South San Diego Veterinary Hospital

San Diego, California
General Info
South San Diego Veterinary Hospital, located in San Diego, California, creates an atmosphere where pets and their owners “walk or pace” the grounds of their homes. Examinations start from attention, not touch. The staff observes subtle behaviors such as the animals’ direct eye contact, breathing patterns when hearing someone speak to them, and whether they move closer to or away from motion. Care then unfolds in parts. Thus, the animal’s anchoring, leaning, and stiffening movements determine the sequence of external skin, coat, and joint examinations. Internal Reviews: Teeth abdomen heart rhythm follow when the signs of trust appear. Pet owners report contextual details regarding changes in daily routines, noises that affect pets’ behavior, and the times shifts for walking and feeding. South San Diego Veterinary Hospital offers comprehensive services, from early-life exams and diagnostics to energy balance approaches and oral planning. They also track age-based joint health and provide illness-specific mapping. Timeframes are determined by the patterns in behavior. A number of sessions progress swiftly as consent signs become evident. Certain movements intentionally span across phases so that the animal can execute each step separately. Quiet areas and pause zones are implemented to help the animals regain balance before moving to the next step. Post-visit care into the household management aspects. What to monitor during sleep and how to establish routines, when to look for silent signals such as withdrawal from family, loss of appetite, or guarding specific areas. So instead of looking at the symptoms, an owner should watch the timing. When does restlessness occur? During which daily period do hesitations reach their maximum frequency? South San Diego Veterinary Hospital supports families in San Diego and nearby California regions by acknowledging that pet behavior is a crucial communication avenue animals utilize. It believes the pauses, nudges, and shifts pets exhibit daily demonstrate their actions rather than only during crises.

Always the best care, and my dogs love going to the vet here. Dr. Jackie is a very caring vet. On another note, there was a review where the person was upset that in an emergency they were turned away. Reality is they should be happy about that; and I've had my share of emergencies. The pet needed ER help, SSDVH is not an ER but it is the place to go for normal vet care. Read Less

Dr Jacque McAndrew treated my elderly dog and her many ailments for the last several years. She and her staff are wonderful and I am so thankful to have found them.  Cuddles's health and quality of life were greatly improved with the supplements and medications prescribed by Dr McAndrew and she lived happily for 19 years, recently passing away.  I just received a card from the Arbor Day Foundation saying the vet hospital made a donation in memory of my precious Baby Cuddles and as a tribute a tree will be planted and registered in Tahoe National Forest!  I'm stoked and honored and am deeply appreciative of this thoughtful gesture.  Thank you so much!!! Really wonderful spot, and in direct contradiction to Fernando's review, full of compassion. I spoke with Terri over the phone, following a long night up with my teen daughter and her dying kitty. Terri was kind and welcoming, and explained our options patiently. The cat passed away in the early morning hours, and Terri was an absolute angel to my wife and daughter, accepting the poor beast's body for proper cremation. Clean, professional and welcoming, we will be switching from our current vet to this convenient spot for our Beagle. Thanks, all- Top notch establishment and recommended! Read Less

Beware, this vet will try to have you purchase a bunch of stuff you don't need. I was told my dog needed $160 lab work to determine if she had ticks, if the lab work indicated tics then an additional $62 test to identify the ticks. We paid for the additional test after being told the first test did indicate ticks. After the second test comes back, HEY what do you know...No ticks...But you will have to continue buying this medication that treats something she does NOT have. Every ROUTINE visit comes out to hundreds of dollars with this ill visit coming out to $300+Funny enough, their last message was "we wouldn't accept you back as clients either" pretty much painting the whole picture for me that once the money dries up they don't care Read Less

I don't recommend anyone take their pet here. They have no compassion. All they want to do is take your money (as much of it as they can dupe you into giving). The actual vet herself is not bad, the vet techs there are among the worst.  They all have bad attitudes and are completely rude and really don't know what they are talking about. Also I believe they live in a Disney fantasy world where animals will allow people to poke and prod them and simply blush and giggle. No an animal is going to react accordingly and when that happens, watch out because the vet techs will attack you! At one point the vet techs wanted me to administer shots to my dog because he "can be a little aggressive"...hello? You're supposedly trained, not me. Mind you my dog is very gentle and has never been aggressive with anyone, but like I said, no animal is just going to allow just anything to be done to them. these guys are supposed to be the trained professionals. Last thing I'll say, whatever they quote you for a service, just know that you'll find it for much cheaper elsewhere. Read Less

I heard about Doctor Grunewald via some Facebook friends, my cat Spike was very sick with intestinal disease so I wanted to try some holistic treatments. Dr. Grunewald taught me so much about pet nutrition etc but unfortunately it was too late for Spike, he was just too sick and the disease was too advanced and he unfortunately passed away a few weeks ago. I had only been taking him here for a month and half, maybe 2 months but was really really touched to recieve a hand-written card from the doctor and staff and also just recieved last night a card that said the Arbor Day Foundation has recieved a donation on Spike's behalf and a tree will be planted and registed in Tahoe National Forest (this is also where I moved here from coincidentally) and I am blown away by such a kind gesture. My other vet where I had been going to for years did not even show me such kindness, I am so very touched and plan on seeing Doctor Grunewald when I decide to give another animal it's furrever home :) Read Less

SSDVH is overall a good clinic to bring your pets to for yearly check-ups or common procedures. They also offer holistic (alternative treatment) approaches other clinics do not offer.  Pricing is average for southern San Diego, a little bit lower than some places. They offer Care Credit to help owners to pay for large bills you may not be able to afford at once.My cat needed to have an abscess cleaned out and sewn up TWICE over the years and they handled it efficiently for around $600. The Vet that helped me both times was knowledgeable and took an ok amount of time speaking with me about treatment. Scheduling an appointment is easy and they always have been able to squeeze me in that day or the next. Front-desk staff ate friendly and caring. Read Less

I wish I could give ZERO STARSOn Febuary 29, 2016 my service dog, my beloved companion Mister Wilson, became sick in the early hours.  We took him to an emergency pet hospital which was opened 24 hours, they faxed the findings to Dr. J. M. at the South San Diego Veterinary hospital where Wilson was a patient of Dr J. M...I called Dr. J. M. at 9:00 am at her place of BUSINESS, south San Diego veterinary hospital.....  The recepcionist, (let's call her T ) refused to let me talk with the doctor to consult Wilson's condition with her.  T, was callous and uncaring. My beautiful baby, my companion, my beloved Mister Wilson passed away within hours.  Dr J. M. never returned my call, never sent an email in respond to the fax sent from the emergency pet hospital... She just doesn't care!South San Diego veterinary hospital only cares about the money not the patients. To them our dogs are merely customers.   I had seen before how they refused to admit a dog which was taken to them in an emergency!  I cannot recommend this Veterinary Clinic, nor the doctor, they simply seem not to care.  And as per their holistic aproach of energy fields and herbs well it all seems to be very dubious. Please look around for a good veterinarian, interview them, ask questions.... Ask about their availability in a time of urgency.... Etc........  If you truly love your baby please, please please don't take them to this clinic, they don't care about your baby nor about you.NOTE:My dog was a small 15 pound shih tzu, he had slight diarrhea for two days which I was treating with privious indications of Dr J.M. about a year ago when he had a bout of vomiting and diarrhea. He was diagnosed with colitis by Dr. J. M. and prescribed  carafat (sucralfate) 5 ml twice a day.  A small 2 ounce bottle cost me $65 dollars at South Bay veterinary hospital..... Read Less

She said I could bring our cat & they would take care of the storage  and cremation. We discussed the options & in 15 minutes we were on our way. The office was very warm, staff friendly & they made me & my daughter feel comfortable. The process was quick & easy. We paid less than $100 for the cremation & personalized urn. Although we are heartbroken we have comfort in knowing we left our cat in great hands. I highly recommend this facility. Read Less

Nice place but....All of the assistants and the Dr. are very nice and attentive and very detailed in explaining something. However, when it came to the herbs, they automatically think you are going to accept the herbs they give you and just assume you are ok with it, with very little explanation. They give your pet a "free" dose. And then add the herbs to your bill.I took it home tried it a couple of times as directed, nothing changed. My cat could smell it. I had to keep feeding him tuna to mask the smell. End of story its still on my shelf, not being used and it didn't help.I gave 4 stars because I feel like they genuinely love animals. Read Less

Read Less

Today we experienced a very tragic situation where our 1yr old cat was attacked & killed  by our neighbor's Rottweiler who broke the fence to get into our backyard.I called around to several pet cremation agencies and they were not available to pick our cat immediately, were too far from us or too costly.I decided to call this hospital and after telling the receptionist what I needed I felt the compassionate  & caring tone in her voice as she responded. Read Less
