St Helena Veterinary Hospital

St Helena, California
General Info
St Helena Veterinary Hospital (St Helena, CA) guides pet owners through every step of the veterinary care process by providing comfort, communication, and consistency from start to finish. During the initial consultation, new patients are evaluated based on their symptomology, behavioral patterns, and dietary habits in relation to previous medical diagnoses. A comprehensive physical examination follows, which analyzes the weight, oral health, posture, skin condition, and any abnormal breathing or heartbeat. The team looks for both obvious and subtle signs that a pet might need a closer exam to uncover issues that may have gone unnoticed. The St Helena Veterinary Hospital provides vital services such as heartworm prevention, fecal and blood tests, dental exams, and nutritional advice. The clinic devises treatment schemes targeted at chronic itching, joint issues, stomach disturbances, and energy depletion based on the test data aiming at long-lasting effects. Pet owners also have to follow a complex set of instructions on ensuring the pet’s safety and well-being at home after discharge. Another benefit is that all records are maintained within the app, which is helpful when using multiple vets (for check-ups or a second opinion) or when different pets need treatment. Multiple families from St Helena repeatedly attend health and wellness sessions and post treatment assessments that are age-related and seasonal. St Helena Veterinary Hospital also places importance on progress monitoring, owner feedback, and communication. Thanks to this approach, the pets in California can attain better health while the care process stays within reach of their families. The team provides specialty services such as Anesthesiology, Blood Pressure Monitoring, Bloodwork, Cardiology, and Dental Care. Clients consistently commend the practice’s team for their care and attention to pets’ needs. Whether it’s a routine check-up or an intricate surgical procedure, your pet is assured of receiving top-notch care in a serene and hospitable setting. Additionally, services such as diagnostics, grooming, and the in-house pharmacy or laboratory are available on site.

My family and I have been bringing all of our pets to Dr. Gold for almost 20 years. We've had quite a different experience than the other reviewer. Yes, there are times where Dr. Gold is extremely busy and the techs will handle smaller tasks. Surprising? No, He's the only Vet in town, he's going to be swamped. I do NOT recommend taking your animals to Dr. Franklin as an alternative in Calistoga. My dog's trachea is now semi-collapsed due to an inadequate anesthesiologist there. With that being said, 95% of the time David spends at least 15-20 minutes addressing concerns after the issue is explained to him. He will even pet/hold the animals while talking so they are comfortable with him (it also comforts the owner). Another positive: he's not quick to jump on pumping animals full of medications or suggesting surgeries unless absolutely necessary. Also a nice clean environment. My only complaint is that the benches in the waiting room area suck, but big whoop. Read Less

We had an emergency with one of our llamas and Dr. Gold came out the same day to exam her.  Unfortunately, there was nothing that could be done for her but Dr. Gold was able to end her suffering.  Living in the Napa Valley, our options are very limited for large animal vets and I'm very thankful him and his office were so quick to respond to our emergency, especially on a Saturday.  We'll be keeping his information on file for future needs with our llamas. Dr. Gold was the primary vet for my two beagles when they lived in St. Helena full time.  They both had 6 teeth cleanings along the way, no issues, happy dogs.  I really like that he is practical and they don't try to sell to you or scare you. On Aug 2015 they were even willing to clean my beagle's teeth even though he has not been a regular patient.  Actually, next to the UCDavis Vet Teaching Hospital, this is the only vet and clinic I trust with my dogs life. The 4 stars vs 5, you may have your rich and class lacking St. Helena resident in there with a sick pet so expect snobs and sense of entitlement from a few of their clients. Read Less

I wish I could give them more than 5 stars, for so many different reasons. We are new to St. Helena and reached out to them when we moved in. Dr. Gold and Katherine blocked off time to meet with us and show us around their amazing facility. I was incredibly impressed that they took the time out of their very busy day to do so! Fast forward a month or so and we had a minor emergency with one of my dogs. We called right at closing time and they took us in without blinking an eye, kept my dog over night...with the Doc checking in on him throughout the night. Absolutely amazing service and standard of care. This is an ongoing issue that we have had with our dog and Dr. Gold's treatment was far superior and far less expensive than anything that we had received while living in San Francisco. Dr. Gold's knowledge, skill and judgement are like nothing I have experienced in all the years that I have had animals (which is a long time!). I'm so grateful that we have St. Helena Vet less than a mile away! I cannot sing their praises enough. Read Less

I wish there was a ZERO!Dr. Gold  is not a kind, personable or caring. I've tried many times. He's not thorough and will send a pet home without exams or blood test.  He doesn't come out and talk to you, sends his vet tech to do it. Today a dear friend called in tears. She took her 3 yr. old pup in yesterday as he was having trouble breathing. She was told he had a broken rib and to take him home. 12 hrs. Later the pup in serious distress, Dr. Gold was called and never returned the call. The pup was rushed to Santa Rosa Emergency. Immediately tests were run, a blood test indicated he had eaten some rat poison. He could have been saved by a blood test with Dr.  Gold.I will tell everyone I know to NEVER NEVER go there and cite repeated occurances I've had when taking  a pet in at the owner's request.
