I brought my Grandparents' dog to see Dr. Knaack due to the issues he was having and needing to find out the cause. It was decided that an ultrasound would be necessary and Dr. Knaack discussed why he felt it was necessary. The ultrasound did show things that the xrays taken one week ago at his regular vet's office did not. This was enough to confirm treatment going forward. Dr. Knaack was very compassionate when telling me the results of the ultrasound. Contrary to some of the other reviews I have seen, no unnecessary tests or procedures were done. They could have been, but Dr. Knaack felt they were not going to improve or change things. The ultrasound showed enough to know that at his age and current state of health, treatment was not going to make his life better or let him live longer. Given the scenario of this dog, keeping him comfortable is the best to go. This was Dr. Knaack's recommendation and I absolutely agree with him. I also had an excellent experience working with Nancy and Stacy to get the appointment set up and historical paperwork/xrays over to the office.  I will definitely return when additional specialists are needed for other pets. We have been bringing our animals to Veterinary Specialists (VS) of CT for many years.  They have always been kind and compassionate.  However,  our dog recently needed to go on the medication Metacam for his bad hips.  We purchased two 32 ml bottles of Metacam from VS of CT for about $184.  When we went home and checked 1-800-PETMEDS, they were offering the same two bottles of medication for $104.  Because the prices were so different, we called VS of CT to see if they would match the 1-800-PETMEDS price, or at least reduce their price.  The woman who answered the phone curtly responded that they would not and that there was nothing that they could do.  Our fault for not checking 1-800-PETMEDS first, but an $80 price difference is absurd.  I cannot recommend buying any medications directly from VS of CT, you'll be paying way too much. My dog Lucy was diagnosed with a round cell tumor of the leg at  Connecticut Veterinary Center (totally different place), but they mismanaged her and delayed her care (plus never answered my phone calls, etc etc). So I called Vet Specialists of CT in a panic, and they were able to see Lucy for a surgical consult and treatment the very same day. I saw Dr Currao and her nurse Sarah. I will tell you that Lucy received the very best care that I could have ever hoped for. Dr Currao is as kind as she is thorough and attentive. She is intelligent, methodical, and patient. Dr Currao spent 45 minutes with me in the consult just answering questions about the tumor, and she called me both before and after surgery. Sarah called me later in the evening and the next day just to check on Lucy. They both went above and beyond to take care of my girl, and for that I am eternally grateful.Lucy's tumor ended up being benign, and the surgery was performed expertly. She is well healed and running around again. I have not met a medical or vet professional that I respect more highly than Dr Currao, and I would recommend her to anyone. That is not to detract from the excellent care that Sarah provided. I also want to mention that the staff is incredible here, and they treated me like family the second I walked in the door. There is on vet tech I spoke to on the phone once, Ally, who was kind of rude, but that was the only negative interaction I had the entire time. I have gone to VS for many years now.   The practice is comprehensive (general, specialty and emergency).  Our most recent visit was with my cat Simba, who suffers from chronic licking.  Dr. Galbo was very patient, asked good questions and made recommendations that hadn't been suggested by other vets.   Her specialty in cats and dermatology was one reason I chose her and I am happy to report Simba is licking less!   She followed up with us as promised to see how Simba was doing on the new treatment.  We have also used other vets and would recommend them. Dr. Usechak was great with diagnosing an issue with our German Shepherd that another vet had missed.  Dr. Bisesti is so caring!  She treated our southern rescue pup for heart worm recently and it was clear how much she loved him.  He boarded with VS when we were out of the country and had a great experience.  They carefully monitored him, made sure he got his meds and kept a very active dog calm.  The care, compassion and attentiveness given to him while he underwent this treatment was stellar.   We also used their emergency service when our GS had a heart tumor.  The staff were candid and caring and we were able to call ahead and with the practice being right in WH, we got our darling girl to them in 5 mins. and she was seen right away.  The emergency staff made a gut-wrenching experience much more bearable.  I can't recommend this practice enough! Wow! I walked in through a referral for an orthopedic surgeon consult fully expecting to only be offered an expensive all out solution. Instead, I met with a Dr who listened, fully explained everything that was going on in terms I understood, and was cognizant of the expense then gave me options to care for my dog that were reasonable. It was obvious she cared for my dog's well being as well as how that affects me. She took the time to provide an itemized quote for all options and explained each one clearly. We've been taking our dogs here for years. Every vet we've seen is great both in their knowledge and their patient care. Just wanted to update my review. We had to say goodbye to one of our fur babies about a month ago and the staff was excellent through the entire process. We opted to have our baby cremated and when her ashes were returned, there was a lovely paw print imprint included. About a week ago, our other fur baby went in for a wellness visit. She was incredibly nervous being there even though that's never the case. I'm guessing it was related to her losing her sister and us coming home smelling like the vet. Dr. Zee and her technician were great with her and worked around her nerves. They learned that we recently had to say goodbye to one fur baby and were genuinely compassionate about it. Just a few days later, in the mail, we received a handwritten note from them saying they were sorry for our loss. When I shared the note with my husband, he said, "See, that's the kind of vet I'd drive 30 miles for even if we moved." We really do love Vet Specs and the love and care our dogs always receive. This place did not diagnose my cat correctly at all. Instead they just kept pumping her with "wellness shots" and when asked about why she was drinking more water they replied older cats do (she wasn't even that old). WRONG. They never even checked her kidney function. Then they went on to sell me awful kidney food (after she was diagnosed correctly by a great vet). I would never recommend this place to anyone. Brought my dog into the veterinary side for ear infection they are very kind. They put my dog and me at ease and treated her very well. The next night my cat was having trouble breathing and then I had to rush her to the Hospital side. They were absolutely amazing the staff is caring and kind. I moved to West Hartford a few months ago and needed to get my pup a new vet, based on the high reviews I picked this clinic, let's just say after two visits I will be moving on to a different clinic. I agree with another reviewer that the minute you walk in you're being taken for a ride. There's no personal touch, staff didn't seem to care and the fee is high. Maybe they were great a few years back but that's no longer true. Reg flag #1, my first visit there was a distraught parent holding his pup in one of the rooms, he was obviously frustrated with the result of a surgery that had made his pup worse off and had costed him $5000. Red flag #2, also during my first visit, I was told by the technician that the doctor who saw my pup that day is leaving the practice so the next visit is going to be with a different doctor and if that's OK. Red flag #3, waited 45 minutes just to get a canine influenza shot, then they tried to charge me$94 for it(part one of two so $188 just to complete the series) that's ridiculous. Haven't been to the hospital part of the clinic so I can't comment on it, but if your dog is healthy and only need to receive regular vaccines, I would not recommend this place. Read Less

We have been regulars, or should I say, our Pets, at Veterinary Specialists of CT since 1988.  That's not to say I knew Dr Layton way back In the Day, but don't remember much else.These the practice has evolved into a full service Veterinary practice, including numerous specialty services such as: MRI, Physical & Aqua Therapy, Acupuncture, and Behavioral Therapy.  Not your old country doc's anymore AND 24/7 service!I won't name drop primarily because I like everyone in the practice.  So have our pets including   6 dogs and 3 rabbits that have cycled on their short, but fulfilling lives from '88 to present.  Speaking of which, we have been through some traumatic times too and have been counseled through the hard decision process.Despite, there's always a happy and familiar face greeting us at every visit.  The office staff are fabulous, as well. This place does not even deserve 1 out of 5 stars. I am appalled by their lack of professionalism.My mother brought her dog in earlier this afternoon and the visit was going well enough, everyone seemed friendly and willing to help. They gave her the medications her dog needed and she proceeded to check out. She was surprised when the total was over 600 dollars. Caught off guard, she told them she didn't have that much on hand and wanted to ask about a payment plan. The staff then completely flipped and became very unfriendly and incredibly rude. They demanded she pay in full and told her that she had signed all the papers so she had been made aware. They continued to shame her in front of the entire lobby for her lack of knowledge instead of owning the fact that they had done a poor job relaying information.The staff member who was supposed to go through the paperwork glossed over pricing and repeatedly said, "this doesn't pertain to you" or "you don't need to know this" they did a very poor job of breaking everything down and giving the correct information. A complete rush job.Already embarrassed and uncomfortable they left her waiting in the lobby with her disoriented, and crying dog (who was still groggy from anesthesia) for another 10 minutes. They continued to treat my mother like a criminal and told her "you shouldn't have brought your dog here if you couldn't afford it" another staff member then ripped the medications from her hand and told her "you can't take this with you" then stormed off. My mother is the sweetest woman ever and for her to be treated in such a way absolutely disgusts me.Needless to say our family and friends will not be returning to this practice for it was overpriced and the staff was completely unprofessional.From this day forward I plan to actively discourage anyone from taking their animals to be treated here. We have an English mastiff who a a severe knee problem , our vet had said our Maggie was too old to handle surgery. Brought our cat in near death me they couldn't coordinate even finding feline blood for a transfusion in all of CT. Had to have the cat put down due to their incompetence. I brought my cat, Baby, into the emergency hospital last night for an abscess on her face. (She is a nine-year-old rescue, that has been with me not quite a year yet.) Dr. Serrano performed bloodwork as a precautionary measure, and I am so grateful that he did because my little girl is a diabetic and her blood sugar was over 500. I had no idea. She spent the night, is doing well, and is coming home tonight I am so excited! I actually had Baby scheduled at another specialty hospital. On a whim, I called Veterinary Specialists and spoke with Sara Caelan. I was so impressed with our conversation, and the compassion & knowledge she has, that I canceled at the other facility and came here. We've been to the Vet Specialists of CT once since we moved here for an eye infection.  It's a cute little set of buildings located right next to Hall High School on North Main Street in West Hartford.  They have a vet general practice and the 24/7 emergency care.  The staff was very professional, the facility was clean and well suited, and the care I received seemed good.  It was expensive, but not surprising when you go to a pet ER.  Will use again (hopefully won't need to though!) This thank you is long overdue however with the holidays approaching I felt I needed to tell everyone how wonderful my experience with West Hartford Specialists was. My cat Gracie was hit by a car in July. The first place I took her was Canton 24 hr. emergency center since it was after hours for my regular vet. There I got the bad news that she had a shattered pelvis and a dislocated right hip. I was told I would need to get her to a board certified surgeon. So the next morning we arrived in West Hartford and met with Dr. Leshem. He assured me that everything was fixable. When I first took her home three days after the surgery, I will admit I wasn't sure I did the right thing. She was so weak, would drag herself into the litter box and fell with every step she took. But with the physical therapy given by Barb and teaching me how to work with her, I wish you could see her now. Running all over the house, playing and so happy to be alive. She still needs a ramp to get up on the bed, but uses it with no hesitation and jumps down with no problem. I can't thank Dr. Leshem enough for working his magic and putting her "back together". I brought my cat (Vlad) here for a surgery a few months ago and surgeon Dr Janet Welch was awesome. My cat had presumably gotten hit by a car, and had a dislocated hind leg. The emergency vet I saw at a different vet had attempted to pop his leg back into his hip, but she concluded he would need surgery to fix it. I brought my cat into Veternary Specialists and Dr Welch examined him and exlained to me the surgery he would need. She was also very friendly and comforting. On the day of the surgery she called before, during, and immediately after surgery. It was great to be updated at those times as I was worried about my cat. We are so incredibly thankful for Dr. Leshem and the entire team at Veterinary Specialists of Connecticut. Our Kenai was run over by a car late Thursday evening, and our regular vet at Bolton was unable to perform the surgery needed to repair his shattered pelvic bone. Dr. Leshem did the surgery Friday afternoon and he has been recovering since. The team has been awesome about answering our many check in phone calls and giving us time to visit throughout the holiday weekend and we will hopefully have our boy home tomorrow. After much emotional chaos due to my sudden back leg problem, I've landed in the safest tx facility that offers this specialty/surgeon/surgery/suppory staff (just like Crusoe, the Celebrity Doxie in Ottowa). This was the only emergency center in CT that could immediately, on a Friday (my only day off from work), respond to a same day emergency MRI, board certified neurosurgical consult & neurosurgery. I've never been away from home & would not have chosen this (sorry I kept my illness so secret, Mom & Dad), but I'm surrounded by true 24 hour dedicated, concerned, knowledgeable staff who enjoy their work & adore me. I'm a night owl, even under these circumstances, so it's important to be surrounded by the caring faces I awoke to@11PM. And now I have my very own Rock Star neurosurgeon, Steve, who showed those ruptured discs a thing or two & will follow my care through surgical/medical rehab/safety. If I didn't land here, my fate as a full time therapy dog in my mom's psycho therapy practice would've been sealed. I have a lot to thankful woof about as I recover! Eight weeks ago I Brought my dog here with a ruptured disc Did emergency surgery right away. Thank god for this emergency center. If we did not bring our dog in when we did he would have been paralyzed permanently. I cannot say enough about the Veterinary Specialists of CT. My dog had torn her ACL and she was only a year old. She obviously had many years to live and she was in a lot of pain. My vet recommended Dr. Berzan. Dr. Berzan handled my dog all the way through the process. After the surgery Dr. Berzan called me that night to let me know she had gone through the surgery just fine and was resting. It was not a tech that contacted me or a clerk. It was the surgeon himself. Every visit after that Dr. Berzan met me and my dog outside to see how she was walking and would give me the next set of exercise. Again it was not a tech or staff person that met with me, but the surgeon himself. There was one fee for all of the visits, x-rays, and the surgery. No additional costs. A friend's dog had to have the surger. The place she took her dog to charged less for the surgery, but then there was a fee for every visit afterwards and x-rays etc. She ended up paying more than I did . My dogs knee healed just fine and she has not slowed down since. The surgery was 8 years ago and she is still running. Highly recommend them. L O'Malley Read Less

Dr. Gustafson (known as Dr. Gus) has been the best vet my dog has seen in a lifetime where he's had four or five? My dog is very, very old -- at least 17, maybe 18 -- and maybe nine months ago had a bad mouth infection (he's gotten too old to have teeth cleanings). I thought it was the end. My little dog was drooling blood and clearly in a bad way. Dr. Gus asked if he was still eating, and when I said yes, he said let's try an antibiotic shot. It cleared it right up, and he has had many good days since then, even running many days! I think many vets would have suggested it was time to put a 16 to 17 year old dog down. I've now been here twice. Once for a physical and then again today, two weeks later for a deep cleaning. I have a 5 year old yorkie who has few medical problems thankfully. I would spend every dollar I have to bring Della to this vet. They are wonderful. Every staff member I dealt with on my two visits was phenomenal. Helpful, upbeat, happy, and very caring to Lil Ms. Della Reese. So much that she actually got excited when we pulled up in the parking lot for her second visit. I also love the set up with a nice grassy area where you can walk your dog before and after visits. This place is not cheap but then again your beloved pet is not replaceable. However, I never fell over sold or over charged. Nor did I feel that they cut any corners. Everything they did for Della was thorough and necessary. I can't really comment on major surgeries or treatment of major illnesses, so take that for what it's worth. Come here, I promise you and your pet will not be disappointed. Read Less

He never rushed, and never pushed us to make a decision we were uncomfortable with. It was clear that he obviously cared deeply about the outcome for our family member. We decided on a treatment plan we were all comfortable with. I am happy to report Will has made a full recovery! He never rushed, and never pushed us to make a decision we were uncomfortable with. It was clear that he obviously cared deeply about the outcome for our family member. We decided on a treatment plan we were all comfortable with. I am happy to report Will has made a full recovery! Dr. March has been there every step of the way, calling to check on him often, and is as happy as we are with the results! My dogs was put down here just today. The staff is so caring and compassionate. He went so peacefully and the vet was even nice enough to put him to sleep out in the sunshine. It was so beautiful. They trimmed his tail hair and tied it in a ribbon for us to bring home. Words can't express how grateful I am for this place. They let my little boy go peacefully and in the sun where he belonged. When I first moved to West Hartford from Boston a few years ago I had been referred to a small veterinary practice by a family friend who is a breeder.  Unfortunately, her vet, who is nearing retirement, was hesitant to take on my dog with all of his special health care needs.   He suggested Veterinary Specialists because of their dual set-up of a primary care practice and a referral practice.  I was not initially impressed with Veterinary Specialists and therefore continued to drive my dog back to Boston for all of his appointments.  As it became more difficult to sneak up to Boston for routine vet appointments, I returned to Veterinary Specialists.  Each of our subsequent visits were better than the last.  So when my dog got sick in August, Veterinary Specialists was my first call.  I have since become a regular as we sort out the recent flare up of my dog's medial issues and I have been more than impressed with everyone I have come in contact with. I don't know what changed between August of 2011 and August of 2013 but it was a very positive change and I couldn't be happier with the care my dog (and the school guinea pig) has received. I created an account just so I could write a review.The staff here is really amazing, and you know that they actually care about each animal that comes in. When we had to put our dog down last summer, we got a handwritten card from his vet, and from his physical therapist, the latter of which worked exclusively with our dog for months. The cards were personal and sincere, and it meant the world to us that they thought to do that.Everyone I know has been happy with these vets, as have I.Additionally, at the end of last year, I adopted another dog and we've been here often to deal with parasites and other issues (most of which were because my dog was only a few months old and she was at the shelter for over a month), and the staff here has been tremendously helpful in solving any of my dog's issues. She has grown tremendously and is a healthy and happy dog now, and a lot of that is a result of her veterinary care. Read Less

For many years, we used this vet, but the shameful way that a young vet treated us on the day that I needed to have my beloved dog euthanized has made it impossible to trust them again.  Unfortunately, they also failed to correctly diagnose my dog's tick-borne disease, and we spent several years going to an out-of-state specialist for treatments that did no good.  The lack of correct treatment during that time led to such a worsening of his condition that we could not save him when they finally got the right diagnosis. 13 years we went to Vet Spec. of Conn. and we were very happy. grateful, their service was bar none. Dr. Berzon is an exceptional surgeon, and the Vets we had were the best, they really cared, and we knew it.... ....fast forward to spring 2010, Both Huskies went in for regular exam and shots... the interns did most of the work and poorly at very best. then upon leaving they greeted us with a fairly large bill...and then we learned their rates increased considerably. OK they were are "our" vets..........Unfortunately in the summer 2010 my 5yo developed a cough.After all the appointments, X-rays, medications, worthless tests, and over $1200.00 in bills...they did not have an answer or a clue... they did suggest another $300.00 test, our last time there...but the service was so awful and they were more concerned about getting their money, literally after every visit, I was forced to sign a legal "contract" so they could take legal action if needed...to sue me, they made a big deal of it,, even charged us interest...(I' was a 13-14 year patron) anyway after 6-8 months, we paid in full,. . but not once did someone call or show concern for the dogs issues..so I asked for our records on both our dogs ....We recently found it out to be a food allergy...we changed the food,..$0.00 priceless!...The Vet Specialists of Ct . had exceptional service, fair rates, and real care...but later purchased an MRI machine/ built a building...and we then we paid big $$$ for ~0~ nada ~ nothing. service was of no value. ....They lost their way, so I lost my shirt, my hat and coat.... we hope they find their way back . I have gone to vet spec for over 20 years and I have lost pets and gotten new ones but the care that you are given and the care that I expect is something no other vet has given to us, for us no one can match for the care we get at vet spec.I would like to thank they again for all the top care that you all do and hope that this will tell knew customer thinking of going to you that after 20 years if I still am going there and the parking lot is full all the time, they have to be doing something right. we are Boxer breeders and need trained vets on call 24 seven , and have gtten that here. Dr. Knaack was referred by my vet regarding an ongoing ear infection. Had my dog's info faxed and filled out a form with all medications. Dr. Knaack didn't even look at my dogs info prior to the appointment (had 8 days to view) and had to ask me (over the phone because I couldn't get the time off & had my mom take him) what medications my dog was on and how long (my vet faxed that info over). Dr. wanted my dog to have an MRI that would cost between $1500 - $1600 to "see" if there was a nerve disease and if not then it's most likely a really bad ear infection and my dog will need a stronger antibiotic for a longer period of time. I told the Dr that it makes more sense to eliminate the lesser of the two suggestions instead of gambling with the more expensive way. I can tell he was not happy with my decision; I asked for him to prescribe the stronger antibiotic for a longer period and he said he would. Instead he ended up giving my dog the lower miligrams of antibiotics for a longer period. I called their office twice (one day in between) to find out why he gave my dog the lower mg and no one has an answer and the Dr is no where to be found. I would NEVER recommend Dr. Knaack and will suggest the same to my vet. Read Less

I love this place and I think their staff are excellent in addition to their doctors.  I've had 2 dogs and 3 cats go to them over the years and they've been amazing and generous in their treatment.  I've also had to get emergency appts (during regular hours) with them various times and they've always found time to get my sick pet into the office for a checkup.Lastly, when I've had to "say goodbye" to a beloved pet, they were so awesome there to the point that I've written Thank You notes to the staff to tell them how great they were in being patient and loving with myself, my family and my loss.  I can't recommend this place high enough.  I hear from friends that the care at my vet is too costly but I feel that it's all worth it for the care that my pets get there.  You can't put a price on that.
