I was a customer here for 6 years. The first 5 were great, my dogs were well taken care of, the staff was professional but super polite and loving, and the overall experience was above average every time.   A while back, the management and staff completely changed. I called the other day because my dog was very sick and the receptionist put me on hold. I waited for 5 minutes on hold until my young daughter hung up accidentally. Upon calling back I explained that to the receptionist and apologized, buy she was in a huff and put me on hold again. After waiting another 5 minutes, she came back on and told me the doctor would not be able to see my dog until 4:30pm, and I should go to the ER instead. I told her I would just take him to a new vet (the ER charges an arm and a leg) and she said "ok, we will send his paperwork." Didn't even care they were just losing a long time customer.   Well, my poor dog was finally seen, by our new vets at Norwalk Animal Hospital. I guess I should be thanking HAH, because when you brushed us aside, we found a wonderful place who took prompt and thorough care of my pup.   I hate writing bad reviews, especially since I used to love it at Highway, but sadly it was not an experience I would want anyone else to go through. After my recent experience with Highway Animal Hospital, I wouldn't trust them with my houseplant let alone my pet! I am very unhappy with Highway Animal hospital! I took my cat there earlier in the week because we knew he was sick and weren't sure what was wrong. The Vet here told us that after doing blood work he didn't see anything wrong with my cat except for an ear infection. He told us to put prescription drops in his ears twice a day for 10 days. We have been giving him drops for 5 days now and my cat hasn't gotten any better, in fact my cat has gotten worse! I called today to follow up and find out if my cat can be seen again today or if there was anything I could do to help him. The receptionist was very rude and told me they didn't even know my cat had an ear infection, even though they diagnosed it earlier in the week! After explaining the symptoms to the receptionist, she very rudely told me that there was nothing they could do and to call again on Monday morning. I knew my cat was sick, so I needed up bring him to the emergency vet in my town. By the time I got to the emergency vet, my cat was very ill and dying. My cat's blood pressure and heart rate had begun dropping and my cat ended up dying a few hours later. The vet at the emergency vet told me that my cat had cancer and was very shocked that Highway Animal hospital did not pick up on that in their blood work. I just want to say that I will not be coming back here ever again, nor will I recommend them to anyone! VERY disappointed! Read Less

We used HAH since the 1980's, the employees knew our dog by name and were helpful. I would like to mention that we lived in Norwalk and yes we drove up to Fairfiled for our cocker spaniel to be groomed and seen when ill. They were always attentive and friendly. Recently I rescued a pit bull and they didn't hesitate to see him ASAP and schedule an appointment for him to get fixed. It was a matter of maybe three days total, they kept him over night and Samson couldn't be any happier. Also, when you have a pet you know that there is going to be a cost associated with their care i.e. grooming, vaccines etc. Which for the most part I do handle his grooming needs, but surgeries and vaccines are a necessary part of maintaining a happy and healthy pet. They are reasonable and I would highly recommend them.Read Less

Please let your friends know how INHUMANE HIGHWAY ANIMAL HOSPTIAL IS! Moved back to CT. late in 2010. I needed a new vet in the Fairfiled area and a friend suggested Highway Animal Hospital because they had been great with his pet. They were near me and i called up and asked all my questions including if they performed euthenasia and cremation services because my dogs were 13 and i wanted to have a vet that did that so when the time came i wasn't frantically looking for that. We went in for our initial exam the guy we had as our vet (there are 3 vets there) was nice and things went well. That was 8/31/11 and i didn't need them again until last week. 1//27/12 I called H.A.H. & scheduled to have Bandit put to rest due to the diagnosis Cornell Univ. Vet Spec. had given him and that he was in severe distress but i had medicated him but i needed to bring him in that day to put him to rest. There was no compassionate "Oh I am so sorry abou that" or anything. I medicated and loved on Bandit till then. I got there at 4p with Bandit in my arms (clearly in sever distress), my 81 year old mother, my other dog and me~sobbing. No one got up from the desk although there were 3 people there. They finally pointed me to the back which was a tiny store room with a bunch of boxes, and surgical table and an IV hooked up above it. I went to the ground with him and stayed there. Thank goodness there was a small chair wedged between some boxes for my mother. They left us there for 15 mintues maybe longer without a word. One vet tech came in and said matter of factly-sorry but the other appointment had lots of questions so it was taking longer....REALLY! Once they finally came i chose not to move Bandit again. The vet (i had never met that one before) began to talk to me about other things Bandit might have and that if that was so if i waited up to 5 days he would be ok...sorry for this mental picture but Bandit was absolutely out of it. He was drooling profusely, having seizures, and completely disoriented (he had gone from sedation to 100% distress in the span of an 30-45 minutes). I told her i would not put my dog through this hell for 1 more minute even if she told me he would be okay tomorrow. Once Bandit was gone i asked the vet tech through my sobs what happesn now as this was the first time i have ever had to experience this. She bends down and says..."well he will be put in the freezer in the back and the crematory place will pick him up this coming Thursday." I LOST IT at that point. I don't need or want to know those details it just tore through me like a knife and i told her i would not leave him there in the freezer for a week! She went out and came back in and said they would pick him up Monday. So now i have this a picture of Bandit in a freezer for the weekend and there is nothing i can do...The tech did redeem herself somewhat when i told her i wasn't leaving until she got a clean soft blanket and bed for Bandit. We put him in there and he looked so peaceful and cozy and then i gave him to her very gently at the door to the back and she took him very gently but this was because i told her exactly what to do. That was the only way i could have left him. I called Thursday 3x's to see if his ashes were back. From 12;20 until 4p. They told me they would call me but since i have no faith in them i kept calling. At 4p they said he hadn't come and would now not be there until Monday. I raised my voice at this point and the girls says, "um...hold on a minute." Another girl gets on the phone and says, "oops he's here and has been here for a while we just didn't know because someone else had receive him...No so sorry or how are you doing...nothingI get there, take B's ashes and i pay the bill and i tell them i need to tell you how horribly you treated me and my dog and how you need to NOT do this to the next person...the heavy set blond at the front rolled her eyes at me and smirked and began to argue. The other lady (red hair and tattoos) came in and was respectful and did not argue and listened to me and apologized for my being told Bandit would be in a freezer but thought they were giving me privacy by putting me in the store room. I told her how about giving Bandit and I respect and dignity and moving the other people out of that room because we had scheduled appointment and this was the final place Bandit was going to be at, "Would you want your last moments with your beloved pet in a store room or in the nice examination room?" . She was silent then. The other one continued to argue with me, be defensive, and roll her eyes. I told them it would have spoken volumes to the other appt. that you cared enough about a very sick dog and needed that room (providing the other pet was not sick but as i understand it that pet was not). SO PLEASE CHOOSE ANOTHER VET!! Read Less

Our family has been bringing our terrier here for 10+ years for veterinary care and boarding.  We have experienced excellent care and great service from the staff.  Recently we brought our dog here for some tests and for treatment of a growth on her shoulder that has made it difficult for her to walk.  The staff made it very convenient for me because I was able to drop my pet off in the morning and they called me when she was ready.  The vet even called me personally to discuss her test results and treatment.  Whenever we have brought our pet here for boarding, she appears happy and frisky when we pick her up.  I feel confident that she is treated very well when in their care.I can understand others' concerns regarding the expense involved.  However, I agree with the other reviewer- what do you expect for services that are not covered by insurance?  Caring for a pet is expensive.  I have inquired about the cost of services at other veterinary hospitals and I did not find that Highway Animal was more expensive than any other local facility.  And they are happy to give you pricing up front if you ask.  My pet is a member of our family and I am happy to pay for top-notch care when she needs it. This was the first place we took our dog to when we moved to CT and after trying several other places we'll never go anywhere else. Sure, the decor is nothing impressive, or even attractive, but it doesn't translate to poor care. The staff generally cares about the animals and you can tell. As far as prices go, they're a little steep (no more so than any other animal hospital), but what do you expect from non-insurance-covered medical services? Not only do we bring our own dog here, but all the other dogs we foster. In addition to regular vet visits, we have also boarded here. They offer bathing, teeth cleaning and nail clipping services for boarders as well. Read Less

Read Less
