They are very thorough here and definetly have your pets best interest in mind. They sometimes explain details too much or call and check in too often. I wish my personal doctor was as concerned for me as they are for even the smallest of pet concerns. With that said sometimes I just want to try a treatment and see if it works without another check up appointment or consultation. The bill can add up quickly. Also expect to wait 30 minutes to pay your bill or get your medication instructions. They can be very slow and often need to check each others work or with the doctor. Read Less

Liked them better before they changed the location, but call me biased -- I used to live down the street and now it's farther away than the other vet we have records at. Pros: Dr. Katie Liu has been great the last couple of years with our dog and happy to answer my many questions -- she's the reason I keep records here still since it's no longer the vet closest to my house. New location has large waiting areas and separate between cats and dogs. New facility since the remodel / move, spacious rooms and facility. Visits have been quick and efficient. Visits / services have been a little cheaper than other vets in the area. (However, vaccines are not necessarily cheaper than Pet Food Express's clinics during promos or deals.). Willing to write paper scripts for online pharmacies and hasn't upsold meds to me in my experience.  Cons: Careful with map location of this address, although it appears to have been corrected since my experience with it back when they first moved. If you punch in this address, you used to get 255 Old County Rd. in Belmont / San Mateo, getting close to HIllsdale. It would dump you somewhere in the midst of a bunch of apartment complexes and auto repair shops. When I called asking what was going on with the location, they told me there were multiple locations on Old County with the same number and that this was the one near Harbor Blvd. Front desk staff is kind of cranky -- In response to the aforementioned situation with wrong location, I was asked when I'd get there and I told them maybe 10-15 minutes due to the traffic at the time of the appt (yes, say hello to the new Bay Area rush hour!). I was then told I would need to cancel / reschedule the apt since that would be over their 15 minute late policy. Um, not my fault that your new office shares an address with a bunch of other locations on Old County up and down the peninsula. I made it in the nick of time but driving fast pregnant and with two freaked out dogs didn't help me like them more. Big dip in the driveway getting into their lot -- pave that shit, please! Thanks for also taking the underside of my bumper off, in my hurry to get into my appt. After I hauled ass to make it to this appointment, checking out with the front desk was the complete opposite, SLOW!!  Gonna assume these were just growing pains when they first moved to the new location. Amazing experience with this vet. As we had to put down our cat, they mad the experience as tolerable as possible. They met us at the door and took us in a side door so that we didn't have to go in through the main door. The vet came in to see us right away and she talked through the process with us and let us say goodbye. They asked us if we wanted to pay before the process so that we didn't have to pay after when we were sad and dealing with the grief. They were extremely caring and gentle and didn't rush us in anyway what so ever. Overall they made what should be a terrible experience slightly more bearable. Read Less

When my Pomeranian's disc slipped in his back, watching him being still with his eyes closed in such high pain was so very difficult.  Choosing Sequoia Vet Hospital on yelp was a stellar move. Dr. Nancy Whyte handled my 10 lb, 14 yr old, Rusty with such TLC as she checked his reflexes & watched him (not) walk.  I'm so grateful for her training & expertise as well as her welcoming staff. Dr. Jorgensen has continued to show genuine care and good follow up for our dog Dinah.  I really appreciate her determination to keep with our case.  It is stressful to have an sick family member but she has been really empathetic. We have been going to Sequioa Vet Hospital for 9 years now and they have always treated us like family. I never knew how fair there pricing was until we had to go elsewhere because of my job.The other places tried to gouge me. I am so glad to have time to bring our Dog back here. If I had the choice, I would have given zero stars to this place.I am so upset with Sequoia Veterinary. The doctors were too pushy, unfriendly, lack of experience, lack of equipment. All they want is MONEY.We took our kitten for the health check cause he jumped off and broke his leg. It's something like you break your ankle while playing basketball, and we just wanted to make sure it won't be a big problem for a cat since we trusted in doctor's experience. We paid 100 dollars for NOTHING. The doctor did a one minute check and said she cannot give any result without X-ray, which is another 200 dollars. After we refused - cause we didn't buy insurance yet, and we really just wanted to get some advice from the "experienced" doctors, but she seems to have no experience at all - she didn't use any equipment for the check and she even pointed the WRONG part where our cat felt uncomfortable - the doctor became very impatient and unfriendly, and almost, angry. She even wrote very bad words on the report as revenge because we didn't do the X-ray. I was so surprised that as a doctor, what she thought was not giving helpful advice or tips, but rather trying so hard on getting service done and taking money. it was RIDICULOUS.After one day, our kitten could walk normally again. I feel so lucky that we didn't do X-ray and any further service with Sequoia. And we'll never go back anymore. Read Less

I have yet to visit them in their new location, but we loved them at their old location.  Very friendly staff, easy to call, talk to someone and make appointments.  They aren't open on weekends, but they are open pretty late on weekdays.  We had gone there maybe a total of 6 or so times since we got our pup.. they're always attentive and nice and welcoming and make your pup feel special.  We've mostly seen Dr. Terry and she's awesome.  She's gentle and knowledgeable, but the best part is she listens and let us ask a lot of questions.  A couple nice touches from them:  they called our day care to tell them our dog was up to date on shots and also send out postcards w/ your pet's cute face on it to remind you of yearly appointments. We liked the set up of their office at their old location.. exactly how I'd imagine a vet to be... will be interested to see what their new location is like. Read Less

The vet who usually sees my furbabies is Dr. Barb Kollin in Palo Alto, but when we need more advanced care, she sends me to Sequoia Veterinary Hospital. They are really wonderful and have helped my silly labrador (who needed dental work) and my 15 1/2 year old kitty (who is having kidney issues) a great deal.Read Less

Very friendly vet staff,  quite knowledgeable. Only downside,  front desk was very unorganized. We've only visited about 3 times to welcome the new addition to our family: 4 month old Kitty "Boots"(age at the time) adopted from the SPCA . On all 3 occasions, we waited over 30 mins to be seen and 30 mins after for payment and care plan. I'm not one to complain, but an hour waisted waiting? Not to mention keeping a kitty calm in a box for that long is not an easy task... Overall, our Boots was well taken care of and loves his new home!(: Read Less

We've been bringing our cats and our dogs to Sequoia for over 15 years. This afternoon I just came back with my kitty Mia, she's 19 years old and Dr. Terry and Dr. White are so wonderful and caring . Last week I brought Mia and she was very ill Dr. Terry thought she could having a tumor in her brain or it could've been a abscess tooth she went ahead and she treated her with antibiotics and pain medicine. She said if Mia is not better by Monday you might have to put her down. My heart was broken, two days after antibiotics me a started eating and I gave her no more pain medicine. She went back today for a recheck she's gained a half a pound in seven days and she's eating well . Their staff is excellent they are Also very caring . Read Less

I had high hopes for this Vet practice, but am hugely disappointed. Money seems to be a  major focus here. There was blatant up selling and overcharging for procedures and special foods....and the staff's veneer of professionalism disappears if you ask any questions. In fact, the male vet shows outright disdain for his clients. He claimed I didn't inform them of my dog's food allergies (which I had done twice). His attitude was so snarky I knew there was no way I could trust him.After a series of outrageous charges for tests and infusions, my dog's stomach upset (which has been going on all summer) is still undiagnosed.  And the vet said many more expensive tests would be necessary. (The vet said the next test -- an ultrasound -- would be $500, but then the desk staff said it was actually $800). Meanwhile my dog is still vomiting and is untreated and suffering. Read Less

Let me preface this by saying that I brought my cat Casey to Sequoia Vet for many years and HAD received excellent care.  So my low rating is more towards my latest (and last) experience there.  Casey has had inflamed bowels for several years.  Until lately it was under control with the help from steroids. About a week ago, Casey suddenly started having diarrhea, lost weight and stopped eating. Usually, she takes her meds without issue using Pill Pockets, but she refused to eat those as well.  I called Sequoia immediately, and they gave me SUCH a hard time - first about her meds and then about treatment. Basically, they wanted me to force pills down her throat when I knew she could easily be given a steroid shot instead. Then, after they finally agreed to give her the shot, the tech told me that if she doesn't respond to the shot then there's nothing else they can do. When I asked about upping her steroid dosage as a possibility, they gave me the run around. Having done extensive research on bowel inflammation in cats and speaking with other veterinarians, I decided on a second opinion.  Not only did the new vet tell me about alternate methods of giving Casey her steroids, but also agreed with me that Casey was not at the end of the road yet, that other treatment methods could also be tried (including upping her steroid dose slightly). A week later and Casey has improved greatly - she's eating (both her food and her treats, so she's getting her meds again), she's happy, she's gaining weight, and her stools are back to normal. While I am grateful that they gave her steroid shot, what upset me about this experience was the attitude like they couldn't be bothered to treat her, and the dismissal of my fears and concerns.  Whether this is a temporary fix, and she'll stop responding to her meds again - who knows. All I know is that Casey was NOT ready to go, and until she gets to that point (and all other treatment options have failed), I will continue to fight for her. I'm disappointed that Sequoia Veterinary chose not to - neither of us will be back. Read Less

Sadly we lost our girl Bella in 2010 at the too young age of 17; our boy Guido is still with us, planning to celebrate his 22nd birthday this June, and many beyond that, as long as his happiness and quality of life continue. We have only good things to say about Sequoia Veterinary Hospital and most especially our vet, Dr. Bosse. We have been bringing our puppy Jimmy to Dr. Bosse at Sequoia since his first visit. The staff are always kind, pleasant and helpful; we've been able to take care of many things by phone or email, which is incredibly convenient; and they always make it a great experience for Jimmy. He doesn't mind going to the vet!We felt compelled to write a review largely because of how great Dr. Bosse has been, though. He has consistently taken incredible care of Jimmy. When our puppy ate part of his dog bed and had to spend the night in an emergency hospital, Dr. Bosse followed up with us multiple times to make sure Jimmy was OK. (Jimmy wasn't even staying at Sequoia! We had to bring him elsewhere because it happened late at night.) He's also incredibly helpful and honest. I decided to transfer care for my cat and brought her in with Jimmy for a routine checkup; he noticed that she wasn't due for a visit and looked well. Rather than doing and charging for an unnecessary appointment, he just advised that we bring her back in a few months with Jimmy's next appointment. Overall Dr. Bosse has been a knowledgeable, helpful, kind, and dedicated doctor for Jimmy and us. We would recommend him wholeheartedly to anyone looking for a vet. Read Less

NOTE: This is a review for Dr. Whyte. The talented and lovely Dr. Terry treated my cat, Milky, in 2014. As a first-time cat owner, she gave tips and information that made me be a better mom to Milky. She address my concerns regarding his vaccines and his heart murmur. Best new cat mom experience ever!This time around, I was assigned Dr. Whyte for my new dog, Bali, the friendliest, sweetest dog ever.First, Dr. Whyte was impersonal and transactional. She recommended that I give Bali the  leptospirosis vaccine because I am an avid hiker. It made sense but...she failed to tell me the pros and cons of vaccination and did not warn me about the side effects. A few hours passed by and I noticed Bali wasn't eating, drinking or exploring the office space like he usually does. They gave me the option to leave him at home and come get medications. Did Dr. Whyte come out to quickly to check in while I was paying? No.In the past 24 hours, she has not called me once. I highly doubt I'll return. Read Less

I have seen every vet at this hospital for my pets and rescues, and I trust every one.  And having tested or used many other veterinarians (I am a rescue volunteer with several organizations)  I don't know a single other practice where I can say that.  They provide pet-centered, quality care.  Yes, there are places where the costs are a bit lower, but Sequoia is in the middle of the range, and well under the most expensive.  But for places and vets that provide a very high quality of care, they are extremely reasonable.  Also other vets may charge less for an office visit but push extra unneeded vaccinations or tests-- Sequoia doesn't do that.  I have several of my fur-babies going to Sequoia for advanced care for chronic conditions, and please believe me when I say that among the small number of local vets/ clinics I trust, Sequoia's prices are the lowest. We have gone to this vet since 2004 for our cat and our dogs.  For many years it was the best.  That seems to be no longer the case.  While I read many positive reviews here, our experience since the change over of the majority of the veterinarians is that it feels like they no longer put our pet's best interest first; it is now about insuring being profitable.  From trying to make it hard to order medicines online from anyone but their partnered pharmacy, recommending the premium over the generic even though they are actually the exact same medicine, blood glucose device or type of food, to ordering a test just because a year has past even though there are no health issues today, there just now seems to be too much up-sell for little or worse no advantage.Sequoia has been excellent in emergencies, but those are also times when we say costs mostly don't matter, just make our pet better; so their performance there is no surprise.  I think Sequoia would benefit from finding a way to better balance being profitable while still providing the __appropriate__ level of care that makes sense for the pets.We have older pets whose care is important to us and keeping them comfortable, happy and safe is our number one priority.  We want to feel like that is our vets priority too. That isn't something I feel anymore and it becomes more and more pronounced after each visit.  It makes me sad to end the long relationship we have had with Sequoia, but I have found better, more caring and easier to work with vets at other practices nearby. This review is for the veterinary internal service with Linda Jorgensen - the 'medical director'. SAVE YOUR TIME AND MONEY TO GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! After all these years of practice she still cannot comprehend and /or lacks the ability to pay attention to the details of an ultrasound as a veterinary internist. There was a foreign object (plastic piece) about the size of 1 x 1.5 x 0.2 cm in my dog stomach whose only 5-lbs that Jorgensen determined was water in his stomach should indicate how lacking her skill set is. (I later had a real educated experienced veterinary internist, UNLIKE Jorgensen, re-examine and remove the object from my dog). Add insult to injury, my vet and I waited 2 weeks for her 'detailed' report that consisted less than 70 words (to put that in perspective its a very short one paragraph consist phrases of 'looks good') with no measurements of any sort of the internal organs in question to use as reference for future rechecks. My past experience with other internist - all provided a report within 24 hours - and all the reports consist more than 70 words (usually a page or two not the paragraph provided here) included are all the measurement of the organs such a thickness of the lining etc. To put her skill set into perspective - the vets that have reviewed her work were all not impressed with Jorgensen to the point that I had to spend more money for a real vet internist to re-do the work. Jorgensen's ability is so lacking that I seriously suggest you TAKE YOUR PETS SOMEWHERE ELSE WHERE YOU ONLY NEED TO SHELL OUT THE BIG BUCKS ONCE AND GET IT DIAGNOSED CORRECTLY 1ST TIME AROUND.Read Less

I have been going to Sequoia Veterinary Hospital since 2009. I brought my dog in because I was not happy with another clinic. They quickly determined it was cancer. Surgery and chemo took place and he was eventually cured. Over the next six years I brought my dog in for routine issues and they were professional and skilled in every aspect. I have complete confidence in their trading and ability.When it came time to have my pet put down they were helpful, kind and supportive. The staff that had worked with my dog over the years came in to say good bye.  They made a very sad experience tolerable. I can not say enough about them. I cannot give Sequoia Veterinary Hospital enough stars. I went in on 8/4/2015 with my kitty for a checkup. When I arrived, the lovely tech who checked me in informed me that my appointment was for the previous day. I stated, with confidence, that it was the 4th, and I remember that because it was a very busy day for me. She stepped away, and upon returning informed me that she was going to get me in.The vet was very informative. Nightshade is an easy cat, and I was so happy to learn that she was in good general health and had a bit of a eye issue that a gel would alleviate. I let her know that my budget was firm and the same tech who helped me reviewed the cost of supplements. When it was out of my range, she included the dosage on my bill in case I wanted to get it myself.The total came to about $140. The only thing that was more expensive than my vet in Vista was the office visit price of $64. In Vista it's $45.Once I arrived home, I checked my notes, an lo! I was completely wrong. It was written, plain as yogurt, 8/3/2015. I truly appreciate Sequoia Veterinary Hospital for dealing with my scattered brain and providing excellent service that I highly recommend. Read Less

Called Sequoia last minute for my sis's pup's sudden ear pain.  Luckily they had one spot open.  Took Cooper in and left him there as he required sedation for ear exam. We were told to return one hour later. Within 10 minutes, we were called to return for Cooper as his procedure needed postponement until the following morning due to a drop-in emergency.We were very concerned that Cooper was in a lot of pain and that his condition would worsen overnight. Sequoia went above and beyond to make sure Cooper was not in pain over night and waived the boarding fee post procedure and discounted the procedure fee.  The staff at Sequoia were very caring and handled our disappointment of the postponement with grace.  We really appreciate your professionalism. Saying "goodbye" is so difficult. So it's important to find a place like Sequoia, where they understand how important the little things are. I've  been a client for 15 or 20 years, and they've always been good, but recently I had to make that most difficult decision.  My 17 year old cat was able to pass quietly at home - after I had spent time discussing my options with the vet and staff.I hadn't expected to be heading in again so soon, but somehow I have TWO new kittens. And I'll be scheduling an appointment soon, hopefully the beginning of another long relationship. Read Less

I like the small family feel to the practice and it is close to other places I shop on Mission Street. I have owned multiple cats in the years I have gone to Dr. Horne. He always takes a genuine interest and does thorough and careful exams. I never feel rushed along like I have at other vets. Took my 2nd dog for tooth extraction and my cat for vaccine updates. Everything went wonderful, after the surgery, they even took my dog for a short walk! my dog was having non-stop bloody diarrhea and my original vet was closed that day, so while i was looking for some vet, i found this one and they had first initial free visit. So, i decided to go, girls up front were very nice and friendly. After waiting for like 20 mins which i understand since i called like 10 mins before and very late at night, a tech came and asked qs. Then finally i met the Dr. I was amazed by the Dr. he went through everything so thoroughly and took his time and gave me options. Before doing any treatments, he brought me an estimate so i know how much it'll cost. So, i needed to get my dog treated, so we did some tests and Dr. gave me some meds to go home. Cost came around $100 bucks, including free exam, two lab tests, plus meds which was pretty reasonable. Then, Dr himself came outside and went over the meds with me thoroughly and i was very happy with the service that i received from the Dr. I was called the next day with test results and they asked me how my dog was doing. My dog was back to normal and jumping around in 2 days. I will definetely go back and i would suggest others to go and try this place. Read Less

I have two dogs. Ruca and Penny. Ruca has been seen here for her knee. Which she must have twisted. The treatment plan was to give her the anti- inflammation medicine and keep her off it so it could heal. If that did not work then we would go for the x-rays to see how bad it was. And possible surgery. My point is tho that the vet could have swindled me and fed me a bunch of crap but she did not. She is an honest vet and gives you options on the treatment your animal may need. Same with my Penny. When she was seen and diagnosed. The vet explained in detail what it could be and gave me options. I am very pleased with this place. I feel its a great animal hospital. All the staff are very nice too. From the front desk staff, to the vets assistant to the vet, etc. They r all very kind and calming to you and your pet. In fact Ruca has a check up tomorrow. I love that I found Companion Animal Hospital and now that I have this is my vet for life. Read Less

I have to completely disagree with the negative review on this site. First, a disclaimer -- I am an internist (for humans), so perhaps the treatment my dog received was unusually good because I knew the right questions to ask. I have an old basset hound who has a lot of medical problems. Dr. Bower was extremely thorough and gentle in his exam. He addressed all of her issues, gave recommendations about treatments and offered appropriate referrals. He also took my opinions into consideration. I have had another vet for my two dogs, and Dr. Bower is much more knowledgeable and comprehensive. Overall, I was very pleased with my dogs' care there. Read Less

I have to TOTALLY disagree with Lichi and Chris. I have been bringing my cats there for just about 5 years. When no other vet could figure out what was wrong with my cats, or telling me they are dying, Dr. Bower saved their lives. I completely trust Dr. Bower. He explains everything in detail and answers all questions and never rushes to get you out of the office. As far as I am concerned, Dr. Bower has performed miracles on a couple of my cats, that otherwise would no longer be here with me. They survived and are healthier then ever. If I listened to the other vets, well, they would be in pine boxes on my mantle right now. As far as the staff is concerned, they are very friendly and professional.Perhaps it was your attitudes, Lichi and Chris, when you went in there that caused them to be unfriendly and defensive. I'm a new dog owner and visited Companion based on a friend's referral. My puppy and I had a very good visit. The office area was very clean and organized, and the office staff was friendly. Additionally, I found Dr. Bower to be very knowledgeable, consultative and patient. He allowed me to ask several questions, volunteered some solid recommendations (with rationale) and provided a new puppy informational packet. We were in and out of the office within 45 minutes without any barking, yelping or tears! I think we're in very good hands. Read Less

I happened upon these reviews in an attempt to google Companion's phone number. Dr. Bower and his associates took care of our very sick dog for almost three years- until she died several years ago. Dr. Bower is our hero. What was supposed to be six weeks became 3 years due to his extraordinary skills. Our dog's dire health made us search out a scientist vs a warm and fuzzy. This guy is an extraordinary clinician. Simultaneously I was personally undergoing treatment at UCSF and Stanford hospitals. I often said that I wished my doctors were as thorough, comprehensive and communicative as Dr. Bower. You tend to get detailed explanation filled with medical terms. He'll take the time to explain it all- you need to ask questions and indicate if it's going over your head. Our dog was so sick with an esoteric disease that there was no way to avoid a fairly dense explanation. If you need cutting edge veterinary care then Dr. Bower is your man. Yes, he's not a TV vet in terms of his personality, but he is an amazing doctor. A good friend back east is a vet and ""consulted"" with me through my dog's illness and commented several times that we were lucky in that Dr. Bower was obviously a master clinician. BTW, he IS a very nice guy. I now live over 100 miles away and our other dog is having a serious medical issue, which makes it time for a master clinician, i.e. a long drive to the best, Dr. Bower. I really love this vet office! They are awesome and they are available everyday and latenights which is great for someone like me who has to work.They are very knowledgable and experienced. My dog had a skin infection that didn't get better at another vet. The vet kept giving my dog steroids! Well, it turned out my dog had a fungal infection which was diagnosed by Companion Animal Hospital on the first day! My dog is feeling great and he doesn't have that stinky dog odor any more. Thank God and Companion Animal Hospital for that!They are very convenient and prices are very affordable. They have free examinations for new clients. I highly recommend them to everyone. Read Less

My cat, Bob, had an ugly absess on his side that just would not open up on its' own, so I called up Sequoia hoping to get him in to see a vet the same day (after trying two other vets) and got an appointment for 2 hours later! The nice veterinarian, Juli Murphy, saw him right away, gently whisked him into the back room for treatment and a shot of antibiotic, returned him to us immediately with instructions for caring for Bob's wound, and we went to the desk to pay. I was shocked at how reasonable the cost was. I've been to many other vets in this area (I have 7 cats) and two of them had similiar problems in the last 6 months. I paid 3 or 4 times more at the other vet offices and the cats were much more traumatized and messed with. The staff were pleasant and efficient and the vet, Juli Murphy, was very caring, gentle and effective. I couldn't ask for a better experience at a vet's office. I will definitely be making this veterinarian office, and doctor Juli, specifically, my regular vet from now on. Read Less
