PROS: The staff is friendly and the doctors truly seem to care. I've never had them try to oversell me services, and they're reasonably priced. They're conveniently located and will always work to get you in. The last time I was there with my nervous cat, the lobby was full of dogs, so they quickly got me into a quiet waiting room without me having to ask. They pay attention. CONS: Parking can be difficult. They don't offer discounts for add-on services such as nail clipping or administering flea treatment. I understand, and know these are very minor things compared to the level of care. Read Less

I've been bringing my dogs here for years and Dr. Berg seems like a fine vet. However, once you walk out they won't help you with a basic request.  I had to leave town suddenly for a month and forget to grab my dog's heartworm meds.  I had just been to the vet the week before and had my dog's heartworm test.  I called the office to double check what heartworm medication my dog takes so i could get some where i am.  They would NOT help me at all.  They insisted I had to get my meds from them or come in and pick up a written prescription in person.  Just a simple request to respond to a prescription request from another vet or online pharmacy and they refused.  So, my dog will go without heartworm meds for a month.  I've been a loyal customer for many many years and they can't help me out in a pinch.  i'm leaving this vet and going somewhere else. Recently tried out this place after feeling like my previous vet was a bit overpriced, and I couldn't be more satisfied. Every person I've interacted with, from the receptionist to the doctor (Dr. Damm), has been super friendly and helpful. Appointments seem fairly easy to get - I was able to schedule both appointments within 2 days of calling - and prices are cheaper than my previous vet. The doctor seemed knowledgeable, thorough, and comfortable handling my cat (I mean, "cat at the vet" is no bueno). Bonus: its only three blocks from my house. Second time here the first time was okay. I wouldn't recommend it anymore.  There are much better places around the corner. So I took my best friend Bentley in and after his check it was time To pay. The payment made last time was over the phone via credit card. This time they told me no. I even had a person who has a personal Credit card with my personal name on it try and fax, scan a copy over.  But NOPE. kARMA sucks. But the problem is the DR. Christy Berg, D.M.V.   She is the most rude and prejudice dr I have ever met.  Now my dog has to go home sick with no medicine because they wouldnt  take a credit card over the phone like they did 10 months ago. (I have the receipt that shows that's how they took payment)I would highly suggest going somewhere else. That's whT I'm doing right now. I will back this business until the cows come home...I have an English Bulldog and researched the best vets in town for that particular, problematic breed.  Luckily, I live up the street in PL, but I would honestly drive 45 minutes because I trust them so much.  For almost 6 years, and after multiple, sometimes unnecessary visits for allllll kinds of issues, I have NEVER once had a bad experience.  My dog simply LOVES that place and cannot wait to get into a room with a doc.  The front desk staff knows my dog by name and oftentimes they come around from behind the desk to greet him.  I must mention that Dr. Berg has been my main vet since day one and I endorse her with all my dog-lovin heart.  This business is well-run, clean, organized, kind, friendly, attentive and I've never felt (or heard from another client) I've been overcharged or taken advantage of.  Quite the opposite, in fact.  These vets are animal lovers and pet owners themselves and they truly care more about your pet's well-being than they do about the next dollar.  Take your pet here.  I promise you splendid results.  Sincerely, Frankenstein's mom Read Less

I have been going to to SCAH for 4years and have a wonderful experience overall until late. Since my former Vet left the clinic, I have been having to work with Dr. Berg for my dog's epilepsy. Before my former Vet left she had called to tell me that she had recently attended a training and that my dog may be able to wean off the life-shortening, harmful Phenobarbital. Our plan was for me to come in for the annual blood work and to create a plan get him off the bad stuff. However, when it came time for my exam she was gone and Dr. Berg was there. Dr. Berg said "no". She required i get the blood work even though she stated there is no possibility of him ever getting off. When I asked what would be done if the blood work came back that the medication was harming his liver function, she stated that they would put him on MORE medication. This is not what I want for my 10 year old, 100lb yellow lab. By the way, I have attempted to bring him in 3x for the blood work and have been sent away due to incorrect or missing instructions. Not easy to take off work, come in late/leave early, or ask family/friends to help in order to compromise with the clinic's hours. ALSO, the medication can only be picked up between 9 and 5 because a Vet must be there, so there is another (minor compared to overall issue) inconvenience. When I asked the clinic most recently if they would assist me in weaning off of the Phenobarbital to CBD (hemp oil), which is non life threatening, they said "no". They said there is not enough research to support the CBD oil, which is not what I am asking, I am asking for assistance in weaning him off the medication properly. P.S. I work for a world-renowned neurologist who treats Autism and provides CBD oil in clinic. So, if its the better option for children, how is not the better the option for dogs? I will be finding another Vet. Read Less

I took a gamble when I decided to make an appointment with Dr. Berg for my bulldog's soft palate surgery.  We live in Orange County, so the drive to SD is further than your typical vet but the staff and Dr. Berg have been very patient and accommodating with me throughout the whole process.I inquired about the soft palate surgery (or as they call it, the bulldog special lol) since October/November and haven't really found the weekday to come down until this past weekend.  As a nervous fur mother, I had plenty of questions and Audrey, Ariana, Kevin, and Sarah were extremely helpful.  The other staff members whose names I didn't catch were extremely helpful as well.  It's overwhelming to take home tons of medication with directions but Lara went through them one by one with us even though there was a printed list - so sweet of her.Dr. Berg is amazing - I loved her the moment I met her! Prior to surgery, she met with us and asked general questions to get to know us and our dog a bit more.  As an owner of 3 bulldogs herself, I can see she truly cares about them and understands the troubles we've gone through to make sure our furbaby is well taken care of.  I felt safe with her proceeding with the surgery and there was never a time where she made us feel like bad bulldog owners - she understood we weren't able to contain some of the issues 100% ourselves and that we do the best we can.Once my bulldog was done with surgery, she gave us an updated call because she knew how nervous we were as it's his first surgery.  We picked him up later in the afternoon and Dr. Berg came out to talk to us again about the procedure, post-op directions, and kindly reminded us to call them if we have any questions.Surely enough, I did! I called this morning with questions and Sarah answered them for me. Ariana and Dr. Berg called later this morning for a follow up and once again, reduced my anxiety and nervousness about his post-op symptoms. This hospital was busy when I came early morning and late afternoon (phones were ringing, waiting room was full, people waiting to be checked in) yet the service and attitudes of the staff didn't change.  They're still welcoming and carry positive vibes and assist each person or dog in a timely manner.Even though our bulldog's recovery is still in progress, I'm very satisfied with the whole process so far.  Thank you Sunset Cliffs for taking such great care of us and Tonka!! I spent several years here spending 1000s on my cats. I stopped going because of 3 really bad experiences. I had a new cat I brought in. The waiting room was so packed and they were running so behind that by the time my cat got in the exam room, she was hyperventilating and the vet would not administer any vaccines or take any blood (my cat has a rare red blood cell disease so labs are important). The vet gave me a sedative for the cat and told me to come back. The cat was given just a half of a pill and then was extremely sluggish.... I brought her in and she was treated for AN OVERDOSE! Again no shots, no labs. And, I had to pay for the fluids they flushed the cats system out with. Two visits, and more than $200 dollars later, and my cat still needs labs and vaccines. The experience was quite traumatizing as I'm sure anyone with pets knows it's no fun to watch your pet suffer. I was asked to come in a 3rd time but couldn't go through the ordeal again as I never was given a solution for the cats issues that required the sedation in the first place. When I asked for a refund of any portion of the two visits, I was denied. Seriously, after having several pets here, spending tons of money, they could not even credit me $50. The last experience I'll share regards a kitten I had that I brought in who was extremely sick. It was getting towards the close of the business day and I was advised to bring the kitten to a hospital that could monitor her all night. I was also given antibiotics that I was trying to give the kitten in the waiting room on the way out. Well the kitten had a seizure then and there and instead of taking her back in the rushed me out of the office. Sending out a vet to see this kitten would have been relatively easy and i still would have taken the cat to the hospital....it's just about some common human decency you know? Now I'm using a vet that comes to the home who doesn't ever use physical restraints on animals to get things done. It's $90 for the house call and $50 per cat....so $190 for two in home cat exams. Crossing my fingers this option works better for all of us. Read Less

I LOVE Sunset Cliffs Animal Hospital! I have an English Bulldog and they are known for having lots of health issues, so having a vet you can trust is really important. Dr. Berg specializes in working with Bulldogs and knows what's normal, what's not and what's serious and what's not. I learned the hard way just how important that is when I had a vet in CO who did not specialize in treating Bulldogs under-diagnose my poor baby's eye condition. I am thankful that he is now in good hands! Dr. Berg is the best!I love that there isn't a high pressure, guilt-trip sales pitch for extra services or products, either. I have experienced this at other vet offices but Sunset Cliffs keeps it strictly professional and even provides quotes for larger operations so you have time to plan ahead financially. They do free re-check appointments so even though you have to come back for a follow-up, they don't make you pay another exam fee (yet another thing that separates them from most vet offices!). I also really like that they always give you a follow up call the next day to see how your pet is doing. If that isn't going the extra mile, I don't know what is!Even though the office is blocks away from the beach in Ocean Beach, I have only ever had trouble finding parking once when I happened to arrive during the Farmer's Market. Usually there is plenty of free parking right out front and they even have a couple of spots behind the building that you can access through the alley. It's pretty tight though, so I wouldn't recommend it if you have a truck or a larger vehicle. I have recommended Sunset Cliffs Animal Hospital to several people since coming here because, as far as I'm concerned, it's the best vet hospital in town! Read Less

I just mention Dr. Berg' name to Kaylee and she cant sit still. She loves seeing her vet. I'm a little jealous. I have been bringing her here for most of her life. She is an English Bulldog and if you know Dr. Berg you know she has 3 of them herself and loves bulldogs. As you know bulldogs require a bit more attention then normal. It's really nice to have someone who understands the breed. I find it best to get into see here when an issue is developing. I have learned there are different actions at different stages. It really reduces the recovery time. Very straight forward with her recommendations and have always been right on with the treatment. Deserves a 5 star!!! Read Less

I was told my dog couldn't be seen because they were booked with scheduled appts even though my dog was sick. I'be never been to a doctors office or vet that could not accomodate the sick. The vet, Dr.Berg, stated my dog sounded too sick and needed to go to the ER. I told the receptionist I would be collecting my records and finding a new vet. Dr.Berg called back and said she would be willing to see my dog tomorrow. Yet 5 minutes prior suggested that my dog go to the ER because she sounded so sick? I've also had issues with them misdiagnosing my dogs abscessed teeth. The front desk does not know how to communicate and I am grateful I moved to another facility. Read Less

I decided once I moved here and adopted my cat from my boyfriends parents that with the flea problem here he should go see a vet to get the kind of flea medication that is needed in a place like San Diego. So early one morning my boyfriend took him in for his appointment that I had scheduled. He said they were great with Jack and also commented on what a beautiful cat he was especially for his age. They also were not pushy at all about getting extra tests or other things done at the time. They just assessed his need for the medication and prescribed what was needed and it was a very smooth and painless visit for both Jack and us. Soon I plan on taking Jack back here for another real check up and some other maintenance procedures since he is a senior cat and I feel more than confident that Sunset Cliffs Animal Hospital will be the best place around to take him! Christy Berg, D.M.V.   She is the most rude and prejudice dr I have ever met.  Now my dog has to go home sick with no medicine because they wouldnt  take a credit card over the phone like they did 10 months ago.

Our bulldog loves Dr. Berg!! We made the mistake of going to Banfield for the first year of Benji's life (we would have been better off diagnosing him ourselves on Pet MD), but we were referred to dr. Berg by multiple bulldog owners. Benji is so excited to see Dr. Berg every time he goes in and the staff is very friendly. Dr. Berg recommended that we do the soft palate surgery and open up Benji's nostrils so he could breathe better, and he is recovering quickly and already breathing SO much better!!! We were very nervous to put our baby under but Dr. Berg made us feel extremely comfortable and we are very happy about our decision. She truly is a bulldog specialist!! Read Less

Read Less

We had to bring my dog here for Emergency surgery!!!! She got attacked at dog beach and needed stiches and a drain. We live in Las Vegas and we were here on vacation. Not knowing any good vets in the area we just Googled and found this office. When we arrived without any notice they took her right away and got started. Our bill was extremely reasonable considering it was emergency care. Everyone we talked with was so kind and really explained everything well. They knew we had to drive back to Las Vegas that night so they made sure we had enough meds for the ride home. They called to see how she was doing the next day and even followed up a week later. When they called I had questions and they put me right on with a vet. I was so impressed with the care, I wish they could be our primary vet!!!!! Read Less

This is the best veterinarian in San Diego! They take such good care of my dogs Boogie + Nola, and Boogie feels like a superstar whenever he walks in since all of the staff will stop to give him belly rubs! We've been going to Sunset Cliffs Animal Hospital for about 6 years now and could not be happier with their service, professionalism and knowledge as well as the affordability! Dr. Berg is outstanding - we've been through some tough times with Boogie but she always makes sure that we're all okay in the end! Thanks Sunset Cliffs for all that you do!
