Polo Springs Veterinary Hospital

Colorado Springs, Colorado
General Info
The veterinary services provided by Polo Springs Veterinary Hospital in Colorado Springs integrate into a pet’s routine as a natural element instead of a disruptive event while they deliver steady care to families across Colorado. Animals initiate their entry at individual speeds from the beginning of the visit. Staff observe their movement patterns through the space while noting the time taken to settle and identifying which sensory cues of touch sound or scent elicit the strongest responses. Examinations encompass thorough assessments of hydration levels, skin elasticity, limb mobility, dental health, coat condition and weight distribution while engaging in detailed discussions about recent sleep alterations, feeding patterns and household energy fluctuations. Polo Springs Veterinary Hospital delivers a range of services including vaccinations, bloodwork, mobility care, dental planning, preventive guidance along with surgical support and long-term care discussions. Service offerings for pets either progress step-by-step or become unified depending on their sensory inclinations. Certain families opt for care delivery through numerous brief visits yet others select single concentrated appointments supplemented by post-care resources. Each plan develops based on the family's capability to execute which includes consideration of caregiver emotional burden pet resilience transportation availability and household scheduling habits. Medical appointments provide dedicated sections for questions, side notes, and story-sharing which prove especially beneficial for new adopters and chronic condition managers. Pet families in Colorado Springs and nearby Colorado areas find support at Polo Springs Veterinary Hospital to integrate care into their daily lives as a natural rhythm without fear or avoidance, which opens opportunities for connection and long-term wellness practices.

They are definitely pricier and often want to run tests before they are willing to prescribe antibiotics, which is always what I ultimately end up getting. However, they have great staff. I love Dr. Mackintosh and the techs I have worked with. I’ve taken plenty of my pets there and they have always been friendly. They often do follow up calls to make sure things are going well. They remember me and will ask about other pets I’ve brought in. They can always get my an appointment that day. They have amazing hours that work with my schedule. Their fee to have my pets stay there during the day is great. I love this vet and now that I know them better, I definitely feel more comfortable saying no to tests I don’t feel like I need for my pets. Read Less

I took my 12 week old Husky puppy there last night and they were so amazing. They not only made Meiko feel loved and important to them... they also made me feel important. I had the sniffles and one of the guys who worked there noticed and took time to bring me Kleenex and a clean trash can. The vet tech Ann who was taking care of us was amazing and his vet Mrs. McIntosh both explained everything to me... answered all my questions and explained everything in detail. Ann even called this afternoon just to check on him and left a message cause I was busy. Meiko is doing great. The probiotics in one dose has made a difference in his stool and frequency. I am glad I was also told about Meiko being a perfect weight I thought he looked skinny, but he isnt at all. He's been very comfortable and has been more relaxed and even more loving. We are so happy that we found a great vet to take care of him. We can't wait to see you in a few weeks for his next visit. Thank you all for making us feel comfortable. Read Less

We went here bc our normal vet was booked for awhile (that's a good sign) this place was avaliable to do a checkup on a puppy we just got. We had the booklet that showed when the vaccinations were done but not the official paperwork (from the original lady)The vet tech said that they tried to call the vet but needed all this unnecessary info to get the official records. Then she said the place was closed.they practically held us hostage and kept implying basically if we didn't get 361.00 in vaccinations that day our puppy was in danger, we said multiple times to let us just verify what she has gotten first then we will do the rest. I've not been treated like that ever at a vet. That place is hungry for money and made us feel like bad pet owners, we brought our dog there bc we love her. By the way we called the original vet right when we got out and they were open and emailed us right away the only info we gave was dogs name, breed and date she was born all the things this vet had bc we handed it to them, so I guess they are liars too.needless to say we don't go back or recommend them to anyoneRead Less

Sorry this is so long. But here's the whole story: The people here are very good at explaining their approach and explaining their charges up front, which is admirable. However they are terrible diagnosticians and rely on exorbitant, shot gun testing medicine. Medicine, including veterinary medicine is an art and a science. There is no art here, except for the emptying of your wallet. I should have guessed that with the coffee bar, cathedral ceilings and glass walled operating room where you supposedly can watch. My Jack Russell, had a couple of tiny seizure like episodes on a Thursday night. After his "seizure" his gums were white. On the reference of a friend (who had to start a Go Fund Me to pay their bill) I called Polo Springs and they gave me an appointment for the next day, Friday. They suggested a blood workup, which came to some two hundred fifty dollars, I agreed and went home. That night the Dr. called, said his blood work was normal except for a slight anemia. She spent a generous amount of time discussing the many possibilities and since he had developed a heart murmur, suggested a cardio workup, which included Xrays and ECG the next day. This would also incur a day care charge unless I wanted to sit there the entire day since they squeeze the testing in between other clients. They also suggested multiple back Xrays. Although he had no neurological deficits, he appeared to have back pain and "might have a disc issue." I questioned this since 1)he never had back pain before and 2) I'm a massage therapist and he got manipulated a lot and he never showed any signs of back pain. Ever. She also suggested doing a pancreatic work up, even though pancreatic issues in dogs tend to be in overweight, under exercised dogs. Not remotely the case here. The whole enchilada would START at about $2K so I suggested going one step at a time and doing just the heart workup.I returned Saturday and saw a different vet. They found nothing significant on the Xrays and could not successfully complete the ECG because he was stressed and whimpered too much. I took him home. He had another small seizure. I've had epileptic dogs before and this was not epilepsy, there was no post seizure aura. He was fully conscious. I was offered the opportunity to send the Xrays to a radiologist, which I accepted (for an additional charge of course) because in my experience, radiologists are skilled in finding things that the average GP does not.He continued to deteriorate Sunday and I noticed that his rib cage was becoming even more distended on the left side. I began to fear a splenic tumor. I had a dog die of that two years previous and it's very common. Monday I began looking for alternative vets in the Springs area. I was able to get an appointment with Dr. Friedly for Tues afternoon. However Polo Springs would not release Iggy's records unless I went in person (they couldn't email me the forms) which was 30 miles away. So I drove there, signed the forms and got a prescription for antibiotics, "just in case." At this point my bill at Polo Springs was just under $1000. There were more snafu's regarding the radiology report. Finally, I got the news that there were small malignancies in the lungs, meaning Iggy had a cancer that had metastisized. So not a heart issue, or back pain, or pancreatitis. It was in fact, what I had diagnosed, a bleeding, cancerous, splenic tumor. Hence the white gums after the seizures, which were actually syncopes, or a disorientation from sudden loss of blood or blood pressure.Tuesday afternoon I took him to Dr. Friedly just to confirm my suspicions and see if acupuncture would do him any palliative good. He said no, that he wasn't in a lot of pain and had probably a couple of days. Also that a heart murmur often accompanies the bleeding tumors since the heart is working so hard. Hello... clue. Additionally, high tech Polo was not able to send his Xrays because they were having "technical problems."I made the hard decision that night to call an at home euthanasia service to come the next day, Wed. Thursday was Thanksgiving, and dying of a burst splenic turmor is one of the worst ways a dog can die. I would not have him go, terrified and in immense pain. The next day Iggy was walking in circles, the cancer having spread to his brain. We spend the hours together, me trying to warm his cold feet. He barely had enough blood pressure to deliver the euthansia drug. The vet and tech from Peaceful Partings were beyond wonderful. The vet had lost her own dog to cancerous splenic tumor recently. It's very common, but not lucrative. So my one star is because in three days they managed to drain me of close to a thousand bucks. And in five days my dog was dead. Bad, bad medicine.  Don't go there.PS: Afterwards I got a condolence card with sweet little personal notes from more than a half dozen people there, most of whom I never met. Read Less

I have been using Polo Springs Veterinary Hospital since 1997. I have never known them to be anything but kind, caring, and professional. I brought my first dog (a dalmation, with fear aggression) here, because of a bad experience at another vet. They took great care with him,  and I was able to trust that he was receiving proper care. Soon after that, they opened up boarding facilities and I was grateful he had a safe place I could trust to take care of him when we needed to leave town. Eventually, when he passed on, the staff was caring and professional and helped to take care of all the details. In 2005 we adopted a Corgi mix, and Polo Springs has always taken care of his needs with caring efficiency. In 2007 we added a second dog to our family, and again we have trusted his care to Polo Springs.  I was astounded to see the 2 bad reviews, because this does not reflect the kind, caring staff I have come to know at Polo Springs. I will say that I agree their prices are a little high, but you get what you pay for, and in the case of Polo Springs Veterinary Hospital, that is a kind, caring, and knowledgeable staff. Read Less

I took my pets to Polo Springs when they first opened.  My Springer Spaniel died in their care from what they claimed was a cardiac arrest but I never blamed/questioned them as he was very sick when I brought him in that morning.  They were extremely expensive and looking back and having experience with other clinics, I can say mind blowingly so.  My other dog Vegas had his leg amputated this past April in Denver and the clinic who did this operation charged me $440 and did an excellent job (they always do) and excellent follow up care.  Polo Springs charged me $1500 in 1999 to take two small lumps from my Springer.   The worst issue goes along the other yelp one star comment from 2014.  After already going there for awhile and having spent a few thousand dollars, I came in and I had a conversation with the office/business manager who was the owner Dr.'s husband.  I asked him why they weren't on the list of vet clinics with discounted spay/neuter surgery if people adopted from the Humane Society of Pikes Peak region.  His response was so arrogant and obnoxious telling me that spay/neuter surgery is a big surgery like any other one and why should they discount it - people should pay for it full price if they want to have pets. (BTW, I participated in a cat neuter surgery and it was literally a 30 second process - so no, it is NOT a same surgery as other surgeries).  I was taken aback by his attitude and mentioned it to the doctor who cared for my pets at that time, Dr. Grover. Given the millions of animals killed in this country yearly, and how generally expensive veterinary care was,  I told her I really didn't appreciate that kind of uncaring attitude and that I thought it was disturbing for a vet care provider to feel that way. I came back a few weeks later and I was told at the front desk to leave that I am no longer allowed to come back.  I was there to pick up phenobarbital for my adopted severely epileptic dog and they refused to fill the prescription and kicked me out!  I did not owe them any money, the one and only reason they refused service is because I questioned their ethics.  My dog was out of phenobarbital at that point.  In addition when I called, Polo Springs refused to release my dog's blood work results and file over to another veterinarian. I had to file a complaint with the Colorado Board of Vet Medicine for them to do that and only as a result of this complaint they gave me one week of phenobarbital to get my dog over and faxed the information to Westside Animal Hospital that took good care of us at that point.I have since then ran a rescue for many years and have been to many other veterinarians with the rescue as well as my own pets.  With only one exception in 15 years, also in Colorado Springs, I have never come across a arrogant greedy unethical veterinarian clinic like this one again.   As a CPA I understand what it takes to run a business and how the bottom line works.  Maybe they should spend less on fancy coffee and over-sized self portrait in the lobby and more on actual caring for living breathing animals in need.  In addition, the vet clinic in Denver who did my Springer's leg amputation at such a reasonable price, makes money and is profitable while caring for dogs and working with people to get their pets cared for.  They are even expanding and moving to a brand new facility.   All this without taking payments (payment is required at the time of service) and without being hostile to the pet guardians when they have trouble coming up with funds.  They charge fair price, people find the way to pay it and care for their pets.  There is a big difference between making profit and being greedy and veterinary medicine should be one of the last places where you find greed.I know the responsibility that comes with pet ownership and I personally do what is necessary to have them taken care of even though it cost me close to 100,000 over 20 years. Polo Springs is an example how veterinary medicine should not be done and I would not recommend them to anyone. Read Less

Definitely one of the best experiences I've ever had. Had an emergency with my pet and they were able to get me in only 30 minutes after calling. You can tell that the veterinarians and technicians are passionate about helping out your pet. After I was able to take my pet home the technician called later that night to check in and make sure that he didn't get worst. This was definitely heart warming because I was worried and she wanted to make that if I needed anything just to call or stop in. When I first moved to Colorado, I took our pets here because I thought they were "the best in town", but every appointment ended up costing a minimum of $200 no matter what (shots, wellness exam, dental cleaning). At one point our dog cut a tendon in his foot and we were quoted $1,800!  I told them we couldn't afford that, and asked about a payment plan - to which I was told, "Well, you can always consider that if you can't afford your pets then maybe you should let them go."WHAT?!?  I sat in my car and cried trying to figure out how to come up with the money to help him, and finally started calling around.  I found another vet who quoted me $650 for the SAME PROCEDURE.  My dog recovered perfectly, and all of our regular appointments since AT THE NEW VET are cost appropriate, and in the case of higher-cost procedures they do offer a payment program.

Read Less
