They quoted me a cheaper price over the phone than what they actually charged me for a heartworm check up. She quoted me $38 dollars and charged me $58 dollars. Second i ordered my pet meds from 1800 pet meds because it is cheaper. I told them they would call to verify my visit but the vet for some reason wants me to go through the trouble of sending in a written prescription rather than verifying over the phone. very annoying. No other vet office has required this. Now I have to go to the post office buy stamps and a envelope mail it, wait for them to receive it. Than pet meds has to mail my dogs meds, which is just absurd, All the vet office has to do is verify my visit over the phone like ANY other vet office.  Such a hassle. They are trying to get you to purchase the meds from them for a much greater premium, they don't care about your pet getting there meds only about lining their pockets. I was referred here by a colleague of mine over 5 years ago.  Dr Houston has been our regular vet most times, but when schedules conflict sometimes we'll see one of the other Vets there, and I feel completely comfortable with that because they ALL show genuine care and concern for my baby.  The prices are very reasonable here and I always feel justified in what I spend (trips to the vet can be pricey but here it doesn't feel like you're being overcharged and taken advantage of).  I never feel rushed or like I didn't get all of my questions answered, which is a big thing for me.  And the office is always clean.  Overall, I always recommend this place to any of my friends and colleagues who are looking for a vet. In the past with other locations; Morgan has been to say it nicely "a difficult patient" or you could say a "princess"(another word for bitch). She'd be taken to the back without me and the techs would come back with bandaids on their hands, telling me how she was not cooperative.  With today's visit; we were placed in the room. Morgan sat on the table a little scared but no attempt to run, scratch or even hiss. The Vet  checked her out with me there and then he showed me how to trim her nails-so I can do it myself in the future, save me money.  He won me over right there. He was patient, not in a rush, truly likes animals, explained everything and he was showing me how to say money.  Wow!!! I've never seen a Vet try to save you money.  I've had the same Vet for 30 yrs traveled an hour or more one way.  As of today-this is my new Vet.  Thank you Dale For the referral. Read Less

Just moved here and my poor pup was stung by a bee(first time), they got my pup in right away and checked him over for everything. Went through what to happen if the situation ever happens again. Explained what happens and what could happen. Very detailed and very friendly and super thorough. This is the only Vet Hospital I truly trust. Dr. Houston has been taking care of my, nearly, 17-year old Shar Pei/Mix and 11-year old Yorkie. My family has been here with our dog several days over the past week.  The dog was finally diagnosed with an abscessed tooth and required surgery.  I can't begin to tell you the quality of care we received.  Everyone from the receptionist, to the technicians and down to the doctors that actually did the surgery is so friendly and concerned about your pets health.  Our total bill was about 25% less than we were quoted.  Was it inexpensive? No but you won't find a more professional staff in San Diego.  We know our dog is in good hands and will be well cared for. Read Less

This is the most amazing pet hospital I have ever been to. When we had to unfortunately put our sweet puppy to sleep, while my husband was deployed, the entire staff showed great compassion for Sammie, myself and my two young sons. They also went above and beyond by mailing us a handwritten sympathy card and making a donation in memory of our sweet puppy. Fantastic front staff and dr. Dowd is incredible. She is a little awkward with humans but that is how you identify the best vets because she is amazing with my 3 Sphynx cats. She never makes me feel judged or uncomfortable. And she doesn't gouge you by taking advantage of your fear and love for your pet. Read Less

These reviews are so rigged! Every single person I've ever talked to who has brought their pet here has had a TERRIBLE experience! I'm beyond shocked the reviews are so high. Way over priced and terrible service. Not to mention the bet made me feel like I was an inadequate dog owner, which I am not! I LOVED my experience here yesterday! My pug was having an issue with his eye after I got off of work (wont go into detail, but he needed to be seen as soon as possible). I called the vet that I took him to once when we moved to San Diego, but the receptionist was really rude and said they couldn't fit us in. So here I am, at 4 pm on a Friday, frantic and searching for a place that will see him so that I don't have to go to the emergency clinic and pay out a ton of money. I looked on Google Maps and this was the first place that popped up. When I called, the receptionist was super nice, but said that they were finished with appointments for the day. She asked me what was going on and so I told her. She said "let me see if the doctor is able to stay a little late". When she came back to the line, she told me to come on down. I was so thrilled that they were willing to stay late on a Friday afternoon to see my boy. Dr. Houston was very thorough and even asked about his health otherwise. I went here for the first time when my dog was having leg pain after being new to the area. I was referred by two friends who recommended this vet office. Dr. Dowd did a physical examine and determined my dog had prostate cancer. She was very honest and straight forward with me as hard as it was to hear. I was grateful for her honesty in that she recommended not running a cancer test or completing a rectal examine because she was 90% certain it was prostate cancer so if I was ok with it not being 100% to save money and just love him the weeks he has left. When we returned two weeks later after having the symptoms exactly the way she described, they had a room ready for us. They were very sincere and asked our wishes (to be in the room or not to be, to have alone time before and after to say our final goodbyes) and what was comfortable for our dog and us. During the procedure she asked us about his life and a happy times to share. The techs and receptionist were all so caring also handling everything in the room so we didn't have to face people and by helping us get him out of the car. We can't thank them enough for making that hard day a little bit easier. I would definitely recommend Dr. Dowd and this vet office. Read Less

My pup had dental surgery and Erin was there every step of the way! She educated us on how to prep for the procedure and post op procedures. She thoroughly  explained in simple terms what was going on with my pup in ways that I can fully understand. Erin is the most compassionate and kind person, she truly has a gift with animals and making sure their parents are at ease !!!! I left my pup for her procedure knowing that she was in the BEST hands!! The staff handling my payments, phone calls, etc were very warm and professional. I was trying to cut mats out of my dogs ear and I sliced his ear. I was pretty sure he needed stitches and I couldn't get my dog into my usual vet with it being a Friday so I gave this vet a call and they had an opening. I headed down and they took a look. I had two options either stitches or they could shave the area and give antibiotics. I went with the shave option due to money. They treated my dog well and even gave him a stuffed  monkey to take home. I feel the pricing was competitive and they gave great care. I would come back again. Read Less

Best vet ever.  Not only is she amazing with your pets but doesn't give you that haughty attitude most vets do. She does the basics first to keep costs down and is great at communicating with you as she treats your pet. Best thing ever; my cat has had lots of buildup in his ears since he was a baby. Every vet I went to had a lot to say about it but no solution. I was told it was just a breed issue. I brought him in for a cleaning and with an ear infection and not only did she treat the infection but she ran a culture and was able to treat his entire ear problem! My puppy is so loved & taken care of each time she comes here. I've taken my puppy here for her 1st checkup, ear infection, and her 2nd vaccination shot. Dr. Dowd spends a solid amount of time examining my dog & answers any questions I have (it's my 1st dog). She's been helpful with raising a healthy dog. When my poor pup had an ear infection, I was able to bring her in an hour later. Dr. Dowd checked her ears & performed what was necessary. No extra charges on testing. My puppy left with clean ears & antibiotics. This office is kind of pricey, but they provide quality care. After checkups, they call to see how my puppy is doing. I took my elderly cat to see Dr. Houston several weeks ago. Dr Houston didn't just examine my cat and take tests, he stayed in the room after the exam and answered every single question I had and didn't rush off like most busy vets. He called to go over the test results on two occasions. Sadly I had to euthanize my cat yesterday. Throughout the day the staff had called me and emailed me to check on things. I was not able to get to the clinic until the end of the business day and Dr Dowd stayed past closing to assist me. Dr Dowd answered all of my questions honestly and made me feel so much better. I typically do not yelp unless I am overly impressed and I must say that as a pet owner who has seen a handful of vets in San Diego, I would recommend this clinic above all others. Read Less

The staff is extremely friendly. They are very gentle and friendly towards the animals. They also empathize with your situation and explain any questions you may have. I know I felt comfortable leaving my huge German Shepherd there. The doctor is always willing to make a phone call to go over things with you which I think is very nice. The Vets and staff at the Pet Hospital of Tierrasanta are wonderful.  From the initial visit the staff are very thorough in getting all pertinent information about our pets.  Our pug and Boston Terrier had excellent care from both Doctors Houston and Dowd.  Our pug had multiple mast cell tumors removed in the four years we lived in the area, and each time we were given options with his surgery.  The follow-up care after surgery was amazing; the doctor or staff will call to let you know how the pet is doing and allow time for question/answer.  Techs called to follow up after treatments and for reminders of any care due.   While not the "cheapest", I had no problem paying for top notch care for my two dogs who are like children to me.  LOVE the care we received there and would highly recommend the Pet Hospital of Tierrasanta. My inital exposure was to Dr. Houston, who is very personable, knowledgeable, and an outstanding Veterinarian. The rest of the staff over the years continue to exhibit outstanding professionalism and care for the customers and animals alike. had a bad experience here. I recently moved to the Tierrasanta area and wanted to find a new vet near my place for my 8 month year old kitty. I came here one night an hour before closing to see if they carry prescription feline I/D food (since my kitty has indigestion problems, he can only eat that kind).They said they do carry it and they would need a prescription from my previous vet in order for me the purchase it. They proceeded to tell me that I can have my previous vet fax over the prescription and if the fax goes through, then I can go ahead and buy the food (which I told them I need tonight since I don't have anymore food at home). I called my previous vet and they said they will fax it right over. I waited for around half an hour before the office manager would even talk to me and check on my fax (there were two clients, one in which came AFTER i came but she opted to help him first). In between all this, I asked if I can use the restroom. They said that they have one in the back but they didn't want me walking through the hallways because they weren't sure if they were transporting some medicines and wanted to keep the place clean. I asked them if they can check and they said "can't you just wait 15 minutes?!" OK.....rude. So while I was holding my bladder, I waited and finally the two other customers left so I asked the office manager if she can check to see if she received the fax. WITHOUT EVEN checking the fax, she told me that she can't give me the food tonight even if the fax went through because I needed a handwritten prescription EVEN though she had told me earlier that a fax will suffice. I was infuriated because I have no more food for my kitty. The office manager ignored everything I said, even when I told her why she would lie to me and make me wait, all she said "well sorry, I don't want to get in trouble, I cannot let you purchase any food today, you can come back tomorrow."The other lady who was by the office manager was also not that kind. She's the one who didn't let me go to the bathroom. I usually don't write any reviews but I'm just so infuriated with them that I had to log-on to my yelp account after not touching it for ages and write this review. I'm giving them two stars because I had good conversations with a customer with a Pomeranian there and that kept me sane, so really, I should be giving them 1 star. Read Less

I ended up at this vet after moving to the Tierrasanta area and needing one closer than our last one. My three pets were seen by Dr. Dowds; and I was very pleased with both her, and the rest of the intake staff in the front. I had a cat that needed eleven teeth extracted; and both Dr. Dowds and her vet tech were great. They followed through after the procedure well too. My only complaint is the price (but to be honest, as expensive as this place is... it's pretty much the norm). Clean facility, friendly staff, and I can't think of anything else but nice things. I'm sorry to hear that the other reviewer had such a bad experience. I've gone there four different times now for different reasons, and I've never experienced an abnormally long wait or clueless vet. (But then again, I was seen by Dr. Dowds, not Grafton). Read Less

We decided to visit The Pet Hospital of Tierasanata after searching via the internet and reading reviews... thus it is absolutely necessary to explain why I would not recommend choosing this vet for your beloved pet(s). Do yourself and your pet a favor and try and find a more suitable vet. Please. Ok, the first visits were average although Dr. Grafton seemed less then honest regarding his knowledge of small animals (pet rattie in our case). We should have followed our initial gut reactions. The last visit involved an extreme wait (understandable) prior to even being seen although we held an appointment. Then after being told 15 minutes more it was more like 1 hour. Don't get me wrong, I understand waiting (especially in any healthcare situation) but when you say 30 minutes try and keep it under an hour; if you can't say so or have someone explain. After an x-ray we were to discuss doing additional tests so there was more waiting. Eventually, an assistant with incredibly poor service skills literally took our pet without explaining anything to us. Note, we hadn't discussed or committed to any procedures yet. After 30 minutes or so of our pet undoubtedly being stressed out and our anticipation of someone addressing the situation another woman comes to us and says. ""I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news..."" Are you kidding me!!! This was absolutely ridiculous. She was referring to the fact that our rattie had not yet been seen and we'd be waiting longer. Finally, Dr. Grafton came in diagnosing out rattie with fluid/substance in one side of her lungs. Ok? I then asked him which side the fluid was on. He had no idea if the rattie was lying face up or face down for the x-ray. Thus, just ""guessed"" which side of the 250g rattie to stick a needle in. Not to mention the warns of pain and danger of doing such a procedure he mentioned so that we could think about it before HE decided to go ahead and do it. Read Less
