gave us an appointment within an hour. From arrival to departure, both my partner and I were overwhelmingly impressed with EVERY aspect of this experience. The facility is immaculate and ""up to date"", the office staff was friendly and helpful to both us and ?our boys? - which was only the beginning of this marvelous experience. We were seen by Dr. Elaine Salinger VMD - one of the most intelligent, well-spoken, compassionate and thorough healthcare providers I have ever met. Not only did she address the reason we were there, but she also spent a great deal of time educating us about our pups and the overall approach to properly loving and caring for them. I was extremely impressed by her in-depth knowledge and her emphasis on the importance of ""disease prevention"" (I am a practicing Physician Assistant, and as such I know the importance of Patient Education and Preventative Medicine). I recall thinking: ""what a wonderful blend of knowledge, compassion, sincerity, education, and candor"". And, we have it on good authority that the other attending Veterinarians who work with Dr. Salinger share her philosophy, competence, compassion, and focus on preventative medicine. We?re so glad that we found the White Ivie Pet Hospital. It has given us an immeasurable sense of confidence and security, and we HIGHLY recommend this wonderful practice to everyone who wants optimal healthcare for their pets.

Read Less

My daughter had to put her cat to sleep a couple of months ago. Dr. Elane Salinger was very patient and tried to help my daughter go through this difficult time. We appreciated her help very much.
