I was disappointed with the service at this location. My dog of 13 years was gravely ill and I unfortunately had to make the heartbreaking decision to put her down. When I took her in, the front desk lady who was working there was extremely cold. There was absolutely no empathy or compassion towards my family nor our beloved pet. The vet tech was also disconnected. She was a bit more helpful at offering some helpful advice, however there was zero compassion. I feel strongly that if you are working in a field that deals with loss, one should be able to show caring compassion, a caring demeanor, kind words, and empathy. Although I will not let this interfere with my grief, it is unfortunate that this was our experience. Read Less

The BEST VET IN THE VALLEY PERIOD. Our young dog was hit by a car. It was after hours, we rushed him to the 24 hr. Emergency Vet. We took the x-rays to another vet for a 2nd opinion, neither offered us any hope. Then a friend told us about Dr. H. at South County Vet. Dr. H. looked at the x-rays, formed a plan and said bring in Your dog. Dr. H did surgery and rebuilt his leg and his pelvis. Our dog lived another 15 years and was able to run and enjoy life just like before. You'd think that would've cost us a king's ransom, but it was less than the initial visit to the "Emergency Vet." I cannot say enough wonderful things...such wisdom, knowledge and a true caring heart for people and their pets. Read Less

My dog had bladder stones and I took her to my regular vet on cedar and they were trying to charge me between 1800-2400 for surgery! So I tell them I cant afford it, because I cant, and remembered my friend telling me about the vet in selma so I take her there for surgery and they charge me 628 for surgery, meds, and her staying two days. They told me my dog needed to stay on a diet with prescribed dog food came out to 47 dollars for two weeks worth of food and I need to take her back so she can get her stitches off but I am so pleased with this place. I read reviews just to see what people said before coming here and first of all the so called stench that is unbearable or whatever that reviewer said is exaggerating or they have an extremely sensitive nose but the place does not smell that bad I walked in and hardly even noticed the smell but anyway people there are nice and helpful they are kind and I am definitely taking my dog here from now on its cheap they dont charge you for unnecessary anything, and they do an exceptional job. For those with bad experiences its the same with doctors they cant save everyone so if your dog dies under their care chances are your dog wouldve died under any vets care and theres probably nothing anyone could’ve done so dont blame them for your pet dying it happens. Also this place isnt an emergency pet hospital or open 24hrs, the phones dont turn on until 9am so dont get all upset because they don’t answer be responsible as a pet owner and have the number of at least 2 or 3 different pet hospitals in case of emergency thats what I do dont rely on just one place especially one that isnt open 24hrs. I took my Cat here yesterday for congestion and balance issues. Dr. H didn't do a full exam, didn't listen to her lungs, or look in her ears at all. I found a growth behind her ear while I was there and he argued with me that it wasn't there, then my husband felt it last night, and the vet I took her to today for a second opinion felt it. She also looked deeper into her ear and found tissue which could be just swelling from inflammation or cancer, which is what she thinks it is. This vet also noticed she's not blinking her left eye which means the growth is putting pressure on the nerves behind her ear. Dr. H just looked at the surface and didn't see an infection, but didn't use any tools to see deeper in like the one today. I'm not a vet, just a long time pet parent, and I knew it was something in the ear because of the balance and congestion. This is just negligence. I'm suspicious he felt it and just didn't want to deal with it, or just wasn't even trying. Makes me wonder how many pets die and suffer from his negligence when potentially serious illnesses are missed and go untreated. Read Less

This will be a difficult review to write and keep unbiased, but it's true and should be taken to mind. This vet is fine for simple procedures and shots. In fact, they're probably the best around because of low costs. DO NOT have even THE SIMPLEST surgery or anything requiring an anesthetic of any kind though if you care about your pet's life. Spend the extra money and go somewhere else.Today, my dog went in to correct what Dr. Hatayama explained was basically a dog version of cauliflower ear (the thing boxers typically get from ruptured blood vessels in the ear) and we figured while he was put down for surgery, to finally get him neutered as well. We were told this would be fine- they made no objections or any indications of any kind that this would be a difficult procedure for them in the slightest. We brought our pet in early Saturday morning and were told to pick him up on Monday, since they would be closed on Sunday. While we were eating breakfast about a mile away, we received a phone call from the veterinary office saying the surgery was done sooner than expected, and that we could pick our pet up right away. We went right over after eating, and as soon as we got there we were told by the receptionist that there was a problem. We were not allowed to see our pet and we had to sit in the waiting room and wait for about 20 minutes or so without being told anything. What raised an eyebrow with me was that the receptionist made an off-hand comment on my dog being so large- 180 lbs. My dog was just weighed that day to be 108 lbs., so she was clearly mistaken or a little dyslexic. Β I noticed she went through some paperwork and looked for a long time after I corrected her about the weight- that raised a red flag for me. When they were finally ready to see us, we were told that he had died after the surgery due to an enlarged heart. They didn't mention any kind of complications with medications or anesthetics that they gave the animal, no complications with procedure, and took NO RESPONSIBILITY WHATSOEVER. All they said was "well, after we took some x-rays (posthumously) we saw that he had an enlarged heart and he could have died at any time." The dog was brought in healthy without any immediately life-threatening conditions, to undergo routine surgery, they killed him, and no responsibility was taken nor apologies given. The doctor (who was there minutes ago to receive us and presumably perform the surgery) was no longer there to deliver the bad news or offer any kind of rational explanation. He either fled the scene, or left my dog's life in the hands of his team of butchers. I admittedly lost my shit and flew off the handle, refusing to pay for the surgery or any of the medication which I returned to them nor listen to any of their nonsensical bullshit about him coincidentally dying of an enlarged heart at that very moment that they repeated ad nauseam. Why did they rush the procedure? He was originally slated to come home Monday, but they decided to plow through it in under half an hour and called us back to pick him minutes after leaving. Why didn't they let us see him as soon as we came back for him? So they could come up with a cover story? Why was the doctor not available to comment on this epic failure? All we got over and over was "enlarged heart... he could have gone at any time..." on repeat by vet techs not qualified enough to formulate a rational answer. My theory on what happened? They gave my dog too much anesthetic and killed him. They mistakenly said he weighed 180 lbs. (instead of 108) in casual conversation- I'm willing to bet they thought that's how much he weighed and drugged him accordingly. So to recap- go for the cheap shit if you must. DO NOT put your pets' lives in their hands if you care about them. Their incompetence and irresponsibility claimed my 5 year old, formerly extremely active and healthy German Shepherd's life well before it was due. I'll update this review with any new, relevant information I get back from them. Read Less

I am conflicted in writing this review. It's true what others have said: long phone lines (I clocked mine at 20 minutes), long wait times to be seen, and a dirty, smelly atmosphere. In their defense, they do need more staff, which is why the admin girl can barely get to any phone calls- she's dealing with all of the customers and patients by herself! They also offer a $40 office visit.I came in because my cat was acting quite lethargic and lost lots of weight. When we saw Dr. H, we told him about her previous bout with bronchitis and her lifelong asthma. We spent about 25 minutes inside the room with him, and I'd say 7 full minutes were spent actually talking about my cat. He is a nice guy, don't get me wrong, but he went on a tangent beginning around the topic of wild animals (which I thought might have been relevant) and finishing at the election. I tried to steer the conversation back to my babygirl without being rude. He said she seems okay, that cats sometimes lose weight and get sleepy from asthma medication, and to change her medication schedule. I left with a $40 office fee, renewed hope, and a fuller wallet, thinking I beat the system and finally found an affordable vet. 2 weeks later, Pip was a lot worse, and we ended up choosing another vet in Fresno. Blood tests, x-rays, and $575 later, we found out she had a tumor growing on her spine, amongst other things. In hindsight, I take the blame because I didn't request these tests to Dr. H. He is probably used to lower income patients, and tries to keep the options affordable. But at what cost? TL;DR Dr. H is a nice guy, provides affordable options, and doesn't try to gimmick you into purchasing any unnecessary medical treatments. On the other side, do your research on what the problem might be before coming in, and REQUEST to have specific tests/procedures (blood work, x-rays) done. Read Less

THE best veterinary hospital that I've been to. I went in as a walk in with my dog and they took care of us. The wait was probably long but it didn't feel long at all. And plus it's understandable for walk ins. We were called in pretty fast. But I feel that the wait time here for walk ins were probably the same at most vet clinics that I've been to even with an appointment made. I was really expecting to wait 2 hours and be called. But as soon as my dog and I arrived, we signed in and within 10-15 minutes we were checked in. And probably another 15 min later we were called into the rooms. The longest wait was probably the lab result. I live approx 20 minutes away so the drive was all worth it. The vet techs and staff in front were great. They really take the time to explain things to you. I love how I can ask them questions and not feel rush although I feel bad because they're pretty busy. While I waited for my dog's lab result, one of the vet tech made sure they didn't forget about me. Overall I thought the staff had a pretty solid knowledge and background in what they do... I heard about this place through a friend a while back. And then more people start talking about how great it is. I called to get a quote for the services my dog needs and was completely shock when the gal on the phone told me the price. Other clinics wants to charge me 2-3x for the services. I decided to give them a try. The experience went so smooth. Dr. H is straight forward and caring. He isn't like other Vets where they push you to do this and that and rip your pockets or bank account into pieces. He'll give you his thoughts and then you decide how to approach and go from there. I can tell this man love what he does and is serving his purpose in life righteously. This will be dogs' vet now! Anyways one of the vet tech, I believe her name was Ashley, called to follow up on my dog. I thought that was very kind since it is pretty hectic in the office with phone calls, animals and patients. I did not plan on having a pet, and had not budgeted for one, and yet I have not had a problem paying for all of the vaccinations, boosters, checkups, and medicine (for an upper respitory infection). I actually drive half an hour to take my little guy here; sure there are places closer to my house, but my friend has been taking his family pets here for many years and said it was the place to go. Like I said, I found the kitten in the street and he wasn't weaned yet and still needed to be stimulated to use the restroom (tmi) and I had no idea how to care for such a small animal, but the staff was very helpful and answered all of my questions. As for the smell others spoke of? I honestly don't have any complaints. There are lots of animals in the waiting room, so it's going to smell like animals. It's not filthy in the office. I see myself coming here for many years in the future. Read Less

In 2014, I went to a well-known veterinary hospital in town as my dog had stones and he was sick. Β They told me...pay $3000 for the surgery or put the dog to sleep. Β We didn't have the money at the time and we were stressed. Β We had to make a decision within an hour and I remember traveling far to South County Veterinary Hospital years ago and they have been great but since it was farther away from where I live, I figured I would go local. Β But I wanted a second opinion and I was willing to travel an hour.. Β So, I called and they said, "don't put your dog to sleep, bring it here". Β My x-rays were sent to SCVH and they accommodated my time of traveling to their hospital as they were closing.I traveled to Selma, brought my dog in to get the surgery done and left him overnight to make sure he was fine and eating and for $120 including medicine, my dog survived. Β  Β Dr. H didn't understand why the veterinary hospital couldn't do the simple procedure and why they charged so much. Β But I made my decision that no matter the distance, all my pets will be going to SCVH.I've been to several vets and while prices fluctuate, their prices are quite high to what I get from SCVH. Β When it comes to compassion for owners of animals and when it comes to helping people, South County Veterinary Hospital has been there for all my dogs from the past and present. Β I am grateful to Dr. H and the staff and I don't care if the distance is a bit far from me, I will travel that far for customer service, price and simply this veterinary hospital is the best! Worse customer service ever. If you call the office it takes forever to get someone on the phone and when you finally do, they put you on hold for another 5-10minutes. The people up front are a bit rude which is a huge turn off. The facility smells awful, staff pays little attention to their patients, and I feel like all they want is my money but really don't care for the well being of the animal. Vet comes in, looks at your dog, vet tech after and administers the treatment without discussing the problem/treatment/preventive care with the owner first. Very unprofessional. This would have to be my longest review I've ever done...But man oh man... WORST VET EVER!!!I usually tend to be nice and try to give places a chance.... But I had a horrible, and I mean HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE here. I had to come here after a horrific even where a dog attacked my kitten, being she was 2 months old or so. Since I moved to the south of Fresno in a ranch, and being money tight at the moment, this was the closest plus I heard the cheapest, (you get what you paid for! Remember that!) vet near me. When I got the number, heh.... It took so so so soooooo many tries just to get through the line! My god! After calling for the 50th time, the lady told me I can come in, so I rushed over there as soon as I could. Upon arriving to Selma, I parked, and was immediately confused by the sign up front that said closed, although they had a sign that said "open" weird, anyways I walked in, and the reek of wet, dirty, dog over whelmed me, now Ive been to numerous vets, many many many times (I had a dog with a heart problem and had to go to a vet at least once a week) I never been to a vet that smelled this horrible. I approached the receptionist lady, by the name if Georgia, who was on the phone. I was literally waiting right in front of her.. For a good 15 min... And judging by the context of the conversation, she wasnt on the phone with a customer or patient, no but with a friend, she was on her cellphone! -.- and all the calls ringing towards the hospital? They were all going on hold while she finished her chit chat. That seriously ticked me off. I finally signed in, got called, and the doctor seem pretty nice, but in that waiting room I again couldn't stop thinking about that foul odor. Any way, they had told me that my cat Harley had to stay the night to see if she would survive the night.. and someone would call me in the morning.. So I left saddened.I got a call the next day, from a technician by the name of Sarah, saying that they needed my approval to go ahead and further her x rays and to discuss the price range. I called back as soon as i got out of class and of courseeee, no answer. I kept calling and calling and nothing. Called the next day (Saturday) and no answer, and they aren't open on Sundays. Called them on Monday, and they said that she was ready to go home and I can pick her up. I was confused on this because they had called to give my 'OK' and to discuss the estimate. Which they were gonna charge me for when i never approved! As I told them that Sabrina left a voicemail about this and told them they never told me an estimate and that i would like to speak to sarah, they had said that she doesn't work there anymore. Yeah, Right! Ugh!And that is not even the worse part!!!! I'm telling you, THIS IS THE WORST VET EVER! I seen that my cats splint was just pure straight, and i found it odd. but i thought that they should know more than me since they're supposed to be "professionals" but after a week it was really bothering her so i took off her cast and they made her leg aall straight that her bone was popping out!I took her the next day and since i had taken off the cast, they didnt believe me that they had done that mistake. PFFF! And i still had to pay to get her to another cast, which this splint/cast was wrapped at angle this time -.- I'm trying to get this review shorter cause trust me, its a lot of horrible experiences. I had to come back withing 2 weeks to get the splint changed as I drove alllll the way to selma again, at 11:30 am, I was overwhelmed again by the horrid stench of dirtiness and wet dog, and again, i know its a vet but it was honestly such a horrific stench. And I was told by some technician that they were closed in suchhhh a rude snotty way, While she was chatting with one of her friends inside.I have never left a place or any business so mad and so astonish. NEVER EVER GOING THERE AGAIN! Remember people. you get what you paid for. Do not go here. Abby Pet or McKinley Vet is MUCH MUCH better. And on a side note, i took my kitty to a different vet, and know shes running and doing fine on her leg. phew, sorry for the long review. Read Less

I visited her daily and the staff was so understanding and very nice. I received a call from their office and they said well she is all better you can come and pick her up she woke up this morning and took her ivy out and is now playing and running around. I went to pick her up and I had to pay a down payment of $100 to take her and then they worked with me on making payments for the rest. My total bill with Antibiotics and the 2 week stay with all the treatment was only $470 dollars. I was sooo supprised as other vets would have over $2,000. I agree with the last review. Dr Hatayama is the best Vet we've ever had. AND he's the cheapest. You can ask any vet at pet emergencys in fresno/clovis and they will agree and have a very high respect. He went to UC Davis which is the best vet school out there. He is truly down to earth and tells stories and gives advice as he works on your pet. He truly is gifted and it takes a lot of heart and skill to do what he does. He always has different office vet techs in there..some are nice and down to earth and others are crappy and don't last long..once they leave his place they usually just go to a different vet office in town..or open their own practice...they're everywhere. People will be people and in this economy i've been seeing more and more rudeness everywhere I go. You can't mop chemicals around sick animals. I've seen them spot cleaning between sick pets and I watch them disinfect the rooms between each pet and They dry the rooms out before bringing your pet in. I don't know why i'm defending that. I just don't appreciate people making false reports out of rage and jealousy. If you get told to never come back because you can't afford your bill you just don't go back...I don't know why anyone would attempt to take their pet to the vet if they couldn't afford the office visit and then have the nerve to think just because they finally paid it they could return... He has a 3 strike policy..so it sounds to me you've just taken advantage. He already works near free as it is and to get on your computer and slander someones name is just horrible... The back room with cages are full of sick pets near death with sores and parvo and healing with stiches... My dog I know smelled rotten. She had toxic shock syndrome and Dr. Hatayama was able to remove her uterus, save her life and cleanse her out... Even at home she smelled for months and had a 2% chance of living and she's still here! Alive! thanks to Dr Hatayma. He kept her for 6 days did xrays, bloodwork, gave her all her shots up to date, did the surgery, sent home antibiotics and vitamins.. all for $180 bucks. It's not a candy store. This is a office for pet visits but also pet emergencies and if you ever happen to go to this amazing little spot in Selma you'll see he's not only the cheapest and best vet he's also the busiest because he truly is the BEST Read Less

I'm just not sure what the two previous reviewers are talking about, but it is certainly not Dr. Hatayama or the level of his care. I wonder why the prior poster kept going back to Dr. Hatayama six times if she found it so bad. Our family, on the other hand, is head over heels for this amazing vet. We just brought our three dogs home from their second visit with Dr. Hatayama, and we couldn't be happier. He is just so kind to each of them and gives them wonderful top-notch care. Not to mention how inexpensive he is. Our total bill was a mere $80 for three dogs, flea and worm medicine and personalized tags, too. The last time I was in there, I paid another $40 towards the bill of a stray hit by a car Dr. Hatayama treated for free. I just felt that our $70 bill that time was just so, so low for all that was done for our dogs, but they wouldn't accept more, so they put the extra money towards the police department's account that also treats injured strays officers bring in. Dr. Hatayama is an old fashion country vet like you would see in Little House on the Prairie. You can tell in just one visit that he loves your pets, not the money. We couldn't be happier with him and tell everyone we know. Although, most of the people we know already go to Dr. Hatayama because they heard before we did or had a pet he saved when no one else could and were charged a fraction of what other vets would charge for the same treatment. On 6/30/11, I had an appointment with South County Veterinary Hospital to have a cherry-eye removed from my dog's eye. After having a few scheduling issues and needing to reschedule on three seperate occasions, the Vet's office informed me that the best time to show up was 8am on 6/30/11. Keep in mind that I live in Hanford, CA, which is roughly a thirty minute drive, and work, so I had to arrange to take time off of work in order to meet the desired Vet's time of surgery. After driving 30 minutes, and waiting in the lobby for another 15 minutes, Georgia (one of the office managers I presume) asked me why they could not find my name in thier system. This was the first red flag, since I have been a regular customer for over two and a half years (I own 6 dogs, and all have been to this vet, so it wasn't as if I was a stranger). After instructing me to enter the back room, it appeared as if we were about to do my pet's weigh-in before they brought her to the back for surgery. Once we entered the back room, Georgia asked me for my name, and after giving her my first name, she informed me that I had to leave; moreover, she said the last time I was there they told me to not come back. This is a bald-faced lie, since the last time I was there, I paid another vet bill (in full like I always did) and they wished me well. At no point during the rescheduling process did they inform me to stay away. They allowed me to take half of my day to reject me in their office, which was full of customers mind you, they could not have done this in private or over the phone? After placing my dog in my truck, I went back inside to demand to speak with the doctor. His employees said he was busy in surgery, which was another lie, since I was the first name on the list that morning for a surgery (the hospital opened at 8am & at this point it's roughly 8:15). After telling the employees that this was not proper business, that I paid in full every single time after a pet visit and was never told to not come back. Otherwise I would not have wasted half of my day to be rejected in front of a waiting room full of people. After trying to voice my opinion for barely a few minutes, the vet's office called the Selma Police Deptarment without any type of warning. As I left the building in disgust and started my truck to leave, four Selma police cars encircled my truck and told me to exit the vehicle. After exiting and explaining to the group of cops questioning me, one officer went inside to get their story. They explained to the officer I was told to never come back, which of course is a lie, since I would not have wasted my time driving so far and rescheduling my work schedule for a ""gamble at the Vet's office."" I felt entirely disrespected, upset, and harrassed. As I have noted above, I have six dogs, so I was a frequent customer; the vet's office should not have been surprised. And when I rescheduled the surgery, they should have told me over the phone they had a problem with me (again, they kept to their lie that I was not in their system, when in fact I have been there close to a dozen times). And once I got there, they should have given me the time of day to at least allow me to speak with the doctor in charge of the hospital, since it was his call to not accept my business, to figure out what the problem is, and hopefully eradicate it. And finally, after embarrassing me in front of their customers as if I was a nuisance and not the regular whose money was always gladly accepted, they called the police as if I was a threat--all I wanted to know was why they told me to drive so far to turn me away at the door. Totally improper business no matter which way you look at it. My name was in their system. I was a repeated customer for years. They gladly accepted my money the last time I was at the hospital. Something needs to be done about this; this is not right or fair for someone who has supported that business for close to three ye Read Less

I have never been to such a dirty and unprofessional vet hospital before. The stench in that place is almost unbearable. I know that animal clinics smell but in my experience they have never smelled as bad as it does here. The women at the reception desk are unprofessional and very short (with the exception of one). The waiting room floor is very dirty and one of the receptionists is always snacking while she talks to pet owners. The vet is unkempt and doesn?t take the time to talk everything through with you (we had to ask him for more information repeatedly). The lady that took our puppy didn't give us time to say goodbye to our dog and just grabbed her and left. When we walked to the reception desk the lady that took our dog squeezed through the other ladies to reach the phone with our dog in her arms! Why no one else could answer the phone I do not know. The vet did not look like he did a thorough analysis of our dog before telling us she was going to have to stay the night. We called the next morning and we couldn't pick her up for another 3 days because it was the weekend and they never got to the minor stitching she needed! When we called they were very short and showed no compassion. I had to ask to talk to the vet when I picked my dog up so that he could tell me about her diet, healing time, and medicine. When we picked our dog up she was skinny like they hadn't fed her. We are never ever ever taking any of our dogs there again. I would HIGHLY recommend CARE AT THE COURTYARD VET CLINIC in Visalia. They are the exact opposite of these people. THE ONE GOOD THING ABOUT THIS VET is that he is very inexpensive. But my dog deserves better treatment even if it is more costly. We are on a tight budget and wanted to save money but that is a mistake we will never repeat again. You get what you pay for. Read Less

My dog was dieing from Valley fever and I didn't know what to do because I couldn't afford an expensive vet bill for medication. He saved my animals life and for a great cost!! Not only did he not charge me a walk-in fee, but he discounted the price for medication and gave me free wet dog food (about $50 overall). I also got my 90 lb Lab neutered for under $100 (and his surgery was more invasive than most!) The animals are his main concern and he's always willing to help those in need.Read Less

I found a kitten in the street and told myself I would try to find it a home, but until then I would get it all of its shots. Well, nobody wanted him, so it looks like I have a new member of my family. All I can say is WOW, the Vet here is a lovely man. Not very chatty, but obviously great at what he does, and the prices are reasonable.

Read Less

I went to pick her up and I had to pay a down payment of $100 to take her and then they worked with me on making payments for the rest.
