I took my cat here for a checkup because she had gotten very fat. I didn't think she was pregnant because she was an indoor cat so she must be sick? After a 4 hour checkup and $700 bill I was told she was pregnant and went home. She delivered 3 healthy babies that night in my closet. I was ripped off. No need for $700 checkup test when it was obvious to honest veterinarian that she was pregnant - that's all I wanted to know and all I asked for. Now, I go to VCA Advanced Veterinary Care on Hawthorne Blvd in Lawndale and am very happy with them. This is quite a bit further from where I live but worth the drive to get good veterinarian care. I'd give less than 1 star if I could. Read Less

So disappointed and overcharged. I brought my dog for diagnosis of her neurological issue. They told me that a neurologist is not available tonight but will see her next morning. A doctor discussed about performing MRI as a part of diagnosis. An assistant came back to me with estimate and the estimate included "diagnostic package". My understanding was the diagnostic package includes all the diagnosis including MRI we just discussed. I had my dog hospitalized overnight and next morning they called me and said my dog needs to be transferred to a different hospital because they don't do MRI here. What a surprise!! I expected to get the result this morning but have to go through paying another exam fee at a different hospital and pay thousands of $$$$ to get MRI. Their recording (while waiting on the phone) even mention "MRI". This is a LIE or WHAT!? I just spend $1600 to give her IV and hospitalized her overnight. In addition to the estimate they gave me, they also made me sign to pay another $300 - $700 to give her CPR when my dog stopped breathing! Flaking expensive and misleading. Read Less

Animal Emergency Medical Center has been providing the best veterinary care for my dog and cats for more than ten years. The staff at the front desk treat me like family. They know me and my pets, and the technicians and doctors treat my animals like they are their own. Dr. Quantz and her staff are trustworthy, caring, and thorough. They have always provided the highest level of care and treatment, and I know they truly care about their patients. It is very hard and stressful when my animals get sick or injured, and I feel more at ease and confident that my dog and cats are in the best hands at AEMC. Diagnosis and treatment are clearly and thoroughly explained, and all of my questions and concerns are addressed. For the highest level of care and treatment for your animals, take them to AEMC. It's truly unfortunate that some folks have given such negative reviews of AEMC. I've had to bring two dogs to them for various issues. I always felt that the entire staff was incredibly caring, compassionate, and knowledgeable. In an emergency situation, I would not take my pets anywhere else. We have had to bring our African Gray Parrot twice and our Min-Pin/Chihuahua mix dog once here for emergency care and never been disappointed.  Dr. Fording saw to the care of our bird when he slipped and fell off of his perch resulting in a crack in his beak and Dr. Murata looked after him when he received a cheek puncture while playing with our cockatoo.  Many emergency hospitals do not treat birds, and we were relieved to find one where even the traditional vets will be sure a bird is stabilized in an emergency before calling in the avian vet.  Both vets were patient and understanding with our shy little guy (Dr. Murata even put in her discharge notes that he was 'a sweetie and we look forward to seeing him again soon'), offered him the best of care, and called to check on his progress when we took him home.  Our dog received a deep scratch on her nose that looked worse than it was, but Dr. Fording addressed all of our concerns and gave her thorough treatment.  We recently brought our macaw to Dr. Murata for his wellness check and she was both thorough and gentle with him as well as being patient with his antics!!  Although we have been using another vet's office for our birds and have been pleased with the care, we have decided to transfer their vet care to AEMC, as we have been equally happy with the care received there and it makes us feel better to have our birds' regular and emergency vets be one in the same. Let me preface this review by saying that I am extremely picky and weary of veterinarians.  I was told that Dr. Leeds was the absolute best in the business for TPLO surgeries but was also told that he can come off as blunt and maybe a little rude but set up an appointment anyways. The receptionists are definitely the most friendly and helpful vet office workers I've ever met. Super personable and didn't treat me like a robot. Dr. Leeds initial office visit went well and he came in and reviewed my newfoundlands x rays and confirmed that she indeed had torn both of her ACLs.  We went over options and he gave me his honest opinion about what is the best thing to do, no bullsh*t.  I really appreciate this type of advice since I don't want to put my dog through any surgery twice unnecessarily.  The price was slightly higher than what I had seen from other vets, granted I have a giant breed dog, but he seemed like he was extremely knowledgeable so I set up her surgery date and I am beyond glad that I did.Dropped her off at the vet the morning of the surgery, he called me immediately after surgery to confirm that everything went well and she was just waking up from anesthesia.  As a standard practice after this surgery they keep her overnight for observation which I appreciated, and I know she was well taken care of.  The office staff even came out to help me load her into my car since a 110lb sedated dog is not an easy feat to handle. I can without a doubt 100% say that my dogs incision and staples are the cleanest most precise surgery I have ever seen.  I belong to a TPLO group online and have seen the hack jobs that other vets have done and it looked NOTHING like how Dr. Leeds performed surgery on my newfoundland.  The staples were on the inside part of her leg and healed beautifully.  After we were ready to take the staples out and before her fur grew back in I could barely even tell that she had such a major surgery.  They were also available for an emergency appointment after the surgery when she started to build up some fluid in her leg.  Dr. Leeds even came out to my car so I didn't have to unload her into the vets office and gave me specific instructions to help reduce the fluid.  Just as he described it ended up going away on its own.  7 months later and my girl is better than she was ever in the first place, I can't feel the hardware in her leg at all and she doesn't whine while sitting anymore.  She can run and play with other dogs with no issues now and I 100% contribute it to Dr. Leeds fantastic surgery.  I will definitely come back again if I ever have to and would recommend Dr. Leeds to anyone needing any ACL repair surgery.  He is slightly expensive and may not be the most personable, but results is what matters most to me and he did a brilliant job. Avoid coming at all costs. They are expensive and the service is subpar. The only good person I have come across is Dr. Murphy but she can't carry the weight of the offices inefficiency. From day one that we transferred our dog from another hospital. They keep dropping the ball and don't take accountability for it. To make matters worse, from day one the night doctor (she had red hair, don't remember her name) was very cold in a time when we were upset about our dogs condition, and pretty much told us she saw people went through what we were every day, that we weren't the first or last to have to make the choice between paying or thinking about the consequences of not giving him treatment. It was very rude and cold, the lack of empathy is a culture here. I will be doing what I need to do to transfer my dogs case elsewhere and advise everyone else to not walk but run away.I did notice the poor reviews but I figured people made them at a time of frustration, but I can see how they can bring that out of people. I honestly think they don't really care, except for Dr. Murphy. I am sorry Dr. Murphy, your kindness cannot make up for the rest of them. Read Less

I had a pretty horrific accident occur this past weekend with my little Yorkie, and only due to the location and having veterinarians available on a Sunday, did I end up at Animal Emergency Medical Center. Without getting too involved, (as I am still a little in shock and don't care to relive it) my friend who I was with when the accident occurred, looked up the nearest vet and called their office. Since it was a Sunday, the office she called had no doctor's in, so they kindly referred us to Animal Emergency Medical Center. My friend called ahead to their office and explained what happened, so they were expecting us. Upon our arrival, we were greeted warmly and they immediately took my dog back for an examination. First of all, let me start off by saying, I'm EXTREMELY particular. Second of all, I am typically a skeptical or "cautious" person, to put it lightly. I am big on paying attention to the vibes I receive from people and businesses. I was definitely in shock and quite upset when I arrived to the office around 3:30 pm. Things seemed to be moving fast and obviously a lot of information needed to be given to the staff. My friend stepped in to help and the staff was really on point. They were extremely kind, efficient and explanatory. No red flags went up for me whatsoever! After the examination, the doctor spoke with me and completely walked me thru the entire situation. In short, my dog needed to have a laceration surgery and would have to stay overnight. I have had my pup for 10 years, and I have NEVER had any sort of accident happen to her, so digesting all of this information was a lot.On top of my dog's physical well-being, and my emotional state, there was the issue of cost. I was literally dreading the amount of the estimate, but realized there was nothing I could do, so I quickly accepted that it was going to be what it was going to be and that was that. When they brought me up to discuss the estimate, I was pleasantly surprised and totally relieved. Every situation is different, so I don't feel like you can compare the cost of one injury against another, but I did not feel taken advantage of, and that was a good feeling. After I left the office, I called them around 8:45 pm to check in, and was able to speak with someone right before my dog went in for surgery. I asked that the doctor call me after she was done performing the surgery, and she called me back at 11:20 pm. The surgery went smoothly and she was happy with the outcome. I then proceeded with a follow up call at 2:00 am and they gave me a positive, thorough update. The doctor who performed the surgery then called me again at 6:20 am, before she was done her shift, and completely went over everything one more time. She said my pup was up, active, and acting like nothing happened! She told me I could come pick her up around 9:00 am, at which time I was advised on which medications were being prescribed, what they were for, how to administer them, and in what doses. I am also to follow up with an appointment in 2-3 days for them to re-bandage her wound.Bottom line, not one part or one person when dealing with Animal Emergency Medical Center was disappointing or upsetting. Everyone was kind, professional and thorough. My pup is recovering incredibly well and is no pain from the surgery. I really thank these amazing people who work at all hours of the night to be there for our furry family members. Read Less

I am literally in the room right now and my cat who "is not critical" they want to hospitalize overnight because they have 3 other "critical" case right now and can't get to his bloodwork and urinary analysis right away and don't want to keep me waiting! Really??? Under the guise of convenience they want to convince me to leave my already skittish kitty here overnight because they don't have time to draw urine??? Seemed money hungry when I first got here, making you sign something that said that the average visit was $400-$700 when the exam itself is only $95? How the f**k can they estimate the cost when they don't know what the f**k is wrong with your animal??? I NEVER EVER write reviews about anything or anyone but after reading the previous ones that validated my own concerns, I completely agree. This place is bullshit crap!!! They just came in to say the vet who is WAY TOO BUSY to look at my cat wants to send me home with pain medication without knowing if/why he is in any pain. Are you seriously f**king kidding me??? The vet who was too busy with "critical" cases apparently had the time to offer injections for additional $$ before I take my cat home... he is third in line "to be honest" she said. Hahahaha.... I just told the vet how horrible the reviews are and she said that was true of EVERY ER VET!!! "Because most animals that come in (t)here die". I won't feel comfortable until they bring my kitty to me from the back!!! Why is the owner kept from the "exam"? I am taking him home NOW! They literally just told me that once they get my payment they will give me my cat!!! F**king horsesh*t!!! They almost killed my dog with their irresponsibility and lack of care. A few months ago, my terrier got into the cupboard and got into a bag of trail mix with chocolate in it. We rushed him to this location because it was close to our house but we had been warned my our vet never to go there prior. We went in with an open mind regardless because we felt it was the safest bet for our dog due to its proximity to our house. When we arrived they took our dog back and asked us permission to make him vomit and we gave our blessing and said please do ASAP! An hour later and after some back and fourth, we were invited to a room where we were told they wanted to keep him overnight for $2500 and "monitor him" and it gets better... they told us they decided not to make him throw up because he "seemed stable." Rule number 1 when it comes to dogs and chocolate.. you make them throw up! You get it out ASAP! Safe to say I was PISSED and scared. I asked her exactly what they did for him and they said they did nothing but check his heart rate. I shared a few choice words and demanded they release my dog to me immediately. They warned me I shouldn't take him and that he should stay overnight to be "watched" for $2500. And that they didn't think he needed to vomit. They charged me $150 and I rushed to another animal hospital off Torrance blvd. When I got there and told them the situation the vet tech went pale when I told her how much time had passed since he ate the bag of Chocolate. They took him back and made him vomit immediately and took us back and showed us all of his dark chocolate vomit. Bowls full. Literally bowls full and he's only 17 lbs. They said he would have most likely went into kidney/liver failure if we waited much longer. They kept him overnight and charged us $750. He had correlated charcoal and fluids as well. They said if we left him overnight at the other hospital or even for a few more hours there, we could have had a fatal situation. I'm still so pissed at this place I could scream. Not cool. I read the reviews here on Yelp, and found many to be quite unfavorable, but I was referred to this facility by our regular vet Dr. Tran of The Family Vet, whom I trust. I am happy to report that I have nothing but favorable things to say about this animal hospital. The doctors and staff were professional, yet also kind, caring and compassionate in treating my 17-year plus old kitty for her pancreatitis and related problems. The treatment she received not only extended her life, but also provided her with quality of life. I did not experience any of the unfortunate incidents recounted in other reviews, although I can see how misunderstandings could occur, given the stressful situation for the pet parent(s), as well as the emergency staff.A special thank you to Dr. Bonnie Murphy and Robin Field, who took such good care of my little Mi-Yow during her treatment, and who helped me when it was time to say goodbye. I also wanted to mention the other doctors and staff who were so wonderful to me and my kitty (sorry if I didn't remember everyone) - Dr. Mahoney, Robin, Robyn, Theresa, Stephanie, Colleen, Caylynn, Sierra, Kelly, Kat, Jennifer, Joanie, Hallie, John, and Dennis; also Drs. Just look at yelp to see the truth. Incompetent and greedy in the most vulnerable time of people's lives. Here is my review from Yelp:I brought my dog in and he seemed to deteriorate day by day in their care. I was hesitant to leave him in the first place but the owner made me feel like I would be killing my dog if I didn't leave him. After days of expensive treatment (about $5,000) and little inexpensive investigation like a stool sample, my gut told me enough was enough. On the last day they had him, when they brought him in the exam room, he immediately went to the door close to the exit and started pounding his head clearly showing me he wanted to go home. I was so mad at myself that I trusted these people who gave few answers and seemed so incompetent. I found better answers online and thank God he is like a puppy again and has been for many months since I went to this place. I hope I can deter someone else from going here in their time of need, it was a nightmare experience for me from beginning to end. (BTW if you read through the reviews and see some of the responses, the owner in one place argues she can't give out private information, then in many other places, she gives out tons of details, including names and treatments) I found this same integrity issue when I asked questions and didn't get real answers. When I spoke with the owner on the phone after bringing my dog home, she hung up on me when I asked a question. That was my last contact with her. Unprofessional, incompetent and I sensed no compassion for the animals. If your animal was saved here, it was probably a coincidence or a very simple issue. Read Less

I took my cat here because she came home late one night with her leg ripped open/bleeding. My veterinarian was closed already, so I had to look up the closest 24/7 clinic and go. This hospital took $3,000 from me over the course of 2 extremely stressful and emotional weeks. They were just doing bandage changes and cleanings on my cat's leg (she needed wet to dry bandages) and changing every 2 days. At the end, they told me that I had to either amputate her entire leg for an additional cost of $2,500 or I could "try" a different treatment for $5,000 for only 1 week and if it failed then I would need to pay another $2,500 anyway to amputate. Since I already was $3,000 deep, I couldn't afford to do $5,000 more. I left my baby there for the amputation and went home crying and stressed out about her losing her leg. I ended up calling back to cancel the surgery so I could have more time, and I desperately emailed my primary vet about the situation. I brought my cat in to her office the next morning, and she ended up caring for her ($50 bandage changes only, compared to this hospital's $300 or more charge per visit). She also told me if she failed, her amputation was only $500........ 1/5 the price of this hospital.I am EXTREMELY upset about the care my cat received here. If I trusted them fully, my cat would not have a leg right now. And I would have paid almost $6,000 for her to be left amputated....... She is running around now and her leg is almost as good as new. No thanks at all to this place. I would recommend trying to go anywhere else. They are outrageously priced and seem to care more about getting your money than giving your pet the best life possible. ***WARNING: DO NOT BRING YOUR PETS HERE*** I understand that it's extremely difficult to find emergency care for your pets, especially in the South Bay, but unless it is truly a medical EMERGENCY that requires IMMEDIATE attention, AVOID THIS PLACE. The staff here (SPECIFICALLY DR. BONNIE WERNER) will try to unethically pressure and con you in to thinking your pet has to undergo UNNECESSARY surgery for the sake of making $$$. This is not a rant about how much this hospital charges or how incredibly slow the staff is at moving the appointment process along (I will let other reviewers speak to that) - this is to communicate to all readers that the staff here is concerned more about making $$$ than the optimal well-being of your pet. I brought my dog here because I had been referred here by my primary veterinarian - he had been throwing up and acting a little lethargic but nothing too unusual. Long story short, we did all the blood tests and the conclusion was he needed gallbladder surgery. Dr. Werner and her assistant even said to us that he only had a few months before his gallbladder ruptured, and if that happened, we would be facing a whole bigger problem, and might even have to consider putting our dog down. Of course, this being an extremely big decision, we wanted time to think about this (we couldn't imagine having our little pup have his little belly ripped open with a knife). We first thought it was a little weird when they kept calling us after our appointment asking when we'd like to make an appointment for the surgery, and they even called us to say that they had an opening immediately in a few days and that we should act QUICK. Something felt a little off so we decided to go to a much larger hospital in West Los Angeles. We ran the same exact tests and the ultrasound and lo and behold, the results turned out quite different. They provided us with all the results from a 3rd party radiology reading department to assure they can't have forged the results. Long story short: NO INDICATION FOR SURGERY WHATSOEVER. In fact, my dog was totally fine and just needed a little big of a diet change!! I've asked for the ultrasound reports from Animal Emergency Medical Center so I could compare the two results and they have failed to provide them to me, citing that it was too long ago and that "radiology" seems to have misplaced them. If you really care about your pet, don't bring them here. Read Less

Dr. Leeds and his team preformed a very complicated surgery on my little Chihuahua Cali last week.  She is already feeling better and the before and after ex-rays showed truly exceptional work!!!I'm not generally inclined to write Yelp reviews to be honest.  However before making my way to Surgical Group I went to 5 other vets including the emergency room the night of her accident.  I had 3 Orthopedic Surgeons decline to preform the procedure due to its complication, 1 that would do it however they wanted $6,800 and another offer to amputate her leg.  Ridiculous and heartbreaking. Those prior vet visits cost about $500 for the appointments and forced me to drive around with my dog, without a cast, and with a broken and dislocated leg.  Only to be repeatedly poked, prodded and sent on our way.So I'm writing this in hopes that it will help you to save your pet pain, you time, money and help in making the right choice.  Not only did Dr. Leeds do and Exceptional Job, his rates where reasonable and his staff is Truly Amazing!  I felt really good leaving my pup in their hands.  So PLEASE go here.  They deserve the business and you will get the best care possible. I brought my boxer mix in for her swollen leg.  My vet wanted to rule out a mass causing it to become red, and swollen.  She had a fever and she wasn't eating and drinking.  On a Friday night, this was the only place that could perform a soft tissue ultrasound.  After the vet examined her, they wanted her hospitalized for iv antibiotics, ultrasound of leg and abdomen, blood work, fluids, hyperbaric oxygen treatments, ect.  I really didn't want her to stay there but I felt like I had no choice but to.  Total bill for 4 days was $7600.  And by the time of discharge she was much better, but they wanted to continue hyperbaric oxygen and antibiotics.  Total bill was around 9k.  I am grateful for such a great recovery but I have reasons I would not return here nor recommend this place. 1.  A month later the symptoms returned.  I went to my regular vet who aspirated her lymph nodes and diagnosed her with mast cell tumors, for which the treatment was antihistamines and steroids.  Which is what we expected all along.  Which was not diagnosed at the emergency vet.  Somehow they missed this on the ultrasound?2.  Astronomically high prices.  I mean ouch.  I never realized that animal care could cost this much.3.  Long wait times for every visit.   I visited my girl while she was hospitalized, plus had to bring her back multiple times for hyperbaric oxygen treatments and had to wait about 30 min prior to service each time.4.  When my dog was admitted I was told I would receive a call from a vet everyday.  This didn't occur.  Had to request to see a vet when I visited, plus had to wait a while to see one.  Got a call Monday after complaining to reception that I wasn't receiving calls.  Oftentimes I was put on hold for a long time when calling to request information.  Just overall poor customer service.5.  When going to see her she had caked feces on her fur.  Poor girl.  I realize she probably had diarrhea because of the antibiotics, but come on.  6.  Every time I visited I took her outside, where she urinated for about a minute.  Seems like they don't really take them out to use the restroom.Overall I honestly can't say the treatment was that great here.  I think the hyperbaric oxygen was probably helpful, but since there was a misdiagnosis she just relapsed anyway.  Not cool for $9,000. My experience was that the doctor stormed out and said I wasn't paying attention because I had to take a call from the dogs owner during her explanation, right before taking the call I stated that I had to take the call as it was my roommate (the dog owner) and she was in another country and i wanted to find out if he dog had any medical issues they should know about since they had asked me.The dog ended up being okay, and yeah, obviously its rude in normal circumstances to take a call when someones talking to you but, this call was necessary to provide the doctor with the information they were asking from me. It was a stressful situation, made more stressful by the doctor's behavior. Read Less

Horrible experience! I paid my regular vet for an initial exam for possible obstruction in nasal area of my kitten, Toby. My vet called to get a rough estimate for a nasal scope (rhinoscopy) and was told $750.00. I went to AEMC to get confirmation on the quote and was told by the doctor herself there would be no charge for an exam and they would break down various costs for me so I could choose the options I wanted or could afford. The assistant came back with a flat quote of $1,800+ (no breakdown). I tried to get the breakdown as promised but got a lot of backlash from the assistant. I walked out and they sent me a bill for $95.00. The vet tells you one thing, and the assistant another. They don't keep their word. They say "we care about your pet", but everything about the vet and the vet assistant screams "our priority is getting your money". I don't trust they would take care of Toby (my kitten) properly, and would continuously add costs, using one excuse or another. Love your animal enough to stay away from this place. Read Less

Not a fan. We took our sick puppy here to receive care. The initial estimate was very high, but we were stuck because this was the only place open 24 hours......our normal vet wasn't open. The vet gave us an estimate of more than $3000 with a 50/50 chance of surviving. We went home and (tearfully) discussed the situation and came to the difficult decision that it would be better to let the puppy go than to have him spend the next few days in pain and all alone in a little box.The next day we went back to discuss our decision with the vet. The vet seemed to have forgotten the initial 50/50 prognosis and "encouraged" us to continue the treatment. She insisted that she would keep us informed of the progress......or lack of progress. After being convinced to continue treatment, we never received any phone calls or updates.Once our wallet was emptied of the initial $3000+ we got the ONE and ONLY call from one of the assistants saying we should really consider putting our puppy down. There were no updates and seemingly no real concern (based on the lack of communication) for the well-being of our puppy. Even our primary vet (who wasn't open during that time) called us to see how the puppy was doing. All we got from this place was a massive bill and a broken heart.I'm sad my puppy spent his last few days there. Needless to say, we won't be returning. I understand that treating sick animals isn't a guarantee, but like others who have posted reviews, I felt like they were more interested in our money than treating our pet. Read Less

I didn't actually go in for a visit, this review is for phone etiquette/professionalism ONLY. Some background: 3-1/2 weeks ago, my dog started limping out of nowhere. I went to one vet, was then referred to another, and was FINALLY referred to a surgical center where it was determined that my dog tore his ACL and needs surgery. I was quoted a very high price for surgery so I started to call around to the other 10 surgical centers that my vet recommended to see if the cost was about the same everywhere. I get it, doctors can't give an exact quote without examining my dog, running some tests, etc etc... I just wanted to know ROUGHLY am I looking at around $5,000 (like I was quoted) or are there options for $2-3,000? (For a difference of $1,000+ I will drive to wherever I need to drive to and pay for a 4th exam!) I called all of the surgical centers on my referral list and had to deal with a lot of rude/unhelpful people. I appreciate the person at Surgical Group For Animals who took my call, listened, and provided helpful feedback! She said she would speak to the vet and have him call me as soon as he was available. I wasn't really expecting a call back (because I have NEVER received a call back from a doctor in my life) so I was delighted when I heard back from him an hour later! The Doc was incredibly kind, very informative, and a huge help. He also explained some of what is included with the cost of surgery at his office (free follow up visits, which include 3 X-rays... Just as one example) and I think his price is great for what he includes! I wish this office was a bit closer to my house, I would have gone with this Doc for sure. THANK YOU to the entire team at Surgical Group For Animals for taking the time to really listen and assist someone who isn't even a paying customer! Read Less

Lets start off by saying I am particular. My dog hurt his rear toe four weeks ago after catching it in a fence in a full run. My vet at the time did not see the need for xrays, putting him on anti-inflammatory meds. Moving forward three weeks (my vet quits unannounced), I asked the replacement vet for an xray. Broken toe, healing somewhat crooked. Needless to say, my attitude was pretty poor and angry by then.  I went to a different vet office for another opinion. I still wasn't quite sure what to do since my dog is extremely athletic and i wanted to be sure the toe was healing to the point of him being 100% again. It was a weight bearing toe so I didn't want him to lose it. Asking around, I made an appointment with Dr. Leeds because I wanted an ortho to look at him. I got my first impression when he poked his head in the waiting room to take a look at my dog. I could tell he was a kind man. In the exam room, he remained kind, was interested in my dog, asked alot of questions, took him outside in the parking lot so he could watch him move, returned to the exam room and asked more questions and then told me the restrictions he wanted me to continue with my dog. If you are worried about your dog or pet, if you want good advice from a doctor who will care about your  pet, if you want a conservative doctor who will take the time for your pet to heal properly, then I recommend you pay a visit to Dr. Leeds. For the first time in four weeks, I am not worried. Read Less

Zero stars are not an option... Please drive 15, 20, 30 minutes away from the South Bay to find a better emergency hospital DO NOT GO TO THIS HOSPITAL!! I took in my dog in because he was having seizures around 9am. They check him and give him anti seizure meds and tell me to leave him and to get on my way. The first thing they ask is how will I pay and then they hit me with a $1600 estimate. I said fine just take care of my dog and keep him alive. I keep calling back most of the day and nothing... All is good according to the receptionist. I go visit him around 7pm and they claim he had a seizure 30 minutes before we showed and more med was given. Mornings of the next day the vet calls me and tells me they need to do an ultrasound and will be an additional 400. I said fine go ahead all I want is for my dog to be okay. I keep calling to get results and nothing. Then about 8 hours after the supposed ultrasound, they say we can pick him up. When picking him up I ask for the results or any conclusions and nothing. They told me to talk to my vet about his issues and they will be able to give me more information. At the end they charged us around $2300. The only thing we got of this ordeal was a little bit of anti-seizure med and a lot of misleading information for additional testing.Read Less

I have to add my two cents although I was a witness and am happy for that. I say that because I would not take a cockroach into this clinic to be seen by anyone. I am the owner of a cat and a dog and I am floored at what I witnessed happen to my boyfriend's cat over the weekend. It seems this clinic is more interested in your ability to pay than the animal. He took his cat in on Friday because he has a blockage and has not been able to urinate or deficate and immediately they began talking money, my boyfriend is fully capapable of paying whatever is needed to keep his animals alive but this was not the issue. He immediately accepted the package they quoted with an itemized list of what tests would be needed for his cat and was all set, but on Saturday he receives a call from the clinic saying his cat needed to stay in there hospital until Wednesday (he would need to be there 5 days as his kidneys were failing and this would more than likely cost him well over 3,000), fine keep the cat alive is all he cares about. Now keep in mind his original cost was 1,100 the original quote for the cat only needing to be housed there til Sunday. The new charges he was told would be itemized so they could come up with how everything went from 1,100 to 3,000. Sunday he gets a call at 9 in the evening that his cat was fine. They were removing his catheter, taking him off fluids and sending him home. No he had not yet used the bathroom. So his cat still from Friday night had no used the bathroom but because he was acting scared and unruly they felt he would recover better at home so they were sending him home per the original quote of 1,100 okay fine, although pissed that they did nothing for the cat. We arrive at the clinic to pick up the cat and the receptionist/intake nurse is on the phone disputing charges with yet another customer, finally gets off the phone and we let her know we are there to pick up the cat. Without much discussion she whips out papers informing my boyfriend the charges were going to be the 2,089. He is okay with that he just wanted an itemized list to show what had changed in the charges because apparently nothing had been done for the cat and surely sending him home with meds and new food did not cost the additional $900. Not one person in this hospital could explain this to him. They pretty much held the cat hostage until he paid. My observation in this was the intake nurse/receptionist actually walked out of the room and slammed the door she was so pissed he would not just sign the papers until they could explain why they cannot show him why he is paying an additional $900. Do you know they admitted they did not know and was not able to contact anyone who could, she attempted to turn on the computer for which she finally admitted was not working. Of course he eventually paid what he has no idea he paid for because they would not bring him his cat. I am already shocked at the way this place was a cash and carry/hurry up and buy type of establishment but the lack of professionalism was too much for words. Between the lady slamming the door (she apologized when I pointed out to her that given the situaion her actions were not appropriate regardless of whether the customer was being difficult), and the dr rolling her eyes to the ceiling as she walked out not realized I saw her was just sad and disheartening. I really believed people who worked with animals actually cared about the animal. We spent our night last night trying desperately to get this cat to pee. Finally I rubbed his belly and he peed on the floor but he still is not able to use the bathroom on his own. His backside is vibrating and he is in visible pain. So the hospital might be able to actually fix that computer they could not seem to get to work however we are in need of a vet hospital that will actually give us answers on how to help this cat. I brought my dog in and he seemed to deteriorate day by day in their care. (BTW if you read through the reviews on yelp and see some of the responses, the owner in one place argues she can't give out private information, then in many other places, she gives out tons of details, including names and treatments) I found this same integrity issue when I asked questions and didn't get real answers. When I spoke with the owner on the phone after bringing my dog home, she hung up on me when I asked a question. That was my last contact with her. Unprofessional, incompetent and I sensed no compassion for the animals. If your animal was saved here, it was probably a coincidence or a very simple issue. Read Less

I recently took my cat here when we found a huge bump on this chin late Saturday night and they were able to see him right away. We came around 8 pm and I think only one vet, one nurse, and one receptionist were on duty. Just to see the vet there is an initial fee of $85. Then they charged $35 to poke a needle in my cats bump to determine if it was an abscess and if it wasn€t then they would charge another $45 to look at the sample under a microscope. Once we agreed to these charges they came back telling us a it was an abscess and they provided another list of charges to actually perform work on our cat. The total said $750 - $850 which included the charges I mentioned before. We agreed and they took out a deposit of $750. We told them we wanted to pick him up when he as soon as he was ready no matter the time and they warned us our cat€s problem wasn€t an emergency so it might be awhile. They called around 4 am telling us the surgery was a success and we can come in an hour. Once we got there they informed us the procedure wasn€t as complicated as they had thought it would be so they will refund $160, however when the check came in the mail it was only for $77. I'm guessing the difference is the medication they gave me which they did say would be a whole other charge. Overall the experience was a good, albeit expensive, one and I€m relieved to have a 24 hour emergency pet clinic so close to us. Read Less

Initially, I took my dog to another vet earlier in the day but around 3AM he began breathing rapidly, so I panicked and took him to the closest 24 hour clinic which just happened to be this one. The lady working at the front desk (I'm guessing the vet assistant) was very kind and she took my dog to be oxygenated right away. She told me that he was breathing a lot better inside of the oxygen chamber and that the doctor would meet with me and my mom shortly. When we first met Dr. Alexis Kotelko, she was very kind and seemed very concerned and knowledgable about my dog's condition and welfare. She stated what could be wrong and what treatments he might need, and then told us that she would be back with an estimate. The vet assistant brought us our estimated which came out to 2250.10-2894.53 for 24-48 hospitalization!!!! At the bottom it said miscellaneous medical service with an estimate of 171.82-257.73, so we asked what it was and their response was very vague which made us feel uneasy. We declined the estimated treatments and asked if we could just keep him oxygenated until 9AM which was only 4 hours considering it was already 5AM. After we declined, Dr. Kotelko stormed in with a bad attitude and made it sound like my dog was going to die if we didn't accept and pay for all the treatments that they felt were necessary. She said that the oxygen chamber is going to help him breath but he's in terrible condition and is only getting worse. Her tone was very rude and her attitude was horrible. She was nice to begin with but now I feel like that was all fake. When we said we only wanted him oxygenated until the morning, she said alright and stormed out of the room. It definitely made us feel nervous and worried to leave our baby with them after that encounter. Lastly, we ended up paying $218.35 to keep him oxygenated for a little under 5 hours. They said the minimum charge was 218.35 for 6 hours and at most $392.34 if the time exceeded 6 hours. The $218.35 had $85.91 of Miscellaneous medical service included, which they said would only be necessary if he fell in critical condition. He didn't end up needing these "miscellaneous medical services" and I feel like the $85.91 should have been a refundable deposit in case of an emergency. When we got him back, he was dehydrated, weak, and scared. I don't think they even thought to feed him some water AND on our way out, another doctor stopped us and said that we still needed to pay more. She said we only paid a deposit and that we owed more. She was a bit rude and I almost felt like I was about to argue with her. We told her that we paid in full the $218.35, so she went to the back to check and turns out she had been misinformed and sent us on our way. I'm extremely disappointed, irritated, and angry with this place. We will not be coming here again. He is now at a much better emergency clinic. Read Less

Took my 10 yr old Rottie in with torn ACL, recommended by my vet.  Got an appt. the next day with Dr. Leeds and surgery 1 week later.  The whole process was great, from the caring receptionists to Dr. Leeds and especially Dr. Jenkins.  Met with Dr. Leeds for the initial consultation and he did the surgery, but talked with Dr. Jenkins on the phone and met with her at pick up time.  She took plenty of time to discuss what happened during the surgery and answered all questions without rushing us. I was told and truly felt that I could call anytime to see how he was doing (and I did) and that it would not be a bother to anyone there.  I feel that they truly care and know how we feel about our beloved pet.  I got the CareCredit payment plan that they offer which will help in making monthly payments.  But when it comes to our pet, the question is "when can you do it?" not " how much is it?"  He may have to have the other leg done in the future, so I did ask about a discount for #2, which they said could be offered. But Dr. Jenkins also told us not to feel guilty if we could not afford a 2nd one; we have given him this one really strong leg that will probably get him through his life. It was a very thoughtful thing for her to say, and we appreciated it very much.  But we'd do it anyway!  Overall, we feel we got the best from all involved in his care and thank everyone and would highly recommend this office. If you ever need a great surgeon for your dog than this is THE PLACE in los Angeles county. My little dog jojo had broken leg in a very bad way that had us wondering how that happen. Im talking just above the knee in his left rear leg.So me and my wife start searching for the best surgeon in los Angeles and after 3 consultation (which 2 of them recommended dr` leeds) that cost us almost $500 we got price ranges from $2k -$5k .but all of them just include the surgery , which left us knowing that the healing process is the most expensive one , which you need check ups , x rays,  shots , medications etc'. So as last stop we decided to go and see surgical group for animals and after talking to doctor Jenkins which was thoroughly  and helpful we decided to go with them, bear in mind we paid in the mid range of what we quoted for, BUT with everything included after which makes this place the lowest one for overall scope of work.To sum this up the staff, is the most friendly , helpful people I ever came across . From Vanessa,Melanie , Dr leeds who he`s a top notch in what he does,  Dr Jenkins and the rest of them .Bringing  your dog to them and knowing its the best place for him in L.A. county. Read Less

My pitbull terrier puppy was diagnosed with hip dysplasia and he tore both his ACLs. He was too young for surgery at the time, so Dr. Leeds gave us a non-surgical option called shockwave therapy. It's non-invasive and was able to treat both the torn ACLs and the hip dysplasia. To this day, the hip dysplasia still hasn't progressed and he's now three years old.The ACLs needed surgery eventually, and I returned to Dr. Leeds. Although the recovery time was tedious and stressful, Dr. Leeds and Dr. Jenkins walked me through the entire process and now my dog is better than he was as a puppy.I'm extremely grateful to Dr. Leeds, Dr. Jenkins and the entire SGFA staff for all their support and knowledge. Dr. Leeds can be intimidating and very straight-forward, but I appreciated that in the end since I knew he always had my pet's best interest at heart. Dr. Leeds and Dr. Jenkins are absolutely both great surgeons and compassionate animal lovers. My 11 year old Lab mix had to undergo a TPLO surgery and Dr. Leeds was highly recommended by my vet, Dr. Stephen Fynhaardt (also very good). The entire staff have been so sweet and caring towards my dog. It's making the whole process so much easier since my dog loves all of them. They may not be the cheapest, but they are definitely the best. I am still taking my dog for follow up visits and have nothing but high hopes for her. After just 1 week, my dog is already bearing some weight on her bad leg. I can tell that she's so much happier and has so much energy. Apparently my dog was very scared and upset when she woke up after surgery. Dr. Jenkins was kind enough to stay with her personally and console her until she was calm and at ease. I'm so fortunate that she was caring enough to do this for my ever so sensitive dog. Trust me....other hospitals wouldn't have given her this kind of care and compassion. Many hospitals have uncaring staff who only seem to care about their paycheck. I'm so glad that I discovered SGFA since they are the complete opposite. If your dog ever needs surgery, please see either Dr. Leeds or Dr. Jenkins...both are excellent doctors. They are definitely the best at what they do and really care about your dog. From a very satisfied client, please know that your pet will be taken care of in every way from the entire staff....especially Dr. Leeds and Dr. Jenkins.***they are the absolute best and I would not even consider going anywhere else if my dog needs any other sort of surgery. Surgical Group for Animals is beyond AMAZING!My ABPT was diagnosed with hip dysplasia and our regualr vet suggested we put him down, obvisouly I refused so he recommend us to SGfA.  We went and met with Dr. Leeds and he read the x-rays and said it wasn't the worst case he'd seen and gave us 2 options: sound wave therapy or FHO surgery. We opted for the surgery but since my husbnad and I just graduated we were tight on funds.  Dr. Leeds and Dr. Jenkins as well as Frank were all so wonderful.  Dr. Jenkins performed the surgery and did all the post-op check up's.  The office worked with our financial situation (and we were luckily enough to have people donate to Jackson's surgery!) and Jack loved everyone in the office.I hope I never ever have to go thorough a surgery again wiht my dog or any other, but if I did I would absolutely go to Surgical Group for Animals. Thanks guys, you are the BEST! Read Less

In 42 years of pet ownership have I never felt the need to apologize to my animal for taking him to the vet. Unless you are nearby and your pet is on the brink of death... BEWARE!!!! Read Less
