I now know why they only have three stars. I took my puppy to the Pueblo Area Pet Emergency last night (12/30/2020) because I was worried he was dying of parvovirus. After waiting nearly 30 minutes for someone to come out they didn't come out to check my puppy, they came out to take my drivers license, SS number, and take care of paperwork to make sure they got paid. Another 15-20 minutes went by they finally came out with the parvovirus test kit. After another 10-15 minutes they returned and told me the test was negative, and the puppy probably ate something that didn't agree with him. I was relieved to hear the news, and was told I needed to wait to talk to the vet on the phone. Another 10-15 minutes went by, and the vet called only to tell me my puppy was dying from parvovirus, and I needed to take him to the ER in Colorado Springs immediately, not to wait I needed to go now! That's what we done. We left immediately without waiting like the vet said. As we're heading towards Colorado Springs I called the Pueblo Area Pet Emergency back for directions only to be told I needed to turn around, come back, and sign the bill, and they would give me the name and address to the ER in Colorado Springs. We turned around and went back taking another 15-20 minutes just so they can have my signature. On our way back to Colorado Springs my little puppy cried out in pain and then died in my arms. We drove on to Colorado Springs with me holding the dead puppy only to hand him over for cremation at the ER. The next day (12/31/2020) I called Pueblo Area Pet Emergency to ask why they insisted on us turning around and coming back rather than giving us the address we desperately needed. They first got upset and hung up on me. I called back and spoke to someone else who was willing to listen, but when I was finished he blamed me for following the vets orders and leaving for Colorado Springs immediately and not signing the bill. They could have given me the name and address when we were on the road so I could have gotten my puppy there quicker, but instead they needed my signature so they could receive payment. They put profit over my puppy. They had everything they needed to bill me. They had my licences, my address, and my SS number, but it wasn't enough, they needed my signature. The two people I talked to never once offered me sympathy for the loss of my puppy. They only said sorry you feel that way when I told them I was going to write this review. They'll most likely have a rebuttal claiming it's my fault for walking the dog where I shouldn't have, or I waited to long to bring him in or I left in a hurry and should have waited on them to come back out. All of this might be true, and I accept full responsibility. What I won't accept is their callous actions, and their excuse for making us turn around and coming back before they would give me the address we needed. They showed no compassion for me or my puppy. Now I owe $155 for a parvovirus test they said was negative only for my puppy to die in my arms from parvovirus minutes later. There're two other pet emergency clinics in Pueblo. I wish I'd went to one of those instead of the Pueblo Area Pet Emergency. My little puppy might still be alive today. I recommend anyone reading this review do what I didn't and go somewhere else other than Pueblo Area Pet Emergency. Read Less

I was at this clinic 2 nights ago to have my dog treated. I was there late in the evening and did not encounter ANY of what these people with negative reviews are speaking of. On the contrary the staff was EXTREMELY helpful and more then compassionate toward my dog and myself. I gladly paid my office fee and completely agreed with their policies and procedures. After the doctor saw my dog their very informative nurse came back into the room with an estimate to inform me of the costs that I could incur with having my dog x-rayed and having blood work done to see what was wrong. After these tests were run the doctor came in and informed me of the results. She explained two choices I could go with, either hospitalize or take home after IV injections of antibiotics and anti vomiting medications and see my vet in the morning. I chose to hospitalize, and put on IV fluids and medications to treat his illness. I was all to glad to that have this done as I did not want my dog to suffer anymore. They again came in with an estimate to inform me of the charges I would incur for hospitalizing. I was so glad they did this so that I would not be caught off guard. I did not feel pressured or like I was being hounded. I was VERY HAPPY with their attentiveness especially this time of year when money is so tight for everyone. I feel like my pet is my child, if I can't afford his care then I probably shouldn't have him. When I arrived in the morning my baby was like a new dog. He was feeling so much better. The doctor suggested I take him over to his regular veterinarian for more fluid treatment to make sure that my baby was on the mend and for any further care he might need throughout the day. Which I did ! I can not thank the Doctors and Staff of this clinic for helping my little guy. They have a job to do just like everyone else, a very hard one, late at night when everyone else is asleep, they deal with all sorts of horrible things being done to pets that they see on a daily basis. Then they have to deal with such horrible individuals calling them names and bad mouthing their clinic. I for one am extremely glad they are here in Pueblo. We have no one else to go to late at night when our normal vets are closed. I love my vet but he doesn't want to come out in the middle of the night , in the cold to see a sick animal that's why he refers to these people. But they are there ! I'm sure that they have only made these rules because so many people have taken advantage of them and their services. It is shameful how these people that have previously posted reviews on here, have talked so badly about these magnificent people! THANK YOU! THANK YOU ! Staff of Pueblo Pet Emergency Hospital for being there and being you ! I even received a refund on my account when I checked out the next morning! Who does that now a days? I'm glad they were up front with me and there were no surprises in the morning. All I have to say is if you can't afford to take care of your pets people then don't have one BUT don't blame this hospital for your incompetence! Read Less

Wouldn’t see me unless I could afford to pay thousands up front. Denied helping my cat, the Hispanic woman that works weekends overnights is very rude and should not be allowed to work with anyone’s animals. First let us just say that we are sorry for your loss. However, What you fail to let people know is that you told us that your pet had been ill for several days prior to the weekend which meant you could have called your regular veterinarian during the week when it first became ill and I'm sure they would have seen it at a considerably cheaper rate if money was an issue for you. You did not even have the funds to pay for an office call. We can not be expected to treat an animal without getting some kind of compensation for it. We do not do any type of billing thanks to those who have received service for their pets and then failed to pay us. You aren't expected to do your job for free. We are here when other veterinarians aren't. We are very sorry that you were unable to get care for your pet. but we have spoke with several upstanding veterinarians here in Pueblo and almost everyone one of them expects payment at the time of service. SO WE AREN'T DOING ANYTHING NEW! SO WHY ARE WE THE BAD GUYS HERE? You are going to pay more for EMERGENCY SERVICES ! We are very compassionate people, we ALL have pets of our own but we also have a job to do and we have rules to follow in order for us to be able to provide care for so many other patients. We are sorry that your encounter with our technician was not to your liking. However, she also has a job to do and she has a witness who states otherwise. We understand you are upset during this very difficult time and we are going to be blamed no matter what. However, when telling people what happened to you it is always best to state all the facts, not just those that you feel were unfair. We did try to help your cat but you failed to be able to pay for his care and that is not our fault. We wish you the best of luck in finding care in the future.

The vet was not very nice she was rude and could tell she did not care for certain breed of dog! Went to the mesa vet office very next day cost me 170 bucks and both my boys are just fine sounds cleaned and shaved and everything was great there the staff as the Mesa Clinic were just amazing neither of my boys had to have muzzles put on them they both got scrubbed and I got to be in there while they washed them. In researching your case our doctor offered to sedate your dogs and clean, clip and sew up wound on both dogs. YOU are the one who refused these treatments and only wanted pain medications and antibiotic injections. We give estimates so that you have a choice for us to care for your pet or not. If you choose NO then we don't provide those services. WE ARE GOING TO BE MORE EXPENSIVE THEN A REGULAR VETERINARIAN BECAUSE WE ARE AN EMERGENCY CLINIC! Your dog was muzzled because it lunged at our staff. We do not judge animals by their breed as WE TREAT ALL BREEDS. but when an animal, no matter what the breed, shows aggression we have to do what it takes to keep our staff and doctors safe. He was probably just painful but precautions have to be taken for his safety and ours. We are sorry that you were disappointed in the care they received but we did what you asked us to do. Since you do go to MESA then please be aware that they do see their OWN clients on emergency when they are available for any further assistance you may need in the future.

Very disappointed!!! 👎🏻 Don’t even give them one star!!! We are from out of town and we’re here to have a weekend of enjoyment....after an accident and having looked up on the internet for a place open after 7 pm we found this emergency care for pets. We were greeted with an uninformed person on the phone that couldn’t give directions to find the place, stated “look it up on google”. With a popping, puking, bloody, puppy struggling to breathe in my arms. My husband trying to drive through traffic in Pueblo. We are supposed to google it!!!! Upon arriving, we were greeted with sympathy and compassion, not knowing that behind the scenes we were being turned in for animal cruelty!!!! Very two faced Veterinarian. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 Not only had sympathy for deciding to put the pup down, 😢 but told us it was the best thing to do under the circumstances!!! Through all of our tears and heart ache. 😭 The next morning we were greeted with an Animal Control Officer stating he was there to investigate us us for animal cruelty!!!!😡 After a 2 day investigation, interviews of grand child, (which opened up more sorrow) the neighbors in the camp ground, an autopsy of our pup, we were cleared of any wrong doing. What an enjoyable weekend!!!😳😡 DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE!!!!!!!👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 Read Less

We are very sorry for your loss and the accident surrounding what led up to his passing. We are not aware of any Animal Control Officers being sent to you by any of our doctors or staff. We performed CPR on your puppy several times after he came to our clinic after being choked. We did everything we could when the doctor came to you and explained the situation and his grave prognosis. We know that opting for euthanasia was not an easy choice but the best thing for him at that time. We are sorry that whomever you spoke to was not able to give you proper directions to get here. However, we are not really sure why we are being blamed for this unfortunate occurrence and it's outcome. Animal Control was not sent there by us.

I took my little dog in to this clinic. I was told he was terminally ill. He was doing better, so I decided to take him home until his quality of life required euthanasia. The doctor gave me pain medications, and she advised me that she would refill them, if needed given the situation. He is doing fairly well, But he needed the medication refilled. I called two days ago, and I was told to come in. Tonight I was told that the prior doctor had lied, and they refuse to fill my dogs presciptions. We are sorry for your inconvenience. We are not really sure that you were told that our veterinarian LIED. LYING is not part of our regular practice. We are not sure which veterinarian you saw. However, we do have some relief veterinarians that come in and help from time to time and maybe that is who you saw and they did not follow our policy. Our normal policy is to ALWAYS recommend that you see your regular vet for continued care and prescription refills so that they are in the loop of what care and medications your pet is getting, hence the reason we send records to ALL local veterinarians. We can not continue to fill prescriptions for pets that we do not see on a regular basis. Again, we are sorry for your inconvenience but lying was not the issue, just an unfortunate miscommunication.

Completely impressed with the staff and their care. There were several emergencies that came in at the same time as us. They handled each party quickly and calmly. I was also impressed that they treated the animals, not as animals, but as our children. They provided the animals with blankets to comfort them, they spoke to them to comfort the dogs and cats, they treated all the animals amazingly. Our son came in with trauma to the face, although they were not able to do the surgery there, the doctor and staff stablized our son so we could get him to another vet. UPDATE: The week after having put our beloved dog down, I received a beautiful card and note from this hospital. Inside was a pawprint heart with flower seeds embedded in the heart to plant and have flowers in memory of our pet. Thank you so much. This meant everything to me. We took our 14 year old poodle in because she was having bloody stools and having a hard time going to the bathroom. The staff was excellent and very caring. The vet discovered our dog had a mass blocking her colon. Because of her age and other health problems we decided to have her put down. The staff did present options for final care but we didn't feel pressured into any one plan. They respected our decision and made me feel we had made the right decision even though we chose the less expensive way to go. I did not feel the cost was outrageous. Vet bills are costly but so is everything else. I highly recommend this pet hospital. We are not from Pueblo, just here visiting and really appreciate the help and the caring the staff provided. First and foremost we do not even have anyone by your name coming to our clinic for treatments. We don't accuse people of giving their pets Marijuana, we ask if there is a possibility of your pet getting a hold of the Marijuana. When an animal come into us showing all the signs of Marijuana toxicity. we have to ask questions just like any doctor. In this day and age these thing happen. But we can't treat an animal with out some kind of idea of what we are treating for.

Sir you fail to let people reading this know that your animal came in with a huge abccess near his skull, that needed to be drained. Not only did it need to be drained it needed to be cleaned out. In order to do this an animal has to be anesthetized, given pain and antibiotic injections. Not to mention sent home on pain medications and antibiotics. We presented you with a reasonable estimate to perform these services and YOU sir are the one who refused ALL TREATMENTS. The only thing you wanted was antibiotics to take the dog home on. We always recommend best medicine to help your pet however if you choose not to have us perform the best medicine needed then we have no recourse but to do what YOU ask. By the way it takes ALL of our doctors more then 5 minutes in a room with a patient just to do an exam not to mention explain what their course of treatment plan is. I am sorry that you were un happy with the care you received. however, we did do what you the client asked us to do. We wish you the best of luck in your future veterinary care.

We are sorry that you were not happy with your services. What most people do not understand is that we have to get payment for the time of service. Unfortunately, thanks to quite a few people who received services from us and then never paid we have had to make it a priority to get payments from our clients. Even though it took you a while to come up with your payment we still continued to treat your cat and its injuries. We are sorry that you felt badgered but we have to have payment on critical patients prior to being able to start any kind of treatment. Some of our shifts are scheduled with 1 doctor and 1 tech so this may have been the case as to why you were not constantly updated on your pets condition. However, it is our understanding then when we called you a couple days later to follow up on how your pet was recovering, it was doing very well.

She ran out of her medication on Memorial Day so obviously none of the vets in the area were open. We called this place to see about a prescription refill, and we were hung up on several before finally getting an answer. Then they sent us to 2 different pharmacies in Pueblo, claiming we could get them refilled there. After this was unsuccessful, they told us we had to come to their office. THEN, they told us they could not refill it there unless our dog was with us (we left her with friends because she cannot be left unattended without her medicine). brought my dog here at 10:30pm maybe a month ago because she seemed to be having a seizure. let me start by saying, my fiancé works in the industry, growing fully matured marijuana plants. so, when we finally met with the vet, she remarked that we "smelled like weed" and that our dog must have had some. i explained to her that we didn't even have any buds at the house, and the only thing that my dog had gotten into was a tomato that my roommate fed her. still, the doctor made us pay for drug testing. the dog was not on drugs, because like i said, we didn't even have any drugs. then the vet said she didn't know what it could be and she sent us home. no further testing, no aftercare, and on the discharge papers she had remarked that we were "having a party" and that we "stank like weed". we will never know what actually happened to my dog that night because the doctor only wanted to see if my dog was high. gotta love being discriminated against when you are only seeking out help. Dear Ms Pretzman, IT IS BEST TO GIVE PEOPLE ALL OF THE FACTS AND BOTH SIDES OF THE STORY !!! In further researching our records from your visit with us YOU ADMITTED to us on presentation that you had a party at your house that day prior to bringing your pet in. YOU admitted that you had marijuana buds in the house and that there was alcohol consumed at your party. YOU also admitted to the fact that anyone at your party could have given your pet something. Yes it is in your record because it is part of the examination history. It's a law that we have to put that information in the history record. We also have to rule out all possibilities of what could be causing your pets problems. We can't just treat a pet for whatever. We suggested a drug screening to rule out marijuana or any other drug toxicity since you admitted to not knowing if anyone gave her anything, alcohol included. You were not discriminated against when you admitted to such facts. You were sent home with further care instructions on your discharge papers that you got upon leaving. No further care was needed if she continued to get better, which she was. I hope you can find a clinic that fits your needs if you ever need any future care for your pet.

I went to this clinic with my sister one early morning with her kitty who had been vomiting. The lady at the front desk, De was so very nice. She was knowledgeable, helpful and made us feel very comfortable. She took us back to an exam room and proceeded to check all of her vitals. She told us the doctor would be right in,and she was, I remember her name being Cheryl. She was extremely knowledgeable. I liked the way they printed an estimate of fees out and explained what everything was to my sister and why they suggested doing it. My sister is on a fixed income and we explained that to them, they were very understanding. So they re- did the estimate down to the bare minimum with what would get her through the night until she could see her normal vet where she could make payments. We agreed to injections to stop the vomiting, which it did and saw her vet in the morning. Her vet was very happy with our decision to go to this clinic and highly recommends them. Her kitty was fine and did not end up spending the day at her clinic thanks to what Dr. Cheryl and De did for her. I highly recommend this clinic and so does my sister. Thank you ! Read Less

You people who left negative reviews, above should be ABSOLUTELY ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES !!! These people are amazing and very compassionate. These people have a very difficult job, they see a lot of horrible things done to animals from owners who neglect their pets. It's just like having a child, IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO TAKE CARE OF AN ANIMAL THEN YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE ONE!!!! YOU DON'T EXPECT TO GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM AND NOT HAVE TO PAY !! You have insurance or you live off the government, unfortunately they don't have that option for pets. I went to this clinic with my daughter despite some of these negative reviews and was never so happy with the treatment and compassion given to not only my daughter and her dog but myself. The nurse we saw was very knowledgeable and when I asked, she had been a veterinary nurse for over 20 years. When we saw the veterinarian she explained everything that was going on with my daughters dog extremely well and with words we could understand. My daughters dog was very critical with an intestinal issue, blood work and xrays were done, she was hospitalized overnight and when we picked her up Monday morning she was like a new dog. We could not have been happier. We did have to take her to our regular vet for continued care but that was to be expected. Were they expensive, not anymore expensive then if we would have had to drive back and forth to springs for care there and it was well worth it when my grandpuppy came out wagging her tail. In my eyes. The veterinarian and her nurse were amazing and I would go there again in a heartbeat, in fact I wish they had a day practice ! Thank you for saving our baby !!! Read Less

What a beautiful facility! Why wouldn't it be? They run unnecessary tests and charge astronomical amounts. My last experience with them was nearly 2 years ago. Took my GSD in on a Sunday afternoon, they said they couldn't do a abdominal tap to see if there was blood in her abdomen because they did not know what organ was affected. OK, not my 1st rodeo. They kept my girl overnight with IV fluids $800. I picked her up Monday morning and took her to my regular vet where she stayed all day for observation. She seemed ok Tuesday but by Wednesday morning she took a turn for the worse. I feel that my baby suffered the last 2 days of her life, without reason. They called nearly a week later to see how she was doing. This place is about money. Read Less

Worst vet experience of my life. Staff is rude, not experienced, & disrespectful. The UNCERTIFIED nurses made my dog cry out in pain multiple times because they don't know what they are doing. Doctor said she would give us a pamphlet on a disease but only went on google to print out a description of what I thought was going on with my dog. Weighed my dog 8lbs under his norm weight then argued with me about how fast he is losing weight. Went to a REAL VET after the weekend & they weighed him multiple times getting the same weight he has always been. Argued with me that my dogs stomach was not an issue & something else was wrong, went to a REAL VET after the weekend to learn that he has stomach ulcers & is very backed up. Finally after I begged for an anima for my dog they gave me one & the UNCERTIFIED "nurses" again made him cry out in pain from grabbing his so roughly while just picking him up. I will never go back to this place unless I have a death wish for my dog. Disgusting excuse for a veterinary service. Read Less

*This isn't a review on their service but an encounter with them* So on Saturday August 13th, a stray dog had came into our yard. We called animal control and they were out on an emergency call so they told us to take it here so they can hold the dog until they were able to come and get him to take him to the shelter. When we got there the receptionist (whom in which the word 'rude' can't even describe') was like 'What's going on here?'  When we told her animal control sent us she said she couldn't do anything with the dog unless animal control was there. We tried explaining they sent us there cause they were busy... and she told us 'I can't do anything with you for atleast two hours.' and walked away. I have never been treated like that.. especially from a place that's supposed to HELP. never in a million years would I even take a dog in need of help here. The front office receptionist wasn't even compassionate to the other people in the office with sick dogs. Unbelievable. Read Less

I took an animal that swallowed something in to this clinic. I had called ahead and explained the details of the situation. They told me I definitely needed to bring my animal in. I rushed in there, they did an exam and then while talking with us informed us they did not have the equipment to retrieve the object. I ended up having to then drive to  Colorado Springs to an emergency animal hospital. This wasted time was the difference between being able to retrieve the object with a scope vs surgery. This place in pueblo charged us $85 for nothing and they could have told us when we called before every going there that they did not have an endoscope, if they had we would not have wasted $85 before getting to a place that could help. I will NEVER take an animal to this place. What a rip off, and then we had to go spend even more money at another place. The emergency animal hospital in the springs was awesome. They said time is critical with these types of cases and unfortunately the amount of time wasted because of the clinic in pueblo the object was where the wisest option was surgery and if we had gone to the place in Colorado Springs first they could have gotten it with the scope. Basically, because of this place my pet ended up having to have surgery all because they wanted money and couldn't be honest and upfront about not having the equipment for our situation. First off I'd like to make sure that everyone understands that there are 2 emergency hospitals. One bad and one good. This is NOT the bad one that Dr. Laas works. I have been to this emergency hospital before and have nothing but positive things to say about them. It is wonderful to have a place to take the furbabies when they get in trouble after hours, or in my case, on a Sunday. My hound, in his excitement with the other dogs, ripped off part of his body while he was running wildly too close to a piece of fencing sticking out. I rushed him the 40 miles to this hospital after having such a good experience with a puppy a couple of years ago that had a blockage. They quickly got Loki, the hound, into surgery within a half an hour. They couldn't replace the skin and had to do some fancy stitching to put this dog back together. 25 stitches and Loki looked like Frankin Puppy. But a beautiful job and he healed with no complications. Yes, they are expensive......but you get what you pay for, so suck it up and give up that money to fix your friend. Read Less

Read Less

They provided the animals with blankets to comfort them, they spoke to them to comfort the dogs and cats, they treated all the animals amazingly. Our son came in with trauma to the face, although they were not able to do the surgery there, the doctor and staff stablized our son so we could get him to another vet. I couldn't say enough of a thank you to them for taking care of our son and all the others that were there. Read Less

Thank you to the vet and her staff. Read Less

We have a golden retriever who struggles with seizures, and she takes medication to keep them at bay; without the medication she has seizures every few minutes. In addition to the terrible attitude and incompetence of the employees, they put our dog's life in danger. If we could give this place 0 stars, we would. Read Less

However, your failing to refill your pets prescription prior to a holiday weekend DOES NOT MAKE US A BAD CLINIC. Nor does it make US incompetent, you are the one who put your dogs life in danger and I am sorry that giving us a bad review is what you felt you needed to do in this situation. They charge for literally everything you can think of from emergency cpr to blood pressure, including all the regular expenses. brought my dog here at 10:30pm maybe a month ago because she seemed to be having a seizure. let me start by saying, my fiancé works in the industry, growing fully matured marijuana plants. so, when we finally met with the vet, she remarked that we "smelled like weed" and that our dog must have had some. i explained to her that we didn't even have any buds at the house, and the only thing that my dog had gotten into was a tomato that my roommate fed her. still, the doctor made us pay for drug testing. the dog was not on drugs, because like i said, we didn't even have any drugs. then the vet said she didn't know what it could be and she sent us home. no further testing, no aftercare, and on the discharge papers she had remarked that we were "having a party" and that we "stank like weed". we will never know what actually happened to my dog that night because the doctor only wanted to see if my dog was high. gotta love being discriminated against when you are only seeking out help.

Read Less
