This place is a nightmare! It is covered in weeds and moss, the inside smells like a wet dog but worse. The doctor is well over 70 and not at all personable. Twice I brought my puppy there and received treatments without the doctor actually touching my dog, needless to say they didn't work. After going to a specialist, my dog had a very easily detectable and treatable skin issue and Mattatuck Animal Hospital kept taking my money and prescribing garbage without a proper diagnosis. This place is a death sentence for sick animals. It's dirt cheap for a reason!!! Read Less

I've been going there for over 30 years. Never once felt like I was being taken advantage of during my times of extreme stress. My animals have always been taken care of like I would want any of my family members to be cared for. Great staff and compassionate and knowledgeable doctors. Oh, and their prices are not ridiculous. I HAVE BEING A CLIENT FOR 14 YEARS- THE ONLY REASON I STICK WITH THE PLACE IS DR. TURGEON KIND, PROFESSIONAL AND EDUCATED. The other doctors don’t waste your time or money with them- The old lady in front desk “Moron” is full of Nastiness for no reason. She is rude to everyone by phone and in person. She does not want to work? Then why she is there? She is VERY VERY RUDE UNEDUCATED. She was very rude by phone with someone else in front of everyone just because she wasn’t able to use properly the ATM MACHINE. She get really nasty if you ask for a detailed receipt. She get upset because I asked for the pills I paid and she forgot to give them to me. She was acting so bipolar and aggressive when someone was giving her an address to mail the receipt just paid by credit card. My bill was 100$- 55$ for exam, 40$ Felv-FIV test and 5$ for Pills. She charged me 144$ I knew something was wrong and she was soooo upset when I asked her to tell me why 144$ finding out that She charged me for my friend Cat Medication. My friend was suppose to be charge 192$ and My bill was only 100$ and She charged 148$ to my friend and 144$ to me. When I told her that was wrong and I was also worry about The Cats records showing that I bought insulin for the wrong Cat. She responded that’s your problem with your friend, EXCUSE ME. You charged the wrong amount to each card and made wrongful information receipts per Cat, That’s the hospital responsibility and her work. Well I walked away paying an extra 44$ for her fun. I have been taking my dogs and cats here since 1978.  The docs are always kind and caring.  They have always been honest but sympathetic even when they have unpleasant news to share.  The office staff are real people who are also very nice and respectful.  As others shared, the look of the building is a bit dated but that does not impact care for my four legged loved ones so that does not matter one bit to me. I have used Mattatuck Animal Hospital for years.  It's not fancy.  The office is a little shabby and dated but that is not what matters.  Recently our 10 year old dog fell gravely ill while we were away on a vacation. Our pet sitter brought our dog to Mattatuck. Dr. Amy called me to explain what was happening and what my options were. Her calm, compassionate, and honest words seriously got me through it.  I was far away and felt helpless. Dr. Amy kept me updated, even bringing in chicken from her home to encourage my dog to eat. I know she did everything in her power to save our dog. Sadly our pup passed away a few hours after we brought her home. I know though, had she not been so lovingly cared for at Mattatuck we would not have seen our dog again and had those precious hours to say goodbye to her. When we are ready for another dog we will most definitely return to Mattatuck and the doctors there. Read Less

My 9 mo old puppy was struggling to walk and didn't want to do anything except lay down. We brought her here and they were great with her. They listened to our concerns and tested her for Lyme and she tested positive for Lyme disease and elichriosis. We are hoping the medicine starts working asap and she gets back to her old self soon. I wish I could give a negative number review. This place has gone downhill with the cast of characters at the front desk. They always act like you're bothering them and almost always have an attitude. I've always overlooked it because obviously I'm there for a reason. Dr. Miller is an arrogant, unfeeling jackass who gave a series of shots to one of my dogs and that dog died three days later. We did the shots so we could board her the day before we went on vacation. I continued to go cringing every time I found out he was on. He then charged me for a visit he said would work but my dog got worse. He finally backed down after I wouldn't budge nor would I pay extra. The latest involved my beloved dog of sixteen years who had congestive heart failure. We had an emergency visit and he suggested to  euthanize. We took our dog home and kept him going for a little over a month until last week. The incident that broke the camel's back was last week when we knew it was time. My husband said to call to see if they were open so I did. Completely emotional I conveyed that we needed to put our beloved dog down. The  woman that answered the phone said "We don't take patients after 7:30. You'll have to bring him back tomorrow morning" What kind of crap is that to say to people during their time of sorrow? I called her a bitch and hung up. I called another vet in Cheshire and they were so empathetic. Even reminded us to drive carefully and questioned if we were ok to drive. They greeted us and took us right in. We were fully prepared to fork over the credit card to help our beloved pet live longer but he was needing to cross the rainbow bridge. Though very traumatic for my son, my husband and myself we let our boy go. They were compassionate from the phone call to the sympathy card we received from them today. Mattatuck Animal Hospital will never see any new pet I get. After 30 years of bringing my pets, my mom's pets and any animal I saw in the street that needed help (I'm a rescuer) I've finally seen how a vet or their group is supposed to act. Read Less

Brought my dog in because she had a cluster of small red bumps that were concerning. The vet barely looked at her, said he didn't know the reasoning - tried to give me $60 tick and flea chewables to treat. Was charged $45 for the 6 minute visit. Waste of my time and money. I will never bring an animal here again. Brought my pup to a new vet because one of the bumps broke open and started to bleed this morning. They informed me of what the issue was gave her a steroid, pills, shampoo, and wipes to treat. Read Less

A great animal vet. My cat wasn't doing to we'll and I had to bring her in. The wait wasn't long and the doctor gave me step by step instructions on what to do and how to treat my cat. The hospital also gave us an estimate of the visit over the phone, and when we got here the bill was reasonable. Good staff, and reasonably priced. You can't beat it. Read Less

Normally I would write wonderful reviews as I had a good experience in the past.  This has changed.  Today I called to schedule my dog for an Xray as per the doctors advise.  On my last visit with the vet he indicated my dog could still have stones if she continued with her issues.  He said after my last visit "Not now, but when you are financially able to, bring her in for an xray".   Yesterday my dog began the same problem and urinating blood.  I called today to schedule the xray and was told I could not as he saw her last in January.   Then they transferred me to another staff member who kept saying do I want to schedule her in the end of June and whenever I would say she is bleeding in her urine and you want me to wait til the end of the month, she said or you can schedule an appointment and they can schedule an xray then.   So then If I spend more money on the visit they will book her sooner for the xray.  Then when I asked that, she yelled at me on the phone.  I just find it hard to believe that you are an animal hospital and do not care that my dog is urinating blood or attempting to schedule her for an emergency xray.  Im going by what the vet said.  You would think if there was a limit in time he would have mention that.  I am very frustrated.  Now to book someplace else as an emergency to pay the visit and again not have the money to pay the xray and still not know what is going on with my dog.  Thank you Mattatuck Animal Hospital for a frustrating experience and not showing any care. 06/09/16 Read Less

Excellent animal hospital. I've only dealt with Dr. Turgeon, and he's really a great vet. He's very matter-of-fact and makes your options very clear to your. He's not overly optimistic, nor is he doom and gloom. He also recommends expensive procedures only as a last-ditch option (he understands limited income). I've taken my cat to him several times this past week and every time he's been nothing short of a pleasure to work with. He hasn't strong-armed / bullied me or made me feel guilty about any of my decisions. Also, the hospital, itself, is super-convenient because they accept walk-ins. Matter of fact, they ONLY accept walk-ins, which can be a good or bad thing. If you can get there while everybody else is at work, you'll be helped almost immediately. Not only that, but they have weekend hours, as well, that aren't billed as emergency. Their pricing is also very competitive. When I went, it was $10 penicillin injection, $10 anti-nausea injection, $15 stool sample analysis, $130 for full blood panel. I have made Mattatuck Animal Hospital my first choice for care of my cats. Read Less

This place saved my cat's life. He developed stones and could not urinate. I was told by three other vets to put him down if I could not afford the $7,000 of treatment that was necessary. One of the vets was appalled at the thought of putting him down because his condition was treatable with a diet change and a fountain to increase water intake. They kept him over night, unblocked him and gave him some take home meds. It's been almost a year and he's perfectly healthy and most importantly alive. Never again! I brought my cat there to have a procedure done. After the procedure, they must have left him in his carrier crate. He was drooling profusely due to nerves and the anesthesia. The bottom of his carrier was soaked and he had to stay laying in it. He was covered on the lower part of his body with lubricant. The doctor was not there to answer questions as to how it went, what they found and if there was a treatment plan. The VERY rude receptionist didn't seem to care at all other than taking my money. I really like this Veterinarian office. Dr Turgeon and the other vet's are wonderful and are cognizant of the pet owner's budget as well as concerns for their animals. The fees are very reasonable.Dr Turgeon is very knowledgeable and takes the time to explain his diagnosis and options.   I would like to see a web site with their hours posted because I have to call in every time to determine when I can come in as they do not take appointments from what I can see. I had an 8 yr old chihuahua w/diarrhea & vomiting x1 day. He was never sick a day in his life. He was given a shot for nausea/vomiting & was also given tramadol for discomfort. Turns out that's a deadly combination. I called regarding side effects because he was extremely drowsy & was panting. I was reassured that this was to be expected. An hr later he was dead. Started shaking/seizing & stopped breathing in my arms. Never once was I told that mixing the 2 meds could kill my dog. I left a message regarding the incident & still have not heard back from them yet. If you love your pet, DO NOT BRING HIM/HER THERE! Oh & BTW, I only gave it one star becaus I had too. The staff here at Mattatuck is absolutely fantastic! It is a small clinic, where your pet gets the care and attention they need. The vet techs are very knowledgeable and were also willing to explain pricing (which is very reasonable). I brought my 5 year old cat, Peri, in with a cyst on his neck. Dr. Turgeon was very gentle with Peri and explained everything very well about the surgery he would do. Peri is a very nervous, shy cat so it is stressful for him (and me!) to do this! Later, on the day of the surgery, I called to see how he was and Dr. Turgeon went carefully over how the procedure went and Peri's condition. I picked Peri up the following day and he looked great! He is now recovering well and going back in a few days to have the stitches removed. Another thing that was great, was that they were able to hold a sample of the cyst for biopsy. They will send it out, when I am ready to pay for the testing. Obviously, I want to know whether this growth is cancerous. Being able to wait a bit to work it into my budget is fantastic.
