Woodland Veterinary Hospital

Woodland, California
General Info
In addition to the hours listed above, Woodland Veterinary Hospital is also open Monday-Friday 8am-9pm, Saturday 8am-6pm, and Sunday 9am-6pm for Emergency Services.
Woodland Veterinary Hospital was founded in 1975 in a converted house on the outskirts of town. The new hospital was built in 2000, just to the north of that first location, and included a large medical facility and boarding kennel. To meet the demand for boarding, and to provide indoor and outdoor spaces for dog training classes, the building was expanded in 2005. Measuring 11,000 square feet, the hospital is designed to offer one-stop convenience for pet care.
Woodland Veterinary Hospital was owned and managed by Dr. Bruce Dennie from 1996 until 2012, when Drs. Ellie Johnson and Keith Rode joined him as an ownership team. Our hospital staff includes five highly skilled veterinarians and a support staff of approximately 35 caring, compassionate veterinary professionals. We are very proud of our facility, our staff, our focus on patient care, our full complement of services, and the role we play in our community.
Woodland Veterinary Hospital is a full service veterinary hospital that provides a wide range of comprehensive medical, dental, diagnostic and surgical services. Our patients include everything from dogs and cats to pocket pets, and even the occasional reptile. In addition to our veterinary medical services, we also offer top-notch boarding, grooming, and obedience training to enhance the relationships our patients enjoy with their loving owners.
In 2008, WVH was awarded the Meritorious Service Award by the California Veterinary Medical Association in recognition of our efforts to promote the human-animal bond through our unique educational services. We have a passion for facilitating not only pet health but also healthy relationships between people and pets. We understand that your animal companion is more than just a pet – they’re a part of the family, and we strive to further nurture that bond in any way we can. Our goal is to become your trusted partner in all of your pet’s health care needs and we look forward to welcoming you to our office soon!

We have taken our pets here for years and I have had no complaints. I’ve also never had any serious issues with my pets. Two weeks ago my dog started acting funny was having trouble getting up and moving around. I took her into the vet and they thought she had possibly a back problem or a disc problem and they prescribed her some pain medication and an anti-inflammatory. The next day she wasn’t any better and I called back and was told to wait a few more days for the pain m...eds to take affect. The following Saturday she still wasn’t any better so I made her an appointment, brought her in, they were going to sedate her and do an x-ray but the vet called me and said he had done some manipulation with her and she didn’t seem to be in any pain at all he didn’t think an x-ray was warranted. He prescribed additional pain medications and an antibiotic because she had a low-grade fever. By the following week on Tuesday she wasn’t any better she now has stopped eating. I called on Wednesday morning and the earliest appointment they could give me was Thursday morning. Didn’t seem to be any sense of urgency at all. By Wednesday evening I had her in the emergency at UC Davis vet hospital, she was literally bleeding to death. She had multiple tumors that were discovered by ultrasound which Woodland Vet Hospital never did. And her abdomen was filling with blood faster than her heart could pump it out. We had no choice but to put her down. I am not saying the outcome would have been different but I feel there was negligence on the part of Woodland Vet Hospital to properly diagnose my dog. Tons of medication without any testing at all. At least if testing had been done she may not have had to suffer as long as she did. RIP sweet pup. See More Read Less

Came here in January for the 1st time. Our dog of 14years had a strange cough and her shape in her belly began to change. We rushed her in since they were the closes to us. The Vet heard a heart murmur and we ended up finding that she was retaining fluids -- so bad that we couldn't see anything on the x-ray taken. We made a very hard decision to have to say goodbye to our beloved fur baby. They staff was very patient and compassionate. They allowed us as much time as we needed. They shared in our grief and was very professional at the same time. We have not yet brought a new animal into our life but when we do, we will be coming here. Read Less

i meant to leave this review years ago but I do want to leave one now. The staff at Woodland Veterinary Hospital saved my dog's life a few years ago and I am forever grateful for their professionalism and love for animals. My dog was very close to being put down because she was attacked by unfixed german shepherds in the area we lived (i will leave it at that) our friend immediately took her here and we spent hours waiting for them to give us good news. They were able to stitch her back together and they were so amazing! Though it was a huge bill, their service was priceless. I love this vet hospital for the pure fact that my dog was always excited about seeing all the vet techs. She received so much attention and gave the staff her love which I know is a great place to work when the staff is super friendly with the animals. Great place! My friend brings his dog here still, I just wished we didn't move so far away! Read Less

BE AWARE i left a review along time ago for this business.I just happened to look on yelp that one of the 2 reviews i have ever given has been removed so im going to repost something similar to what i originally had.I took my dog of 18 years to this place to unfortunately be put down the dog in my picture. They ran test said they might be able to save him and keep him around a little longer. He said something about a 20% chance they would have to keep him at the vet and i did not want my dog thinking i abandoned him in the end. I sat with my dog for what felt like hours just crying. the vet came in and put him down. i wanted his ashes i spent a ridiculous amount to keep his ashes and for a pine box to hold them. several weeks pass i call looking for the ashes. the women on the phone gave me the run around and says they will call me back soon. 3 days later i call upset. they tell me that there was a mess up and they sent my dog in with the group cremation. I loved this dog with everything i had i got him as a gift as a child and when they told me that I absolutely lost it. i kept telling them I wanted ever cent i spent at that place returned and they kept saying no. eventually i devolved into me just yelling, a family member of mine grabbed the phone and informed them if they didn't make this right we would be taking them to court on principles we didn't care if it cost us 5 times what i paid that day they were going to make it right. this happened a long time ago maybe there staffing has gotten better but i will keep posting something like this every time it gets removed. It was not ok what their staff did and it was not ok how they tried to go about easing the situation. they made a really difficult time in my life that much harder. it's customer service at the end of they day and they did me a HUGE DISSERVICE and tried to do the absolutely bare minimum to help the situation. don't let the yelp rating fool you i let it fool me at the time and it cost me closure with that dog i couldn't send him out the way i planned or wanted and it still clearly eats at me. its long and not well written but hopefully this save someone some future unnecessary heart ach. Very sad and disappointed with this business. I've been taking my dogs there for six years and have excellent credit with them. My dog is very sick and I tried to make an urgent appt. I explained to them that I don't get my check until Monday, would they take a post-dated check--no. I then arranged an emergency transfer from my savings, but explained that the $$ wouldn't be in until tonight. They continued to say they needed payment at the time of service. The office manager proceeded to tell me that dishonoured checks are sent to the District Attorney--thank you, just what I needed to hear when my dog is sick and I'm making every attempt to get the money for them today. They told me to call Care Credit and ask for an increase. I made an earlier appt with another vet who is much less expensive and probably better then Woodland Vet. I will never recommend Woodland Vet to anyone again. They are extremely expensive. There are better vets in Woodland, and cost much less. Read Less

Love the staff and the Vets! We moved to Sac but continue to go here when needed! We have a puppy with EPI and they helped with diagnosing her, the vets genuinely care for the animals instead of just wanting to charge you for what they can like vet clinics I have been to in the past. In fact our dog has no fear when she has to go to the vet even after blood draws and tests and I believe it's because they have such a great staff who truly care for the animals. The employees here are nice. The front is friendly. And the doctors seem to know what their talking about. But my experience with them supposed to be calling me, and me having to call them isn't ok.I want my dog in a facility were they care, a check in call like they said they would never happens. I took my dog in a couple days ago thinking he'd have the best care they suggested so much, and let's be honest. Their prices are fairly more then most places. But I don't mind because most cases when you get what you pay for and I'm paying a lot. I would expect the best. My dog had a fecal test done and was told they would call me the next day with the results. Almost 12 in the afternoon hits the next day. I'm worried sick thinking maybe something not so good is going on with my dog. And expecting the worse! So I call and ask that I was wondering if my dogs results came back. Immediately I get. Yeah it's negative. So I ask.. Was anyone planning on calling me. She said well the technician hasn't looked at it yet, but the results came back negative. So why no call? She says we don't call when it's negative. But I'm curious the technician hasn't even checked it so it all makes no sense. And I was told in the appointment they would make sure to call me with the results and check in on my dog the next day. I called back asked for the manage and apparently she was in a meeting. I leave a voicemail and I go another day with no phone call back still? I'm not sure why I never receive a call back, or a appointment reminder. Nothing. For any previous appointments etc if I miss an appointment and don't go in. I don't even receive a call asking if we're running late or need to reschedule. I'd expect it's inconvenient when a nueter appointment is made for 7am but I don't show up? Well by the way if anyone actually wants to know. My dog is still not doing ok. And hasn't gone bathroom since the morning of the day of his appointment on Wednesday. So now I've paid for unnecessary meds, unnecessary fluid treatment. And definitely a waste of a fecal test. I have to call elsewhere and figure out were else to take my dog too and pay another vet to have them check on him. Because, he doesn't seem to be looking all that great. I gave this review two stars because all the employees are nice. Other then that. They seem to just not care about your animal once you've paid and left the building. I'm not even a 100% sure I'll go back to them again. It's convenient   for me to go to there facility. I also was just trying to find my dog a steady vet facility he can stick with and get used to instead of bouncing around from place to place. But I'd rather inconveniently drive to take him somewhere else if they don't necessarily care. Read Less

This feedback is for the pet hotel. I boarded in my 2 dogs (Banana and Grumpy) and for the most part I am pleased. They came back happy and safe, which is the the most important to me. The staff is always very friendly and my pups seem to enjoy their time there. When I picked up my dogs, they gave me back an empty food container for Grumpy. I found this odd because I packed it with 5 days worth of food for the 3 nights he was there. On the other hand, Banana's food container was almost full. Did they feed both my dogs the same food? I wouldn't mind if they were the same age and type of food, but Grumpy is almost 9 years old while Banana is 9 months. One was puppy food and the other was adult. I knocked one star for my rating.I knocked off another star for the cost. Both my dogs are under 40 lbs (15 and 16 lbs). They told me there is a discount when boarding 2 dogs but have them both in the same room. Alone it should have been $28/night per dog. 3 nights, 2 dogs. The total should be around $168 but my bill was $206 ($34.33/night per dog). After looking closer at the bill I see they listed both dogs as "over 40 lbs" and charged me accordingly. Not really much of a discount if the bill ends up being higher.Overall, I will most likely use them again for boarding but they need to pay attention to the feeding schedule provided and feed the dogs correctly. Also, when offering a "discount" for boarding the pups in the same room, make sure the bill is actually less than boarding them separately. Otherwise, what is the point of offering a discount. I have been bringing my animals to Woodland Vet Hospital for years and I have always had a great experience. My last dog was very difficult (an abused shelter dog I adopted) and their staff was always so wonderful to him. He didn't like ANY strangers, but he loved all of the staff at Woodland Vet Hospital. They were always very accommodating to his needs and I always knew he was in good hands when I had him boarded there or when I brought him in for a checkup.Read Less

My experience with Woodland Veterinary Hospital has been nothing but amazing. My family and I just got a new puppy, Jackson, one evening he was playing around in our living area and started crying. So I went to investigate the situation and noticed that he was bleeding in his mouth, I freaked and didn't know what to do. I called Woodland Veterinary Hospital searching for some advice on what to do. They told me that it would be best to bring him and get him checked out. Upon our arrival they greeted us and took Jackson in the back to take a look at him, the doctor came out and discussed what he observed and thought that his jaw was broken. I was in panic mode now, not knowing what happened and how it happened. The doctor calmed me down and reassured me that everything was going to be okay. He went over the procedure with me and made sure I was aware of what was going on the whole time we were there. Once he was sure that Jackson's jaw was truly broken he set it in to help it heal. After setting Jackson's jaw and taking him home, the next day I received a call from the doctor to see how Jackson was doing, he even took the time out to call around and see if there was anything else that we should be doing to help the healing process. We had to go in at least once a week to make sure everything was setting right, and change the bandage if needed. The staff was AMAZING they treated us with nothing but respect. They are all kind and loving to the animals that they see and treat. They make you feel as if you are part of the family. I would recommend Woodland Veterinary Hospital to anyone who has animals, and they are the only place that we will take our animals to.Read Less

I started taking my cats to Woodland Veterinary Hospital over 15years ago when we lived in Woodland. About 10 years ago we moved out of the area and then back again. I was very impressed that you still had the records of my cat from 12 years ago, and still very pleased with the care you give, and the friendliness and concern of all your employees. Since moving to the Natomas area five years ago to a brand new neighborhood still under construction, I have referred several people to your clinic. Each and every once of them has been so happy to find you, and I know they have made referrals to you as well. There are vets closer to where I live, but wouldn't even think of not driving to Woodland for pet care. Not that far, and oh so worth it. Read Less

When I moved here in 2004, one of the first things I did was find this vet for my curmudgeon of a cat, Buddy. I was immediately thrilled with the openness and cleanliness of the facility, the genuine engagement the vets had with all of the animals that came through the door (quite a few!), and the big surprise was they were significantly cheaper in all aspects, from labs to surgery, than my former vet in Sacramento. Through the years, the staff and the vets have helped me with nearly every imaginable feline scenario, from chipping to toenail clipping, from abcesses, the dreaded Cone of Shame, and unfortunately euthanasia...compassionately, gracefully and with simple dignity. Now, my two new feline thugs see Dr. Rhode mostly, but have seen Dr. Johnson and Dr. Denny. The online service is superb and the staff is what you would expect from a great small local business, warm, friendly, concerned and helpful. I don't know why anyone would go anywhere else with their animal companion. Read Less

My boyfriend and I came back a day early on a Sunday night from a short 4 day getaway at Tahoe because our housemate let us know that my mini rex, Ninja, wasn't eating very much (he had appetite issues before, when he was dumb and was experimenting with eating his litter....). As soon as we rush back to Davis and get to him around 10pm, we discover that his lower spine was broken and he basically died within 5 minutes of us getting home.Needless to say, we were distraught. The worst nightmare that could happen to pet parents happened to us, and we still needed to figure out what we were going to do with his remains. We weren't too interested in backyard burials, and we decided that we didn't want his remains with us (we just.....couldn't). Everything was closed at that hour, and so we had to wait till morning to call places that accepted pet remains. That was the second part of the nightmare. We called a lot of places, Vet Clinics and Animal Services/etc. in Davis, West Sacramento, and Woodland. Prices ranged from $85-$180 for private or non-private cremations. We basically spent 3 hours alternating between grieving and calling for arrangements..Finally, we called Woodland Vet Hospital, and unlike the other places we called, the price was reasonable for a cremation that didn't involve us taking back the ashes. The receptionist was also very capable of handling the situation graciously and tactfully while sounding sincerely sympathetic (unlike some of the other places we called) and told us to take our time bringing Ninja in.The drop-off was as painless as could be in this situation, and everything was quickly processed. TL;DR: Woodland Vet Hospital made an extremely difficult situation monumentally easier. Their fees for cremations are extremely reasonable compared to other places, and the respectful and tactful service provided by the front-desk staff is exceptional and was much needed at the time (they even provided tissues and a hug). Although I have visited here only once for a few minutes, I can confidently say that this place will be the first on my list should my pets require vet services in the future. Read Less

They allowed us as much time as we needed. i meant to leave this review years ago but I do want to leave one now. Read Less

Read Less

I took my elderly dog in (he was 13 at the time) for an exam because my his skin was very dry, his coat was getting very light, a lot of hair was falling out, and he wasn't himself. We were seen by Dr. Rode and he was very good with him. He took his time and was very gentle. He took time with his diagnosis. He even brought out a book and let me read exactly what he was talking about. He was very thorough in explaining himself and answered all the questions I needed. Tigger had a tumor in one of his testicles. Luckily, we were able to remove it by getting him fixed. A year later, my dog has made such a huge improvement. His coat looks great, his hair has thickened, and he has his spunk back. I am so grateful for Dr. Rode. He was fantastic! Read Less

Very expensive. Very unprofessional. We had a major emergency. We only went because it was a emergency. Our little dog ate something poisonous. He was almost unconscious . When we arrived they made us sit in the waiting room with our almost dead dog. Service was awful! They say they are a hospital but NOT! They dont even have supervision overnight for boarding or for the sick animals. We ended up going to UCDavis so he could be supervised overnight. Thank god for UCDavis otherwise our puppy would have died. Please be aware that this place is NOT a hospital as they advertise. I do not know how they get away with it. Clinic yes, but as for a hospital, not even close. I have heard some other unbelievable things happening about this place from other people too. Please be aware.

Read Less
