Established in 1983 by Dr. Gerry Fischbach, Pet Shield Veterinary Hospital has undergone changes and improvements throughout the years in keeping with the many ongoing advancements in veterinary medicine. We focus on providing the highest quality medicine, surgery, and dentistry for your companion animals.
Here at Pet Shield Veterinary Hospital, we understand that our patients are not just your pets, they are your family. We want your family to receive nothing but the finest care available. That is why we take a personalized, hands-on approach to veterinary care and seek to continually improve our practice and provide accessible care. Most recently we’ve added digital radiology and offer many other services in order to meet the needs of every patient that walks through our doors.
Practicing under the philosophy of personalized, compassionate care, the staff members at Pet Shield work with clients and patients to ensure the highest quality preventive care, internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, and emergency care for sick or injured animals. We also have access to board-certified surgeons, radiologists, dermatologists, and cardiologists.
Conveniently located in the former Giant Oak Pharmacy next to the Branford Compassion Club, Pet Shield Veterinary Hospital is open six days a week with late hours Tuesday through Thursday to accommodate our clients’ needs. We will also take in a limited amount of emergency patients, and if the particular situation should require care not available at our facility, we can immediately direct you to the proper care. Very helpful and show their love for animals, not about money like most veterinarians. Pricing on exams and products are very fair and reasonable. We began coming to PetShield last year, for routine check ups for our puppies. It wasn't until December that we began noticing something wasn't quite right with one of our dogs. The staff at PetShield was very helpful and quickly diagnosed him with allergies. As anyone with a pet with allergies knows, they are not very easy to treat but the staff at PetShield went above and beyond to help make my boy feel relief. They are always helpful, even when a worried mom such as myself makes several phone calls a week with questions! Other veterinarians that we had gone to prior to PetShield, would automatically insist the pup would need to come in for an expensive exam, and would provide no help or information over the phone.PetShield cares and for that I am forever thankful.

It is impossible for me to speak too highly of the staff at Pet Shield Veterinary Hospital. We have been going there for years, both with Dr. Fischbach and with Dr. Shanley, and have never been treated with anything less than generous and attentive care. During our cat's last illness they were always there to provide updates, make suggestions, and help us make her as comfortable as possible. The passing of a pet is never easy, but without the compassionate staff at Pet Shield it would have been twice as hard. We have adopted two new cats from the shelter next door, and would trust no one else with their health. And if anyone from Pet Shield reads this: thank you for all you do!

Where do I start! I LOVE this veterinary hospital. Over the course of 12 years, they have treated both my dogs with love and consideration and gave them the same treatment they'd do for their own dogs. They helped me through a torn ACL, severe athritis, multiple carpet eating experiences and countless other things and were ALWAYS available when I needed them. I can't express my gratitude enough! I made the hour and a half drive to see them repeatedly for this reason. I unfortunately had to start bringing my dogs elsewhere because I live so far away and they are getting old.. but bring your "kids" here, you won't regret it.

Dr. Shanley is extremely unprofessional, and clearly cares makes more about making money than the welfare of animals. My parents take their pet to Dr. Shanley, and provide for their pet's every need, but are retired and can not afford services if they are not necessary. They volunteer at the local shelter on a weekly basis and are true animal lovers. When they went to foster a dog who was saved from Houston, and too nervous to stay at the shelter - the shelter call Dr. Shanley who called my parents "cheap". Luckily the shelter knew better, but shame on Dr. Shanley.

I have been to Pet Shield 3 time in 3 days with 3 different cats. I cant say enough about the staff. They are knowledgeable and very kind to my cats. I have seen both Dr Read and Dr Shanley. Not only are the both gentle and compassionate, but they we fantastic at getting to the base of each of my cats problems. Seems that bad things come in 3's so i am hoping I don't have to go back for a while. If I do have any more problems I will only seek Dr Read or Dr Shanleys advice.

We've brought our dog(s) here since we moved to North Branford in 2007. The care has always been great. Dr. Fischbach clearly adores animals and is a passionate advocate. One Christmas Eve, several years ago, I ran out to the store to buy some last minute things. When I got home, I immediately realized that the dog had yanked the tablecloth down and ate about 12 dozen homemade cookies (none contained chocolate, so control your indignation) out of metal tins, which he pried open with his big dumb-guy mouth. The hours afterwards were tense and fart filled. Christmas morning rolled around and our dog was a cookie stuffed groaning log. I called Pet Shield and left a message explaining what had happened, not expecting to hear anything back. Dr. Fischbach called WITHIN MINUTES because he is amazing. So, it turns out that he (sadly) retired, and several of the other vets from the practice left which I kind of which I'd known because the two new vets are...nice, but...maybe deadpan is the word? I don't need to be bffs with a vet, but personable wouldn't be remiss. This all being said, there's no doubt they're capable and that they care and I'd never hesitate to recommend this practice if you're in need of care for your pet.And lastly, because I'm sure you were curious--the Great Cookie Thief of Christmas Eve ended up being just fine, and when Dr. Fischbach called, he laughed and said "ohh, he'll be ok, but I'm sure he feels crappy and will for a while!"

My Bernese Mountian Dog is petrified of vets. I heard good things about Pet Shield so we gave it a try. Dr Reed and Amanda were kind, professional and absolutely patient beyond all expectation. They continually worked to treat my dog where she was comfortable and didn't give up until they had what they needed in a way that my dog was okay with. Wonderful experience and I am so glad we switched!

We brought our pups here after the terrible treatments both they and we were given at Guilford Veterinary. We reached out to friends that teach at Cornell Veterinary School and they know Dr. Fischbach and said his team truly cares about the animals and would treat both us and our pups well. They were not mistaken! This group is dynamite! The care our pups receive, the patience they show them, the respect they show us and the finally, the bill? Well, lets just say, this group is the only Vet team we will ever go to from now on! They are tops! Cornell University was 100% right!!!!!

Excellent vetrinarians. They are very nice and always find time to see your pet. They are very compassionate here. I switched to them after several very bad experiences with other local vets and animal hospitals and since then i have been here many times with my dogs and i have never been dissapointed in the service they provide. Prices are high at all vets but the prices here are on the lower side of them.

Updating my review....Our family cannot express the depth of gratitude we have for the staff at Petshield. We had to say goodbye to our beloved little Kobi after 15 years. The past few months were concerning because his comfort was our focus. Sadly, more cancer appeared in his mouth. There wasn't much to do, but we did everything we could, with Dr. Shanley leading the way. Her concern for Kobi was always at the forefront of his treatment, and somehow she also took care of Kobi's people. We will always recommend Petshield, to us there is no other option if you want the best care for your pet, and your family.My original review:Started using Petshield over 13 years ago. Could not be happier with the care our Kobi has received from the staff and doctors! Staff is friendly and knowledgable, most were there when we started with them. Doctors are caring and compassionate, and recommend very reputable specialists if they have to. Kobi has never left Petshield without our knowing a treatment plan, and that's saying something because our little guy has had digestive, dental, disc and cancer issues. Cost has always seemed to match level of care. Kobi has had some health challenges, but he is happy and active, and we believe that because we have Petshield in his corner!!

When I show up there I just feel like my two cats are the only thing that matters, they get full attention from the moment I step in the door. Any and all questions I have get answeredwhile there and even over the phone and I am never made to feel stupid for not knowing something. I would never bring them anywhere else!

My dog Sachem has been going to Pet Shield for 9 years or so. The staff is wonderful and Dr Perry is the best I have ever found in my 50+ years of owning dogs! I wish I could find a doctor for myself as knowledgeable and caring. Sachem was so sick yesterday we thought we were going to have to put him down. He couldn't hold his head up and wasn't eating. He's 12+ years old. Dr Perry examined him and correctly diagnosed an infection. Antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory and he's his old self again, the very next day! The doc or the staff always follow through to see how everyone is doing. I can't say enough good things about the group at Petshield..... I totally trust them all with the animals I love.

Amazing way with animals!? - ? - 2010-04-20 I had a rescue dog with fear aggression who refused to be touch for examination by any other vet and always required muzzling. Going to the Vet was a traumatic experience b/c of all the restraining that happened in order to examine her. She was a small dog of 18lbs but very strong and ferocious. Dr. F, saw that she was afraid and aggressive, Dr. Fischbach said to the dog, ""ok, I wont touch you if you don't want me to."" The next time my dog and Dr.Fischbach saw eachother, my dog was still fearful, but did not need to be muzzled, was not viscous or aggressive. Her tail was between her legs, but she cooperated with the full exam! I contribute her changed behavior to the respect given her by Dr. F. He truly is a medicine man and understands both the both the concrete and subtle needs of dogs. The staff is always friendly and helpful and they are less expensive than any Vet in New Haven where I live. Its worth the 20 minute drive from New Haven to North Branford for this level of animal care. Pet Shield participates in programs to help strays get spayed/neutered also... the good Karma just keeps coming! Keep up the good work Pet Shield!

Disturbing to visit a practice where the vet presses you to pursue surgery with a private specialty practice and discourages using an educational institution. We decided to follow our own research and instincts. Turns out Tufts was 1/2 the price, care was superb, and outcome excellent. For another dog, she insisted a rash was mange. Med$$ prescribed...itching continued and eventually subsided. Exactly 12 months later dog again had exact same symptoms but--no longer using same vet--seasonal allergies diagnosed and treated and dog finally has relief.

I have been a client of Pet Shield and Dr. Gerald Fischbach for many years now. He has performed surgery on my dog, as well as treated my ferrets over the years. He treats a variety of animals and doesn't lmit his practice to only cats and dogs as some vets do. He is both knowledgeable and honest, and I trust my pets will get the best treatment in his care. He is not afraid to suggest euthanasia if he feels as though it will minimize the suffering of your pet, but if he feels there is hope of treatment or cure he will counsel you on the pros and cons of doing so, monetary included. He helps you make the right decision for you and your pet. His staff is friendly and helpful, and although I recently moved out of North Branford, I still make the 45 minute trek to North Branford to continue my pet's quality treatment.

The staff and vets are all really nice, but I guess it's more important to milk people out of money by suggesting useless medical procedures for very obviously dying pets. I might be a little bitter, but if a vet can't come out and tell you that your dog needs to be put down, s/he's not really a vet I want. When we get a new dog, after I finally stop crying, it will never set food in this office, even though it's right down the street.

I just wanted to update my 2006 review of Pet Shield Veterinary Hospital. I must say as other places get worse they just keep getting better and better. You can take you pet there and know that it will get the best care. Their charges are fair and doesn't break the bank. One Veterinarian that i especially like is Dr Gerald Fischbach. He not only is a Fantastic Vet truly cares about the animals. Like i mentioned before I live just a few minutes from a Veterinary hospital but I drive and will continue to drive the 45 minutes to get to them. They have a great staff it's clean and most of all informative. You can asked them about anything and they will give you a honest answer. If you are looking for a good Veterinary hospital give them a call. I know you'll be as pleased as i am.

Very helpful and show their love for animals, not about money like most veterinarians. Pricing on exams and products are very fair and reasonable. We began coming to PetShield last year, for routine check ups for our puppies. It wasn't until December that we began noticing something wasn't quite right with one of our dogs. The staff at PetShield was very helpful and quickly diagnosed him with allergies. As anyone with a pet with allergies knows, they are not very easy to treat but the staff at PetShield went above and beyond to help make my boy feel relief. They are always helpful, even when a worried mom such as myself makes several phone calls a week with questions! Other veterinarians that we had gone to prior to PetShield, would automatically insist the pup would need to come in for an expensive exam, and would provide no help or information over the phone.PetShield cares and for that I am forever thankful.

It is impossible for me to speak too highly of the staff at Pet Shield Veterinary Hospital. We have been going there for years, both with Dr. Fischbach and with Dr. Shanley, and have never been treated with anything less than generous and attentive care. During our cat's last illness they were always there to provide updates, make suggestions, and help us make her as comfortable as possible. The passing of a pet is never easy, but without the compassionate staff at Pet Shield it would have been twice as hard. We have adopted two new cats from the shelter next door, and would trust no one else with their health. And if anyone from Pet Shield reads this: thank you for all you do!

I have been going to Pet Shield for over 10 years. Dr. K Shanely is the best. Our pets are family and this entire staff understands that. They are knowledgeable and compassionate and have been right there for me every step of the way. I would highly recommend this veterinary hospital.

Where do I start! I LOVE this veterinary hospital. Over the course of 12 years, they have treated both my dogs with love and consideration and gave them the same treatment they'd do for their own dogs. They helped me through a torn ACL, severe athritis, multiple carpet eating experiences and countless other things and were ALWAYS available when I needed them. I can't express my gratitude enough! I made the hour and a half drive to see them repeatedly for this reason. I unfortunately had to start bringing my dogs elsewhere because I live so far away and they are getting old.. but bring your "kids" here, you won't regret it.

Dr. Shanley is extremely unprofessional, and clearly cares makes more about making money than the welfare of animals. My parents take their pet to Dr. Shanley, and provide for their pet's every need, but are retired and can not afford services if they are not necessary. They volunteer at the local shelter on a weekly basis and are true animal lovers. When they went to foster a dog who was saved from Houston, and too nervous to stay at the shelter - the shelter call Dr. Shanley who called my parents "cheap". Luckily the shelter knew better, but shame on Dr. Shanley.

This is the best place I have ever taken my cats. They are a very caring veterinary hospital and have seen nothing but compassion from them despite one of my cats being very tough to manage at a vet. I drive 25 minutes to just go to them. I refuse to switch.

I have been to Pet Shield 3 time in 3 days with 3 different cats. I cant say enough about the staff. They are knowledgeable and very kind to my cats. I have seen both Dr Read and Dr Shanley. Not only are the both gentle and compassionate, but they we fantastic at getting to the base of each of my cats problems. Seems that bad things come in 3's so i am hoping I don't have to go back for a while. If I do have any more problems I will only seek Dr Read or Dr Shanleys advice.

We've brought our dog(s) here since we moved to North Branford in 2007. The care has always been great. Dr. Fischbach clearly adores animals and is a passionate advocate. One Christmas Eve, several years ago, I ran out to the store to buy some last minute things. When I got home, I immediately realized that the dog had yanked the tablecloth down and ate about 12 dozen homemade cookies (none contained chocolate, so control your indignation) out of metal tins, which he pried open with his big dumb-guy mouth. The hours afterwards were tense and fart filled. Christmas morning rolled around and our dog was a cookie stuffed groaning log. I called Pet Shield and left a message explaining what had happened, not expecting to hear anything back. Dr. Fischbach called WITHIN MINUTES because he is amazing. So, it turns out that he (sadly) retired, and several of the other vets from the practice left which I kind of which I'd known because the two new vets are...nice, but...maybe deadpan is the word? I don't need to be bffs with a vet, but personable wouldn't be remiss. This all being said, there's no doubt they're capable and that they care and I'd never hesitate to recommend this practice if you're in need of care for your pet.And lastly, because I'm sure you were curious--the Great Cookie Thief of Christmas Eve ended up being just fine, and when Dr. Fischbach called, he laughed and said "ohh, he'll be ok, but I'm sure he feels crappy and will for a while!"

Today was our first visit with our first of 3 dogs and it was a great place! Everyone was great, helpful, friendly, great with my Jax and the prices are reasonable. I'm pleased!

My Bernese Mountian Dog is petrified of vets. I heard good things about Pet Shield so we gave it a try. Dr Reed and Amanda were kind, professional and absolutely patient beyond all expectation. They continually worked to treat my dog where she was comfortable and didn't give up until they had what they needed in a way that my dog was okay with. Wonderful experience and I am so glad we switched!

We brought our pups here after the terrible treatments both they and we were given at Guilford Veterinary. We reached out to friends that teach at Cornell Veterinary School and they know Dr. Fischbach and said his team truly cares about the animals and would treat both us and our pups well. They were not mistaken! This group is dynamite! The care our pups receive, the patience they show them, the respect they show us and the finally, the bill? Well, lets just say, this group is the only Vet team we will ever go to from now on! They are tops! Cornell University was 100% right!!!!!

Excellent vetrinarians. They are very nice and always find time to see your pet. They are very compassionate here. I switched to them after several very bad experiences with other local vets and animal hospitals and since then i have been here many times with my dogs and i have never been dissapointed in the service they provide. Prices are high at all vets but the prices here are on the lower side of them.

Updating my review....Our family cannot express the depth of gratitude we have for the staff at Petshield. We had to say goodbye to our beloved little Kobi after 15 years. The past few months were concerning because his comfort was our focus. Sadly, more cancer appeared in his mouth. There wasn't much to do, but we did everything we could, with Dr. Shanley leading the way. Her concern for Kobi was always at the forefront of his treatment, and somehow she also took care of Kobi's people. We will always recommend Petshield, to us there is no other option if you want the best care for your pet, and your family.My original review:Started using Petshield over 13 years ago. Could not be happier with the care our Kobi has received from the staff and doctors! Staff is friendly and knowledgable, most were there when we started with them. Doctors are caring and compassionate, and recommend very reputable specialists if they have to. Kobi has never left Petshield without our knowing a treatment plan, and that's saying something because our little guy has had digestive, dental, disc and cancer issues. Cost has always seemed to match level of care. Kobi has had some health challenges, but he is happy and active, and we believe that because we have Petshield in his corner!!

Dr. Fischbach has been caring for my pets for 20 years, since he was in New Haven...to me, there is not a more caring and trustworthy staff anywhere; they clearly love all of their furry patients!

I adopted two cats almost a year ago now. I have been to Pet Shield for regular shots and for when my kitties have been sick and not yet have I been disapointed. When I show up there I just feel like my two cats are the only thing that matters, they get full attention from the moment I step in the door. Any and all questions I have get answeredwhile there and even over the phone and I am never made to feel stupid for not knowing something. I would never bring them anywhere else!

My dog Sachem has been going to Pet Shield for 9 years or so. The staff is wonderful and Dr Perry is the best I have ever found in my 50+ years of owning dogs! I wish I could find a doctor for myself as knowledgeable and caring. Sachem was so sick yesterday we thought we were going to have to put him down. He couldn't hold his head up and wasn't eating. He's 12+ years old. Dr Perry examined him and correctly diagnosed an infection. Antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory and he's his old self again, the very next day! The doc or the staff always follow through to see how everyone is doing. I can't say enough good things about the group at Petshield..... I totally trust them all with the animals I love.

Amazing way with animals!? - ? - 2010-04-20 I had a rescue dog with fear aggression who refused to be touch for examination by any other vet and always required muzzling. Going to the Vet was a traumatic experience b/c of all the restraining that happened in order to examine her. She was a small dog of 18lbs but very strong and ferocious. Dr. F, saw that she was afraid and aggressive, Dr. Fischbach said to the dog, ""ok, I wont touch you if you don't want me to."" The next time my dog and Dr.Fischbach saw eachother, my dog was still fearful, but did not need to be muzzled, was not viscous or aggressive. Her tail was between her legs, but she cooperated with the full exam! I contribute her changed behavior to the respect given her by Dr. F. He truly is a medicine man and understands both the both the concrete and subtle needs of dogs. The staff is always friendly and helpful and they are less expensive than any Vet in New Haven where I live. Its worth the 20 minute drive from New Haven to North Branford for this level of animal care. Pet Shield participates in programs to help strays get spayed/neutered also... the good Karma just keeps coming! Keep up the good work Pet Shield!

Disturbing to visit a practice where the vet presses you to pursue surgery with a private specialty practice and discourages using an educational institution. We decided to follow our own research and instincts. Turns out Tufts was 1/2 the price, care was superb, and outcome excellent. For another dog, she insisted a rash was mange. Med$$ prescribed...itching continued and eventually subsided. Exactly 12 months later dog again had exact same symptoms but--no longer using same vet--seasonal allergies diagnosed and treated and dog finally has relief.

I have been a client of Pet Shield and Dr. Gerald Fischbach for many years now. He has performed surgery on my dog, as well as treated my ferrets over the years. He treats a variety of animals and doesn't lmit his practice to only cats and dogs as some vets do. He is both knowledgeable and honest, and I trust my pets will get the best treatment in his care. He is not afraid to suggest euthanasia if he feels as though it will minimize the suffering of your pet, but if he feels there is hope of treatment or cure he will counsel you on the pros and cons of doing so, monetary included. He helps you make the right decision for you and your pet. His staff is friendly and helpful, and although I recently moved out of North Branford, I still make the 45 minute trek to North Branford to continue my pet's quality treatment.

The staff and vets are all really nice, but I guess it's more important to milk people out of money by suggesting useless medical procedures for very obviously dying pets. I might be a little bitter, but if a vet can't come out and tell you that your dog needs to be put down, s/he's not really a vet I want. When we get a new dog, after I finally stop crying, it will never set food in this office, even though it's right down the street.

I just wanted to update my 2006 review of Pet Shield Veterinary Hospital. I must say as other places get worse they just keep getting better and better. You can take you pet there and know that it will get the best care. Their charges are fair and doesn't break the bank. One Veterinarian that i especially like is Dr Gerald Fischbach. He not only is a Fantastic Vet truly cares about the animals. Like i mentioned before I live just a few minutes from a Veterinary hospital but I drive and will continue to drive the 45 minutes to get to them. They have a great staff it's clean and most of all informative. You can asked them about anything and they will give you a honest answer. If you are looking for a good Veterinary hospital give them a call. I know you'll be as pleased as i am.
