I wish I could leave this place negative stars right now. My cat partially amputated his toe so I brought him in to have it fixed. The doctor quoted me $450-500 depending on how complicated the surgery was, then he specifically told me the bandage changes were included in the totally price. I am sure about that because I talked to my sister about it afterwards and mentioned that to her. So the surgery happens and they tell me he'll need dressing changes every 3-4 days until his stitches are able to be removed in 2-3 weeks. Okay, totally fine. I bring him in twice to get his bandage changed and the second time it seems a little too tight but otherwise it's fine. I bring him in the third time and as I'm walking out the receptionist says "are you going to pay for that?", I explained to her I already did, that the doctor had included the dressing changes in the payment, she says she's going to ask him, and now he tells her they only quoted me for 2 dressing changes, and they apparently don't have a record of the quote. How convenient. So I was charged another $25 and told to bring him in again in 3 days. I called my sister to check that I was remembering correctly, and she confirms I told her ALL of the dressing changes were included, and I'm no math genius, but 2 does not equal "all" when he's going to need 4-7 dressing changes. So now I'm kind of pissed, but whatever. I'll leave it be, but I decide to take him to a different vet for his dressing changes removed. The vet I took him to was horrified. They had been using the wrong kind of tape on him, and covered up the raw, bare skin with more dressing. They also used a bunch of really random crap in the dressing and covered it with a nice looking bandage so I wouldn't know they were freaking clueless. Top that off with them using BLACK sutures on my BLACK FURRED CAT and I will never, ever go back here. They're lucky I'm not suing them. Stay far, far away. Read Less

Dr Guajardo is heaven sent Let me start off by saying we have been to other vets where they want to muzzle my pup right off the bat because she's a pitbull and is very hyper, not aggressive at all but they always assume the worse. Dr Guajardo, was very sweet and listened to everything we had to say before conducting her eye exam. Turns out she had an aye allergy that turned into an eye ulcer. We scheduled a late apt so the price was 55$ to get her seen, he was very gentile with her and took his time to explain everything to us. After prescribing some anti anxiety meds and eye drops we paid 125$ total which was very reasonable and didn't hurt our pockets too much. Long review! This is a review for my dog Speedy that passed away last year. I wasn't sure at first if I was going to write a review for Colina because I do not want to remember again what happened but I think that people should be aware and know about this vet. You can decide for yourself if you want to bring your pet here or not.  I have been taking Speedy here for a long time. Speedy was a therapy dog and he had yearly checkups that he needed to do to continue being a therapy dog and volunteer in senior homes. We would go to Colina for those check ups. Speedy also had some internal issues, liver problems, etc and Colina is where I have been taking Speedy. We did ultrasounds, blood tests, dental cleaning, etc. Basically they have a thorough knowledge of Speedy's history. (I also want to quickly mention that one of the people that works there (with an accent) is not very helpful. When I took Speedy for dental and had questions for his after medication, she seemed annoyed when I asked for instructions or questions about the medication. There was only 1 lady there who was always helpful when I have questions but I don't know her name.)Anyway, end of August 2016, Speedy was throwing up and wouldn't eat. This is very unusual because he usually has a big appetite. I was very worried and took Speedy to the vet right away. We did some blood tests and the doctor said that based on the results, Speedy had pancreatitis. I read a lot and asked people about pancreatitis and they said that it's normal for dogs to not want to eat for awhile so it's normal to let his tummy rest. Speedy was hospitalized for IV's to make sure that he gets enough liquid. Speedy was in and out of the hospital and it was just very tiring physically and emotionally. I felt bad because I wanted Speedy to get better but he doesn't seem to be getting any better. I decided to take Speedy to another vet for a second opinion and took him to Veterinary Specialty Hospital (I left a Yelp review for them as well). It turned out that Speedy didn't have pancreatitis but he ingested a foreign object and surgery was needed. We did the surgery but sadly he was too weak and he didn't make it. I just wished that the doctor looked at all the symptoms again before assuming that he had pancreatitis. When Speedy wasn't getting better, I wished he questioned himself and tried to think of other things that will result to Speedy throwing up and not wanting to eat. The doctor felt his stomach but didn't noticed anything. When I took Speedy to Veterinary Specialty Hospital, the doctor felt Speedy's stomach and immediately said that there might be something in his stomach and that they need to do ultrasound to figure out what it was. My main point is that Speedy would have probably be saved if Dr. Guajardo noticed right away that there was something in his stomach. Speedy would probably still be alive and he would still continue to make people happy with his cute pictures and funny personality. I am the type of dog owner who would bring my dog to the vet immediately if there is something wrong with him just to make sure that he gets better right away. I trusted Colina with Speedy's life but they didn't do their job and now I don't have Speedy. I can't remember now how much his hospital bill was but it was all for nothing. Speedy didn't make it and now I am left with just a box of his ashes. I wish things turned out differently, I wish I still had Speedy but that's why I am leaving this review so people would be aware. I had been here with my dogs YEARS ago. Now I have cats and revisited this pet clinic a few months ago. Our cat was old and suffering from kidney failure. The vet was kind and  honest about our options. He recommended teaching us how to give our kitty IV meds at home and just keep her comfortable as there was not much else to do because of her condition and age. We took his advice and ended up keeping her at home for a month before deciding to put her down. The staff was kind and patient. The costs were reasonable and the vet was kind and upfront. I have 4 dogs and I have taken them here for the last 2, 3 years. Dr. GUAJARDO is a very caring and informative vet who has taken good care of my dogs. The price is not too pricey in comparison to other clinics and they have never tried to sale me products that I don't need. The staffs are friendly and they do a good job keeping the place clean.I give this place a 4 out of 5 stars because they no longer have restroom available for customers which I personally found a bit ridiculous?!?! Brought my Great Dane in at 8 in the morning for a UTI but I didn't have an appointment and I had never been to this office before. They worked with me to get my dog in and checked out very quickly even though they could have sent me somewhere else. First time here with my cat.  The front desk folks were very kind and efficient.  We had a vet named Sara. She was very nice and did not pressure us into any services we weren't ready to do.  We will come back here for any other needed services.  Our cat usually cannot function at vets, he pees himself and goes into a crying shock.  But the vet managed to put Todd (our cat) at ease.  He was scared, but was much better than at our last vet.  That was a huge win.  Plus the waiting room, did not smell! It is really a excellent vent for animals. I have one cat that do regular check in here every month. The doctors are nice and kind. The most important thing is cheap. I think here is cheaper than emergency with same quality test. And for the appointment, normally easy but it is better to do it before serval days. Really recommend. Best vent ever! Read Less

We have been taking our miniature schnauzer here since we got him and cant say anything bad about the vet. He is a super nice guy named Jesus and has had to operate on my pup twice and both times my dog has made a full recovery and cant even see a scar. Thwy have extended hours and making appointments is painless.  They accept United Pet Care insurance - one of the few in San Diego that do.  The place could use some updating but the prices are low and the place is clean which is much more important than modern amenities. When my husband and I adopted our nearly 3 year old Schnauzer a few years ago we brought him here because it was the only vet in the pet insurance network I had through my employer. I was a little hesitant about the neighborhood when we went in for his initial check up but the dr seemed knowledgeable and friendly, and the prices (even without our "insurance" discount) were great so we stuck it out. Our little boy has had 2 surgeries here to remove fatty masses over the last few years and has been in a few other times thanks to a major case of stress tummy. We also bring him here for his vaccines and flea medication. The surgeries have all gone great and the incisions are invisible now. Each time we've been in to diagnose a problem I've neither felt patronized or taken advantage of. He's been honest and kind each time. My only issues are that despite the fact that they have a note on our chart about our discount we have to remind them every time, and I really hate paying for the heartworm test each year to renew the prescription for his flea medication. The medication is pretty pricey to begin with so it almost doubles the cost. We don't live close by, and the neighborhood is rather sketchy, but he's received great care here and we will continue to bring him to Colina for a long time to come. Read Less

After adopting a five year old cat we took him to Bodhi because they offered free checkups for adopted cats and it was nearby.  Sadly we learned our $11 cat needed 1-2 teeth extracted.  Bodhi gave us an estimate...anywhere between $500-1500!  I thought that range was unacceptable so took him to colinas based off of a friends referral.  Like everyone says, no frills at this place but they get the job done well.  The vet gave us as estimate of $540-560 but we actually paid less than $500 after the procedure.  Our kitty is doing well and had no complications.  We will definitely be returning!  I wish all vets could be no nonsense and treat their clients as caring people doing what's best for their animals, rather than trying to milk us for every penny. Well, this place is about as no frills and no nonsense as you can get. No two page quotes with line items you don't need no b.s. play on your emotions as most vet places try to angle by offering 'premium comfort package' for your pooch. The admin staff gets the job done, but don't expect them to oogle after your pet and tell you that is the cutest _ dog they have ever seen.I thought car dealerships were bad with the upselling and B.S., Veterinary Hospitals are a very close second. People, shop around. The cost of veterinary care is ridiculously high and varies quite a bit.. So this brings me to Colina. Again, not in the best part of town nor do they serve you lattes and tell you how cute your dog is, but what they have is a quality veterinarian.I saved over 50% compared to the other quotes I received and my dog was in great hands.Dr Guajardo is professional and as informative as any other vet I have consulted with in the past. The main difference is that his prices are very reasonable. Matter of fact, its a lot lower than most because he doesn't add all the b.s. charges that other vets do and not because of a lower quality of care.I highly recommend this place and Dr G, I will bring my dogs here from now on.Thank You, Colina. I am so happy I discovered Colina! I have two schnauzers - one with horrible genes that results in bad teeth and allergies. The other is pretty hearty, but she is the troublemaker of the two. Even when I'm prepared for it, I always dread the big bill that comes with good vet care...Not anymore! I had both dog's teeth cleaned for way, WAY less than I paid anywhere up in North County. In fact, their starting price is less than half that of other quotes I received. Of course, this does make me pause - you get what you pay for, right? After reading the bad reviews here, I admit, I was nervous - especially since teeth cleaning requires anesthesia and that can be risky. But they both came out with beautiful pearly whites and as happy as they can be. What more could I ask for? Oh yeah, good service! And they give that too - no frills, no pushing to sell you things. The vet pointed out a couple of things and was great about explaining what was needed and why. PS - Don't come here expecting to be coddled - the staff at the front desk can be a bit curt, so if you're easily offended by this, this isn't the place for you. Read Less

As other reviews have said, don't judge a book by it's cover. The location is a little sketchy on University and the abandoned building on one side and the suspicious massage parlor on the other don't make it seem on the up and up, but the service was EXCELLENT. I took my cat there to be fixed and the staff was very friendly and helpful. They had her in an out in only a few hours and everything looked perfectly fine. The vet made both my boyfriend and I feel completely comfortable leaving our princess there. They also only charged us $120 for the spaying, a micro chip, and pain meds, which for college students is very affordable. Don't let the location turn you away, I will be using this place from now on for my vet needs :) Read Less

Colina Vet Hospital staff has been great the times I have taken my kitty in. They are very sensitive to our needs, knowledgeable, and thorough in dealing with my kitty's health. I had been to several other vets, pet clinics, and pet hospitals in the past. I have found the best one here! Dr. Guajardo is super! He is an expert in his field and listens/answers to all of my questions. The facility may not look as nice as other pet hospitals (dont let this deceive you!); however, it is very clean..The important thing here is that our pets are in excellent hands in this pet hospital.
