General Info
Gunbarrel Veterinary Hospital has been dedicated to providing the highest quality veterinary care in the Boulder, Longmont and Gunbarrel area since 1969. We provide complete health care for a wide variety of animals including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters. Gunbarrel Veterinary Hospital was originally started in a remodeled old farmhouse in 1969. As the years passed, the practice outgrew the farmhouse and in 2004 the new hospital and boarding kennel were completed. Our award winning facility is a 10,000 square foot modern, efficient building designed for the maximum comfort of our patients, their caretakers and our staff. The boarding kennel has 50 runs for dogs as well as a separate kitty condo for our feline boarders. We also have a very large covered outdoor Doggie Day Care.

DO NOT BOARD YOUR DOG HERE. THEY LITERALLY HANDED MY DOG BACK BLEEDING PROFUSELY. Dropped my dogs off for a weekend stay here and when I returned they tried handing me my dog out the door, and quickly closing it leaving me outside. I was soon covered in blood and realized my Great Dane's tale was gushing blood. I knocked on the door, concerned, and asked why they would give me my dog back bleeding and asked if they could please wrap the wound up. Without even an apology they told me if I wanted it wrapped they would have to charge me, I said okay not really having a choice at this point and they took my dog into the back again to wrap the wound. When she came back and saw my clothes, their hallway, and entrance covered in blood, I asked if I needed to pay for the wrap and she said no it was fine. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS, SEE PHOTOS. We were having some issues with our cat and we wanted to get him in as soon as possible. I'm glad we called this place. On a Friday afternoon we were able to squeeze him into the schedule within an hour of calling which is unheard of!Upon entering the staff was very kind and greeted us while showering our cat with compliments and petting. We sat in the exam room for maybe 10 min until the vet showed up. Dr. Gustafson was a fine vet. We felt he was very honest with our cat's condition and didn't try and upsell us on unnecessary tests and procedures. He was even very interested in our other pets as well as we talked about bringing them in.What's also nice about this place is that it offer boarding and grooming services. I definitely endorse this place if you live in the Boulder/Longmont area and are looking to have your pets checked out. Read Less

I cannot say enough about the team at GVH.  The front office staff are always friendly and responsive to calls and emails, and make sure to get us into a room as quickly as possible.  The vet staff always take the time to thoroughly examine my dog and explain the diagnosis and protocol with me.  I always feel my dog is in great hands, and after advising against a procedure recommended by another vet, I trust they care more about my dog's well-being than the business of veterinary care. Best veterinarians I have ever encountered!!!!  The staff here is amazing. Everyone is so kind and caring. This has been my dogs regular vet for abou a year now. Maybe a little less but I switched to them from Banfield because banfield would quote me for this, that, and the other for my dog without even seeing him. They kept trying to get us to put him on specialty foods which he didn't really need so I eventually left them and came to gunbarrel vet hospital. One day near thanksgiving my dog started acting incredibly different. He would pee and poop in the house without warning, he was walking as if he was drunk, his appetite was off and more. We immediately brought him to gunbarrel vet and they checked him out. He was a mystery but Dr. Carnes prescribed some prednisone thinking he may have swelling in his brain. The prednisone has helped us immensely. They have continuously checked in with us and saved us from spending $3000 for an unnecessary MRI from a different hospital. They constantly check in on our Buddy boy and are always always always willing to help us even without us having to bring him in. They're just an incredible group of people and I've never felt like anyone cared so much about my dog as they do. They care for him the way that I do and that is so rare. This is going to be our go to vet for many years to come. We love you guys! Thank you for everything you've done for my family. You rock! Read Less

I am beyond impressed with everyone at Gunbarrel Vet. We are new to Boulder and initially came to this vet out of convenience for our routine check ups and what not. I was pleased with the services and glad I happened to choose this place out of the many vets around. We saw Dr. Gustafson and he was really great with my dogs. However just recently... I'll spare the gory details... but my dogs had been boarded at another facility and my beagle Myles was having some serious GI issues as a result. I came home from work after a 12 hour night shift to a complete disaster and a very sick beagle. I called Gunbarrel Vet right away with my concerns and they were able to fit Myles in first thing. I had to bring my little dog Lucy as well because I just didn't know what else to do with her- she was a hot mess too as they were in the same kennel. Myles was okay and could have come home with me, but they offered to keep him for the day so I could get some rest and they could keep a closer eye on him- I am extremely  appreciative of that. We saw Dr. Vail this time and she was  great. She took a serious yet conservative approach to treating Myles- avoiding unnecessary and expensive tests. The groomer is also amazing. He was able to take Lucy right then to give her a quick bath, which gave me enough time to run home and clean up the mess. He also made sure Myles had a bath before I picked him up in the afternoon. I am super grateful for the groomer and baths as well!!! The entire staff at Gunbarrel Vet made a horrible morning not so bad!!! Read Less

After 14 years I'm parting ways with Gunbarrel Vet Hospital - my cats and I always loved Dr. Williams and April at the front desk always knew us and cared a lot for us and my cats, particularly Tara who has inflammatory bowel disease. Venturing out from Dr. Williams, always out of necessity and not desire, was hit or miss and almost all of our experience was with her and I can't say anything negative about her but never anything good with the other vets. However, when Tara's prescription meds ran low on Friday and I called in for a refill I was told I had an outstanding balance I was unaware of - you pay as you go here - so I still don't know what it was for - instead of letting me pay the balance and call in the refill and then let us come in for the tests they mandate every once in a while which always happened before I was told NOTHING could be done until this morning. I couldn't pay this outstanding balance, couldn't get my cat's records, couldn't do anything - I was lucky and found an extra couple of pills so Tara didn't run out of her very necessary medicine - but that was luck. This Vet office did NOT CARE!!!! They were focused entirely on their procedures over my pets HEALTH. They did NOT express any concern for my pet. They did NOT care that they were losing my business. They don't CARE. DON'T trust your pet's life into their uncaring hands. They put the almighty DOLLAR and their own PROCESSES over a pets care. Remember, I was ready to pay as soon as I found out their was a problem - on Friday. My pet's medicine is not commonly available it has to be ordered. They did not CARE. I was happy with them for many years and they didn't CARE that they were putting my cat's HEALTH at risk. They changed how they had always worked with us. I researched for the best place to take my 13 year old cat, Jade. I was moving to the area and didn't know anyone else in the area. This place came up every time as THE BEST. So I went in with pretty high expectations. I ended up arriving a few minutes late because my GPS brought me to the wrong area. They still were incredibly friendly and got Jade in only a few minutes after I arrived. I met with an incredibly sweet and knowledgeable vet tech who very patiently listened as I rambling on and on about how precious my princess is and how I want the best quality of life for her. Because I admit I did end up rambling about my cat.She weighed my princess quite delicately and didn't force Jade to do anything she didn't want to do. Then after giving the history of Jade and her life story the head vet came in. She was just as sweet and patient and kind to Jade. They both complimented Jade on how well behaved she was and she got a huge piece of tartar out of Jade's mouth. I never learned to brush her teeth growing up.Also I came in with a bunch of things I wanted the vet's opinion on using for my cat (like a gel to help with hairballs, and whether a cat toothpaste and brush would be appropriate or if it was a gimmicky one, sometimes it's hard to tell if you're getting the real deal or a gimmicky thing) but she was very patient and listened to all my concerns. She was familiar with the products I brought in and then compared them to the ingredients in the ones she recommends. Which I truly appreciate. Luckily I bought good stuff. Also they didn't give me the run around with prices, they asked if they could do something, like blood work and let me know the price up front. I felt the prices were incredibly fair. At least compared to the human equivalent. I got her blood work, the consultation, and x-rays without breaking the bank. Try doing that with human care without insurance, it's just not going to happen. This was only my first time, mind you, but I felt my expectations were really exceeded here. Everyone was friendly and they treated my cat like the princess she truly is. Oh, and they trimmed her claws for free. Which is good, they were getting long and if they didn't do it I would have to get Jade to get her claw trimmed. I do plan on learning eventually though. Read Less

Doggie Day Care:I've been taking my pup, Stella (the three-legged mutt) here for daycare for a year now. She goes very sporadically - I wouldn't consider us "regulars", but everybody always knows and loves on her. When I pick her up, her tail is always wagging, and she always falls asleep on the 5 minute car ride home. Dropping her off/picking her up is always so easy and the system they have in place is very convenient for people like us. Half day offers are a blessing when I don't necessarily need daycare but need her to burn off some energy.Vet:Because her vet also doubles as DDC, she doesn't exactly know the difference when she comes to the building so getting her into an exam room is easy. We just had her yearly exam last week and the vet tech was so sweet to her, but our vet herself was the nicest I have ever interacted with (We had seen Dr. Welcome last year and weren't impressed). Her name is Dr. Vail -- I couldn't recommend her more. She was very professional, yet spoke to Stella so well. I had a million questions that I had built up over the year, and she didn't look rushed to answer all of them despite how long it all took. Read Less

I'm writing this to balance the negative reviews of Gunbarrel Vet Hospital--I have been going to Gunbarrel since 2011 and I have always been impressed and grateful. I am now taking my second dog to Gunbarrel for care after losing my first to cancer in 2012. Going through that process was horrifying and Drs Michelle Feller and Jon Gustafson were totally there for me with thorough medical information, advice and compassion (indeed, I should have written this review back then.) Further, the front desk staff has ALWAYS been incredibly professional and accommodating--I'm really shocked by some of the comments I've read. To be completely fair, very early on there was one vet I did not like but she is no longer working there from what I can see. I just made sure I never went to her again. There are several other vets closer to my home but I know I am getting the best care for my pup at Gunbarrel. Read Less

I've had nothing but bad experiences with this clinic, when I was 17 I took my boxer there because I found a couple lumps and an older women vet who looked homeless told me she had cancer and I needed to do surgery right away, I was 17 and helped support my family and I said I would have to save up for a couple months and she told me that maybe I should rehome my dog to someone that could afford her care, first of all who wants to adopt a 7 year old boxer with cancer? So I saved up for a couple months the $1200 for surgery and had it done at Boulder Humane Society and the cancer never came back. I'll never forget how rude this women was in my life, I think her name was Dr. Welcome. Before this I took my old dog in for incontinence and the pills they gave me didn't work so I went to Arapahoe Animal Hospital and they suggested adding estrogen pills and that worked great. Save yourself the trouble and go to Arapahoe Animal Hospital where they give great care. And have a better doggy daycare. Read Less

I heard good things about this clinic from everyone, and truly every time we stopped by everyone was pleasant and professional. We took our 2 1/2 year old cat to this clinic about a year ago - she started vomiting 2x a day out of nowhere. After seeing a few members from this team, running bloodwork throughout the year, multiple visits, several phone calls in addition to those visits, my 3 1/2 year old cat is being euthanized today. I was essentially told that it was IBD, but that since there is no cure for it we just had to find the right food for her. 6-8 week stints on different kinds of dry food purchased from the clinic (they do have a return policy if there is still food in the previous bag when it's time to switch, which is helpful). This clearly wasn't working, but every time we took her back in and we saw someone new, and retold the same story all over again, everyone said the same thing. We ran new bloodwork 4 days ago, and all signs point to Lymphoma, intestinal bleeding, etc. She won't eat for the pain, has lost pounds off her that she didn't have to lose. I acknowledge that it's possible this could have happened even with the right testing at the right time, but I've watched her go from a happy, healthy animal to a sweet, sad, in-pain thing who is hungry, but won't eat.. who wants to be close to you for comfort, but can't do so without being in pain - a year of not treating a developing problem will kill an animal. I've since read that recent research suggests that Inflammatory Bowel Disease, left untreated, can lead to Lymphoma. Simply being aware of any kind of research like this being done on such a widely-developing health issue in cats; having the ability to address such research and explain to me why it is or isn't valid - that's the expertise in a veterinarian I'm paying for and trusting in, and no one had it at this clinic. I'm sure they really did believe this to be true and had the best of intentions, but I feel like that is more concerning - I trusted them to do their jobs and investigate while she was strong enough, and instead it was too late before I got testing done with someone else. It was a sudden and rapid decline, in a way.. but it took over a year to get to that point. I'm most angry at myself for trusting a process that clearly was failing my buddy. No matter how many people we saw here, I should have known to leave sooner. Take a good amount of time to do your own research, and despite getting a second opinion from a second Dr at this clinic, be smart and go somewhere else if needed. I can't speak for any of their other services. Read Less

I wish I could leave ZERO STARS - or better, NEGATIVE STARS.I started going to Gunbarrel Veterinary Hospital for convenience -- had just moved to the Niwot area and they have such a wonderful facility.I left Gunbarrel Veterinary Hospital because my dog got attacked in their lobby and the staff showed little/no concern about the situation and did not reprimand the client who allowed her dog, Rosie (a Rottweiler) to enter the lobby unattended. The catalyst for this review is the new article I saw recently (kdvr.com/2015/03/01/owne…) Here's what happened: I was sitting on the couch in the lobby waiting for my 2nd dog to have his shots administered in the back examining room. The dog with me was leashed and well attended.  In walks Rosie, trailing her leash.  Her owner, at least 15 feet behind Rosie, was yammering with the staff on her way into the lobby. Obviously, she and Rosie were "regulars."  For some inexplicable reason, Rosie decides to charge across the lobby and lunge at my dog's throat, scaring him to death.  Rosie's owner saunters over  to the couch after the attack and says "Rosie never does that." Well, she did.  I just witnessed it.The staff simply leaned over the counter and asked "is your dog alright?"  I believe a pat on the head and a quick check to SEE if my dog actually WAS alright is not to much to have asked, given the situation.A veterinary lobby is the LAST PLACE one should expect their dog to get attacked. Rules should be in place -- AND ENFORCED:  dogs on leash and attended by owners AT ALL TIMES. I was abiding by that best practice.  Rosie's owner was not.  And the staff at Gunbarrel Veterinary Hospital in no way appeared to be inclined to enforce such a rule.I would NOT RECOMMEND that anyone take their dog to Gunbarrel Veterinary Hospital.  It is the most convenient veterinary facility in my area and I will never return. Two dogs. Lots of years left and lots of money to spend on veterinary care. The recent article showing yet another incident of lack of attention, is simply reinforcement of my decision.  Dogs will be dogs. You never know how they will interact. That's what leashes and careful attention/interaction are intended to prevent.  And, veterinary facilities should be the most diligent purveyors of such best practices.  It appears that Gunbarrel Veterinary Hospital has not figured this out.  If you care about your pets, DO NOT take them to this vet. I lived in Boulder for four years and this was my vet for the entire time for both my cat and my dog. I received very mediocre care and the physicians were very rude and unprofessional. The vet techs and the receptionists were extremely nice and accommodating, despite the incompetent veterinary physicians. During the holidays I boarded my dog, whom of which has hip dysplasia, and I made it a point to mention that to them multiple times. I told them that I didn't want my dog to play too much because of aggravation he gets in his hips. When I picked up my dog he was a bit off. He was bleeding from his nose from multiple cuts, limping to a point where I had to carry his 95 pounds to my car, and was overall very sad. When I don't see my dog for just a day, he is so excited to see me. I hadn't seen him for a week, and he just limped up to me, bleeding from cuts on his nose, and was the saddest I have ever seen him since I owned him as a puppy. Read Less

They killed my dog. I had a 7 year old Yorkshire terrier which had undergone general anesthesia 3 times previously, one for neutering and twice for dental cleaning, all with my regular veterinarian. The veterinarian I normally use does not have any boarding facility, I had to board my dog and to have the dental cleaning. They overdosed my dog with medication and during the procedure their monitoring equipment failed, by the time he realized the dog was in trouble they tried to intubate my dog but it was too late. When the records were reviewed by 3 other veterinarians they were appalled at both the treatment and the shoddy records that were kept. In addition, I learned that when my dog was previously boarded he was attacked and bite by another dog and required medical treatment. Do not bring your dog here if you value the life of your dog. He may come back fine or may come back injured or worse, dead. The doctors are very smart and appear compassionate but they take no responsibility when things go wrong. Take my advice to heart. These people are great! We have been taking our two cats to Gunbarrel for vet services for years even after we moved to Denver. They are honest, knowledgeable and always excited to see Kiwi and Waffles in their clinic :) We have had several incidents which could have been very costly at a different clinic but Gunbarrel never tried to take advantage or over charge us. Once we thought our cat Kiwi had eaten a poisonous lily flower and we took her in and they evaluated her and gave her an IV and determined she had not been poisoned BEFORE trying to do more drastic and expensive services. Our other cat Waffles came down with ringworm several years ago and they were very helpful in giving us useful info about ringworm along with low cost treatments which  cured him completely. I can only speak from our boarding experience, not veterinary care. Boarding is expensive here and if you want to include doggie day care, it breaks the bank. Both times we boarded our dog here, the staff lost several of his belongings, even though we had labeled them clearly. We lost a padded doggy bed and several toys. The second time, we mistakenly came home with someone else's expensive-looking puppy blanket. Additionally, his traveling crate was chewed apart on the outside, leading us to believe he was either unsupervised outside of his crate or crated with another dog that was trying to jailbreak him. On our first visit, they returned all of his soft food to us un-opened, even though there were clear instructions that he needed it every day in addition to his kibble.I'd recommend Cottonwood Kennels over this place. Wonderful staff and day care is included if you board. Read Less

I've taken my Malamute, Tundra, here for boarding twice, and am generally satisfied with the care he has received. They have been very accomodating of last minute reservations. Tundra is a bit of a jerk with other dogs (typical dominant northern breed), so I was a little worried about kenneling him. They were patient enough to work with him with other dogs to help socialize him, so now he can be in normal day care. The staff were friendly when I called on a daily basis (okay maybe twice) to check on him, and I feel comfortavle leaving my baby there. He seemed dehydrated both times he came home, but I think it's just because he's so big and their water dishes are too small. Easily fixed by taking his dish next time. Read Less

The medical care my dog received was average however the prices are astronomical. Firstly, I was made to feel guilty I wasn't getting the top of the line annual exam for my dog. Secondly, the price of the exam included an injection the dog didn't need! To remove this cost required approval! I left feeling as if the high prices were paying for a luxurious waiting room. Happy to report have found a VERY caring vet that's not hung up on a fancy building, leather furniture in the waiting room and charges fairly for their loving expertise. Read Less

The folks at Gunbarrel were so wonderful. I run a persian cat rescue for Colorado and Wyoming, and the Boulder shelter called me with a cat needing rescue by the end of the day. I didn't have room at that moment, nor did I have any available volunteers to go get her on less than a day's notice, since I'm based in Fort Collins. The lovely staff not only agreed to board her for us until we had room with no advanced warning, they even went down to the shelter to pick her up to ensure she wouldn't be euthanized at the end of the day!

You rock! Read Less

Read Less

They take the time needed and never come across rushed. They listen carefully and never disregard a concern about my dog's health. Even their follow-up calls are considered and they take the time to explain everything, whether voicemail or not. They are easy to get ahold of and even when they are fully booked and dealing with multiple emergencies, reception is always calm and willing to work to make sure I get an appointment.

This review is for the doggie daycare. We take our 3 year old dog here about once a week - she loves it and we love it because she is exhausted when we pick her up after work!  They let the dogs play all day in a supervised area that is shaded.  The people at the front desk are super nice - we have had some great chats!  They are conveniently located right off the Diagonal, so drop off and pick up is a snap/not out of the way. I made the basic mistake of not asking price first. The dental work they suggested to be done was not the $200 to $225 I expected. It was over $400. Then there was the chip. I did ask and was told it was $45. And it was except for the $17 / year that was not mentioned. When I expressed my disappointment, I was told that was a charge of some other company, as if they were not responsible. They have seen my dogs for the last time.

Seriously, how many animal hospitals does one visit where the furniture rivals that of a law office? Happy to report have found a VERY caring vet that's not hung up on a fancy building, leather furniture in the waiting room and charges fairly for their loving expertise. Read Less

After driving 25 miles to Gunbarrel I was thinking maybe this was to far. During my Heidi's appointment I was convinced that this is where all my dogs will come. Dr. Brad is deeply devoted to animals. I had been a cat/dog rescuer in 2 States before moving to Co. and we shared stories with each other. He touched me with his deep love for animals. My Heidi had issues getting up and walking. Dr. Brad successfully used accupuncture to relieve her and she now scouts out the bunnies so she can chase them up & down the hill.

They took great care of the cat, a beautiful, affectionate Chinchilla persian with a lot of life left to live thanks to Gunbarrel! Read Less

Nice place to take your dog to get teeth cleaned without having to put them under! What a great job they did. Really nice building and seems clean.
