Three days ago, Apr 15 at 6:30, AM my 12 year old best friend, the most beautiful, bravest black German Shepherd Dog in the world, suddenly collapsed without warning. She lay there dazed while I stood over her shocked and wondering, is this serious? Was it the fish oil pill last night? If I made her rice, went to work and came back she'd probably be feeling fine like always, right? About 5 minutes later I woke up and realized, hell yes, it's serious. I carried her to the car and drove to two different emergency clinics that were technically open, but without a veterinarian in yet. Finally, I found Northside. Dr. Berndt and a tech (I'm sorry I do not remember her name) were the only ones on staff; they got my girl in on a gurney and worked like mad women to save her. I was brought back to stand over my dog and I saw these women literally running back and forth across the room in the process of diagnosing and stabilizing her. I was so touched at the way Dr. Berndt loudly complained, several times, that the other waiting customers could shove it if they got impatient that a dog with an abdominal hemorrhage had priority over everything.Apparently my always invincible best friend had a spleen tumor that had ruptured, and there was 90% chance it was cancerous (hemangiosarcoma). There was a surgery but even if she survived that it might give her only 3 extra months. I could not believe it, it was so devastating, she had seemed great and had just been to the vet a few weeks ago. Dr. Berndt kindly but firmly explained to me how poor a prognosis this was but that she, personally, would do the surgery. She advised me to make some calls and decide. In the end, my husband and I chose to do the surgery, and Dr. Berndt and her assistant again flew all over the place to get my dog ready to be moved to another clinic for surgery. My dog died in surgery because the tumor had grown into an artery, so she never had a chance, but I am so glad we chose to do it, because she deserved everything I had to give.I really just want to thank Dr. Berndt and Northside for trying so hard to save my dog. You never know when you're going to have an emergency, and chances are you've never looked up what emergency options there are around you until you need one ASAP. I didn't have the time to find the "best" emergency clinic and most clinics were not even open given the time of morning. But Northside really came through and did their absolute best. You don't have to look very hard in a time of crisis to find a clinic that will take care of you, it's this one. Read Less
