Lums Pond Animal Hospital

I've never liked a veterinarian office more than this one, and my dog loves the staff so much that I practicallyhave to drag him out of the office to go home. They treat us like we are their family. Dr. Downs has been seeing my Boston Terrier since he was a puppy. She's always addressed my concerns throughly, and offer detailed explanation of her thoughts on particular aspects of pet health (an example is difference between flea and tick treatments) while offering options to suit my families needs. Some people have said to me that they think this office is too expensive. Personally (I'm far from well off financially), I don't think anyone should aim for the cheapest option for healthcare needs (whether for a human or a pet) because cheaper doesn't always mean better. I'll gladly pay more for quality care. Read Less

Excellent doctors! They are very thorough and caring. Explain things to us so we know the pros and cons of a treatment or vaccine. We have been going here for years and they have taken care of three of our Labrador Retrievers, two of which we have seen into old age and they helped to let them pass on without pain and suffering. Not sure how their prices compare to other hospitals as we have not wanted to take our pet to any other place. Read Less

I have loved this veterinary clinic for almost a year, until today. I brought my dog in previously for a problem with his leg. The vet couldn’t figure out what it was but put him on anti-inflammatory medicine. She said if he didn’t get better to call and she would refill it, she said I have no problem doing that. Today I called to say he was having issues again and if I could get the refill. They said yes, then called back and said he must come in first. I let them know right now I just don’t have the money for an office visit and the medicine. She suggested I get a Care Credit card to pay them. I let her know I have one and that is what I have been using to pay them, they are on the pricey side but was always so great to my baby that I didn’t mind. She said they would give him one week of medicine to try but then he would have to come in. When I got to the clinic they had changed their mind again and only gave him three days and then said he would have to come in. Also, they changed the dosage since they realized last time they didn’t give him the correct amount for his weight. Turns out he was on to low of a dose and she upped it. After speaking with them at length they decided to go ahead and give the one week of medicine they promised. The staff and vets have always been super friendly and kind to all my dogs. Today I realized why the vets were friendly, because I always had money to spend. The staff was still as great today but the vet could care less. I understand this is a business, but they need to understand that pet parents are important. I have been a loyal customer that referred many people to this vet practice. Now, I will find a vet office that really cares about my babies. Because you chose a $65 Office visit over helping me out, I have chose to find another vet and to stop referring people. Instead of feeling like I was listened to and valued, that you truly cared that my baby was in pain, I felt only that I didn’t matter to them today and was just a money symbol. Excellent doctors!!! Take very good care of our dogs Leo & Sushi. Also, the Kennels, and grooming area is very clean, nice size cages, and they have been grooming be our dogs for about 8 years. Very nice animal hospital!!! Read Less

I've gone to them for many years and they have always been kind and respectful. When it came time to let my baby go a week ago they were patient and compassionate. The took their time explaining and more importantly they were respectful of my baby girl. I miss her but I knew it was time and she let me it was time. She will always be in my heart. Good place. The front staff feels stiff at times, as if they want you in and out in minimal time. Kind of wish it was a little more relaxed, but they are friendly and informative when you warm them up. Doctors are all friendly and informative. I like this vet in comparison to others in the area because I never once felt somewhat verbally tricked into something that I may not have really needed. Others have left me frustrated with ear cleaning charges I didn't know I was paying for, or small procedures that could have waited until next visit. I'm staying with this vet. Read Less

I used the same Vet in New Jersey for 15 years, so when we moved to DE, I kept driving to him, as we all loved him and the other vet at his practice.  I finally asked him if he knew any of the Vets at Lums Pond, since it is 5 minutes from us, and he said yes, the sister of the other vet in the office works there and he would highly recommend her.  I have now been to Lums pond 2 times with my Abby. Everyone there is wonderful and they really put both myself and my dog at ease.  They made leaving my beloved vet in NJ easier. Read Less

The staff were extremely friendly. The doctor was not feeling wee but we could not tell because she gave her full attention to our cat. The assistant was very nice. First time going here. I cannot say enough good things about this office. From the minute I walked in, to the minute I walked out, from the professionals at the front desk, all the way to Dr. Downs, this office made, what used to be a very stressful experience, so serene and inviting. They have cared for my Mastiffs and Yorkie for 11 years now. From surgeries to peacefully laying our dog down of old age EVERYTHING they do they do as if a human and I love that about them. I trust them w/ my dogs life!!! Read Less

I have taken my dog here for 2 years for his annual visit. Everyone has been so sweet and friendly. My dog is super dog aggressive, and they even help me schedule my appointments so that I'm visiting at not too busy times. They also let me sit in the exam room to fill out paper work for that reason as well. I recommend them to everyone.Read Less

We've been taking our two Greyhounds and 2 kitties to Dr Crozier since moving here 3yrs ago. She is very caring and always takes whatever time is needed to evaluate and treat our pets. The follow up calls after lab work and tests are wonderful.  Staff always greets us like family and put our pets at ease. I always take our Greyhounds to the grooming center for their baths and nail trims.  Staff is very caring and our pups look forward excitedly to their visits. I would love to see an expansion of the boarding facility to include suites.  Our pups need a more quiet environment than available with typical kennel structure. For now now we have to use another facility for boarding. Read Less

The staff at Lums Pond Animal Hospital and the groomers are amazing. Our cat Sophie is not a people person when it comes to people she doesn't know. Whenever we take her there for her annual check-up or just to get her claws cut, she is just so mellow and relaxed. It's because of the wonderful staff. It is absolutely incredible the service that my 4 month old puppy recieved and was in such caring and loving hands all at first sight. People are so friendly with contageous personalities. I'm so glad i was referred to by my mom. I couldn't have chosen anymore of a second caring hime for my lil 4 month old shiba Inu puppy. Everything about this facility is amazing! It's clean and everyone is friendly. My dog was completely at ease while getting his shoulder checked out. I cannot express enough how pleased I was with my visit! The facility is beautiful and clean and all the people in the front are sweet. I had been trying to find a vet who would attend to my hedgehog who ended up having mites, and with little luck in the area it was a relief to find this place after searching for so long. The doctor and assistant were so sweet and patient with my little prickly boy and very professional. She even called me a couple weeks later to see how he was doing, as well as called again to give me some helpful information on bathing my boy. This place is amazing and I'm so grateful to them for helping me and my hedgehog. Read Less

I would not recommend this vet. They charge an exorbitant amount of money just to bring your pets in, and some of the office staff does not seem to know how to do their jobs. Case in point: I recently brought my kitties in about their allergies and when I checked out, they told me the cost was almost $400. I asked the receptionist if she could show me the charges, and she said she could only print off a list of charges after I paid. What?!? Then when she finally figured out how to print off a list of charges before I paid, she printed off charges from several months prior. A final word of caution: it takes FOREVER to get in and out of there. Both times I brought my cats there, we were there for 1.5 hours or more--and this was for routine work. Don't they understand that cats don't like to be in their carriers for such a long time?!?! I think they try to be thorough, which is why the visits take awhile. But it seems like training the front desk staff would be a good start for minimizing the checkout time at the very least. Read Less

Thanks to all the staff for being so helpful starting with Jamie who took my phone when I made the appt. Dr Crosier answered all my questions(and I had many). They are so understanding and always have availability and good hours. I'm a teacher and being able to come in at 7 pm is SOOO HELPFUL. I've been in 3 times for my dog post surgery and they never charge me for a follow up visit. I will never switch as long as I'm in delaware. Read Less

I was so impressed with the service and care for our pets. Our vet unexpectedly closed their doors and for a pet owner relaying on prescriptions, the situation was stressful. Our pet pharmacy referred us and I'm grateful. I loved the customer service which provided; the welcome sign, welcoming Simba and Luna. The fluffy towels scented with Feliway really calmed them down. The doctor spent time asking questions and making recommendations. It was like no other experience I have had for our pets from a animal hospital or vet office. So thankful for making a stressful situation easy, and your caring approach to our furry loved ones.Read Less

We love Lums Pond and Dr Crozer, she has seen our beagle through pancreatitis and one of our goldens through seizures and surgery to remove mast cell tumor. They are a little more expensive then some of the other vets in area but they do not try to hard sell you on things you cannot afford. Read Less

We made the mistake of leaving Lums Pond 2 years ago for a vet in Middletown. What a huge error in judgement on our part! It was a decision based on financial need and it compromised the health of both our Golden Retrievers. Drs Crozier, Thompson and Downs along with their entire staff are the best combination of professionalism and compassion. Read Less

We switched to Lums Pond after having horrible experiences with another practice and we couldn't be more pleased! We have 4 pups and they are our children so we take their medical care seriously. Several years ago a doctor at Lums Pond literally saved our pet's life, so I'm very disappointed in our recent experiences. The doctors, techs, and office staff cannot seem to communicate properly between themselves and to their patients. In addition to errors with our prescription and appointments (which resulted in lots of wasted time), excessive wait times, and a doctor who lacked empathy (and couldn't get our pet's sex correct), what we were told would happen with our pet's treatment and what actually happened turned out to be very different (and stacked so as to make the most money for the hospital). We expressed our concerns but no one made any effort to follow up or rectify the situation, so we will be taking our pet's care elsewhere. Read Less

I have taken my dogs and cats to LPAH and specifically Dr. Crosier for years.  We now live in PA and still bring them down because I won't go anywhere else.  The boarding and grooming staff are excellent as well! Read Less

This is by far one of the best vet facility I have been at and with 5 pets we have had in the last 10 years we have been to a few vets.     Staff & doctor are friendly and caring towards the customer and pet.   Their demeanor shows that they truly care and take time to explain the prognosis and answer any questions you may have.The facility itself is large & extremely clean and I would know as I am allergic to pet dander.  Did not sneeze or sniffle the all time I was there. Lums Pond Animal Hospital is 5 stars period. I had a VERY bad experience at another animal hospital to the point I feel was negligence and could have been given a few more years. I searched for a new facility when I got my 2 new baby Ragdolls. Lums Pond was a little farther but well worth the trip. This facility is VERY clean. Every time we've been there, it's clean, friendly atmosphere and NEVER smelled anything --if you know what I mean. We were able to choose the doctor we preferred as there are several who work mainly with cats or dogs, although all are knowledgeable with all. The doctor we chose is very nice and caring and compassionate--not only to the pet but to the "parents" as well. Our one pet was diagnosed with asthma, which isn't as serious as most, but just as disturbing--you hate to hear anything is wrong. Our doctor was very thorough is explaining the condition, offered options of treatment and tests and helped me decide what to do to develop a plan. I got her prescriptions the same day and she is already feeling better. Great place. Glad I found it. I wouldn't go anywhere else. After what I went through at the other place, I wouldn't say that if I didn't mean it. Read Less

Great vets! Very friendly staff and the fees are slightly below our previous vet. Dr Thompson was our first vet and he was very friendly. Called the next day to check up on our dog. They also tried hard to accommodate the treatment plan to our budget, which was great :)   The only thing I would caution for is that their visiting veterinary "cardiologist" is not board certified. LPAH is Awesome.  The place is clean, spacious and the staff is amazing.  The minute you walk in the door you and your pet are treated with a feeling of caring from the staff.  You are checked in immediately and every time I have been there (which has been a lot)  someone always walks over and talks to me and my dogs. I believe they actually saved the life of my dog Marco.  Dr. Russell diagnosed a problem immediately and sent us right to Vet Specialty Center.  She followed up with phone calls to check up on Marco.  When we rescued Bailey and then Mason, we stumbled upon Dr. Smagala who is beyond awesome.  I want her for my doctor!!!  She always gets down on the floor and talks and plays with my dogs.  She is thorough and concerned about my pups.  She has called me after various appointments to check in.  I can't say enough good things about LPAH, the staff and Dr. Smagala!!  If you are looking for an above average vet go to Lums Pond. I can't express just how grateful I am to have taken our dog to Lums Pond. They were all so kind and compassionate towards us and our 12 year old lab, Lucky. Unfortunately, our first trip there was to put our baby girl to rest.. Everyone there stayed an hour past the time that they close just so we could spend time with her and say our goodbyes. We've been here with a very sick cat, a cat we had to put down (the vet was so tender and loving with him) and a new rescue dog. Each experience was phenomenal. We will never go anywhere else with our pets. From the moment you walk in the door every single person fawns over your pet. The facility is spacious and clean. Every time we go, we say "that vet was amazing lets ask for him/her next time" and the next time we forget and whichever vet we get is just as wonderful as the one before. When my cat was mysteriously and seriously ill Dr. Downs spent almost two hours with us. I don't find them to be much more expensive than any other vet. They're upfront about their costs giving you treatment plans and discussing every single line item. They didn't make me feel bad for not choosing an expensive test and instead suggested a lower cost work around.  The treatment and peace of mind you and your pets get from the moment you walk on the door is worth every penny. We've been going to Lums Pond Animal Hospital specifically for Dr. Downs for several years. The facility is always sparkling clean, and the waiting room is large with two different divisions - makes it a lot easier if you have dogs who need some space. The staff is always friendly, competent and helpful. The best of all is Dr. Downs. I have pit bull mixes and past vets have been nervous about them. This is purely breed bias, as all of my dogs are very well behaved and extremely friendly! This is just one reason why we love Dr. Downs - she is very confident handling my dogs! She demonstrates a deep understanding of dogs and is always VERY thorough. I'm a detail-oriented person, and even so, she never disappoints! She always provides me with thorough explanations, options, and possibilites. She's as good with people as she is with dogs, and I honestly cannot think of a better veterinarian. We are so lucky to have found her! Since shifting to Lums Pond, we've also had the pleasure of working with Dr. Smagala. Although I don't know her quite as well, I can say it's been a pleasure to work with her. She is very thorough and very friendly. Your pets treatment will be almost better then yours at this place. Top notch vet care no doubt, if you have an emergency don't think twice, but if it can wait, shop around and go somewhere else. I got a prescription for my animal and a month later after the sample ran out they would not fax the prescription that only takes 2 minutes, instead they are making me come down and pick a hand written script up, that isn't finished and should have been finished when I paid my $400+ bill for my two animals. I have been a client of Dr. Thompson for 20 years. Since his business has grown and he has hired on many vets and vet techs, has really changed the how I feel about his business. As much as I try to hang on and be a client, it gets more and more difficult every time I call. I guess us ole timers remember Dr. Bob back in the day when he was personable and he cared about our pets and us. ... It's not that way anymore. It's a major business and although they act like they care, come time in need, they don't come through for you. You know why... because there are 10 other clients in the waiting room who will take your appointment. All the great vets have left... Dr. Mitchell, Dr. Mckenzie, Dr. Ford... we miss you... you guys were the best replacements when Dr. Bob wasn't available. Take this from someone who's been there for 20 years.... AND when you board your dog there, and you get that special waiting room while you wait for the vet to come in, you can see what goes on, their walks consist of them walking the dog to the outside kennel, taking the dog that previously placed in there, returning it to the inside kennel, bringing out another dog, and taking your dog and returning it... nice walk... ya think! I hate to give Dr. Bob and poor rating but it's not him, it's his staff. Read Less
