I adopted a kitten from Coronado Cares and was asked to visit this veterinary to get all her shots and spay. I took her at 8AM when they opened and they called me at 4PM that same day to let me know that I need to reschedule because they had critical pets walk in (understandable). I asked if they at least gave her the shots and they said no. When I showed up to retrieve my kitten the ladies at the front desk were extremely rude and were laughing as they were trying to charge me for drugging my kitten to calm her even though she is the most calmest kitten I’ve ever owned and loves to be held. I explained that I wasn’t going to pay for them doing a half ass job and asked why they weren’t able to do anything on her when they were taking in pets that just walked in the door and I got nothing but excuses. This place is very unprofessional and I will never take any pets here recommended or not.

I have been seeing Dr. D for more than 12 years now. A year ago today she help me send my sweet Kukuna over the rainbow bridge after caring for him for almost his entire life. Today I got to share something amazing with her, our new little sweet puppy Akua. I would never think of taking my animals to anybody else but Dr. D and the staff at shelter Island veterinary clinic. Dr. Darnell & Team...PHENOMENAL!!! I can't give enough praise to Dr. Darnell and the office staff. Pepe (my chihuahua aka my child) and I, are so greatful for the superior care continuously given since our first visit. When calling to make appt. they must have the phone # linked to your pets file, because as soon as they pick up, they are addressing you by name and inquiring about Pepe...small town love in a big city! They are always accommodating when scheduling an appt., usually same day (amazing)! ALL of the staff is knowledgeable with instructions, advice, and triage; from the front office to the back. Dr. Darnell is a brilliant vet, she is so sweet and THOROUGH, but yet will not do anything uneccessary to your pet or your wallet. Dr. Darnell and team always explains everything and answers any questions (because I always have a million) before doing any tests or procedures, and always give me an estimate before proceeding. They also know how expensive a dog is, so they will prioritize what really needs to be done that day, and what can wait. Last Saturday, I had a few concerns, not sure if I need an appt, but the front office offered me an appt that day (to ease my mind), but also gave me advice over the phone AND the option of a follow up call that Monday. When I received the f/u call on Monday, I confessed that I had to rush Pepe to the VCA Emergency hospital Sunday night for something totally unrelated (aspiration pneumonia and poss. pancreatitis from eating BBQ grease that day), and made f/u with Dr. Darnell in a few weeks after this incident. The staff must have informed Dr. Darnell of Pepe's condition after hanging up because THE NEXT DAY... Dr. Darnell took the time out of her hectic day to call and ask how Pepe was doing, allow with extra tips to help him recover. Pepe and I have never been treated so well and special until coming here. TRULEY 1 OF A KIND VET AND TEAM! -Pepe and Dayna*Pepe also received dental surgery w/ the office earlier this year, and couldn't have healed more beautifully!

Unforntunatley I had to take my pup to Shelter Island on the 5th day of owning him. He was just 8weeks and every owners worse nightmare. Fortunately for me I found Shelter Island Veterinary Hosptial because I still have my little pup. He's one and a half now! I can't Dr. D and the entire staff enough for saving my little one. We still go to Shelter Island for baths every week and regular check ups since he's prone to getting sick so Shelter Island is our second family. The best thing about this place is that my dog loves them! What dog loves the vet? He's so happy to go in and say hi to everyone and just walks to the back like he'll have the time of his life.
I've heard that for what I pay is pretty expensive but honestly I don't mind (and no I'm not rich, I'm a college student). The quality of care you will get at Shelter Island is amazing. I would reccomend it to anyone.

I do appreciate Dr. Darnell and her staff. She did a wonderful job with my kitty and her gum disease. My kitty was a rescue cat, who already came with gum disease. I envisioned that my kitty would need teeth cleaning every 6 months.She did such a great job, that within the year it was gone. Her recommendations for food and water additive was spot on. I am a customer for life.

Dr. Jake and Dr. Darnell are a very caring and comprehensive group. I have taken my cat there at a moments notice and each time it happens, they have no problem with it and will give us great and caring service. My cat is the healthiest he has ever been thanks to the team. From the front desk staff to the technicians, all are great and really want to help. Both Dr. Jake and Dr. Darnell give detailed explanations on what treatments they suggest and will not do anything that is not necessary. Laroy and I thank everyone at Shelter Island Veterinary Hospital.

She works with numerous rescue groups, spaying and neutering cats. Her Staff is amazing! Especially, Nancy and Kate.
We have 2 senior dogs and a senior cat, we know that they are getting the best care possible with Dr. Darnell and her team.

We have brought our dachshund Wally to SIVH for all of his 16 1/2 years. Dr. Darnell has been his caregiver most of that time. We are pleased with the attention she, and the entire staff, give to Wally - as their customer - and to us - as their customer's owners. We feel we get accurate diagnoses as well as being presented with options and recommendations for his care. Overall, we are very pleased with Dr. Darnell as our veterinarian!

We had two rescue Goldens that had complicated health issues. Balto became a permanent foster and he was assigned to Shelter Island Veterinary Hospital. I felt he received the best possible care for his epilepsy and appropriate referrals and testing. He lived two glorious years and died peacefully at home. I understood exactly how to help him and he was treated with respect and love in the office.

Dr.D & Dr. Jake were EXCELLENT in both the dental surgery & care of my (slightly overly) large dog. They caught a broken tooth that looked absolutely fine from the outside, but had been sheared off behind with an exposed root, was dead and had an abscess. When they showed it to me I was SOOOO grateful that they caught it! I trust them entirely and the front staff are kind, compassionate and clearly enjoy being there. It took me a long time to choose a vet closer to my house when I moved from North County and I know I've chosen well in Shelter Island Vet!

I have brought my cat to Dr. Darnell at Shelter Island because I adopted him from a rescue group called the Rescue House who recommended her because she treats a lot of their rescued cats. She is awesome and the staff are wonderful. Our adopted cat has a condition called stomatitis and he eventually needed to have his all of his teeth removed. Her experience in oral surgery and the special X-ray machine needed for the type of surgery is not something found in every vet hospital. Although it is a bit of a drive for me, I have continued to take my cat there due to her expertise. She takes her time with every client and the prices are fair.

Dr. Darnell and her staff are truly amazing. I cannot say enough wonderful things about their excellent service. This is truly a vet that cares about you and your pet. This team went above and beyond to ensure that my Annie was comfortable and receiving the best treatment. I appreciate the care and compassion they gave to my sick baby. Dr Darnell is very honest with her findings and delivers the news with compassion. She treated my Annie as if she were her own. The staff were incredibly patient and kind. You will never regret taking your pet here.

I adopted a kitten from Coronado Cares and was asked to visit this veterinary to get all her shots and spay. I took her at 8AM when they opened and they called me at 4PM that same day to let me know that I need to reschedule because they had critical pets walk in (understandable). I have been seeing Dr. D for more than 12 years now. A year ago today she help me send my sweet Kukuna over the rainbow bridge after caring for him for almost his entire life. Unforntunatley I had to take my pup to Shelter Island on the 5th day of owning him. He was just 8weeks and every owners worse nightmare. Fortunately for me I found Shelter Island Veterinary Hosptial because I still have my little pup. He's one and a half now! I can't Dr. D and the entire staff enough for saving my little one. We still go to Shelter Island for baths every week and regular check ups since he's prone to getting sick so Shelter Island is our second family. The best thing about this place is that my dog loves them! What dog loves the vet? He's so happy to go in and say hi to everyone and just walks to the back like he'll have the time of his life.

Dr. Jake and Dr. Darnell are a very caring and comprehensive group. I have taken my cat there at a moments notice and each time it happens, they have no problem with it and will give us great and caring service. My cat is the healthiest he has ever been thanks to the team. From the front desk staff to the technicians, all are great and really want to help. I felt he received the best possible care for his epilepsy and appropriate referrals and testing. He lived two glorious years and died peacefully at home.
