Dr Ichord is an Awesome Veterinarian! This Clinic has the most reasonable rates I've ever found. I was referred by close friend. Office visits are only $38.00!!! A teeth cleaning is less than half of what my previous Vet charges. The care is excellent! The location leaves a bit to be desired, but they're getting permits to build a brand new Clinic. I was recommended here by several friends and I am so grateful to have found a new place to care for my Puggle! My dog was in need of serious care after being attacked by another dog and had a pretty bad puncture wound. WOW, I can't believe there are so many negative reviews.  This wasn't the case when we started going here 2-1/2 years ago.  I have to believe that people these days either hear what they want to hear, don't listen or are just rude and unhappy people.  For those that posted negative reviews based on the front desk, shame on you, yes, most certainly that is the first impression of a business, however, you then go on to say the Drs are great and yet you downgrade their business with one or two *s because of the front desk? That again sadly, hinders people from going to see amazing vets once they see a one or two star review and yet you liked the vets? HARSH!Our first visit was on the day our first granddaughter was born, sadly, we had to come home and then have our beloved 14 year old dog put down.  I called our vet in Vista who had been our vet for all of her 14 years, expensive but they seemed to genuinely care.  However, when I called them about having her put down, their price was unbelievable, I think it was $250-275 and this was after spending tons of money on her over the years, that's just downright sad and dis-respectful to an owner that is suffering with the decision to let their animal go.  It was at a very difficult time for us financially so we just couldn't pay that much.  I was certain, as was par for the course, that they were over-priced. That was when I had to look for another vet and discovered SMVC, what a true blessing!  Their charge was $115, they took her in right away and they were so very compassionate.  She was so out of it that she wasn't nervous as she usually would be so I didn't feel like a horrible owner taking her to a "stranger".  We have been with SMVC ever since and they are awesome.  The Drs are great, the prices are extremely reasonable and I have yet to be turned away from getting an appointment either the same day or the following. We have been to this place about five times, but after our last visit we will be looking for a new vetOur dog has a thyroid condition, and the staff was unclear about how to prepare for the blood draw, resulting in much wasted time. Initially, we moved here from another area and they continued our dog's standing medication dosage. When it came time to recheck her thyroid hormone levels, they did not seem to know what they were doing and compounded the problem with a very rude front office staff.At our dog's regular check up my wife was told that they couldn't test her thyroid because she had her pill within the last 4 hrs. My wife called and made an appointment to have the blood draw and was told that the dog couldn't have her pill within 4 hrs and was given a cutoff time. She drove all the way there, and was rudely told that they didn't have her appointment and that she'd never been to the office (she had been there three times). After being told that she had never been to the office the receptionist out of nowhere found some kind of notation that our dog was to come in for thyroid testing but kept insisting that we didn't have an appointment. She rudely asked when the dog last got her pills and when my wife told her she said the blood could not be drawn because the pill had to have been given between 4 and 6 hours before the draw. Which one is it?! This disturbing experience was also met with no apology or regret. The vet would not take my phone call, however left an unapologetic voicemail later on. This is only our experience, take it for what it's worth. They seem to get good reviews otherwise. I will say however that everyone in the waiting room was shocked they were witnessing. This place was recommended, but when I went I didn't feel welcome. Waited a long time for my appointments,  the lady's at the front desk kind of ignore you, and felt an overall negative vibe. My dog was terrified to be there, (more than usual vet visits) which was also not a good sign. Also felt that the vet didn't take my concerns too seriously and I felt like he was insinuating that my dog wasn't important because she's old and could die soon. Amazing Place My kitten was 7 Months Old and escaped from my house and got hit by a car. I had found him in my neighbors yard and took him straight to this vet (have been with them for so many years now) they said there was nothing they could do and I was devastated. They said that they would have to put him down and I asked if I can hold him while doing that and they said yes I was so happy to know how he pasted away and that he wasn't hurt by the injection. I held him when they gave the injection and they let me take him and get him cremated. Hands down best vet! All of this they told me they would do for free and I was balling thanking them I have a dog that is incontinent and they prescribed her with some medicine and now she hasn't peed on herself in months! After being very disappointed with a different veterinarians office in the area I chose to try this place out.....well I am a continuing customer for sure! I had tons of silly questions since we just got a new kitten and haven't cared for a kitten in many years. She answered all my question and calmed my concerns. Initially I went in to have my kittens 2nd set of shots done. They gave him an exam and said he's growing great. I was happy to hear that. He got his shot and the next morning he was acting very weird...he wouldn't walk on the leg he got the shot in, wouldn't eat, wouldn't let anyone touch him and wasn't making any noise (this cat never stops meowing!) I called and they got us in right away. As soon as I walked in they took him back, gave him fluids and checked him out and assured me he would be fine after the next day. Sure enough he was back to his normal meowing self a few hours later. I was so thankful for their care and compassion! I will be back for sure and will recommend to anyone! Thank you!Read Less

I cannot say enough positive remarks about Dr. Ichord. I have been taking my 3 pets to SM Vet Clinic for a few years. Dr. Ichord brought life and personality back to my German Shepard with the perfect medication after years of itching and misery. My little Schnauzer mix just had a massive bladder stone removed. The care and concern and constant communication with Dr. Ichord put me at ease. The day after surgery she was not eating or drinking. Dr. Ichord had me bring her in to help with her comfort and recovery by giving her fluids and more pain medication free of charge. His top concern is truly the health and well-being of his patients. What I also appreciate are the very reasonable rates and the lack of "pushing services" like so many other vets do. I'm so disappointed by my experience at this clinic. We began visiting the San Marcos Veterinary Clinic when we moved to the area in October. Minus the long wait times (even with an appointment), it wasn't until January when things went sour. We adopted a second dog, a puppy in December, and brought her into the clinic for a regular exam. We learned that within just a few days our puppy had lost half a pound. Dr. Campbell told me not to worry and to just give her more food. So we did but within a week she lost more than a pound. With our own research and the help of dog park friends, we realized she had tapeworm. When I called the clinic to inform them of our discovery, we were brushed off and told it wasn't a big deal because tapeworms are so common. But, if it's so common why wouldn't they bring this up as a possibility? Later, Dr. Campbell apologized leading me to stay with the clinic. Finally, we asked for a prescription to treat her tapeworm. We were told it would be filled in 48 hours but we did not receive a callback. That same day, I shared my experience on Yelp (like all people in today's world, of course!). Five days later, my husband called to check on the prescription and Dr. Ichord told him he did not feel obligated to fill the prescription because of my bad Yelp review. So, even though we are PAYING customers and patients, Dr. Ichord did not feel obligated to give our dog the medicine she needed. His response shows the clinic completely lacks any sort of ethics and only cares about making money than truly caring for their patients. I am sorely disappointed and shocked by their complete discrimination against us and our dog.Read Less

Dr Ichord is an expert at diagnosing my cats' complicated health problems, he seems to genuinely love animals, and he is so reasonably priced. I drive an hour to get here, because this is the only veterinarian I trust with my animals. The only time I go to any other vet is when one of my cats have an after hours emergency. We had a very sick little baby puppy that was overlooked twice at a different clinic. When we brought our puppy here, we were taken back right away and treated with respect and he was given the attention, love and care he needed. When we had to put him down 2 days later, they were warm and sincere. We know they did all they could, I wish we had seen them first. I don't know it would have made a difference but our puppy would not have suffered like he had. This vet is the best ever. A super guy. We would highly recommend him. He has taken great care of our dogs for almost the last three years. He was so supportive a few years again when we had to have one euthanized because he had a brain tumor and was in pain and was suffering. This vet is very feeling, cares about his animal patients and their owners. He is the kind of guy I feel good about leaving money with. He is very reasonable. My fiance took our dog hear for an ear infection...from what I was told, the vet was extremely professional and polite. He professionally cleaned Maples ear and gave us antibiotics to use. We left only paying $95, but the best part is that Maples ear got better within a day after seeing the vet (and her infection was pretty bad to start with). We will be coming here again if need be. Both Dr. Ichord and Dr. Campbell have gone out of their way to make the dogs - and me- feel comfortable and relaxed during each visit.
