I've just started taking my two dogs to San Juan Animal Hospital after moving to the area. My older dog had gotten quite a few sores on his back/body and we needed to get him into a vet on the weekend. We called a few places in the area, and could not find a vet willing to take in a new patient on a weekend without an appointment. When we called San Juan Animal Hospital, Kelsea who was on duty immediately made arrangements for our dog to get squeezed in at the last minute. Once we arrived they got us back to see the Dr. very quickly, and my dog received excellent treatment, and they even gave us a 10% new patient discount. I highly recommend San Juan Animal Hospital! It pains me to write average (or worse) reviews. I try to be reasonable whenever I write something like this because I want to help people have a better experience by knowing what to expect. I'd also like to think that I can help the business in figuring out how they could make things better for their clientele if I write a review that may have some information they can use.In this case, I really wanted to like this place. As you can see, I've taken my dog here from when she was only 2 months old and now she is 1.5 years old. This place is spacious and as far as I can tell, clean. The parking lot in the front always has space. Wait time is very minimal. They always call to let you know about lab results or if your prescription is ready for pick up. They had a little bit of trouble making things happen for my pet insurance, but it was a minor hiccup. I've tried emailing them before about getting stuff for my insurance and I haven't received a response. Maybe email is just not their thing yet.Dr. Bondurant has very good "bedside manner" and takes his time to give advice and explain. Without me asking, he told me a few pointers on how to take care of a new puppy. I appreciated it and thought it's something a great veterinarian would do. Since then, I've been trying to really like this place. But for the wellness exam, multiple fecal tests, deworming, multiple visits, and vaccinations, we were out by a good amount of money and it maxed out our pet insurance benefit in the first year we had our dog. I have a tiny panic attack every time they tell me how much we owe for just one visit. It's very, very, very expensive for me as I'm fairly young, newly married, and still in college. I started shopping around for prices and I learned we paid almost 3 times as much for the same services somewhere else. I found a much, much cheaper place for vaccinations, deworming, and other routine healthcare stuff -- and I'm kicking myself for not finding it sooner. I could have saved us hundreds.I'm going to say this now, my rating is mostly due to how much this place costs. For some people, that may not be a factor at all. But to some people, it's a deciding factor.When it came to spaying my pup, I considered Dr. Bondurant because I was really worried that something could go wrong if I went somewhere cheaper. But I did my research and found a good vet nearby. No issues whatsoever and my dog was pretty much back to normal the next night after the procedure. The other vet charged less for spaying and we really had no issues at all. The same vet we went for spaying also figured out how to fix my dog's allergies and stomach issues within our first visit with her. Also, the low cost vaccination clinics are totally worth it for the routine vaccinations. We saved a lot of money going to them this year. The low cost clinics also do wellness exams for free with the purchase of a vaccination and their vets and staff are always so helpful and friendly.I just went to the San Juan Animal Hospital today with my dog. I wanted my dog to have a wellness exam before we take her on a plane with us. And it's just all too expensive all the time so I think it'll be our last visit probably. I think their quality of service is good and sometimes great. But when it really comes down to it, my dog can get the same treatment and good service at a much afforadable vet. I really tried to like this place, but I just can't afford $300+ for each visit. I hope they figure something out if they want to keep more clients. But I think they'll be fine if they don't change anything, there seems to be enough people going here to keep it afloat. It is OC afterall.Sue and the rest of the staff are always nice and friendly. Dr. B purchased the business from Dr. Mannix and it's is so remarkable that their level of service is strikingly similar. I adored Dr. Mannix but Dr. B is hard not to adore as well. The office crew is amazing,,,kind, parent, works hard to accommodate me. The doctor is on time and easy to work with. He is patient with my questions and awesome with my dog. Dr B was great and very passionate about my dog, even called me after his procedure to check on him. he also wrote a handwritten letter to us thanking us for  using his practice. the unfortunate part is / was I was charged $900  for  a 10 min procedure to remove a sticker from my dogs nose. I showed another vet my bill and he said he would have charged $300 tops for the same thing.very nice man but way too expensive to see. don't want to pay his bear brand mortgage.  get a grip   we all don't have a oc $ Read Less

I received good care for my 2 cats (ages 13 and 14) for wellness check-ups and dental cleaning under anesthesia.  However, when one of my cats became acutely ill and was very close to death, the care was very poor.  This all happened just before Labor Day weekend.  After switching to a different vet the next week and going through a lot of care for my cat, I wrote a letter to Dr. Bondurant detailing many of my complaints.  The main one was that the vet assistant taught me how to give Rose (my cat) medication using a piller.  She demonstrated the technique.  Later on that weekend, while researching Rose's condition on the internet, I found out that "dry-pilling" any animal is at best very uncomfortable and at worst can cause serious damage to the lining of the esophagus. I sent a research article from 2001 to Dr. Bondurant and a piller that allows you to deliver water with the medication.  This piller is readily available on the internet for under $2.00. I asked Dr. Bondurant to post something on his website about the danger of dry-pilling and gave him several weeks to do so but he has not. He has not contacted me in any way about any of the complaints I raised in my letter, including giving Rose Convenia. This is a long-acting antibiotic injection given for skin infections.  One of its side effects is anemia.  Rose never had a skin infection (in fact, she never had any kind of an infection), BUT she did develop anemia after being injected with Convenia.  She is still anemic but improving slowly.  Convenia takes over 2 months to completely clear an animal's system.  In conclusion, I think it is easy to give good routine care, wellness checks, boarding service, vaccinations, dental cleanings, etc.  The real test of a veterinarian and his or her skill and caring, and the skill and caring of the team they have assembled and trained, comes when an animal is ill and the diagnosis is not readily apparent.  The animal and the owner are at the mercy of the vet.  If I had not gone on the internet that weekend and gotten the idea to thin Rose's food and feed her through a syringe, she would have died that weekend. All the experts at San Juan Animal Hospital knew that Rose wasn't eating but no one suggested using a syringe to feed her. Read Less

UPDATE: I'm increasing my rating to 3 stars because they called me and offered to refund me $49 for the second office visit which they admit shouldn't have been charged.  The reason I'm keeping it at 3 stars though is because I feel their procedure costs are above average (almost twice as much as the vet I ended up using for Dental work/minor surgery)ORIGINAL REVIEW:  I'll try and keep this short.  I just moved to the San Juan Capistrano area and had to take my dog in because of an abscess.  After a relatively short exam, they recommended a whole laundry list of things totaling over $1,200.  After going home and thinking about it, I decided to at least get started on an antibiotic so I returned to their office only to be charged around $160 for the prescription and another "exam" they supposedly performed..  Getting a bad feeling about them, I took my dog to two other places to get opinions.  Ultimately, San Juan Animal Hospital was the most expensive (comparing line item to line item), AND they were recommending a longer list of procedures right out of the gate. We have been going to San Juan Animal Hospial for over 25 years now.  We were so upset when Dr. Mannix passed, he was a wonderful, compassionate vet and we will always miss him.  Dr Bondurant has taken over the hospital and I am happy to say he has been giving us the same level of care. He and Sue and the staff are always friendly, accommodating, and on top of the situation. They also do boarding and have a dog run and outside play yard. When we moved to San Juan last year, I was having angst about where to take my 2 cats for care. One of them gets quite carsick, so in the absence of any other advice about vets in the area I picked San Juan Animal Hospital since we live nearby. I have been very pleased with our interactions with Dr. Bondurant and his staff -- he is very down to earth and easy to talk to, and my kitties tolerate him poking them as well as they tolerate that behavior from anyone, so I guess they aren't complaining either. My only complaint is that the entry area is quite small, so keeping the kitties away from any inquisitive dogs who come in can be a bit of a dance. Other than that, two thumbs and eight paws up! Dr B has be the best vet our family has used.  We meet him when he opened his practice in Laguna Beach.  Our rescue golden retriever loves him .  Polo has had surgery to remove to benign tumors on his head and neck and I can't say enough about the treatment they gave him and me.  Dr Bondurant actually called me on a Saturday night which no other vet has done.  I keep my horses in San Juan Capistrano so we have also used that office.I have recommended Dr. B's practice to several friends and they are loving his practice, too.Deborah K Read Less

Really nice friendly staff but my dog needed a minor surgery and they tried to charge me $1600.00 I got a second opinion at another vet and they said the surgery should cost no more than $600.00 with all the same meds  I had the surgery done and the other vet and saved myself 1000.00 bucks nice people but total rip off! It is NEVER an easy decision to say goodbye to a furry family member and dear loved one. Last Monday, I sadly had to say goodbye to my dear 13 year old cat, Frankie. I had previously stopped by to ask about some advice, a month earlier, having never been to San Juan Animal Hospital before and needing a local vet, I thought I would check it out.  The staff couldn't have been nicer!!!  Sue and another girl (sorry, I didn't get her name) were amazingly knowledgeable, kind and sensitive, giving me lots of ideas and advice. I walked away feeling confident that I would be very satisfied switching to San Juan Animal Hospital as my new Vet!When I realized that it was time for my loving Frank to be put to sleep, I called and spoke with Sue to make the appointment.  She was so sympathetic, took the time to explain what was going to happen, made an appointment and was so incredibly sensitive and helpful when I arrived.  I was heartbroken ... it's never an easy decision... but the staff was excellent!  I would rate them an A++++++!!!!! The incredible Dr. Bondurant came in and carefully and very gently took the time to walk us through what was going to happen, didn't rush us, there was no pressure ... made us feel comfortable with our difficult decision (something that I truly was grateful for since you cannot help but feel guilty but know it was the right thing to do) anyway, without going through too much I was so incredibly grateful for everyone, taking the time, being incredibly sensitive, being patient and oh so very kind...They stayed with us, the dr. kept checking in and also giving us privacy, letting us know if we needed anything at all, please let them know.... I was so impressed with their care!!!When we finally left, I thanked them and Sue gave me a hug and it just confirmed that I have a new caring Vet clinic!!! I even received a very sweet card in the mail the next day and it was so beautifully written - that truly meant the world to me!Thank you so much to Dr. Bondurant and Sue, from the bottom of my heart, for being incredibly caring, sympathetic and extremely professional!!!  God bless you and thank you for easing my and Frankie's pain.I will recommend them to any and everyone I can!!! Terribly expensive. Ambushes you with lots of extra costs. I brought my dog in to be spayed and spent over $600! I called other vets to find the going price is always under $300. Definitely ask about the cost up front. I will never go back. Read Less
