In  March I took my Scooter in to Marina Pet Hospital to get checked because he had coughed once in a while and I wanted to make sure nothing was wrong. Dr, Melcom checked him out and I think he got bordello vaccine that day. They did all the blood tests and heart tests etc , over $500. worth  and a few days later I got a nice msg from Dr. Melcom that Scooter was fine, he had no sign of heart trouble and he was in great health. that was a great relief to me. He has had many teeth extracted and I really didn't want him put to sleep anymore because he was 10 but she assured me that he was fine and to bring him in for his teeth cleaning of which I hadn't done yet because I still worried about him being put "under". The week of May 20th he began to cough a bit again and wasn't eating normally so on may 24th. I ran him in to the Marina pet hospital and he never came home again. To say I am devastated and heartbroken is an understatement. When I took him in Dr. Kim said they would check him out and if he had a heart problem  with good medication probably he  could live six months to a year, I was in shock because Dr. Melcom just told me two months ago he was in great health and I told them that. The message is still on my phone machine. I wanted to stay but he told me to go on home and he would call me in 45 minutes. Roughly an hour later I got the call that I should come in and I knew by his voice something was terribly wrong.  I so regret leaving Scooty there but I didn't know.   When I got there my little Scooty ( he was only 5 lbs) was lying on a table, scared with an oxygen mask on his face and needles in his arm,  I was in such shock all I could do was cry, I just couldn't believe what I was seeing, my poor darling dog. They said he was in heart failure!!  When he saw me he calmed down but I couldn't stop crying, I just sat there and petted him and talked to him until the ambulance came. Then Dr. Melcom told one of the girls to stick this huge pill down his throat and I said he can't swallow big things like that, but they stuck it way down and that just made him choke more. He spit up the first one and they jammed another down his little throat. they then told me he had to go by ambulance to another hospital (on Irving St) because he needed more advanced care. When the ambulance came they refused to let me ride with him and either he died on the way from fright or right after he arrived, but it was before I could get there.  When the driver  walked out of the Marina Hospital with him, she  had him draped over their arm like a dish towel. I am sick and devastated  and I feel if I could have been with him he might have lived. He was frightened to be with other people and the shock was to much . If only I wouldn't have let them take him, I wish I had taken him out of there and brought him home. Neither doctor spoke one word to me while I was with him or when I was leaving. Read Less

I have been coming to Marina Pet since 2011 and have had solid and extremely attentive treatment for both of my rescued Northern breeds. Dr. Melcom in particular has been terrific, doing yearly dental work on my older guy, Nero. She once stopped everything to do emergency surgery on him and saving him from an extreme foxtail situation that would have proved life-threatening.The front desk staff is always helpful.Ive found their insurance package to be decent in reducing costs, and compared to some of my friend's dog expenses, pretty reasonable (all things considered).Definitely recommend as your neighborhood vet if you are living in the Marina. Yelp says this location is closed but I was there today. However, this place should be shut down. I've had a few appointments here and I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, but I deeply regret doing so. As one reviewer mentioned, they took my puppy to the back room for her vaccines last time. Why? My puppy came out shaking and whimpering. She continued on like that for the rest of the day, hiding in the corner with her tail between her legs. This is a puppy who is constantly playing and whose tail is always wagging. Today was the final straw though. Rather than even attempting to make my 4-month-old puppy comfortable, Dr. Melcon threw her down on the exam table and when she let out a little growl, I'm assuming out of shock, the vet wailed her on the nose with her stethoscope and proceeded to tell me that I had an inherently aggressive dog and that aggression was bred into her (she is a pit mix). She then muzzled her way too tightly for the rest of the visit. Even the vet technician in the room looked uncomfortable. And her brilliant training advice? Whack her on the nose when she growls and jam your fingers down her throat if she tries to chew on you. This is beyond an outdated approach to training a puppy, it's just plain cruel. Not to mention the cost. Every time we've gone there, we've spent hundreds of dollars when all we were there for were basic vaccines. She performs unnecessary tests and procedures to jack up the prices and doesn't even tell you what she's doing to your pet. Is consent not a thing in the veterinary field? They also try to talk you into their wellness plans and get pissed off when you decline. These people are thieves. My only positive note is for the male receptionist that works there. He's always been very kind and friendly and greets my dog very sweetly. I really hope he finds a better gig because you can tell he loves dogs and is a real people person too. Whatever you do, spare your pet and wallet the pain and do not go here. Read Less

AVOID! I had my first experience at this Vet in September of 2015 and my LAST 2 months later. I brought my Puppy into this vet when I first received him at 8 weeks old. My precious little puppy went through the usual vaccinations they give to Puppies and he was sent on his way. A nice vet, I thought. AND so close to where I live! I thought this was going to be the beginning of a beautiful relationship with my neighborhood vet. WRONG. Immediately, as I was checking out, the front desk secretary gave me an option to get vet insurance, to which I declined. She seemed very insulted at this (maybe she gets a commission for every insurance policy she receives?), for which I don't have the slightest clue why. She then gave me a dismissed attitude on the bill and when I needed to come back in for his future shots and wellness checks. ... MAYBE she was having a bad day? I let it side, and I left in an okay manor. FAST FORWARD 2 months. My puppy is due for another round of shots, as I am notified by mail. We make an appointment and arrive a week later for his shots. I am "greeted" by 2 receptionists, (Same woman and now a new woman to accompany her) who have the meanest and rudest attitudes. They are, without a doubt, the most unpleasant women I have ever encountered at a hospital type setting. Terrible demeanor... only care about their lunch they are ordering.. I can go on, but I won't because it makes me so sad to have to remember this establishment, but I it's my duty as a pet owner to warn others to stay away.Anyway, as I get past these 2 unpleasant women, I am taken into the room to where the vet (ALWAYS A DIFFERENT VET), weighs my dog and takes him away to get his shot. AWAY!? I asked if I could go with him, as he is a little scared, and they say NO ONE is allowed in the back. I plead my case saying my dog is scared and I would like to go with him and they THREATENED me saying that If I don't let them follow procedure, then I will have to go elsewhere. Dumbfounded and regretfully, I let them take him. BIGGEST REGRET. my dog came out, shaking, whimpering and with a new leash (?). Sad, mad and confused, I asked why he had a new leash? They avoided the question and said I could keep the new leash. I asked again. WHAT HAPPENED to the leash we came in with?! They hesitantly stated he got a LITTLE scared when they restrained him for his shot and he peed on himself and his leash. WHAT! They are so brutal and evil here at this vet that they terrorize the animals to quickly move the animals along to be able to have many appointments, I suppose. I was so upset that they were so harsh and insensitive to me and my dog. They have completely traumatized my dog to the point were he can not be in a vet's hospital (We go to a new and AMAZING VET DOWN THE STREET, URBAN PET HOSPITAL), without being a complete ball of nerves. AND it doesn't end there! Again, I had to face the terrible women at the front to get my bill. I asked if they could bill me as my husband was on a business trip with the card we use for these transactions. they said absolutely NOT, and that if I didn't pay at that exact moment, they would send it to collections, Immediately and my credit would be docked! They are so evil here, I can not even fully express my bewilderment. Maybe, this is my fault for not having the card, but they were so rude and short with me. So brutal. I just bit the bullet, paid with my savings account, and NEVER CAME BACK AGAIN.NEVER USE THIS VET. They should be shut down for unlawful practicews, and I do not hesitate to mention this every time one of my friends is in need of a vet. Read Less

At your most vulnerable, Dr. Melcon will reach out and take your wallet. I've taken my 1 year old dog to MPH since he came home, and I've worked with three vets there, but unfortunately had to deal with Dr. Melcon each time I was in an emergency situation - the first time a bite from another dog, second time an allergic reaction and then an internal blockage. Each time Dr. Melcon's care was horrendously expensive and while I initially thought her expertise was guiding the care - I think she just throws as many procedures as possible in case she catches something. In the last case - my dog had an internal blockage. She took him in back for an xray, came back with an xray AND a sonogram - for another $300. Basically every time they go in back expect an unexplained, unapproved charge. All in the visit cost me $1225 WITH their insurance (It was $2200 without). Please note - they didn't actually do anything aside from diagnose and give an IV - the blockage cleared on it's own. WHATEVER YOU DO - DO NOT ALLOW DR. MELCON TO TREAT YOUR ANIMALThe pricing at marina pet hospital is highway robbery, they've essentially doubled standard SF pricing and then let you buy an "insurance" plan that just reduces their rates to about 20% above industry standard. There are better options, vets that respect you rather than try to exploit you. Avoid Marina Pet Hospital at all costs - or be prepared to pay all costs. Read Less

I usually don't try to bash businesses in these reviews (this is my first 1 star rating ever). I took my golden retriever into the vet (@therealmissydog, follow her on instagram) because she had a growth on one of her eyelids. The vets told us that it was a benign tumor that would cost $3,000 to laser off, or we could buy insurance and then only pay $1,500 (but continue to pay insurance). Not only that, they told us that there was a decent chance that they would hit her tear duct during the surgery, which would mean Missy would cry... forever. We got a second opinion from another vet who said that he thought it was just a stye and to press a warm cloth on her eye for 10-15 minutes per day for some time and see if it shrinks. Sure enough, after a week, the stye/benign tumor is no longer there. Again, I do not give 1-star out of spite or because I think they were trying to rip me off. The vets were all very nice people and I think were genuinely concerned with the well-being of Missy. I give them 1-star for their complete misdiagnosis of my dog, when the cure all along was putting a hot towel on her head. Read Less

Honestly, do not use this practice! On the phone I will say that the staff was nice and friendly but that sure did change when you actually arrive. 3 receptionists that I could see and all they cared about was the food that just had been delivered to them, I get it I love my food too but feeling like I am in inconvenience to the facility, I should have turned around and left. The doctor came in to see my poor sick puppy here's what happened I explained what she was doing. His reaction took a temp and looked in her eyes, looked at her and then said I will have the assistant type up a list of services and prices and you can choose what you want to do?!?! What? Are you serious? No guidance and if I wanted that I had to pay more money! I had to pay $75 for 10 min for this so called "vet" to tell me what a previous vet I called previously had suggested! Come on its expensive the least you and this office could do is act like you actually care!!!! Maybe if I was the delivery food service they would have cared about us more We will go elsewhere for help. Oh I must add I did get a wet dog food that was about $5 a can to see if this would help?! Came here for the first time hoping to choose a new vet for him. We came early and still waited about 10 minutes after our appointment time to see the vet. I guess because only one vet was working that day, that it was harder for her to see everyone on time. The staff at the counter was very nice and explained the healthcare plan that they offered thoroughly and I was sold. I saw Dr. Melcon who recommended me to Dr. Wells for my dog's upcoming orthopedic surgery. Will provide an update with that after he heals within a 2-3 months. She was nice and knew what she was talking about - the x-rays itself was expensive, but I expected that since it was an average price everywhere else. It took awhile for my dog to get x-rays but I guess because he's such an active dog, it was probably really hard for her to get him to sit still. We didn't get to go in with him, but that's alright. I am sitting here in disbelief after having read recent reviews for Dr. Caroline Kim. It's as if they're describing a different Dr. Kim. From what I can tell, none of these reviewers has known her as long as I have: over 10 years. Yes, I've known Dr. Kim for more than a decade, so I'd say I have a pretty good idea about what makes her tick.Simply put, she is AMAZING.My wheaten terrier, lucky, had been seeing Dr. Kim since she was a 4 month old puppy. Sept 2002 was our first appointment.Recently, I had to move from SF to Brooklyn, which i was very conflicted about.  one of the main reasons it was so difficult to leave was knowing I'd be hard pressed to find another vet of Dr. Kim's caliber.Dr. Kim is compassionate. A wonderful bedside manner. She's hugged me when I've cried in her office. She's called to check on lucky after a surgery. She loves animals and it shows. She without a doubt loves my dog, hugging her on every visit. Taking special care with her because of a neck issue. Lucky can be a drama queen, and as a result, difficult to deal with. Dr. Kim and her wonderful staff never got fed up with lucky, and took the time to go the extra mile to find out what would calm her so she would relax and feel comfortable: one of the awesome techs told me that lucky likes body contact, so when they give her an injection or some other procedure, they hug her close to them. Dr. Kim is whip-smart. From day one, I've been impressed with her way of approaching problems. There is a logic to her process, which I can appreciate, being the daughter of scientists. It was a welcome relief after going to several vets who appeared to try things randomly, without a clear strategy, as if they were just grasping at straws. Not so with Dr. Kim. She usually lays out at least two strategies, giving the pros and cons, answering my many questions with the utmost patience. Here's another of her amazing qualities: thorough explanations BEFORE starting any procedure.Again, I can't imagine Dr. Kim treating clients as some of these reviews claim. For TEN YEARS Dr. Kim has presented me with clear and detailed options AHEAD OF TIME. She thoroughly outlines the pros and cons, as well as the costs. And wherever she could, knowing money was tight for me, she helped me to find the most cost effective way to provide the best care for lucky. In 10 years not ONCE did i ever I feel she performed any unnecessary tests or procedures, nor was I charged for anything in error.Dr. Kim even offered to speak to my new vet in Brooklyn to brief her on Lucky's 10 year history. An 80 page PDF. Dr. Kim felt it was crucial for Lucky's safety to personally explain Lucky's neck issue and "behavioral challenges" to the new vet, so lucky isn't mishandled.Dr. Kim spoke to my new vet yesterday, in fact. And after the call, she reassured me that I will be in great hands.I can tell I'm going to really like my new vet. And if she's even half as awesome as Dr. Kim, Lucky and i will be very, very lucky. You can't get any better than Dr.Melcon and everyone at the Marina Pet hospital. I get teary eyed with emotion writing how great they are all there. I have been dog walking for 14 years now and I have seen some pretty pathetic vetinary care with so many critical wrong diagnosis but have never had a mis diagnosis by Dr. Melcon. She puts the pets first and not the person or money. I almost think she is psychic (just kidding) with how right she is all the time and just by hearing the symptons taking a quick look and knowing what to do. If she can not figure it out she has no ego and will send you to Davis or somewhere else. She will consult other vetninary clinics if she has to. She wants to just help the dog. She is supposed to work on some days only to 4pm but I have known her to stay until midnight with some of my client's dogs and she lives in Peteluma with four kids and husband. She works four days a week but has the other doctors on the other days call her at home on her day off. She gave me her home number when my dog was gravely ill with cancer. She talked me through the entire process and at that time he was going to Davis. She called Davis without me knowing to check in on his progress. She goes above and beyond the call of duty over and over for her pets she cares for. And she is GOOD at what she does as a doctor. Read Less

I'm a former client, so this is probably more brutally honest than most reviews. I had to switch after taking my cat here for ten years when I moved too far away. The care you get here is the gold standard, but you pay for it. They run a lot of tests and do everything very thoroughly, and so you end up paying quite a bit for all of that. In my case, I was getting my cat's teeth cleaned every year for ten years here and paying a small fortune every time. However, my cat developed a heart murmur and teeth cleanings became too dangerous to undertake. They caught the murmur and advised to skip the first teeth cleaning. It's too dangerous to put a cat out to do a full teeth cleaning when the cat develops a heart murmur. Two years after the last cleaning, I brought the cat in for an exam to the new vet. The new vet RAVED about how well my cat's teeth looked and RAVED about how thorough the blood tests had been at Marina Pet Hospital. Here I am, stuck in a situation where full teeth cleanings are now all but out of the question, and so it was only the fact that everything had been done right at MPH that is keeping my cat's teeth in his mouth right now. Otherwise, I'd be looking at a very dangerous extraction. I can't say I was happy with the bill at MPH, but when you get stuck into a situation where it becomes too dangerous to do a full teeth cleaning, you are lucky when the prior ones were done right. They do things right here, and it's expensive to do. But they probably saved me a fortune on the back end, so it probably all evened out. Read Less

Dr. Melcon can be blunt, but she is a great doctor who really truly cares about the pets. I had one short visit with Dr. Kim and she was wonderful as well. My vet bill for 4 nights of hospitalization was so reasonable - if your pet has a chronic illness get the insurance, I more than made the money back within the first two visits. I understand why some people might give this place a low rating, your pet (a.k.a. your baby) is sick, they can't tell you what hurts, you're frustrated, and then you have to pay a vet bill?? But vet care isn't free and this place is more than reasonable. Bottom line, after 5 days in a row there and 4 days in the back room visiting my cat, I found the entire staff, front desk, vet techs, and vets to be nice caring animal lovers willing to do whatever they could for me and my darling cat Angel. My husband and I just moved to San Francisco from Washington, DC with our dog Sampson. Sampson needed a bortadella shot in order for us to start taking him to doggie daycare. I founded Marina Pets through a quick google search and gave it a dry. We were very impressed! The receptionists were friendly and helpful and got us an appointment for later that day. Prices are good - $63 for the first time visit plus $18 for the bortadella shot. When we arrived at the clinic, we were seen right away. Dr. Kim had a great bedside manner - Sampson loved her and was very calm. She answered all our questions and gave great advice. We couldn't have had a better visit. My 2-month-old puppy was completely calm and relaxed the whole time, even when she was getting a shot, and I credit the vet's friendly and calming demeanor. Read Less

Read Less

This is the vet for you if you enjoy getting ripped off!  Seriously.  I've been going to Blue Cross Pet Hospital since realizing just how BAD this practice is.  I really don't know how they stay in business other than most people are seriously hard up or just don't care about supporting a business who takes advantage of their customers.  I personally look forward to the day this company's closes its doors due to lack of business.  The staff is also a bunch of underpaid, unprofessional individuals who have serious attitudes.  DO NOT USE THIS VET. Read Less

I can't say enough great things about this practice. I've seen 3 different doctors here and all care so deeply about my dog and take the best care of her. The best part is they are open 7 days a week. Instead of having to wait until Monday to call or go to emergency room, they answer and can advise as to whether I can wait until their first available appointment or get her to ER. In addition to that, they always have an opening the next morning. I never have to wait. 5 stars all the way!

We have lived in SF for 34 years, always with 1-2 dogs at home. I have full confidence in all the vets here but rely on Dr. Melcon's wisdom and experience. She has seen us through many operations and last moments with our wonderful dogs. We moved to Mill Valley about 10 years ago and tried switching vets. We had a new puppy with bladder control issues. After many visits to this new vet and no diagnosis, I returned to Dr. Melcon who immediately diagnosed our pup with a urinary tract infection. I was so grateful. We are back in SF now and so appreciative of Marina Pet Hospital. The front office staff are always welcoming and organized and very personable. Read Less

Will update my reviews as we go in for more visits this year. Read Less
