I took my dog here to be seen for the first time last fall and it was a wonderful experience! The vet was extremely kind and very knowledgeable and knew what she was doing and advising. I consider myself to be a well informed pet owner and she took the time to ask me a lot about my dog, about his habits and what my thoughts were. I really appreciated her treating both of us with respect and empathy. The staff was also very kind, and I never felt we were just a number or unwanted. We were treated as a valuable patient. The clinic was very clean, we got in within minutes, and the prices were competitive. They called to check on my dog a few times after the appointment, and followed up even months later to tell us our flea medication was due. I would give this place 5 stars for friendly staff and cleanliness as well.I will also say I didn't have to wait when I went in with an appointment.Here's the downside:-prices are exorbitant even compared to other Santa Barbara veterinarians -they charge quite a bit for a 10 min consultation that I did not need. I specifically requested NOT to have the consultation again (as I had paid for it twice before and it was unnecessary those times as well) THEY IGNORED ME AND CHARGED ME ANYWAY.-they advised us to purchase unnecessary services and products giving the impression that we would be bad pet owners if we did not. To me this was a big deal. I didn't appreciate being manipulated, having my request disregarded, and being forced to pay for "services" I did not want/need so I will not be back.The rest of the staff there was lovely and interacted very well with my pets; the rooms were clean and they keep treats in the waiting room. My beloved pet was recently mauled by another dog and La Cumbre Animal Hospital got word of our 1am visit to the 24-hour emergency pet clinic where Chloe was put to sleep.  Within days, we received a condolence letter that 18 staff members signed.  Yes, 18 of them took the time to write a note on the card.  Who does this sort of thoughtful and compassionate gesture anymore?  La Cumbre Animal Hospital does!  It was beyond touching and so sweet.  Although La Cumbre Animal Hospital is on the more expensive side, they are an example of getting what you pay for...quality animal care, coupled with staff that genuinely care about you and your pets.  Thank you so much! Just got a letter in the mail that La Cumbre Animal Hospital no longer wants to provide services to my dogs which actually surprises me how terribly they handle complaints. After spending thousands!!! at LCAH I complained about terrible service to the front desk and slow service which caused them to make this decision. I understand anyone has the right to deny service but its really sad that a place that is supposed to care about animals health and safety would do this instead of adressing their issues and dealing with them to satisfy a customer. This place is extremely overpriced and not worth the customer service you receive they dont care about your animals health. In reality all they are after is whats in your pockets!!! I would pay anything to see my dogs healthy so I did but deff not worth it. If you dont have the money they dont feel bad they simply just dont offer you their service which is sad. Dont waste your money going somewhere where they dont care about your animals health in reality!! Waste of money, terrible staff!!! Sad world we live in...Read Less

I recently adopted a rescue Maltese, a sweet little 6# male dog.  Very gentle. Very easy to handle.  I wanted him to have a check-up and get established at a local clinic.  Well, this vet was not able to handle my dog well.  She ended up putting a muzzle on him while examining him.  the dog was very agitated during the procedure.  I had a lot of questions as this is our first dog in a long time and our first Maltese, but I didn't get a lot of useful replies.We decided to try another clinic and went to Lompoc because prices are so much cheaper there.  Well we had a much better experience.  The vet there had no trouble handling our little guy.  Certainly didn't need to put a muzzle on him!  Even was able to pull a tooth that was dangling by a thread without upsetting the dog.  So it's worth the drive to Lompoc and we won't go back to La Cumbre again, even though its 5 minutes from our home. Good service and nice staff. But don't trust what the tell you with a price. Seems a bit of bait and add. Has happened on three occasions with them. Update on my poor cattle dog.. Her previous regular vet, Dr. Holmes at La Cumbre Animal Hospital took xrays two months ago of my dogs legs and back and declared that the dog was free of cancer and arthritis. Since then the little dog has had numerous episodes of trembling in pain and confusion and several trips back to VCA on Haley St to try to diagnose her underlying issue. Again, her regular vet took xrays and declared her free from cancer and arthritis. Since then we have had a confirmed diagnoses of arthritis in her back and an aggressive tumor around her right femur. I am aghast that any vet would be A) so cruel and callous as to knowingly misinform the pet parents of an animals condition, or B) be so incompetent to allow a continued growth of an aggressive tumor. We were told only yesterday that there was a radiologists report from two months ago that identified a probability of a tumor. We were told this by a different vet who obtained the records from Dr. Holmes at LCAH. Dr. Holmes at LCAH KNEW!!! The report also recommended that the litte dog be xrayed again two weeks after the initial xray to track the progress of the mysterious growth. WE WERE NEVER TOLD THIS UNTIL YESTERDAY!!!. We were told that there was no cancer and no arthritis. We were deliberately or by incompetence misinformed as to the dogs condition and now today, we have had a bone biopsy performed and we have a poor prognosis. God Damn you Holmes, and God Damn you LCAH. We could have done something, but your cruelty or incompetence has now limited our choices. Read Less

I have a unique perspective on LCAH because I used to work here!  I LOVED it, both as an employee and as someone who took their pet here.  The staff is SO nice and all genuinely love the animals.  I know it's not the least expensive place to go in town, but it's worth it.  You get what you pay for - quality pet care in a professional, clean environment.  The owners are always thinking of new ways to improve their hospital, and are very passionate about having the best animal hospital possible with highly trained staff. There are also things you don't get to see as a pet owner.  For instance, although I worked up front, on my breaks or at lunch, I often visited the pups in the back who were boarding or recovering from/waiting for procedures.  I saw all the staff do this on a regular basis.  Once, I walked past one of the larger runs and saw one of my coworkers (who was at lunch) sitting on the floor of the run, reading a book, while one of the patients napped with his head on her lap.  We all loved the pets we took care of, often got to know them really well, and treated them like we would our own.Dr. Kuesis took care of my pup, so I had the most experience witnessing her veterinary care, and she was always fantastic.  Very polite to everyone, takes the time to listen to your concerns, just generally a super nice person  (all things I heard from her clients, as well).Wish I hadn't had to move away from SB and leave this place.  Have yet to find a permanent vet for my pups, as my standards are pretty high after coming from LCAH :) Read Less

La Cumbre Animal Hospital has gained my complete trust when it comes to diagnosing and solving health problems for my 5 yr old Chihuahua mix. They are always kind to Stewie, polite towards me and knowledge. Dr. Kuesis is very practical in recommending first steps and considers the $ aspect as well as the risk to my pet in available solutions. His health problems have ranged from a surgery he needed on his leg to diagnosing a vomiting problem early mornings that was not letting me sleep. While Stewie will always panic when he is taken to any vet, I am at ease knowing that they won't subject him to unnecessary tests or procedures, and I believe they have his best interest in mind. After being unhappy with the price and quality of care over at Noahs Ark I took my 11mo frenchie to La Cumbre this morning after he was "sick" all night long. The facilities were clean and nice looking, and the staff at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. They didn't have an appointment until later in the day but offered a drop off service so he could start receiving treatment. Dr. Mckenna was very friendly and thorough in answering all of my questions. I feel comfortable leaving him in their care. My only complaint was they told me they couldn't find the tick I asked them to remove. (he picked one up yesterday evening) He was with them for 2 hours, and only in the room for about 2 minutes with me before I saw the tick and pointed it out. I got the feeling tick removal was more the responsiblity of the vet techs rather than the Dr. At checkout they did not try and push anything on me like Noahs Ark did. They asked if I wanted an entire case of the bland food he has to take and I told them to just give me a few cans, that was no problem. The total for the exam, 3 cans of food, and week of probiotics was $122. Not cheap but not nearly as much as Noahs ark would have charged. tick removal and some medication on a rashy area were all included in the exam cost.  I definitely plan to go back. Read Less

This place is nice~however it is almost double the price of any other vet in SB. Have very very deep pockets if you want to go here. They charged me $30 to clip my dogs nails and other prices are almost twice as much as other vets! I now go to San Roque Pet Hospital and they are very friendly and very reasonable! Read Less

I really only have good things to say about La Cumbre Animal Hospital. They care for my cat Guillermo and have seen us through some rough times. Earlier this year Guillermo had what appears to be a stroke. They took him in quickly in an emergency situation and didn't make us wait at all. I was given updates on him throughout the experience and felt really comfortable leaving him in their care. Aftercare follow up was just as good, the medications he needed were called in right away and available quickly. Months later, we're still in contact and they monitor his condition. Any time you enter the lobby you're not only greeted--but recognized! This may seem like a small thing, but when you're entrusting the care of someone you love to another, it's nice to know they know him! I have been taking my dogs to LCAH for years now and have only been happy with the outcome. They are so very caring with all the animals that come in. All the doctors really take their time with you to explain what exactly is going on and what your options are. My doctor even gave me her home number when my dog was very sick and eventually died! That does not normally happen. Usually your doctor is only available during business hours. She went out of her way to care for my dog and help me cope with the situation. Read Less
