There aren't enough stars to award Dr. Thies and his team of professionals.  Dr. Thies has been my vet for many years and has taken excellent care of the various dogs I've owned.  I currently have two dogs; a Miniature Pinscher and a 105 lb Germany Shepherd I call beauty and the beast!  After recently examining my Min Pin for a growth on her belly and a follow up examination a week later, Dr. Thies took the time to explain what he believed to be the issue and what course of action he would recommend since I'm relocating to the East coast in a few days.  I left Dr. Thies office feeling very confident in his professional opinion.  I highly recommend Dr. Thies and his staff to anyone having a need for very caring and excellent veterinary services. This review is long overdue.  But without question, Oak Grove Hospital is the absolute worst vet I have ever visited.  I brought my dog here at the suggestion of a friend who thought highly of Dr. Thies.  My dog was extremely sick at the time: coughing, lumps and bumps all over his body, throwing up.  I had already been to two vets to no avail and was desperate to find answers as to what was wrong with him and how to help him effectively.  Dr. Thies dismissed his illness and symptoms, stating he thought there was nothing wrong with my dog and conjured a guess that my dog would probably live another 5 years (he was 9 at the time).  When I asked about the lumps and bumps, he said it was not uncommon for dogs to get such things. When I asked about the coughing, he suggested that maybe he was cold and I should buy him a sweater.  A sweater?!  This is what I paid for?! Unbelievable!!  I left upset and in disbelief that a seasoned vet could be so short-sighted.  Thank God, shortly thereafter I found a vet in Berkeley who was able to appropriately assess and treat my dog.  He gave him a steroid shot, and within 24 hours, my dog had stopped throwing up and the lumps and bumps on his body were getting smaller.  Although my dog did eventually recover from this illness, he was later diagnosed with cancer of the bone marrow and died last year.  After his death, Dr. Thies' office called to say he was due for a checkup (he didn't live another 5 years). Dr. Thies has been my dog's vet for two years, since we moved to the area. He has given her all of her vaccinations in the past two years. This time, after I told him at length about how in her old age she has been nipping at some people and asking whether she should be medicated for anxiety, and after he palpated all her legs, belly, and head and had used his stethoscope and examined her eyes, he went to give her the bordatella vaccine by mouth and she got startled/afraid and nipped at him. Then as he proceeded to upbraid me and blame me and refuse further treatment to her, she stood there completely calmly. I don't know if she actually hurt him in any way, but I certainly saw no signs of blood. It's not like she's a bloodthirsty attack dog. He told me I should have warned him (wasn't I just telling all about how she'd been nipping people?) and that I should have muzzled her (he's been her vet for two years and never told me that before, but now I somehow should have known that and it was completely unforgivable that I didn't?). Anyway, his exact words were "You are dismissed," before declaring that I should have warned or told him and that I should have muzzled her. His vet tech told me when I was trying to pay in confusion and tears that they have muzzles there. Why didn't he muzzle her and continue vaccinating her? How can a vet not expect that an animal, especially a geriatric dog who he's just been told had nipped some people, might react in fear to having their mouth grabbed? It makes no sense that an experienced vet would be unable to deal with this. You get the sense that this guy has academic knowledge but is ill suited to work with the public or any animal that is not at all times completely submissive to all humans. He should be a lab researcher, not a veterinarian.Read Less

Office staff was very friendly and I actually liked them a lot.  As for the vet (Dr. Thies), I will never take my cat to see him again.  In pulling her out of her carrier he was very forceful and scared her to death.  I could have looked past this as he may not have had time to slowly coax her out, but the rest of the experience was intolerable.  I took her in because she had been sneezing thirty times a day for the past two weeks.  All he did was weigh her.  Didn't listen to her heart, lungs, or inspect her in any way.  Every other vet I have ever dealt with would at least give a cat a general lookover, especially if the owner has a specific concern.  He just said it is probably allergies, that's literally all he did (other than weigh her).  He then proceeded to lecture me on how our cat is 'wild' and 'undomesticated' simply because she was hissing at him because she was terrified.  He was not a pleasant person to deal with at all, made no effort to calm/diagnose our cat, and charged $75 for this.  Will not return to this veterinarian. We took both our cats here when they were having issues eating. Turns out they had teeth that were being eaten away because of some bacteria or something on their teeth combined with the plastic of their dishes! He was able to remove the bad teeth and save the good ones, and gave us a few things to do to help, and within a week both were much much happier. He was very gentle with them, and did free followups to make sure everything was going well. He also didnt try to tack on a bunch of unnecessary stuff as I have had happen other places. We have been going to Dr. Thies for about 10 years for our dogs and cats. He and his staff are very knowledgable and compassionate. I love the fact that he *does* talk and give me information for my pets. When our Golden Retriever was getting up in years (around 13 years old) he talked about the transition into old age for dogs and talking to my young kids about it. He doesn't just fix them up and send them home, but he really wants all the best in health for our pets. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that the rates are a bit pricey. However, even when my husband was between jobs I kept going to Dr. T, because you can't really put a price on trust. When our Golden was nearly 16 years old and had to be put down I was so impressed by the compassion of Dr. Thies and his staff, and glad that I didn't go to an impersonal, cheaper clinic. They did what they could to make a very difficult time go just a bit more smoothly. I recommend them to all my friends with pets. Read Less

This vet seems to know what he is doing and we've never had any physical issues with our pets...but he needs to learn when to shut his mouth!I had just adopted a purebred dog and brought it in for a check-up and he was going on and on about how purebreds are too expensive and I should give her back...like what? She's my dog, I'm not going to just return her...also you don't know my life!! We are young but have plenty of money to take care of our dog...Also, we had to put our family dog to sleep (a different dog) and he would not stop talking during the process. Like dude, I know this is probably awkward for you but shut up! I don't want to hear your rambling during this tough emotional time :/Oh and yeah it's expensive and imo probably convinces you to do unnecessary procedures.  So I guess if money is not an object and you don't care about someone blabbering it should be fine lol. We've been clients of Dr Thies for almost 20 years, back to the time when he and Tammy came by the house in the Vet Mobile!  We have indoor cats, but - in addition to the regular check-ups - Dr Thies has treated them for: gallstones, puncture wounds from bites, diabetes and acromegaly.  He's also very caringly  put down 4 sick or very old kitties during this time.  Dr Thies has been extremely thorough at all times, and didn't hesitate to recommend a specialist when needed (for the diabetes/acromegaly).  His "bedside manner" is very supportive - we've never felt that we're being rushed out.  And, he stays up-to-date with the latest research, so we feel confident that our pets are getting the best treatment available. We give Dr Thies "2 paws up!" Office staff was very friendly and I actually liked them a lot. Really upset with this doctor. I brought in my gentle Rottweiler. I scheduled an appointment ahead of time, and when I arrived  he looked at my dog who is large but showed no signs of aggression and said in a curt manner "I'm going to have to pass." I'm a paying patient, I didn't come to you for a job interview. If you are uncomfortable with a large breed that's perfectly understandable but state that in a polite manner you pompous poodle. I would highly recommend him. Read Less

Read Less

I have known Dr for many years, my Mom used his service when he was mobile. That was a long time back, but one thing is steadfast with Dr his honesty and straight forward no nonsense approach to medicine. He is trustworthy and will not up sell you a bunch of junk. I am in pet care and take other peoples pets to vet appointments and have seen a bunch of quacks who charge up the ying yang for services I know Dr could probably find unnecessary. I mean this when I say Dr is no crook!!!! Love him to boot....he has a great rep ore with my pet.

We give Dr Thies "2 paws up!" They literally charge you for everything. Gave me paperwork explaining how to give dog medication and also took 30 mins explaining something I read on that exact piece of paper. Decided it was necessary to bill $60 for that explanation. I didn't know I was dealing with someone who passed the BAR exam. Needless to say I made my case and walked out. Wasted my time and their own. Go somewhere else. The younger ladies were really nice though. :) Read Less
