Incompetent staff. Told me my dog has Parvo and he is going to die.
I called this office in advance to ask if they treat Parvo. The woman said yes bring him in but stay in the parking lot. When I arrive, she comes outside and says "uh yeah he looks pretty lethargic, wow. I'll be right back." 5 minutes later she comes out with a parvo testing kit. Checks my dog and goes back inside. She comes back out 25 minutes later, all the while I am scared my dog is suffering and is going to die. She states he has parvo and I need to take him to Butterfield hospital, because "we don't treat parvovirus at Vail Ranch hospital. He's like really bad, your dog is going to die, I will be right back to get an invoice for $75." Then she walks away slowly.
I'm very concerned and I grab my dog and put him into the car and drive down the street in a hurry to get treatment at Butterfield hospital. I arrive, go inside and frantically tell them, "my dog has parvo is going to die please help me." Keep in mind ...This is a pure bred $2800.00 blue Doberman. He is only 7 months old, my sons best friend and is thoroughly trained already at this age. He protected us from a coyote, killed it, brought the head to our door and was transmitted with parvo immediately because of the coyote.
So now I'm at the hospital and the lady says, "ok sir, give me one second to grab the forms to admit him". Just then I realize I drove away and didn't wait for the extremely slow staff member at Vail to return with my invoice, and so I call Vail and inform them that I'm sorry, I freaked out and drove away without paying, can you please take a payment over the phone. As I'm telling this to the woman, I hear in the background at Vail, the slow staff member being obnoxious on the phone and telling Butterfield, "like oh my God, this guy just totally didn't even pay for the parvo check, yeah like he is going to come there and try to get his dog fixed but still owes us $75."
I inform her associate, "look, tell your friend over there to calm down. I am sorry I drove away after she told me my dog is going to die. I called you guys immediately and am paying you, over the phone, before she could even dial the phone because she is so slow. I could care less about your $75, this dogs worth over $3500 because of his training and his ears, etc."
I paid the bill. She didn't apologize, I moved on.
My dog was treated for parvo at Butterfield. Since then, he has killed other coyotes, kept our children safe, and never contracted parvo again.
It is frustrating to think a minimum wage front desk staff member at a low grade establishment is allowed to make generalized statements such as your dog is going to die. That was a scary feeling and her ignorance to the situation caused her to make an incorrect assumption. Making a judgement call on the prognosis of my dog was her error and she needs to be held accountable. A year has gone by, and I forgot about this, until I noticed a sign outside of San Diego County Credit Union which states that Vail Ranch Vet hospital is moving next to my bank. It reminded me of this an I wanted to make others aware. If you want your animals taken care of; go to Butterfield. Read Less
