I have been a client of Banfield on Southgate for about 7 years now with 4 dogs and I have NEVER had a problem with any of the doctors and nurses there EVER. They have always been kind and loving to all of my animals and very thorough in their care of them. All 4 of my dogs have been on the pet plans, which makes taking care of my little furry loved ones a whole lot easier and economical. I still am a faithful client even though I live 90 minutes away and make the trek at least twice a year for check-ups. Thank you, Banfield, for taking care of us! Read Less

I can not rave enough about Dr. Cowles and Dr. Nelson. I really got (and still get) the feeling that my baby is their number one concern and they do everything in their power to accommodate her.They, nor their vet techs, have tried selling me on their wellness plans. I had to ask for information. They gave me all the information and let me choose my own plan and didn't even try to sell me on a more expensive one (nor any additional services)There have been a few times where I've called and asked to get her in that same day, and even though they always seem to be booked solid, they tell me to drop her off and they'll call me when they figure the problem out.They're amazing. And for as long as these ladies continue to work here, i will continue to bring my pets here. Read Less

I guess I kind of feel compelled to write this to help offset some of the scathing reviews. I've had Dr. Kennedy help me with my dog on several occasions and found her to be a terrific doc. She explains everything to me in the detail that I want. The staff is great as well. They are always helpful and my guess is that it can be a challenging and stressful job at times. (People are as concerned about their pets as they are about family members -- they really are family after all -- so they can probably be quite demanding on the technicians and support personnel.) You know, it's really funny reading these other reviews.  I find myself wondering- "HOLY SMOKES, these guys left a review on the wrong place."  My experience with Banfield has been nothing but spectacular.  I'm in the medical field and I know from experience that nobody is going to get online and give you an awesome review just for the heck of it.  No- they're going to get online and COMPLAIN about nothing. Oh my gosh- did you have to wait 10 mins for you appointment that you were late to in the first place?? I feel AWFUL for you.My dog has seizures and is my one and only.  I will not be having children, because he is my child.  To me- the most expensive plan they offer (42 bucks a month) is absolutely NOTHING.  But to some people that forget that animals cost money, I could see this freaking them out.  They did not sell me the most expensive plan, instead, I begged for it because I give my puppy everything that he wants. Period. Dr. Cole is incredible (and a Michigan State graduate).  My puppy normally doesn't like going to the vet but Tanya and Dr. Cole made him feel right at home.  I was able to get his blood tests done for 45 bucks (I normally pay over 300) and they sell his medicine for 50% less than Walgreens.  HOW THE HECK COULD ANYONE SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT THIS PLACE.  SHAME ON YOU. Dr. Cowles is wonderful!! My cat needed extensive dental work done and she called me every step of the way to give me updates on my girl. She ran into an unexpected road block and called me immediately and reassured me that all would be well, potential side affects, benefits and risks. She didnt suggest unnecessary procedures or treatments. The vet techs explained all of the potential medications they were going to use and the costs associated with them so there were no surprises. They care about my cat as much as I do, and that is a huge relief. They didn't try to sell me on their wellness plans. Instead, I was the one who initiated that conversation. The tech gave me pros and cons of each. I was very surprised that they didn't try to sell me on the most expensive plan, because that's what I've come to expect from any business. She recommended the $25/month plan because thats all that was needed. And in one visit, it's already paid for itself. I will definitely trust them in the future with my fur baby. Read Less

I would rate this place 1/2 a star. Before coming here I was hesitant coming to this location as well. But decided to give them a try since the location on Academy was full. Well all the other reviews were right. Someone else wrote a review to give them a chance well I did and my experience wasn't good at all. I think they were B-Sing you! I called to schedule an appointment on our new puppy for 8:30am. I got there at 8:32am and waited until 8:48am until someone came out and acknowledge me. I was checked in and I was taken into the room along with my puppy. I was told about the wellness plan which I was kept being convinced I should buy the second highest plan they offered. So I needed the shots for my puppy and the membership fee will be due after pickup. The tech picked up my dog from the table just fine and they told me they will call me when they were done with my puppy. At 11:22am they called me and said, "I'm sorry we couldn't give him the shots today because he was jumpy and running around." "You need to come pick up your dog today and re-schedule another day." I guess I have the word stupid written on my forehead. Aren't you techs and Dr all trained for this?!?! Duh!!! Do your job and hold him down. I bet someone dropped the ball and didn't have the shots in stock. I have two kids ages 1 and 2 of my own and they have a nurse that still hold down my kids legs to give them shots. Because kids also can move while giving shots. They said they were scared that my puppy would bite them and that it is better if I came in and held him while they give the shots, BUT ON A DIFFERENT DAY. Well I came in 20 min before closing and I even offered if I could hold him while they give the shots. They didn't even give me a straight answer and that I should re-schedule. They lead me to the back and OMG my puppy was shaking!!! I reached in slowly and he even tried to bite me. Never have my puppy ever try to bite me. NEVER!!! Y'all must've been yelling him and scaring him to the point he became defensive. Again he was shaking so bad as if he was scared of something. He was scared sh*tless!!! It took Jack about 2 minutes to realize it was me and he let me hold him and I took him out back to the front. As I was walking out I saw a bunch of muzzles hanging the wall by the door as I was exiting their back area. He was still shaking and I could feel his heart rate beating fast. What did they say to me again? That they were scared of him biting them? I may not be certified tech vet or a Vet Dr, but I'm not stupid. Do your job? Or is it because someone didn't want to tell me they didn't have the shots? I remember whenJack was first scared of me when I first bought him and took him home. I wasn't shaking but he was distant. So I offered him food and water and sometimes treats. Make him feel welcome and accepted. Again, I'm no professional but use your head y'all! Waste of my time coming here. The reason why I scheduled for 8:30am is because Sunday's are my only day off. I work Monday-Saturday 9am-7pm just like I told the lady on the phone before making an appointment coming there and just like I told the ladies at the desk as they were trying to re-schedule me. It was a waste of my time coming to this location. I've even helped my family members take their dogs to Academy to get shots and they would ask me if I wanted to hold them while they give the shots when their Pomeranian was younger. I also have a Pomeranian and I was treated differently at this location!!! I do have another appointment with them a month later but I will surely wait for them to call me so I can cancel on their A**!!! I'm not going to do business with Banfield again especially at this location.Read Less

Switched to this vet facility after not being happy with our former vet who nickels and dimes you to death. One of my dogs has skin issues and Dr. Kennedy listened to what I had to say and what I am doing to try to improve my puppy without harsh medication. She didn't push steroids or other medications until we see if diet changes help her, which is so totally opposite from our last vet. She gave other possible options and was very straight forward with costs so nothing would be a shock. And of course she recommended to come back if things just are not getting better. I will definitely go back to see Dr. Kennedy with both of my dogs since she listens to everything I have to say and gives great advice with no trickery attached. The vet tech in with Dr. Kennedy was great, as well! Wish I would have gotten her name. Read Less

I was their with my husky Romeo and i asked about a new cone after he's surgery. The vet tech came out to speak to me and I told her she said he can't do stairs unfortunately the information wasn't passed down to me when my fiancé picked up Romeo. She said- "if he keeps on going up the stairs then it's on you if he hurts him self" the day after he's surgery we requested a different cone and they said they would call back and never did. That's the reason why I decided to go to the location and encountered the vet tech Meko with a bad attitude as if I wanted to hurt my dog on purpose. Costumer service goes a long way. My new puppy Juliette will not be in the puppy plan I will reather pay extra for good costumer service. Read Less

My family and I have had our pets treated at Banfield over the years off and on. And EVERY encounter with them has been amazing. Each and every employee is wonderful and so caring. Saturday I called about our pug who was in respiratory distress and the animal hospital was too far away. Even though she hadn't been treated there in a few years, they saw her immediately. The staff was very busy with other patients but still stopped to help and offer us comfort. We did have to euthanize our sweet pug but the staff made the experience so much better. Even after we called another place who "couldn't get her in" Banfield immediately took care of our pug. From the emergency phone call to Banfield to our last moments with our pet, the staff was just amazing. I wish I remembered all of their names so I could recognize them here! Read Less

I was hesitant going here based on previous reviews, however my experience was much better than others had experienced. I spoke with the vet and told her that I almost didn't come here based on previous reviews, but was pleasantly surprised. The vet informed me Banfield was under private ownership , but recently Banfield is back under cooperate ownership. If you had a poor experience in the past I would recommend giving them a try again! The Vet assistants need to be re trained because they look miserable, and two they take it out on the customers. It isn't right and it isn't fair. I pay to much money for my dog and they're not going to treat him wrong. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BANFIELD. They suck. I don't feel they handled it correctly, i'm not even sure if they give my dog water or take him out for the nine hours he's there FOR NO REASON. I wouldn't bring a stuffed animal to Banfield! In fact, I won't ever step foot in Pets Mart again because of them. I brought my dog in 2 months ago listless and losing weight....they did almost $600 worth of tests and couldn't tell me anything. The thought she might be depressed but to bring her back if she got worse....she started losing weight again and we didn't know what to do thinking if Banfield did all the tests that would tell us anything we just had to watch her.Yesterday (Sunday) I found her laying, Quivering unable to get up and called Banfield. They couldn't fit her in for an emergency! The main reason we got set up with Banfield is that they were close and had weekend hours, I had the conversation with them asking "What if she gets worse after hours and they let me know it would be OK they were open 7 days and could always make room for her in emergency...that was a lie! We took her to an emergency clinic who redid the blood and urine tests finding that she had a low-grade infection and looked as if she'd had it for awhile. I brought all 3 dogs to banfield in the past and always left feeling like we were guessing at their health....my mistake, never again! Read Less

Look at the hours!!!  Every other Banfield in town is open SEVEN days a week, TWELVE hours a day.27 June 2016AVOID.If I could give it ZERO stars I would.  My little Border Collie had been bit by a Brown recluse spider.  I brought her in FRANTIC.  Did they get even a VET TECH to look at her briefly to help my peace of mind? NO.  They were MORE interested in getting ALL of my financial information and then they just left me standing at the counter while they dealt with another customers.I took Maddie to Browns: $49 for visit AND meds.  The original owner (Lee Wilwerdig) would be ASHAMED of what his hospital has become.  I am ECSTATIC that Banfield is taking over this location, but for me? TOO LATE.  Their North Academy location is JUST AS BAD.YOU DO NOT EXIST TO MAKE MONEY. YOU EXIST TO CARE FOR ANIMALS AND TODAY? YOU FAILED.And just so you know for the FUTURE:"Symptoms of a spider bite usually occur within two to 24 hours. If you believe your dog's been spider-bitten, get him to the vet. Bring the spider in a jar if you can for identification. Your vet can administer antivenin in serious cases, along with supportive care such as intravenous fluids, pain medication and anti-seizure medication. She may prescribe treatment for the wound caused by a brown recluse bite to prevent infection." Read Less

If I could give this place zero stars I would. They are a complete ripoff. I took my cat in after he was attacked by a dog or some other kind of animal and the paperwork I received lectured me about the aggressiveness of my cat toward the doctor. He has never liked the vet and we cautioned the vet about that. I gave my permission for him to be sedated while the vet worked on him. How am I supposed to control the fact my cat hates getting shots and having things shoved up his butt for stool samples? I can't say I like it much either. At least I speak English and understand why the doctor is doing it to me! The cat doesn't!ALSO, my boyfriend JUST took his cat in for a checkup a week or two ago (sorry, November 6th, not quite a month.) and they have been treating him for a while. He's very old and has had several tooth extractions and in his last checkup they didn't bother to check his teeth at all and GUESS WHAT?!? He needs another extraction! So now we have to wait a whole new week for our poor old guy to get the care he needs at a NEW VET that specializes in dental care. Our last visit with our old cat was a complete waste of money! AVOID BANFIELD!Also, when I just called and told them that I didn't want them to send me any more junk mail because we were finding another vet, the lady I spoke with didn't even care to ask why. She does not care about the well being of the animals, I have personally seen her turn people away for not having sufficient funds to care for their pets and talk bad about them to her employees in the back, which I found to be very unprofessional. I have been a customer here for about 3 years because I didn't know any better.  I foolishly signed up for their highly over-priced wellness plan.  They have consistently been rude and too busy to provide good service.  Their employees are short with clients, too busy to remember my pets name and straight up confrontational!  I scheduled an appointment for my dogs annual comprehensive exam and they told me to drop my dog off at 0730 and when i get there, the girl tells me that their computers are done and turns her back to me, when I ask her if anything can be done, she looks at me like I'm stupid and rolls her eyes, telling me that I have to wait 20 minutes until the computer comes up.  I'm the only customer there and she couldn't have me fill out paperwork or weigh my dog?  Clearly these folks are doing so well that they don't need customers.  Most importantly, my thought on this last visit was if they were so rude to me, how were they treating my dog who can't speak?  At that point I told the girl that I had no intention of waiting another minute for such rude service.  Don't waste your time or your money.  A conversation with owner only got me an explanation of why this employee was soo rude.  Really?  I'm supposed to give my hard earned to people who treat me poorly?  I don't think so.  Be smarter than me, find an excellent local vet who will treat your pet like family and not like another cog in the wheel.  F- Read Less

I have been a client of Banfield on Southgate for about 7 years now with 4 dogs and I have NEVER had a problem with any of the doctors and nurses there EVER. They have always been kind and loving to all of my animals and very thorough in their care of them. All 4 of my dogs have been on the pet plans, which makes taking care of my little furry loved ones a whole lot easier and economical. I really got (and still get) the feeling that my baby is their number one concern and they do everything in their power to accommodate her.They, nor their vet techs, have tried selling me on their wellness plans. I had to ask for information. They gave me all the information and let me choose my own plan and didn't even try to sell me on a more expensive one (nor any additional services)There have been a few times where I've called and asked to get her in that same day, and even though they always seem to be booked solid, they tell me to drop her off and they'll call me when they figure the problem out.They're amazing. She explains everything to me in the detail that I want. The staff is great as well. They are always helpful and my guess is that it can be a challenging and stressful job at times. (People are as concerned about their pets as they are about family members -- they really are family after all -- so they can probably be quite demanding on the technicians and support personnel.) You know, it's really funny reading these other reviews.  I find myself wondering- "HOLY SMOKES, these guys left a review on the wrong place."  My experience with Banfield has been nothing but spectacular.  I'm in the medical field and I know from experience that nobody is going to get online and give you an awesome review just for the heck of it.  No- they're going to get online and COMPLAIN about nothing. Oh my gosh- did you have to wait 10 mins for you appointment that you were late to in the first place?? I feel AWFUL for you.My dog has seizures and is my one and only.  I will not be having children, because he is my child.  To me- the most expensive plan they offer (42 bucks a month) is absolutely NOTHING.  But to some people that forget that animals cost money, I could see this freaking them out.  They did not sell me the most expensive plan, instead, I begged for it because I give my puppy everything that he wants. Period. Dr. Cole is incredible (and a Michigan State graduate).  My puppy normally doesn't like going to the vet but Tanya and Dr. Cole made him feel right at home.  I was able to get his blood tests done for 45 bucks (I normally pay over 300) and they sell his medicine for 50% less than Walgreens.  HOW THE HECK COULD ANYONE SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT THIS PLACE.  SHAME ON YOU. Dr. Cowles is wonderful!! My cat needed extensive dental work done and she called me every step of the way to give me updates on my girl. She ran into an unexpected road block and called me immediately and reassured me that all would be well, potential side affects, benefits and risks. She didnt suggest unnecessary procedures or treatments. The vet techs explained all of the potential medications they were going to use and the costs associated with them so there were no surprises. They care about my cat as much as I do, and that is a huge relief. They didn't try to sell me on their wellness plans. Instead, I was the one who initiated that conversation. The tech gave me pros and cons of each. I was very surprised that they didn't try to sell me on the most expensive plan, because that's what I've come to expect from any business. She recommended the $25/month plan because thats all that was needed. And in one visit, it's already paid for itself. I will definitely trust them in the future with my fur baby. Read Less

I would rate this place 1/2 a star. Before coming here I was hesitant coming to this location as well. But decided to give them a try since the location on Academy was full. Well all the other reviews were right. Someone else wrote a review to give them a chance well I did and my experience wasn't good at all. I think they were B-Sing you! I called to schedule an appointment on our new puppy for 8:30am. I got there at 8:32am and waited until 8:48am until someone came out and acknowledge me. I was checked in and I was taken into the room along with my puppy. I was told about the wellness plan which I was kept being convinced I should buy the second highest plan they offered. So I needed the shots for my puppy and the membership fee will be due after pickup. The tech picked up my dog from the table just fine and they told me they will call me when they were done with my puppy. At 11:22am they called me and said, "I'm sorry we couldn't give him the shots today because he was jumpy and running around." "You need to come pick up your dog today and re-schedule another day." I guess I have the word stupid written on my forehead. Aren't you techs and Dr all trained for this?!?! Duh!!! Do your job and hold him down. I bet someone dropped the ball and didn't have the shots in stock. I have two kids ages 1 and 2 of my own and they have a nurse that still hold down my kids legs to give them shots. Because kids also can move while giving shots. They said they were scared that my puppy would bite them and that it is better if I came in and held him while they give the shots, BUT ON A DIFFERENT DAY. Well I came in 20 min before closing and I even offered if I could hold him while they give the shots. They didn't even give me a straight answer and that I should re-schedule. They lead me to the back and OMG my puppy was shaking!!! I reached in slowly and he even tried to bite me. Never have my puppy ever try to bite me. NEVER!!! Y'all must've been yelling him and scaring him to the point he became defensive. Again he was shaking so bad as if he was scared of something. He was scared sh*tless!!! It took Jack about 2 minutes to realize it was me and he let me hold him and I took him out back to the front. As I was walking out I saw a bunch of muzzles hanging the wall by the door as I was exiting their back area. He was still shaking and I could feel his heart rate beating fast. What did they say to me again? That they were scared of him biting them? I may not be certified tech vet or a Vet Dr, but I'm not stupid. Do your job? Or is it because someone didn't want to tell me they didn't have the shots? I remember whenJack was first scared of me when I first bought him and took him home. I wasn't shaking but he was distant. So I offered him food and water and sometimes treats. Make him feel welcome and accepted. Again, I'm no professional but use your head y'all! Waste of my time coming here. The reason why I scheduled for 8:30am is because Sunday's are my only day off. I work Monday-Saturday 9am-7pm just like I told the lady on the phone before making an appointment coming there and just like I told the ladies at the desk as they were trying to re-schedule me. It was a waste of my time coming to this location. I've even helped my family members take their dogs to Academy to get shots and they would ask me if I wanted to hold them while they give the shots when their Pomeranian was younger. I also have a Pomeranian and I was treated differently at this location!!! I do have another appointment with them a month later but I will surely wait for them to call me so I can cancel on their A**!!! I'm not going to do business with Banfield again especially at this location.Read Less

Switched to this vet facility after not being happy with our former vet who nickels and dimes you to death. One of my dogs has skin issues and Dr. Kennedy listened to what I had to say and what I am doing to try to improve my puppy without harsh medication. She didn't push steroids or other medications until we see if diet changes help her, which is so totally opposite from our last vet. She gave other possible options and was very straight forward with costs so nothing would be a shock. And of course she recommended to come back if things just are not getting better. I will definitely go back to see Dr. Kennedy with both of my dogs since she listens to everything I have to say and gives great advice with no trickery attached. The vet tech in with Dr. Kennedy was great, as well! Wish I would have gotten her name. Read Less

I was their with my husky Romeo and i asked about a new cone after he's surgery. The vet tech came out to speak to me and I told her she said he can't do stairs unfortunately the information wasn't passed down to me when my fiancé picked up Romeo. She said- "if he keeps on going up the stairs then it's on you if he hurts him self" the day after he's surgery we requested a different cone and they said they would call back and never did. That's the reason why I decided to go to the location and encountered the vet tech Meko with a bad attitude as if I wanted to hurt my dog on purpose. Costumer service goes a long way. My family and I have had our pets treated at Banfield over the years off and on. And EVERY encounter with them has been amazing. Each and every employee is wonderful and so caring. Saturday I called about our pug who was in respiratory distress and the animal hospital was too far away. Even though she hadn't been treated there in a few years, they saw her immediately. The staff was very busy with other patients but still stopped to help and offer us comfort. We did have to euthanize our sweet pug but the staff made the experience so much better. Even after we called another place who "couldn't get her in" Banfield immediately took care of our pug. From the emergency phone call to Banfield to our last moments with our pet, the staff was just amazing. I wish I remembered all of their names so I could recognize them here! Read Less

The vet informed me Banfield was under private ownership , but recently Banfield is back under cooperate ownership. If you had a poor experience in the past I would recommend giving them a try again! The Vet assistants need to be re trained because they look miserable, and two they take it out on the customers. It isn't right and it isn't fair. I pay to much money for my dog and they're not going to treat him wrong. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BANFIELD. They suck. I don't feel they handled it correctly, i'm not even sure if they give my dog water or take him out for the nine hours he's there FOR NO REASON. I brought my dog in 2 months ago listless and losing weight....they did almost $600 worth of tests and couldn't tell me anything. The thought she might be depressed but to bring her back if she got worse....she started losing weight again and we didn't know what to do thinking if Banfield did all the tests that would tell us anything we just had to watch her.Yesterday (Sunday) I found her laying, Quivering unable to get up and called Banfield. They couldn't fit her in for an emergency! The main reason we got set up with Banfield is that they were close and had weekend hours, I had the conversation with them asking "What if she gets worse after hours and they let me know it would be OK they were open 7 days and could always make room for her in emergency...that was a lie! We took her to an emergency clinic who redid the blood and urine tests finding that she had a low-grade infection and looked as if she'd had it for awhile. I brought all 3 dogs to banfield in the past and always left feeling like we were guessing at their health....my mistake, never again! Read Less

I think the staff here is very friendly and while they are not as enthusiastic as others, they do a great job and contrary to other posts, they do seem to care about my pets.

If I could give this place zero stars I would. They are a complete ripoff. I took my cat in after he was attacked by a dog or some other kind of animal and the paperwork I received lectured me about the aggressiveness of my cat toward the doctor. He has never liked the vet and we cautioned the vet about that. I gave my permission for him to be sedated while the vet worked on him. How am I supposed to control the fact my cat hates getting shots and having things shoved up his butt for stool samples? I can't say I like it much either. At least I speak English and understand why the doctor is doing it to me! The cat doesn't!ALSO, my boyfriend JUST took his cat in for a checkup a week or two ago (sorry, November 6th, not quite a month.) and they have been treating him for a while. He's very old and has had several tooth extractions and in his last checkup they didn't bother to check his teeth at all and GUESS WHAT?!? He needs another extraction! So now we have to wait a whole new week for our poor old guy to get the care he needs at a NEW VET that specializes in dental care. Our last visit with our old cat was a complete waste of money! AVOID BANFIELD!Also, when I just called and told them that I didn't want them to send me any more junk mail because we were finding another vet, the lady I spoke with didn't even care to ask why. I would not recommend this Particular Banfield to anybody. The Doctor that owns this clinic is a horrible person and does not treat her employees and the clients animals very well. She does not care about the well being of the animals, I have personally seen her turn people away for not having sufficient funds to care for their pets and talk bad about them to her employees in the back, which I found to be very unprofessional. I have been a customer here for about 3 years because I didn't know any better.  I foolishly signed up for their highly over-priced wellness plan.  They have consistently been rude and too busy to provide good service.  Their employees are short with clients, too busy to remember my pets name and straight up confrontational!  I scheduled an appointment for my dogs annual comprehensive exam and they told me to drop my dog off at 0730 and when i get there, the girl tells me that their computers are done and turns her back to me, when I ask her if anything can be done, she looks at me like I'm stupid and rolls her eyes, telling me that I have to wait 20 minutes until the computer comes up.  I'm the only customer there and she couldn't have me fill out paperwork or weigh my dog?  Clearly these folks are doing so well that they don't need customers.  Most importantly, my thought on this last visit was if they were so rude to me, how were they treating my dog who can't speak?  At that point I told the girl that I had no intention of waiting another minute for such rude service.  Don't waste your time or your money.  A conversation with owner only got me an explanation of why this employee was soo rude.  Really?  I'm supposed to give my hard earned to people who treat me poorly?  I don't think so.  Be smarter than me, find an excellent local vet who will treat your pet like family and not like another cog in the wheel.  F- Read Less
