Be sure to keep the first visit be the only visit. Don't let them send your pet home to get better on their own. Because bring them back a second time effectively doubles your costs. Also, be sure to ask how suggested treatments might change outcome. A $250 x-ray for a constipated cat doesn't get the poop out any faster. Oh, and it can cost $85 if we skip the radiologist. Staff who have worked at a facility for over 20 years says a lot about the business. Arguello's clinicians have excellent credentials, its technicians are extremely competent, and the front desk is always on top of things. (Arguello also offers boarding, and though I dislike the necessity, this facility is the only one I trust.) The practice is extremely organized, and I don't believe I've ever had to wait more than 10 minutes for my appointment; generally I'm ushered right in. Extraordinary clinicians and staff: Dr. Perry Heffelfinger, Dr. Mara Weiss, Tim, Marie, Kim, and Dr. James Ina. If your finances are limited, Arguello will work with you to keep costs at a minimum. Just be sure to inform the doctor at the outset. These clinicians would much rather treat at a more basic level rather than know that animals needing treatment are not being seen at all because of lack of funds. Finally, Arguello is an ethical veterinary practice. It will support you if your animal has a serious condition and can be more thoroughly treated at UC Davis VMTH. The staff is amazing! Some have been there for many many years which speaks volumes for me. We've had two appointments thus far and called many time always with the same personal attention.Senta! LOVE the vets & staff here. My 1-yr old pup is very shy of vets because she's had two horrible experiences in her life that resulted in surgeries (car accident, and dog attack). Both vets we've seen here took extra care to be sweet to her, and the first one even got fully down on the floor and rolled around with her to make her feel safe. Can't say enough good things. By far the worst experience I've had in my 30 years of caring for animals. Over vaccinated my beautiful healthy baby toy Australian shepherd and killed it. Never give a rabies and distemper parvo to a baby under 15 weeks old and weighing only 6 pounds. California's laws suck and these people don't care so long as they are following the state law not natures law. Dr. Jacobs had the nerve to say the puppy was hydrocephalic and that caused her death. My vet who has been practicing 33 years said the puppy was perfect, and the vaccine overwhelmed her system causing her death. He said if he suspected a dog to be hydro he would never vaccinate it to begin with and any vet would agree. They also did an unnecessary amputation on my friends golden lab which lead to its death. Be smart about what vets you choose. Try for a private practice as difficult as it may be. Seven vets under one roof is a scary place.Read Less

I have never experienced such authentic sweet vet techs who clearly care about your pets. The vet I see there is so kind and honest. Gives me all the details. Not about the money. I'm so lucky & grateful for this place as I know my senior cat is getting the best treatment I could ever give him. I never feel rushed & my vet truly helps me understand so I can be there for my cat & keep him healthy. I trust them and I'm a native New Yorker. I don't know of any other place like this. Everyone I meet in the neighborhood who has pets goes here and always says the same amazing things. Perry Heffelfinger is a vet without equal.  She was the vet for my dogs from1996 until the time of her accident.  During that time I had three dogs. She is greatly missed for her intelligence and skill as a doctor and equally for her kindness and compassion. Dr. Perry Heffelfinger is one of the best veternarians I've ever met, in my entire life.  She knows both my dogs Maximum and Chloe, and after being away from the bay area for the past two years, I was extremely saddened to learn she's had a serious accident, and has been out on medical leave.   She is an amazing doctor, who I'm wishing a speedy recovery, not just because I miss bringing my dogs to her, but because she's way too great of a person to be dealing with such a tragic circumstance.   Get well soon, and please come back to work where you are adored by your patients and their guardians, we all miss you so much!!! I recently came home to find my 18 year old cat in pain and unable to move. I rushed to Arguella Pet Hospital. My usual vet (Dr. Price) was unavailable and Dr. Heffelfinger helped me. Sadly, I had to put my cat to sleep. Dr. Heffelfinger and her assistant were so kind and compassionate with me and my pet during a terrible time. I was surprised to find a card from Dr. Heffelfinger in the mail a few days after the event. The card was personalized and her words helped me feel much better about the entire process. I was thrilled to meet with a Vet who actually took the time to thoroughly examine my new puppy and assure me that it was indeed a case of round worms and not something more serious. Dr. Heffelfinger took my puppy in her arms and examined her thoroughly (unlike the SPCA vet who barely touched her!), opening her mouth, looking in her ears, checking her eyes and pointing out that her very round pot belly wasn't a result of over-eating but was INDEED a simple case of round worm (very common in puppies, most get them from momma in utero). What a relief! What a difference from the cold-hearted approach I received at the other office. My puppy was fed a full spectrum de-wormer, it went to work as soon as I got home! (I'll never eat angel hair pasta again!!) Her energy & appetite resumed within hours. The worms are all gone! Dr Joe Fong is the best vet we've ever known. He's very caring and treats all the pets as if they were his own. His new hospital is fantastic the hours are wonderful. The hospital is open from 8:00 AM to 8:00PM Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Thursday and Friday 8:00 to 6:00 and this is the best Saturday 9:00 to 4:00. Now if we need an office visit or medication the hours are great after work or the weekend. The staff is friendly. While the location can be central for a lot of folks living on this side of the city, I would not recommend this hospital for your pet . After going to a new vet, I discovered Arguello Hospital had talked me into spending more than needed on unnecessary tests, they were comparitively way too expensive, and ultimately never did diagnose my animal accurately. The care isn't that good, the staff is not that friendly, not compassionate - and ultimately they were not able to help my pet at all. Also, my cat who was pretty good about the vet, but is beyond frighteneded these days to go, after we went to Arguello several times. I only got to see Dr. Fong once and found Arguello hospital through the reviews of Dr. Fong. He is great but now he no longer works there. However, I have had Dr. Ina and Dr. Price see my french bulldog puppy and they are great. Extremely friendly and experienced. I really like the other staff as well at the front desk. However one woman there needs to improve her attitude and is very cold and even rude at times. Otherwise the other women there are great and always ready to give hugs and even kisses to my pup! I brought all our animals to Arguello and always had a great experience. The staff try hard to remember you AND all your pet's names! We saw Dr. Fong, who was great, altho in a pinch we've used the other doctor's as well and they were also great! The vets go out of their way to explain things to you and give you adequate time. They don't try to rush you in and out. We have since moved to New York and still haven't found and adequate replacement for Arguello Hospital! We were spoiled by them! Read Less

Dr. Fong goes out of his way to make puppies feel 100% comfortable at the vet. Now that my dog is almost full grown and been through many shots, neutering, etc. he still loves trips to the vet because of Dr. Fong. He makes me feel at ease, answers all my questions and gives a very high level of medical care to my dog at a reasonable price.
