Dr Sharkey is amazing. From the first time he meets with you, you feel that he really cares about your pets. The office is in an old house which I personally really like. There is no up-selling, no excessive tests, just a super knowledgeable doctor who has treated our dogs many times and his diagnoses have always been spot-on. If you've been looking for an excellent, locally-owned Veterinary Clinic in the Mayfair area of East Denver, I highly recommend Drs. Sharkey for your pets. They are caring, reasonably priced and offer full-service, including surgery. They do not offer a weekend kennel, but they're perfect for those of us who want to have a reliable, recognizable and family-friendly clinic for our pets. Their staff is just as caring and very knowledgeable, too. I was literally driven away from the Corporate Clinics that introduced financial sheep-shearing as they have gobbled up Independent Veterinary outlets, raised prices and demand unnecessary testing and services. It's only our first visit. A friend recommended this clinic. It took only a couple of days to get an appointment. Dr. Steve is very personable and explains everything in "lay" terms. He was super sweet with our cat Patches. I think we found our new permanent vet for all our three creatures. I like the simplicity of the practice. Everyone in this practice from the receptionist to the actual vet, Dr(s) Sharkey are the most compassionate individuals and as a group are willing to move a mountain to make sure your fur baby is comfortable and cared for. They don't neglect the humans either, as I do have the inclination to handle anything to do with my fur kids like Shirley McClaine in Terms of Endearment. Dr Sharkey, god love him, is nothing short of a saint...with me. I've been taking my dog here for years, since before the new ownership.  The old vet was great and the new vet is also very kind and has taken great care of our aging dog.  My dog gets really scared when we go and the vet kisses her on the head sometimes to make her comfortable.  This vet is no frills and is totally legit.  It feels like one of the last old school Denver small businesses. Dr. Sharkey and his staff were terrific. We brought in our newly adopted dog for a shelter check up. Everyone in the office was friendly and professional. When he was examining Ellie, Dr. Sharkey treated her like she was his own dog. He got down on the floor at her level and he was so kind and caring. He is so patient and truly wants to educate you. I always feel very comfortable with my dogs in his care. Dr. Steve Sharkey in magnificent!  I have never been to a vet who unscrews the cat carrier top to gently lift the cat out.  Every other place I've been either tips the crate and dumps the cat out or grabs the cat by the scruff.  Dr. Sharkey is so gentle and kind and thorough and not rushed.  No assembly lines, here!  Montclair Animal Clinic was fabulous under Dr. Sargent and remains fabulous under Drs. In the era of boutique vet clinics that tend to over-charge and lack perspective, our experience in taking our cat (healthy) and dog (with hip dysplasia) to Dr. Steve Sharkey and his staff at Montclair Animal Clinic has been such a breath of fresh air. Dr. Sharkey clearly keeps up-to-date with the latest evidence-based practice and doesn't push treatments that aren't proven (and if he offers them as an option, he is very honest in tempering expectations). This was especially true for our dog with hip dysplasia, and we really appreciated his honesty. We have been going to this animal clinic for about 30 years, initially with Dr. Sargent, now with the Drs. Sharkey.  They have always been very understanding with our pets, done a great job, and not ordered excessive testing.  Our dogs have not had any major acute illnesses, but the clinic has saved the life of a friend's dog that had a severe allergic reaction.  I recommend them highly, it is a small practice with a personal touch. I found Montclair Animal Clinic after not being very happy with another vet I started seeing when I moved to the Denver area. I had known Dr. Steve and Dr. Tina Sharkey several years prior on a personal level, and they had assisted me with the dog I had at that time. I remembered that all those years ago Dr. Tina Sharkey was working at a vet clinic in the greater Denver area so I did an internet search to find out where she was. I was please to discover they had opened their own practice, and it is literally a mile from where I am now living.I saw Dr. Steve Sharkey (because that was the day I happened to have off of work). He was pleased to see me after so many years. He took great care of my dog (a Belgian Malinois). My boy has some special issues, and I didn't want to take up too much of Dr. Sharkey's time going over everything I had tried. Dr. Sharkey actively listened to my concerns, and gave me some great information. He was happy to refill the prescription that my dog needed. He got down on the floor with Porthos several times and had hair ALL over him. Porthos just loved him. For the vet visit, the prescription, and the office visit, I paid just over $100 (I can't remember exactly) the other vet I had originally taken him to wanted over $200 for the blood work alone! A couple days later Dr. Steve Sharkey called me to check on Porthos and give me the results of his blood work. He offered some additional suggestions and probably spent an additional 20 min on the phone with me. It is so nice having vets I know and trust so close by. My dog is my only family, and he means the world to me. You could say I'm obsessed with my dog, you know, the crazy dog lady. But I feel safe taking Porthos to see either Dr. Sharkey. They are kind hearted, honest, knowledgeable people. I seriously can not say enough good things about them. The one little thing I wasn't as impressed with was the receptionist. When I was checking out she acted like she didn't have time for me. She was perturbed when I asked for their fax number so I could have my dogs medical records faxed over (as Dr. Sharkey requested). She gave a big sigh, grabbed my receipt out of my hand, scribbled the number and kind of threw it back at me. Although I didn't care for her, both Dr. Sharkey's are work seeing! I'm so glad we found Montclair. We've been patients here for almost 15 years. The care is the very best. The clinic is smaller, independent (no big retail chains here) and no-frills. It's just very personal, where the whole staff know us and our dogs. If there is a specialty service that they can't provide (like advanced cancer care) the docs here work closely with outside specialists. I wish my own human medical care was this good. Read Less

My family has been going to Montclair Animal Clinic since 1999. They are attentive, sweet, caring, and professional. When our 15 year old dog had to be put down, they offered a shoulder to cry on for our entire family. And let me tell ya- it was ugly crying, with boogers and everything. A year later, we adopted two small dogs from dumb friends league and boy are they a handful. Too old to be socialized and full of anxiety, they can get crazy when we take them to the vet. Dr. Sharkey and the staff work their magic and get them to calm down and are all very patient. Their hours are great and you don't have to wait days to get seen. It is nice to have a vet office close to home with a good staff and responsible care.  We have used this practice for shots, exams, referrals for major surgeries and different medical issues.  Dr. Steve Sharkey is very kind to our sweet Rottweiler and is thoughtful in his follow up of appointments.  Susan is a great tech and I'm always amazed how Lisa remembers everyone when she takes the calls. This is a great old school vet clinic where the vet creates a relationship with the animals and their owners and gets things done.  We had one dog with some serious 'GI (gut)  issues', then our other one caught it.  We tried to get in to our normal clinic (unnamed large national chain) that we had been seeing for over twenty five years (starting way before they got bought out) and but 'they couldn't fit us in' (Oh, unless we came to their Emergency $$$$ Clinic--then they could get us in ! !)So we went where a lot of our friends had been going for years--Dr. Sargent's Montclair Animal Clinic.  A married couple is slowly taking over the business from Dr. Sargent and we saw Dr. Steve Sharkey.  He gave the dogs and exam, did the lab work, gave us our prescriptions and had us out of there in less than an hour.  And the dogs were healthy and well by the next morning.We're thrilled and this is where we'll be going in the future. After our then young puppy was due for fixing, the vet we had been using said it would be $600, plus more for pain pills. This was 8 years ago!!! Needless to say, it was time to change.I asked several neighbors who they used, and Montclair Animal clinic came up several times. I have never been sorry I changed to this clinic. I won't return to this place again.  At first it seemed the staff was nice.  But then they started snide little remarks about preferring me to be early for appts.  The last straw was when my dog tore his duclaw.  I called to ask for advice.  They told me the vet would call me.  The vet called me at work while I was on break.  We went back and forth for awhile but then the receptionist said she would have the vet call me after her last patient.  She didn't call me.  I called back and she said she said the vet had left and that she had forgotten to call me back.  Then when she said I could just call any other place I decided to take my business elsewhere for good!
