Today I experienced Valley Oak Veternary hospital’s client loyalty/appreciation, or lack of it, I should say, once again . After many many years of caring for my dogs, rather than offer me the same price as one of their competitors to put my dog to rest, they basically said ‘good, go somewhere else’ when I called to let them know that rather than pay their price of $176, I had found another local vet and receiving same service for $125! Goodbye Dr. Thornberg and Valley Oak Veterinary Hospital forever! You’be made it clear to me many times that you don’ Care if I stay or go. Read Less

I have to give kudos to Dr Rich and his staff. I brought in my very sick kitty- Skye into him this morning and took my cat immediately in the office, was wonderful about everything. And even though Skye needed an emergency surgery and needed to stay, Dr Rich called me to let me know that everything went well after he was done. And even though Skye is not home yet, I know he is in excellent hands. His staff is the best. I have taken a couple of my other cats over there a few times and I've always had a positive experience. Just horrible. My family has been taking out animals here for over 20 years. But we won't be returning. My mom went in to put our family cat down today because he is 14 years old. He no longer goes to the bathroom in his litter box, he forgets where things are, and going a little crazy. The doctor spend 2 minutes at most with him and said no he's fine, you just want him out of your live because he's an inconvenience. What kind of person does that. You aren't there to see how sad it is. Then to make a person feel terrible, who already is in pain for losing a pet, because you don't think it's the right decision. I will be making sure to let everyone I know about this. It's no ok. Read Less

Love them, and have since Dr. Weiss was still there. I know Dr. W waited to retire a couple of extra years because he was hesitant to sell his practice to anyone less than stellar (like himself) and he did his business a service with Dr Thornburg. I have an old, @$$hole of a dog (but she's my baby) who wants to eat other people's dogs, and they are always super cool about scheduling her accordingly so there are no brawls in the waiting room. I began taking my pets to Valley Oak when a certain vet in town (who shall remain nameless) YELLED at me because he had scared my dog with his awful kennel-side manner, and she peed on his shiny leather shoe. He screeched at me that "next time" (yeah right) I better sedate my dog before I bring her for a toenail trim. Took her into Valley Oak and *snip snip*, no issues at all! Also, a few years back, I had to put my cat down. He could have pushed for certain procedures that would have cost me about $1,800, but he said there was a slim chance it would work, and a 99% chance it would reoccur, and in the meantime the cat would be miserable. When I went online to research the issue and make my decision, I found a slew of people who had been pushed into the procedure he spoke of and basically taken for their $ with zero good results. They could have said anything and had me go through with it, but they were honest. I appreciate honesty, especially when it comes to my money amd my fur children! I'll never take my critters to anyone else. Read Less

My cat cotton got his tail cut at the very end and we had to take him into the vet. I was treated wonderfully the moment I entered the office, the staff told me it would be awhile but got us in sooner than expected. After the vet came in she talked to us and we informed her I did not have a lot of money. She took him back and he had to have his tale shaved and get seven staples. She was amazing and so kind ( it was obvious how much she cared for animals ) she did everything as low cost as possible while doing a wonderful job! The emergency visit , shaving a tail and seven staples, two medications, and a e-collar came out to under 200 dollars. I had an amazing experience here and am so thankful for everything they did! I have been taking my pets to Valley Oak Vet for years.  I had concerns when Dr. Weiss sold the practice to Dr. Richard Thornburgh and his wife, Donna, but my experience since the changeover has been totally positive.  Dr. Thornburgh and his clinic staff have an absolute commitment to all of my pets (present census: 6 dogs and 11 cats):  we have gone through both happy and sad times together.  He appreciates the cost of vet treatment and always starts with the lower cost options, upgrading as we work our way through diagnosis and treatment.  He departs from higher cost protocols when there are alternative, less costly options.  He listens to his clients.  He reaches out to contact his clients  to engage in conversation.  He is always willing to discuss treatment issues, quality of life concerns, etc.  He recognizes issues that require equipment beyond what he has in house, and sends us to UCD vet school when needed:  he also has brought in surgery specialists on some of the cases we have dealt with together.  Although Valley Oak has the highest quality staff and equipment, it is not showcased in expensive premises, which saves him, and thus his clients, money. And, Dr. Thornburgh and his staff value and treasure animals.  It is clear to me that he is not in business just "for the money" but for the satisfaction and joy of helping and saving animals.  Woodland and north Yolo County are fortunate to have a veterinarian of his quality and character. The male doctor at this location examined my constipated cat and his one and "only' recommendation was that my cat needed to get an x-ray.  I have had two cats in the past who had constipation and my previous veterinary doctor (located outside of Woodland area) offered me no less that three different choices (laxatives, enema and / or dietary foods).  If the cat's condition remained the same or became worse; then the choice for an x-ray would've been advised by my previous doctor.  This male doctor at Valley Oak (who himself, looks in desperate need of medical attention), went straight for the money by insisting my cat needs nothing less than an x-ray.  When I declined and asked if I could pay just for the examination, this male doctor storms out of the examination room like a 5 year old and leaves my cat in the caged area / waiting room.  I personally had to walk into the caged area to ask an employee for my cat back.  I hate to say it, but sometimes small towns equal small minds and this doctor truly fulfills that saying.
