In a nutshell, it's a vet's office, it will do what vet's offices are meant to do. However, this one made me uncomfortable, and was overpriced. The exam rooms are a bit on the small side. The vet put my cat visibly on-edge. My questions were not answered. The vet talked in circles and didn't explain to me why he was doing what he was doing - just that 'we have to see' and 'it's what's best for the cat' without any explanations beyond that. Tests were done outside of the exam room somewhere 'in the back' that I couldn't see - my cat was taken away for them. The receptionist was disorganized and a little spacey. The disconnected and impersonal staff led to a mixup with my cat's procedure, and overall made me nervous and uneasy. I felt more like a number than a person, to be frank the whole experience felt a little 'chop shop' to me. I ended up seeking a second opinion, and my new vet made me and my cat feel much more at ease and quoted the same procedure, with two additional days of hospital stay, for over $500 less than Hopmeadow. Overall, Hopmeadow is friendly and I'm sure they're good at what they do, they just weren't the right fit for me. But they are great for a lot of other people! This is just my personal experience. Dr. Hal (Mooney) and his staff have the best Vet practice! The front staff are friendly and helpful with scheduling your appointments whether by a phone call or in person. They are dedicated to making your visit as comfortable as possible. My dog loves the attention and affection she receives at every visit. I have never felt "rushed" through the visit or left not having a plan with all my concerns addressed . Dr."Hal" is simply the best ! Have always received wonderful care for them and much compassion at the sad times when they passed on. Someone was always there to comfort us for as long as we needed, and that was very important. We've experienced, friendly, compassionate and expert care for our pets for over twenty years. Most recently, one of our 11 year old cats appeared to be having an issue; she was quickly tested and, happily, found to be fine. I unfortunately did not have a great experience here. I'm giving two stars because the vet is both very nice and knowledgeable, however, they're extremely expensive and do not explain where costs are coming from - at ALL. And definitely push you to do as much as possible (i.e. spend as much as humanly possible on sometimes completely optional things described as mandatory). Almost every word the guy says and thing he touches costs you money, so beware (and he does not explain what costs what). First time I went in to have a rash & ears looked at with one my dogs and when I left, I was thinking $200 based on previous visits to other vets (in Plainville). On my way out they charged me like triple, straight out of my pocket. Looking at the bill - I was charged for things that I didn't ask for (I.e. - $100 for a "cotton swab", literally a cue tip, to validate the fact that my dog had an ear infection that I already told the vet he did). Anyway, yesterday I had to go back in to get both of my dogs a rabies shot that was due. All I wanted was a rabies shot. As I walked out, I was surprised that the bill was almost $200. Upon further inspection, oh! $120 for a "wellness visit". Then $33 each for the rabies shot. All I asked for was a rabies shot and they found a way to milk another $120 simply by weighing my dogs while they were up on the table getting their shot. Unbelievable. On top of this, the vet tried to push ANOTHER shot which I declined due to my previous visit and knowing he was going to charge the heck out of me for it. I thought I had stopped him but apparently he still found a way to get his money through the "wellness visit" that I did not request, nor did he explain that it would cost something. Just very disappointed with the experience. We'll be taking the hike back to Ragged Mountain in Plainville, because we loved our previous vet. Far more transparent! Read Less

I am pleased to have the opportunity to rate Hopmeadow Animal Hospital as highly as possible. I have been bringing my 2 pugs there for 10 years since I brought them into my home as puppies. From routine care to a serious medical condition, I have always felt comfortable and secure in the knowledge that my dogs get the very best care. On a routine basis, the staff is friendly and helpful without fail. Plus, if you want a smart and sweet Vet, Dr. Hal Mooney is the one. He clearly loves animals and his work. I want to add that my pugs are the first pets I have ever had so my learning curve was huge for quite awhile. Very friendly staff, but the pricing is weird. 54 or 45 can't remember just to get in the door and then 70 something if your pet has a health problem. The first time I asked about it I was told my next visit was free to get in the door-what? But anyways they did charged despite that. I knew at the time that pricing didn't make sense but I didn't question it.. The doctors are really nice, but they also they don't have a lot of equipment for doing tests when your pet gets sick. Also, I went to another doctor and was told my pet needed a lot more shots than they had told me she needed. I wish they had went through her paperwork more thoroughly. I first brought my dog to Hopmeadow Animal Hospital a couple of years ago only because they accepted CareCredit. But I won't go anywhere else with my pets now. Almost a year and half ago we discovered that my Parent's dog, Murphy, had a cancerous tumor. Dr. Mooney gently guided us through all our options and supported our decision to have Murphy undergo surgery. Murphy did wonderfully for more then a year but now he has lymphoma. He doing okay so-far and we are just giving him the best love and care we can for as long as we can. Everyday we are grateful for the valuable time we may not have had with Murphy with out the help and support of everyone at Hopmeadow Animal Hospital. As for Dr. Mooney, he just knows the hearts of animal lovers. He lets you know what's going on in way you can understand. And he LISTENS! My family just loves him! <3Read Less

My dogs and I love the vets and staff here.  They treat my cats and dogs gently and with respect and care.  They are extremely knowledgable and listen to all my concerns and answer all my questions honestly and patiently.  I've been using them for over 20 years and they've always done what was best for my furry family members.  The icing on the cake is that every dog I've had, has been happy to be to be there and enjoys all staff.
