I came in here today with a dog new to a local rescue. He'd been a stray and needed an initial physical exam and I also felt like x-rays of his pelvic limbs were warranted given his pain on manipulation of both hips. I did like that they take walk-in appointments, but I wasn't happy about anything else about this visit (with the exception of the very nice lady at the front desk, but we honestly didn't have much interaction). I saw Dr. Alexander and was immediately put off when she began talking to me like I was a four year old who had never owned a dog before. I I tried politely explain that I'm a technician and I've worked at animal hospitals for over a decade, specifically in surgery and internal medicine, which is my most recent specialty (I opened the department several years ago at the current hospital). She still insisted on talking to me like I was a child so I just let her speak, but I noticed that her physical exam was the most limited physical exam I've ever seen. She checked absolutely not a single thing on the face to include the ears, eyes, nose, or anything in the mouth or throat. She didn't palpate the abdomen, she didn't perform a rectal exam exam, and I even asked if she would like me to lay him down so she can examine certain joints and she said no. She bent one elbow and both knees, but didn't at all manipulate the hips despite the fact that I said that he seems like he's in a lot of pain specifically in those joints. I also said he has a right forelimb limp which is intermittent, and she bent his elbow once but didn't bother at all with the shoulder. I was surprised by this but I was cautious about asking her to do anything more than casually manipulate the couple joints that she did because she was already talking to me like I was a child and it was not only insulting, but obnoxious. I understand I'm not a veterinarian, but that's why I came to you! This dog desperately needed a full physical after spending what we believe is his entire life on the streets, and we got almost nothing. I performed a more thorough and professional physical when the dog first came to my home just a few days ago, but that's neither here nor there I guess.I even reminded her radiographs of the pelvic limbs couldn't hurt because there was obvious pain in both hips and she said the only way they would go forward with x-rays is if they sedated him with Ketamine and Valium. This is a geriatric dog, very easily about eight years old, we have no prior blood work, and I even explained that his neutering caused him to be overly sedated for the entire remainder of the day using similar medications. She said they won't do the x-rays without that, to which I replied I thought that was an aggressive sedation protocol for an animal that doesn't really need to be sedated for x-rays. I'll take him to the hospital I work out for that where we only sedate animals if it's 100% necessary.I then explained that we also didn't have any blood work on him yet, so a senior panel would probably be a good idea. She then explained to me what blood work was and what it measured. I tried to yet again go over the fact that I'm a technician and I've probably read those panels, and pulled for those panels, longer than she's been a veterinarian. But I didn't want to be disrespectful so I didn't say that, and I again let her talk to me like a child. I asked her to go ahead with the blood work, he's an older dog with no prior medical examinations or diagnostics and we'd like to make sure he's as happy and healthy as possible before we try to find him home as a rescue. She just nodded her head and took the dog and that was the end of our interaction. She didn't tell me when I would get those results, she never came back in the room, anything. I had to ask at the front desk what their protocol for that was. And instead of them calling me when they get the results, I have to call in starting at 9 a.m. tomorrow to see when they have them and if everything was normal.I'm surprised at the lack of care here, but maybe not. When I got out of the office, I called somebody who is much more familiar with this office than I am and this person had the exact same opinion about Dr. Alexander. She's condescending and talks to you like a child, and is the most incomplete, unthorough person I've ever dealt with in a veterinary capacity.I honestly would have preferred Dr. Rios, but I understand that as a walk-in appointment, they do randomly assign the doctors. That having been said, in one trip, this doctor ruined my experience on this hospital and I'd rather pay three times the cost to go somewhere else if it means I feel like there's a higher level of professionalism and the simple diagnostics such as a physical exam are performed in a more thorough capacity. On a smaller note, the prices we're ridiculous, the waiting room is tiny, and getting out of this parking lot is obnoxious.
