I have belonged to VCA Kirkwood Animal Hospital for nearly 10yrs now and had no prior complaints with this organization. Dr. DeMarco has always been extremely knowledgeable and compassionate on every visit. The front desk staff go above and beyond. I was always willing to pay the higher fees compared to other local vets because I was satisfied with the care my dogs received. My experience with this organization all changed on April 11. My 3yr old Doberman became ill and vomited several times throughout the day. The following morning I took her to VCA to be examined. The vomiting had resolved at that point but she still remained weak. She was seen by a new vet I wasn't familiar with, Dr Ashley Roper. During my dog's assessment everything appeared normal. Vital signs were stable. Labs were all normal minus a slight increase in her WBC's. Dr Roper suggested an X-ray of her abdomen to r/o an obstruction. As she was going over the results with me she didn't seem overly concerned. But requested I waited until she spoke with Radiologist to confirm. After speaking with Radiologist she came in the room and says, "It's not looking good". She proceeded to tell me that my dog needed exploratory surgery to r/o 1 of 3 causes due to pockets gas in her stomach. She told me the exploratory surgery alone would cost me $4,000 (needed within the next 24hrs) on top of corrective surgery and recovery time in ICU. End result could be $10-15,000 and there is a good chance my dog would not survive the extensive surgery. I questioned myself where I was going to come up with that kind of money, and she told me if my dog didn't have surgery she would need to be euthanized because it would be a "true miracle" if she survived the night. I asked what her odds of survival were without the surgery and she stated, "like winning the Powerball". She then said "I will give you A COUPLE OF MINUTES to think about it" and left me in the room heart broken and crying. I couldn't sense an ounce of compassion from this woman. I also couldn't justify euthanizing my dog because she appeared to be in good health, minus vomiting less than 24hrs prior. I told Dr Roper I had to think about all this and was taking my dog home with me. She then made me sign a waiver because I was going against her medical advice, even sent me home with a cremation package and told me their last apt for the evening was 7:30pm. I got home that night. My dog ate dinner. Pooped. Didn't vomit. Even went outside chasing squirrels. The next morning she woke up and was 100% back to her happy energetic self. It's been nearly a week now, and I can't help but wonder how many animals and owners had to suffer because of carelessness like this. I am so grateful I listened to my heart and not Dr Roper. Me and my miracle dog will be going elsewhere from here on out! Read Less

VERY pricey. I went in for an annual check-up for my 2yr old dog and wound up getting billed $240. You have to go there knowing exactly what you want and what you don't want. The staff was very friendly and the ambiance is nice, but I didn't feel there could be an open discussion about vaccinations and tests. I think $140 for a fecal test and heartworm test is WAY overpriced and unnecessary, especially since my dog has been on heartworm medication since forever and it was completely unnecessary. I should have come to the clinic knowing that. I'll probably look elsewhere for next time. I feel like VCA is too big a corporation and because of that, only care about the $$. I plan on looking for a vet that's more practical and open and not trying to pry as much $$ out of me as possible. Read Less

They gave us some treatment options which included prices. We decided together what the best option was. The next day she still was not feeling well so we brought her back. They ran tests and took excellent care of our baby. We were able to bring her home that day. Sadly, she passed away a few days later. They took such excellent care of our feelings and of our angel. They said they would check her out to see what caused her death for free. We decided to creamate her and bring her ashes home. They gave us a plaque of her paw print, some fur and a very sweet card.
