We love Dr. Cahill as she is such an amazing pet doctor. She knows so much about animal health and how best to treat my dog with as little psychological trauma as possible. (My dog has anxieties and she has helped so much with his ear infection and arthritis without him freaking out and crying like he has in the past with other vets.) We started going to Academy Animal Hospital quite a few years ago, because frankly the other Vets in the area had attitudes like they where doing us a favor just by seeing us and the cost of the visits kept going up and up and up . Also I was surprised the Doctor would actually come into the room and do the exam herself and sit and answer every question I could come up with, instead of having a tech come in and do all the routine stuff and then the Doc would come in for two mins. or so and the tech would finish up . The other clinic's just seemed to be turn and burn mills. It is not that way at Academy Animal Hospital. The facility may not be as modern as the others but the service and quality of care is far superior to all the others in town that I have been to and I think I have been to most of them . Everyone in the clinic knows our dogs names and pretty much how their health is going. The employees seem to actually enjoy their jobs and are friendly and caring and helpful. I put a lot of trust in the Doctor and believe that my dogs health is as important to her as it is to my wife and I. She does not jump to the most expensive treatment but starts at the least invasive course first and builds from there. The medicines she prescribes are fairly priced and affordable. I really do believe that our Vet is in business because she cares about the health of peoples animals and believes that everyone has a right to affordable care for there pets. Sometime your pet is the only person in your life that you have and I think she knows that . Academy Animal Hospital was recommended to me by a friend, because I requested help with finding a good caring vet, had only poor relationship with all previous vets in Joplin since I moved here 3 yrs. ago. The first place recommended was not taking any new patients. I went to the Academy and spoke to the person at the reception desk and was given several choices of when I could bring my pets in for their first visit, a dog and a cat, and they were very happy to see both on the same visit which went well. I took my cat in for a follow-up visit and they carefully placed me in an exam room as soon as I opened the door because their were dogs in the waiting area. Fast, Efficient and Cheap! I was pleasantly surprised at the warm welcome and efficient service I received when I brought my dog to Academy Animal Hospital for a rabies shot. Never have I ever walked out of a veterinarian's office for $10. The staff explained to me how the shot would be given and what to look for regarding reactions or side effects. My dog is one and half years old.  He had been going to another vet and I just wasn't that happy.  I decided to switch.  I was very happy that I did.  Dr. Serrano was amazing.  He sat on the floor and interacted with my dog to make sure he felt comfortable.  He spent a lot of time answering all of my concerns/questions.  The staff was very friendly, caring and helpful.  They were all very attentive and gave the best care possible.  This was the best vet visit I have ever experienced. We have been going to Academy since my childhood with my first pets, now as an adult I bring my own family's pets and level of service and compassion is still utterly unmatched. I can't tell you enough about how happy we are to have found Academy Animal Hospital and Dr. Cahill. Sadly we lost one of our boys to a congenital Heart defect but Doc was with him and us every step of the way. I want to thank Drs Serrano and Beccari for all the care and concern they showed me and my dog, Wyly, who has been very ill for the last few months. I always got great care through the years from everyone there, both the vets and the vet techs.  Many times they have gone out of there way for me, whether it was Danny coming in on a Sunday so that I could pick up my dog or Kathy who showed extra concern and talked to Dr B when I was out of town or others who processed Wyly's prescriptions in a hurry when I suddenly ran out. But in the last month or so when Wyly worsened I got frequent calls from both doctors who were just checking in to see how things were going. These calls were so helpful as they reassured me that I was on the right path and doing the right thing for my dog at a very difficult time.  Academy Animal Hospital is kind and loving place staffed by wonderful people! We have 3 dogs: 2- pugs and a ? (but he looks like a wheaton doodle). Our oldest pug has has gone blind, lost an eye, has had mast cell tumors, has gone deaf and has arthritis. Our younger pug has had a collapsed trachea and other breathing issues. Our lil' mutt has had behavioral problems and aggression issues. This is our little family and they mean the world to us. Academy is just an extension of our family and has helped us to work through all these issues. They have been amazing at caring and following up with us over the years anytime something is wrong. They know how much we treasure our pups and Academy treats them (and us) like a member of their own family. ABSOLUTELY AWESOME VET HOSPITAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dr Beccari & Dr Serrano have been taking care of my furry boy since we brought him home, rescue from Helen Woodward, over 4 years ago. I cannot say enough about this facility (clinic), staff, doctors. They are courteous, professional and always try to accommodate our requests and answer all of our questions. They call to check up on Scooter when he has been sick and are always there to assist in any way possible. Although we live in close relationship to their facility I would drive miles to still have Scooter seen by this clinic. I was not told the cost of the procedures like the nurse had told me over the phone, and I was never given the diagnosis.  My dog had red, itchy eyes and I walked out of there with a $300 bill.  Dr. Becarri was not a effective communicator, he went ahead and performed procedures without even telling me how expensive they were.  I never did find out what Buster had.  I feel ripped off. Dr. Becarri is our vet and he is dah bomb. In fact, everyone at Academy Animal Hospital is dah bomb! All of the nurses, techs, office staff, etc are extremely friendly, compassionate, and knowledgeable. If someone doesn't know an answer to one of our questions, they will find out and call you back. We have been taking our lab Bailey to Academy Animal Hospital since she was 8 weeks old. She is now three and I can only say how happy and thankful we are that our neighbors recommended them to us. I took my boy Gus in for nutering:( Dr Beccari and his exceptional staff allayed my fears. You can see from the first moment that you walk in the door that they love animals. After the surgery Dr Beccari came out and explained the entire surgery, he even cleaned out his ears while he was sedated! Dr. Serrano is a great vet. We switched to Academy after being at VCA and are really happy we did. We all want to do whats best for our pets but it is sometimes hard to accept that you need to spend $3,000 on your dog right this minute when there are other alternatives. Dr. Serrano is very good about telling you when you do need to take action and take it now, or if it is ok to take another approach and wait it out. He kept our little Chug Buster going for a year after finding out he had Cushings and then subsequently SARDS and liver issues. He was proactive about his health and made the decision very clear to us when it was time to say good bye to our beloved pet. We are so happy we got another year with our pup and owe it to his great care here! We take all of our dogs here now!The receptionist have always been awesome to me. They are always happy and if you have any questions you can call and they will make sure to answer any questions you have. Even the receptionist were devastated when we lost our pup, they really care about the animals! Overall we are so happy to have found a vet like Dr. Serrano and a place like Academy! Read Less

First off I have been taking my dogs here for years. I have 3 dogs all rescued. As soon as I rescued my last two, I called up Academy and they gave them free general exams to make sure everything was fine and there was no situation that I needed to address. Most recently I had to bring in my 13 year old weimeraner, whatever he had he wasn't going to make it, we sadly had to put hi down. As hard as that is to do, Academy went above and beyond! A few days had passed and we got a card signed by the entire staff, then just recently they made a donation in Rocky's name to the Humane Society! They provide excellent service and are definitely 'pet lovers'. Spencer later had surgery and treatment and is doing great. Academy Animal Hospital has been taking care of our pets for 20 years. When our schnauzer, Willie, finally (at age 14) had to be put down, Dr. Beccari felt as bad as I did. I am so disappointed :( being new in town trying Academy as my new Vet, I got a quote to have my dogs teeth cleaned. The quote was for $480 I thought this was on the high side but trusted that they would do a good job and I wanted to support the community where I live. After the procedure the bill was $1300! The care seemed to be okay but no one deserves to be ripped off. I mean really. My dogs teeth were just cleaned last year at a different vet with some extractions and it was $300. We used Academy to board our Border Collie, Bonnie, over the Thanksgiving holiday while we were in town to visit friends and family. The staff were friendly and genuinely happy to see their new guest! Usually one or 2 staff will handle a boarding, but just about everyone in the office seemed to know we were coming, which made us feel special and cared for. During our visit, I took Bonnie out one day, and we went to one of the many beaches nearby. The staff gave us great directions to a dog friendly one where dogs can run off-leash. When we picked up Bonnie to return home, everyone in the office came out to say goodbye to Bonnie.Ok, so Bonnie is a dog. Albeit a smart one. But she is not a person. She wouldn't know the difference. As long as there is food, and maybe a ball, she's in. But the quality care and service the staff at Academy showed was for me. Clearly they get pet ownership and how important the safety and security and well being of our pets is to us. They know the genuine pain we experience when we hand off that leash to someone else.The best thing about Academy and the moment that I knew they were a great office, was when we returned from the beach. As I let Bonnie out of the car, she bounded up the walkway to the office door and opened the door (she can do that) and walked in tail wagging as the staff said, "Bonnie! How was the beach?"Great office, great doctors, and a wonderful cheery staff, open weekdays and weekends, highly recommend the boarding kennel option if you need a break. Easy access from 5, 10 mins from Solana or Cardiff by the Sea or Dog beach. Awesome. Read Less

I called last minute to get in and the staff stayed late to see her I was very concerned but quickly put at easy. I'm not sure which Vet my dog saw but she was nice and knowledgeable. About 200$ for an exam and urinary analysis. A little expensive for me, but worth every penny knowing she got what she needed and will feel better soon. I recommend this place very much! Read Less

I typically do not write review, but I'm making an exception for Academy Animal Hospital.  I have taken several different pets there for more than a decade and am always impressed with their level of expertise, care, professionalism and kindness.  Over the years I have surgical procedures such as dog teeth cleanings, removal of foxtail from the nasal cavity, removal of tumors which were all handled beautifully.  I am comfortable taking my dog to any of the top notch vets Dr. John Beccari, Dr. Justie Reimann, Dr. Lou Serrano, and Dr. David Zanders.  I've worked with them all.  Dr. Beccari was exceptionally compassionate and caring when he came to our home during the evening earlier this year to euthanize our beloved 16 year-old yellow lab.  I would not hesitate in recommending this fine group of vets and their staff to my family and friends. We have three large dogs. Although they are in excellent health, occasionally we do have to take them to the Vet (shots, checkups, and the occasional ouchey). When we moved into the area from out of state, I wasn't sure which Vet we should bring our guys to. When we found Academy, we couldn't have been happier.Everyone from the Receptionist to the Veterinarians were wonderful, caring, and compassionate. I've had the misfortune of finding a bad Vet in the past, but Academy really took great care of not just our pets. I will be taking my dogs to see Dr Zanders, Dr Serrano, and Dr Beccari from now on. Dr. Zanders is our vet and we love bringing our little guy in to see him. We always know we're receiving the highest quality care. The nurses are also fantastic as they have a huge passion for what they are doing and really love all the animals who come in. We have also boarded our little guy there when we travel. He's very well taken care of and we always feel comfortable leaving knowing he's in great hands. I would give this place a -1 one if I could.  Because Academy Animal Hospital is within closer proximity to my home, I decided to switch my pup over.  I have been regretting that decision ever since.  I'll drive 45 minutes if it means I'll receive quality, caring vet services (i switched back to my old vet)!The last time I was in here, my pooch was having trouble keeping down her food.  Dr. Serrano responded by prescribing me over $900 in medications and operations...all for some food sickness!  To make matters worse, he implied that all of these things needed to be done, otherwise I'm an incompetent owner...I'm no vet, but it just seemed REALLY excessive to me!  I ended up walking out with prescription medication, and my dog was healthy a day later.   I am shocked how willing this place is to make extra money, and take advantage of their customers at the expense of the lives of dogs and cats.  Really, my dog could have died if I did all of the things Dr. Serrano recommended!  He even admitted to me that his practice is a business, and their greatest priority is making money and paying the bills.  That's understandable, but it shouldn't be at the expense of the dogs and their owners!Avoid this place!!!
