This is going to be a long one so get comfy....I decided to take my dog to Star Meadow after taking him to the VCA for several years. The only reason I wanted to switch vets was because I really think my dog has some anxiety and needs to be medicated to a degree. The VCA vet didn't believe in medicating for that reason, so I moved on to Star Meadow. BIGGEST MISTAKE.For starters my dog, Jack is very anxious, excited, hyper at the vet. He does growl a bit once the examination begins and since he began showing mild aggression I asked he be muzzled at the vet. The VCA muzzled him, would examine him in the room and the visit would go smoothly. At Star Meadow this was not the case...The first time we were there Dr. Malament offered to take him to to another room in hopes it would calm him down. I agreed and thought it was a good idea. She returned shortly to tell me he did well. Let me pause here to say I truly enjoyed Dr. Malament and most of the front staff, but as time progressed my experience specifically with the practice manager?/ want-to-Be behaviorist Crystal made my decision to leave.Anyway, after learning Jack had Lyme disease, we had to return. It was then that we were ambushed by Crystal who came in to talk to us about training and behavior at length. Crystal is not a trainer nor is she a licensed behaviorist. We have a trainer we love, but full disclosure Jack is a tough, stubborn dog and it's a slow moving process. Crystal basically lectured us on how awful of a dog he was. Not true. I would invite anyone who reads this review to come to my house and tell me he's awful. She was rude, condescending and her opinion was not requested. He also had an accident where he cut his thigh on a piece of metal in the yard. We had to return. At this point he was on two medications of which I personally had to guess with the dosages because what was initially prescribed left a hyper, happy dog shaking in the bathroom In the dark. His cut thigh required stitches which he was fully sedated for. After the stitches were removed we had to speak as a follow up. This is where Crystal enters yet again. In short, Crystal said Jack would have to be FULLY SEDATED for regular visits if we wanted to continue to be a patient there. For the safety of the staff and Jack she said this was the necessary. No incident had ever happened with Jack and their staff and I was forthcoming when they took us on about him being muzzled during exams. She was again rude, harsh and quite honestly not someone I hope to ever have to deal with again. Let me also note he was never sedated AT ALL let alone fully when we were at the VCA.I hung up, in tears, and after calming down called back to request a conversation with Dr. Malament as we had just dropped $1,000 on stitches and I felt I was atleast due a phone call with the vet, not the want-to-be behaviorist.Dr. Malament sang a completely different tune. She said they would be willing to try other routes besides full sedation such as conducting his visits outdoors. I thanked her and hung up. We never went back. The bottom line is this...I think Star Meadow is an uppity practice that truly can pick and choose which dogs they want to see. If you have a large dog that isn't the perfect angel at the vet. Don't bring them to Star Meadow. If you do, avoid Crystal at all costs. Read Less

I originally started going here because I lived down the street in Farmington when I first got my cat. After I moved to Naugatuck and then to Wolcott I tried going to vets closer by but was never as happy as when I went to Star Meadow. After a 3 year hiatus, I took my cats back to Star Meadow and once again was treated with the best care possible. The vet techs were gentle even though my cat hissed and tried to bite them when they cut her nails. They complimented and pet the cats and gave them treats to calm them down. Wonderful vet techs. Then when the vet came in to do the exam, she walked me through every step. She addressed every concern and answered every question thoroughly. I never felt like she was rushed to go to another room. She also suggested I could skip some tests and put the money towards a treatment she thought was necessary instead of trying to get me to spend all the money on all the things. She took the time to show me how to administer ear cleaning solution instead of handing me a bottle and sending me home. I love this vet clinic and highly recommend them to anybody. Read Less

Excellent place to bring your beloved pets. The staff is kind, compassionate, and sincere. Prior to going there, my faith in the veterinary profession had been shook by a place that was clearly driven by only the almighty dollar and not what's in the animal's best interest. Star meadow (and fox clinic in Newington also) restored that faith. They are exactly what an animal clinic should be: people who choose to work with animals because they love them and empathize with the bond pet owners have with their furry children. Dr de Wolf went the extra mile to make sure my little guy got better when the outlook seemed bleak, and the entire staff shares that dedication. Read Less

This review is a long time overdue!  My wife and I have been bringing our 3 elderly rescue dogs to Star Meadow Animal Clinic for over 10 years.  Our main doctor is Dr. Tanya Battiston, who by far is the best we have ever come across. What is even better than that is the fact that if we have ever needed to come in and Dr. Battiston was not there, we have always had the best care from each of the Dr's and Techs working at Star Meadow.  I can't recommend this practice enough. They truly put the care of the animals ahead of everything else.  Let me explain:There was an incident where we had an emergency with our Chihuahua at 6:00 pm. We called Star Meadow and Dr. Battiston was getting ready to leave.  After taking our call, walking us through a few things to check and assessing the situation, Dr. Battiston did not recommend for us to take our dog to the Emergency Vet.  Instead, realizing the severity of the situation, she told us to come in immediately so that she could see our dog.  We got there and within minutes she had diagnosed our dog with blockage in the bladder.  After tests to confirm she managed to dislodge the blockage and empty the bladder.  The very next day she performed successful surgery!  She saved his life! This is the type of care and attention she and the rest of the Doctors and Staff at Star Meadow have always shown all three of our dogs.  I have read some of the other reviews where people complain about the wait time, etc... To me that seems a bit ridiculous.  I look at it as a positive.  This practice is busy at times because they are that good!  I would rather wait a few extra minutes (which rarely happens) because I know the Doctors are making sure the animals are being well cared for than enter a factory that pushes the animals in and out to simply make money!  This is TOP NOTCH PRACTICE! I took my dog to Star Meadow for 12 years. They always provided excellent care! They even did his examinations and minor procedures like nail trimming in the parking lot because he would get so stressed out in the office. On occasion they did want to do a few more tests than I was comfortable with but when I made it clear that I wasn't going to go to extreme lengths they were always polite about it. My guess is that if they didn't offer every option some people would be very upset. When it came time for me to let him go, they handled us with care, kindness and concern. Read Less

I have been bringing my dog here for a number of years now.  Up until now, my dog thankfully was only in need of his yearly check-ups.  I never had too many complaints at this point, other than being disappointed at the fact that I always felt like I was being pressured to add more services onto an already thorough exam.  The real issue with this vet began when I brought my dog in for a thorough exam, seeing that he was starting to vomit every day and was not eating as much as usual.  I understand that troubleshooting is needed at first in hopes to rule out a list of possible reasons for an illness.  Well, to make the long story short, I brought my dog in numerous times, sometimes two to three times a WEEK because the medications they were prescribing for my dog were not curing his illness, but only masking the symptoms for a short time.  We all know vet bills can be extremely costly, but those of us who would do anything to help our pets would spend whatever we needed to, to make them better.  That is exactly what we did...however, our doctor was unable to properly diagnose his illness and he was getting WORSE.  At this time, my husband and I were thinking that we needed a second opinion because the doctors here seemed to be incompetent.  They didn't know what to tell us anymore and it seemed that they were grabbing at straws at this point.  Well, what happened next, made up our minds...I was on the phone one day with the clinic manager, Crystal, and I was frustrated.  I was explaining to her how stressed and frustrated we were because our dog was not getting better with their care, but only getting worse.  She actually had the nerve to insinuate that we were not properly giving our dog the care he needed!!!  I was beside myself as I couldn't believe what I was hearing.  At this point, after many months of coming to Star Meadow...and after already having spent thousands of dollars on care for our dog, how on earth could she even think something like that???I told Crystal how rude and uncalled for her insinuation was and that I was extremely insulted.  Well, apparently, she didn't like the fact that I called her out on her rudeness, because SHE THEN HUNG UP ON ME.  This woman, who is supposed to be a professional, hung up on me, one who has brought my dog to her clinic now for years and was clearly frustrated at the lack of care he had been receiving!!!Needless to say, I never went back there again, and instead, took my dog to another vet where he received the LIFE-SAVING care and surgery he needed and now he is back to himself!!!  We can't thank the doctors enough who saved his life!Do NOT go to this vet...it seems to me that these doctors care more about their fancy paintings hanging on the walls of their clinic, rather than providing professional care for their furry clients. I must mention owning a bulldog is a very high maintenance  breed and the owner can be as well.  They are always kind and polite  to me.My first Bulldog, Bergdorf did not like going to see the vet prior  to going to Star Meadow.  Bergdorf loved to go see Dr. Battiston.  I am so happy I made that change many years ago.  I don't have Bergdorf any longer.  He lived a very long life with the wonderful care from Dr. Battiston.  I currently take Brandan and Promise to see her and could not be happier with the care that we receive from Star Meadow Animal Clinic.  I have to say this is the best veterinary practice in Connecticut. We've been taking our black lab here for the past 2 years. The vets, technicians, and office staff are always super friendly and accommodating but there are a few areas that concern me... We get random cards in the mail throughout the year saying our dog needs such and such exam or vaccine when we take her for her annual checkup at a specific time each year and she gets all the exams/vaccines on that one day. Somewhere their records getting mixed up. We've also used them for boarding. They are reasonably priced and accommodating on pickup and drop off times. HOWEVER, this last time, she was boarded for a week and came home with kennel cough. Now, we noticed it RIGHT away so there is no way that anyone caring for her would not have noticed it while she was there--it's not as if the symptoms didn't show up for a few days. When my husband called and asked them to see her FREE OF CHARGE they would not do it...saying they would charge at least $52 for an exam. We not only had her vaccinated for canine bordatella, but she obviously contracted the disease after being housed in their kennel for a week. I feel the staff should have contacted the clients and notified them that some other dog had kennel cough and our dog may have been exposed to it (at the very least) and then when she DID contract it, they should see her free of charge. I find this very unprofessional and we will be shopping for a new vet and kennel. I understand that the vaccine is not fool proof but you should not be looking to make money off people when their dogs get sick at your facility. Also, they fed her TWICE the amount of food per day we specified on the instructions and I was not happy about that. She is a middle-aged black lab and needs to watch her weight. Read Less

I'll be brief and to the point, I would say this is one of the most overpriced Vet clinic's in all of New England. After being shocked at our first bill and the outrageous charges for offices visits and services. Not only the prices are terrible, but so were the medical staff, the doctor we were paired with was shutoff and cold to patients. Additionally we had strong indications that the doctor had passed immediate judgements based on breed and showed a sever lack of ability and knowledge when compared to other clinics in the area. Small waiting room, with nowhere to really take the animals. Simply put, I wont return here, nor will my pets. Additionally I would urge you to consider your other options as just about anywhere else would be far superior to this facility. The best thing from our experience would have to be the rest of the staff. Unlike the doctor we met, everyone else in the clinic and behind the counters were extremely friendly and helpful. So in the end at least there is that, and the only reason it could be considered "fair" service. Most sincerely B.Bailey Read Less
