I have taken several of my dogs as well as family members dogs here for care. I have done puppy check ups, vaccines, c-sections, had allergy evaluations, and much more. I have been coming to them for a few years now and I don't think I would trust my dogs with anyone else. I first found them back when I lived in San Jose and was looking for an affordable vet. After moving to Hollister, I still take my dogs here because I like them so much. And it is still the most affordable place around. And I've checked their prices with many many other vets and have not found another vet that is more affordable while also offering good care. This review is long overdue! A couple years ago my iggy broke his leg and the staff there took such great care of him. His leg healed 100% and I feel very fortunate to have found such an amazing clinic for my two pups. The clinic has always been clean, the prices are very affordable and the staff and service is exceptional!  I'd like to personally thank Elizabeth, Mariana, Esmerelda and Dr. Weiner for everything they have done for my two pups! I've been bringing my dogs to Story Road Animal Hospital for 20+ years now. My first dog lived to almost 19 years of age and always received excellent service. The vet technicians are amazing - very kind and caring. I've seen a few different veterinarians in this office over the years - they seem to rotate a lot recently but they've all been great. My current dog is a handful and they've always been great with him. He is a nervous, anxious mess and can barely be handled when nervous. He's so "special" that I had to resort to bringing him to Story Road for grooming because he had to be sedated in order to be groomed. When his congestive heart failure became too much to handle sedation, the awesome vet techs (Elizabeth and Esmeralda) braved grooming him without sedation. I've so appreciated everything they've done for my grumpy little buddy. I've loved their caring service so much that I've continued coming here despite moving to Gilroy. Unfortunately my buddy can no longer handle the anxiety associated with grooming but I am so grateful for the wonderful care he has received at Story Road over the years. Read Less

Brought my bulldog in for corkscrew tail amputation, eye & dental procedure. From start to finish the staff, technicians and doctor are caring, understanding and go above and beyond to HELP.  We drive about 25 miles to get to Story Road Animal Hospital because of their friendly service and their love for animals. Used to be the best vet in the valley. They have become similar to all the other vets in the valley ... pushing expensive meds and products. The area has become impacted, don't even try to park in back of you have a pick up ... two tiny spots in front! Parking is unacceptable.Read Less

The vet assistant seemed rude and unwelcoming. The vet did not even give clear explanation of what was going on with my dog. We basically walked in to pay for them to tell us we had to pay an additional 500 for more examinations. We ended up the same way we walked in. I've done rescue for 20+ years. So I've encountered many different vets over that time and today I meet the vet unicorn. (Vet unicorn is when you can dream of the perfect vet situation but you know that doesn't exist. Well for us, we found it here) From the woman who answered the phone to the nurse who cared for my dogs wound (Yes after all these years, I broke down and took in a dog for myself. I got a beautiful blue heeler rat terrier mix that was hit by a truck and is paralyzed in the back) EVERYONE was incredibly kind. I took in my Uzette about three weeks ago and she had open wounds from dragging her legs on the back of both joints. One day they would start to heal then she'd lick them and they'd be worse the next. I came to a point I needed help and for the life of me I couldn't think of what vet to take her to. All these years and all those vets and none of them stood out as my top choice for my dog. So I woke up early this morning and decided I was going to find a vet in the San Jose area I could take her to while my son was in school. I went to my trusty yelp and began reading reviews. And that's when I found this place. I called after dropping my son off and the young lady let me know they accepted walk ins. I got there around 10:00 and I was already back in an exam room with 10 minutes. And no more than another 10 minutes the doctor was there to see us. Super caring towards my Uzette and gave me a solid course of action to help her get these open wounds healed finally. What's really nice is they give you an estimate and breakdown of a course of action so you can decide if you want to proceed, which items you want to do and if you can afford it. And the exam fee was 40 or 45 dollars (Sorry don't have my bill in front of me)! Heck the SPCA in oakland charges 52.00 just to be seen. In the end, what I paid for the exam, wound care and antibiotics was less than a visit to the grocery store and a spree at Ross. The fees here are beyond reasonable. But what stuck out to me the most is the entire staff was so lovely to us. No appointment. And they got us right in. The place is super clean. And all these dogs that came in while we were there were super quiet and relaxed. I've never seen that at a vet but that speaks to the overall vibe to this place. Even my Uzette who normally barks at strangers never made a peep.  It was as if she knew they were there to help her. If you need to find a solid vet with affordable prices (nothing worse than having to try and decide what meds you can afford to give your dog. When you can have a place where you don't have to make that choice, it's such a wonderful feeling) and a staff that truly cares for our furbabes you need to come here. I cannot thank everyone here for their kindness and care for my baby. And yes, I have found my Uzette's vet. Heads up- they have two parking spaces in front and a parking lot in the back but the side drive to it is super narrow so be careful. If you suck at the driving cars ride at Great America like I do, then be super careful. ;) Read Less

The reason why I love this place is because prices are fair and great service.  I have 3 dogs so things can get expensive.  My dog has been licking his right paw for a couple of days and it started to get red. So,  I called around and no luck for same day appointments.  Finally I came across this on yelp and it so happens I'm down the street from them.  I brought him in and they did an exam and said it was probably a bug bite and to watch it. The next few days I called in and said now his paw is swollen and I think its something different. They were able to squeeze him in right away.  Come to find out he had a fox tail that got stuck in between his paws and had moved its way all the way inside.  They told me he would need surgery to remove it.  All I could think of was dollar signs and debt.  They quoted me a very reasonable price and was able to do it same day since he had nothing to eat that morning. Five hours later my buddy came out like a champ with a cast on.  He was happier than ever and not in anymore pain!!! Job well done SRAH!!! Read Less

$45 per visit and + anything else your dog needs but they always let you knkw becore. I cannot express the gratitude to have had such great care for my puppy. Unfortunately for us his parvo virus was too far advance but I am grateful that out doctor took the initiative to try on our first visit. By our second visit we had to put our baby down. And it was for the best and she (the doctor) helped us best understand that it was the right decision. He was only 9 weeks and I loved him with all my heart. Read Less

We have been bringing our two pooches to see Dr. Weiner for many years and are always impressed with his level of dedication and care. He goes out of his way to ensure that we understand everything and is always there for our dogs when they are sick, even during his off hours. The staff is very friendly and the hospital is clean. The lobby has been newly remodeled also! There is no way to get our dogs to be comfortable at any vet's office, but Story Road Animal Hospital always goes above and beyond to take care of our pets in the most compassionate way. Read Less

Story Road is pretty great in my book. Both my parents are veterinarians and I have worked at 3 animal hospitals (2 of them AHAA accredited). Generally, I know my stuff...so I know when someone is trying to pull one over on me and I definitely know what it looks like when veterinary staff is just trying to make money.The staff is wonderful and clearly love the animals. :)In the short time we've been going here (almost a year), our little (60lb) girl has had:Annual exam with vaccines6mo fecal check (which resulted in treatment)Foxtail extraction/dental cleaningFor the details:Annual:The veterinarian never once tried to push me into unnecessary vaccines, but did her duty to tell me about them. Where we lived was near a creek, so I asked about heartworms around here. Again, I got the assessment without the over-sell and she said if I decided later I wanted to test her and get her started on prevention, I could do it without having to have her examined again. Eventually we did (our landlord had a lot of standing water at his place). A simple in-and-out before work.6mo fecal check:We take our dog to the dog park and other parks very regularly where she is exposed to who-knows-what, so we thought it best to have a fecal exam every 6 months rather than once a year. Glad we did. It came back positive for lots of nasty things (which is what I should expect from drinking from stagnant mud puddles). They gave us the medications. It was a bit more than we anticipated, but she needed it. I would knock off half a star simply because they forgot to give my husband one of the medications for the most prominent of the conditions she had and didn't give him any instructions or tell him what it was they were treating. As I understand it, their normal front-desk staff was off that day. I called them about the second medication and was able to pick it up the next day (and was also informed as to what it was she had), so it all turned out alright. That could have been a problem had I not known the two meds would not have been mixed in the same solution. It was handled professionally, though.Foxtail extraction/dental:This is where they really earned all 5 stars! Our little girl inhaled not one...but TWO foxtails at the park. I had heard the horror stories. We were on a budget and I was terrified that I had just killed our dog. I was so scared to see the cost, knowing what our budget was. The veterinarian was very empathetic. She brought me the numbers. I played with our budget and managed to ask her to do a dental cleaning while our dog was already going to be under...a two-for-one. It worked out beautifully. Foxtails and dog breath gone in one visit. My husband and I have brought our family pets to the Story Road Animal Hospital for over 20 years. Dr Ronald Weiner and his entire staff have been very attentive and effective in treating all our family pets throughout the years.Recently, our 5 1/2 year old Yorkie, Pippa, had a medical emergency regarding a congenital liver shunt.Dr Weiner was really helpful in getting a correct diagnosis and referral for Pippa's  surgery.  Pippa is on her way back to good health.We really appreciate the added effort, time and care Dr Weiner and his staff gave in comforting us and making sure Pippa was getting the best treatment possible.Thank You Story Road Animal Hospital. My baby Jane loves it here, her awkward, over affectionate sometimes uncontrollable like self is easily handled by the vets here. She's always been shown patience and love when I've had to bring her in. My car will never fit through the driveway to the parking in the back, I just park next door or upfront when available. If you drive  anything full-size or wide body coupe-type you will be grinding your teeth through your small voyage! Read Less

NEVER TAKE YOUR PET HERE! If I could give this place 0 stars I would. I took my cat here because it looked like she had an ear infection... BIGGEST MISTAKE I'VE MADE SINCE ADOPTING HER! Dr. Kristensen-McCulloch examined my cat and told me that she needed to clean out her ears to asses what kind of infection it was. She advised me that putting my cat under anesthesia would be the least stressful way to do it and to leave her there for a couple of hours.  I wish I never did. When I got her back, the doctor did not even talk to me in person. The front desk staff only answered questions I asked, they never told me anything went wrong during the procedure. They gave me drops to put in her ears and sent me on my way nearly $260 broker.After going to a couple of days, my cat was getting worse not better. I took her to another vet and there I found out that her left ear drum had be ruptured and her right ear drum had been torn. Dr. Kristensen and her staff did not tell me this had happened! I was making it worse by putting drops in her ears like they told me! My cat will probably have permanent hearing loss and possible nerve damage to her face and eye from this horrible experience.Take my advise, go somewhere else! Don't put your pet through this! We've been coming here every since we moved to San Jose. It's super close to our house downtown, and right off of the freeway. The front staff is super nice and knows our doggy by name and we see both Dr. Mihalek and Dr. Kristensen.We come pretty often because our pup is 10 years old, and went blind from cataracts that were a result of his diabetes.We didn't know what was wrong, just that he was drinking lots of water. The staff at Story Road was able to determine that Reify had diabetes, got his sugar down with prescription dog food and insulin, and referred us to a Ophthalmologist who removed Reify's cataracts so he can see again :) :) :) We have three kitties too, and only one has needed treatment, but they took care of him as well. Thank you Dr Sarah Mihalek, DVM for knowing your cysts!!! We were so scared to put our 6 year old English Bulldog in surgery that we secretly sought three other vet options/opinions. We picked her because she has a lot of surgery experience (knowledgeable/articulate), she assured us she would be using minimal drugs to induce and the her death rate was less than 2%!She told us she would use minimal medication - and that she had done this several times.  Her confidence in knowing what she was looking at ultimately convinced us that she was the right one for the job  along with ensuring us that she would be using the least amount of drugs.Thank you to your staff who assisted in everything! Both cats have health issues and Dr. Kari listened to all of our concerns and really helped us understand what G is going through. I have used this animal hospital since the 1980's and I have never been disappointed. The current vets are kind to the animals and show the owners a genuine concern for their pet. One of my felines is not one to be held and the Dr. was able to remove her from her carrier and examine her without incident. The cost for vet services is affordable compared with other hospitals. Coop was a gift as a pup to my granddaughter. He filled her heart with joy at her age of 8 when she came home from grade school, looked on with sadness when she went away to college and smiled the smile of an old dog when she came home after college. After many years of faithful loving of her family it came time to allow him an exit with dignity, a way out of his pain and all of the tribulations of a dog who has given all that he could give. We waited outside the vets office to open and he laid his head on my shoulder warmed by the rays of the morning sun for the last time. For the happiness that he brought her I can never repay. The final act that I can perform is allow him to part this world in my arms.Read Less

On new years eve my little chihuahua/jack mix, Bentley got hit by a car. He got up and barked/howled at the car and then refused to walk on his left leg. I did some at home you tube tests to see if his leg was broken. He failed all of the tests so I decided I had to bring him in. We arrived right before opening and were the 1st of 5 pets to come in the doors right when they opened. Esmerelda had me fill out paperwork and showed me right into the room, about 5 minutes later the dr introduced herself to me. Sarah I believe. And did an examination and told me all about things i could have over looked while paying attention to his leg, while checking and saying hes passing all those tests. She said she will have to take him to x-ray his leg, and she took him back. I told her I am hard pressed for money and she said not to worry and told me the price right then and it sounded fair to me even if it was just peace of mind.And about 10 minutes later she let me out of the exam room and said his x-rays were almost done. And about 3 more minutes I had Bentley back in my arms and she said his x-ray was clean and there was nothing to worry about just soft tissue damage.She said she can get him pain meds but other than that just resting and he should be good again. Check out was smooth and totally affordable. I applaud this  place for not trying to rip people off when they are in a panicked state about their pets. And being smooth and efficient. I was in, examed, x-rayed, paid up, and gone in 38 minutes total. Thats insane!I have 2 more dogs and 2 cats in my family, and they are coming here from now on. Read Less

Very professional and kind staff and quick to get seen by the veterinarian. The pricing was very reasonable to help my dog with kennel cough ($55 out the door, including Rx) and I will more than likely return for annual visits. I recommend them to anyone! Read Less
