General Info
Located in South San Francisco, CA, Spruce Avenue Pet Hospital has been proudly serving the South San Francisco, Daly City, and Colma communities for over 35 years. The practice was opened in 1978 by Dr. Donald Griffin, and in 2014, the reigns were transferred to the new owner and medical director, Dr. Jagbir Kahlon. Sadly, in October of 2012, Dr. Griffin passed away, but left behind countless memories from pet owners and staff of his professional, compassionate care as well as his passion for animals. Although a great deal has changed since our inception, one thing that has remained the same is the philosophy and high level of care that Dr. Griffin established.
Spruce Avenue Pet Hospital uses state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and is known for bringing high quality medicine to pets of California. We also offer high-quality surgical and medical care by combining old-fashioned values like honesty, integrity, compassion, and hard work with cutting-edge technology, equipment, and procedures. In an effort to accommodate more of our busy clients who work during the day, we offer extended hours during the week and on Saturday.

Went in for my new pet patient visit today, May 5th. I paid $50 for the Vet MD Rodger Claxton, to be short with performing an exam or even wanting to answer the health questions and concerns I had for my pet. He was extremely rude and seemed very annoyed with caring for my pet. What really bothered me was the fact that he was speaking, said "hold on." Walked out the room and never came back. The tech came back in to further explain my pet treatment plan. As I was walked out the room, I found Rodger bragging about how he was about to go to lunch. I immediately expressed frustration to the girl behind the counter. She had him answer the remaining questions I had. His responses still very short and rude. I asked how many times a day I should be giving my pet the medication he prescribed? His response was "you can read the label." He didnt even bother to explain what he was prescribing and how it was going to help my pet. The girl disappeared from behind the counter. Rodger goes "it that it?" Before, I could respond, he had walked out the door. The male vet tech came with the medication, cause like I said the girl disappeared. The Male vet tech, was nice, very informative. I wish I could remember his name. Thankfully for him he saved the bad experience with Rodger. He heard my frustrations, cause I definitely expressed them again. He remained calm, courteous and took the time to reassure and explained that what Rodger prescribed was safe for my pet. He told me to apply the prescribed ointment twice a day. That information wasn't on the label, like Rodger said it would be. My puppy is only 4 months old. He is my furbaby! I don't know what makes Rodger have a huge ego, and walk around like he is some know it all with out any facts to back up the responses to one's questions. I hope my pet gets better, cause I'm not sure if I'll be back here. Read Less

The 1st time I took one of my fur baby's to this veterinarian The on call that was very friendly and helpful. We travel for my husband's work and we move around California. We just happen to be back in the area when our other fur baby got sick. They have an event Mary so instead of trying to find another vetinairy in office since we are not from here we took it to the same office. Not even 5 minutes in the office. The vet our Fur baby for 30 seconds And said She needs an x-ray and blood work He said He believes that she has a dangerous poison in her uterus. Has a wait minute I'm here because she was constipated and may have some teeth that need to be pulled but not for her uterus. At that moment I already knew I was being scammed at my for babies expense. What do you do with that moment when your baby's not feeling well and they need to be examined you go ahead and get it regardless of what the price so $580 later for the vetenary in to say no that's not what she has but will give her some antibiotic It's something for inflammation. I've had a very hard time finding vets for my dog Loki as he was very badly abused and neglected before my boyfriend and I adopted him. This causes him to be aggressive when faced with situations he finds to be scary. But this Vet knew exactly what he was doing and knew that Loki was acting out of fear. Even though Loki had to be mussled for his procedures (for obvious reasons) this vet was very reassuring and only let out calm energy no matter how scared and unruly Loki got. Every vet we had taken Loki to prior reflected Loki's stress and made the poor dog more scared and stressed out. Loki successfully got all of his shots and his nails trimmed without any unnecessary injury on Loki's part. I 100% would recommend this place. I know that my baby boy is in good and understanding hands here. My only sadness is that this vet can't take care of exotic pets as I have rabbits as well. Read Less

If I could give zero stars I would. The purpose of this letter is to document the events that culminated in the death of our beloved dog Maxi on March 8, 2013 and to alert the public about the actions of Spruce Avenue Pet Hospital. We believe that the hospital acted totally unprofessionally. First of all, we acknowledge that our dog was very sick, and that is why we sought their services. During the week prior to her passing we were given an IV with fluids and were told to have her come in for an X-ray.On March 8, 2013 we brought our dog into the hospital during the morning. She was very responsive and actually resisted being crated. At about 3 p.m. that day we called the hospital to see if she was ready to pick up. We called for 30 minutes until someone finally answered the phone. When the hospital finally answered we were told that she was ready to be picked up. At about 4 p.m. we drove to the hospital to pick up our dog. We were given 2 bottles of pills (one bottle was 40 pills short and we were told that we could pick them up next week). It was explained that Maxi had a heart problem, with water build up and hopefully the medication would make things better. They were to send the x-ray to someone that could provide further guidance. We were then brought to the front desk and paid for several cans of a new food (at first the person thought Maxi was a cat, but was informed that she was a dog). We were given a card with a hand written number and the lady told us to call at any time if we had any problems with Maxi. She seemed very sincere and it was comforting to know that there was a number that we could call after hours.Upon arriving home it seemed that Maxi was heavily sedated. She was not able to walk and simply slept. We called the hospital, and the number on the card, but no one answered. For the next 3 hours we continued to call and no one answered. The hand written number (that we were told to call at any time if there were a problem) would go to an answering machine and we left messages asking if Maxi had been sedated and hoping to get a response. None came. Kept calling and calling and leaving messages. No call back. At about 8 p.m. Maxi grew worse and died in our arms. We were (and still are) devastated. We called again and left a message (not a nice one) on the answering machine indicating that our dog had died and that the hospital had been totally unresponsive. We grieved all weekend, and on Monday to our shock a message was left on our voicemail from the hospital that Maxi had Pneumonia and that we should come in and purchase additional medication!!! Our dog had been dead for 3 days. The message so disturbed us, that we cannot explain the feeling. They had not even bothered to check for our messages. We hope that the hospital can learn from this situation. Needless to say we are looking into filing a formal complaint with the State of California veterinary Licensing Board. Read Less

Read Less

My dog has had 2 tumors removed, and I hope Doc wants to keep practicing for all the years that I plan to have pets. I even like all the interns I've met there through the years. They get good training in how to do things right! Read Less
