My two favorite people. I took my cat to Dr. Thornburg back in 2012. My cat was so sick and had to be put down. I never cried in front of people before, but Dr. Thornburg and his wife felt like folks I have been knowing all along. He has taken care of all seven of my cats including one who died from old age. Dr. T is irreplaceable along with his beautiful wife. I will miss them both. Read Less

My first visit to Dr.T today and I am so glad that I did not listen to the negative reviews! Before I gush about these folks, let me prepare you for how this works:1. You call, say hello, explain yourself and your situation. You will be speaking with Dr. T's wife who will assist you and tell you when to come in for what you're looking for.2. Yes they don't do appointments, but they have *times* for specific work. If you're not given a specific window, best get there before/around the time they open if you don't want to wait super long. 3. The waiting room does not have a person to greet you. This office is small, only three people working in it that I saw (Dr. T, his wife, and the vet tech) so just sign in on the sheet and take a seat. 4. Bring a book. you will wait for a minimum 30-45 minutes but be prepared for longer. The reason that the wait is so long is because they do not rush their customers. They are running a small personalized care operation. Ok now time to gush. These people truly love animals. They take the time to listen to your concerns and thoroughly examine your furry friend. My dad is a vet tech (over 30 years) so please trust me when I say that they know what they are doing. Whatever questions you have, ask them! If you want to know how something works, or ask about any behavior you animal exhibits, do it. They value your time and they know what they are talking about. You'll learn something new. I don't agree that Dr.T isn't good with people, I found him to be really great and funny. They are both a joy to talk to, and I left my appointment smiling. It's just really nice to meet good caring folks. Also, they don't price gouge you at all. The prices were absolutely fair. if you live in the area, I have no doubt that this is one of the best places to take your pet. No frills, no rush, fair prices, nice people, wonderful personalized care for your pet. Customer for life! Read Less

Doctor Thornburgh and his wife run a wonderful animal hospital. They have provided excellent care to a number of our pets. They really put the animal's welfare first and foremost. Doctor Thornburgh has treated our animals for minor and major illnesses and injuries. His dedication to treatment, and quality of care, is so valuable, especially when something serious is wrong. Knowing that he is looking after our pets gives enormous comfort. Getting an appointment entails waiting in the lobby which can take time. Bet to get there early or very late. The focus of the practice is on the animals welfare, not the owner. If you really care about your pets than this is not an issue. Read Less

I took my dog here when I was going on vacation for broading. When I pick her up she had dog feces all over her and her nose was discolored. When I made a comment to the vet wife who also works there which I said why do my dog have feces all over her in her head all over her legs. She replied and said my dog probably rolled in her own feces. This made me very upset then she tried to charge me for a medicated bath and I said I'm not paying that I didn't ask for it plus my dog has shit all over her so I will have to bathe her at home. Very poor customer service. I'm so upset my dog had to go through this she probably was stuck in the kennel for the weekend without being walked or took out the cage. Read Less

I'm fairly new to the area and have my beloved cat.  He was recently injured and I needed to find a new vet that I could trust.  I read the mixed reviews here and decided to go.  I was there when they opened with a few others ahead of me.  The place is just what I had anticipated... nothing fancy (and that's okay).  I prepared myself for the hour + wait.  It took about an hour and a half but it was worth it.  The Dr. seemed to know what was wrong with my cat (he wasn't in the best mood).  And he gave him a shot and a few prescriptions to follow up with.  The bill was very reasonable as I was nervous to walk out with a couple grand like my previous vet experiences.  Will be coming back! Their prices are cheap, but that's the only thing going for it. I called in advance to find out the price of the exam I wanted for my dog. The woman on the phone said I needed to meet first with the vet to get a price. I went on a Sat. and because they don't take appointments, waited for 2 hours in an extremely crowded, unpleasant waiting room. I finally got called back with my dog and said the name of the exam. They'd never heard of it and said "just tell us what you need," no real consultation. So I looked it up on Google. After leaving I had to return to leave another payment for the lab work that they 'hadn't known about.' I got the results and it was for something totally different. I wasted like $250 for the WRONG test. I expected the vet to know what this test was for my dog, not for me to have to Google it. They were rushed and appeared stressed. And there was an uncomfortable dynamic between the vet and his assistant (his wife, I believe) - they were short and snappy with each other, which was unpleasant to be around. Overall, a very disappointing experience and I will not go back. Read Less

Long overdue review of a great vet.  I've been taking my cat to Petworth Animal Hospital for years now, and can't imagine going anywhere else.  My loyalty was assured when I took my cat to Friendship Heights Animal Hospital bc of his sudden lethargy and weight loss, where he was diagnosed with aggressive throat cancer -- sans biopsy (!).  This was over the July 4th weekend, otherwise I would have taken my kitty straight to Petworth.  As it was, Friendship Heights basically gave him a death sentence:  they told me there was nothing they could do, that the that growing cancer would slowly make eating too painful, and that I should just try to make him comfortable for the next couple weeks of life he had left. On the advice of a friend who was doing her medical residency at Georgetown (who found the idea of a cancer diagnosis without a biopsy super odd), I took him to Petworth ... where the Dr diagnosed my cat with treatable stomatitis, removed some teeth, popped some antibiotics in him and turned right back around to me.  Had I not gone to get the 2nd opinion from Dr. T, I would slowly starved my cat to death.  That is horrifying.  Thanks to Dr T, four years later my kitty is strong and young and as alive as ever. The Dr + wife team at Petworth genuinely care about their clients (both the human and non-human kind).  Although other reviewers have noted their initial impression of the Dr's bedside manner, I can tell you that the Dr's devotion to his craft is why people come from all over the DMV area and wait for 30-40 minutes for the Dr to see their pet.  He's just THAT good.  True animal whisperer.  The place is very no frills; the perks are that the prices reflect that.  Very affordable.  Show up early (15-30 min before opening), bring a book, and chat up the other pet parents in the waiting room who have been coming to him for years and years.  Dr. T won't waste your money on needless exams or medications -- he'll be straight with you if he thinks an expensive surgery or treatment just isn't worth it.  He was very kind to me when I had to put down my older cat due to kidney infection, and gently advised against expensive surgeries to try to extend her life (even tho he could have made more money by doing so).  True gem.  We are very lucky to have him here in DC, and I can't imagine going anywhere else. I'm ok with his personality, he is great at what he does so I don't sweat it that I don't get a huge smile and greeting when I go because I get that from my happy pets! (Although I did catch the Dr playing with my puppies so seeing a softer side was nice ha!)The staff is always friendly and just be mindful they deal with A lot of animals and people daily so while they try to always be professional and friendly they are also busy so don't take it personal if they are direct and to the point. Overall, I thought Dr. Thornburgh was fine. He's not the nicest man, but who cares. I just want someone who is going to take care of my dogs. A huge negative about this place is that they will not confirm a prescription with 1-800 Pet Meds so you can buy meds online. When I visited with my dogs, Dr. Thornburgh only had ONE 6 month supply of Sentinel (heartworm preventative). I needed this for both of my dogs and they didn't have enough. I just tried to order more from 1-800 Pet Meds and Dr. Thornburgh won't verify the prescription. Instead, the office lady told me I had to get it directly from them. No other vet does this. I get it, you want to charge more for the meds and keep your practice going, but if you don't have it, then I have to go to another vet and pay for an examination so they can prescribe heartworm preventatives. Ridiculous.Another negative about this place is that they don't make appointments. You have to show up and wait in line. I had read about this ahead of time so I got there 15 minutes before they opened and I was third in line. It still took about 2 hours total, so just be prepared. Another negative: I brought two dogs in and was charged an office visit fee for each dog. I get it, I brought two dogs but I have never had a vet charge me an office visit fee for each one. I've been charged an examination fee for each, which makes sense because the vet is examining each dog, but for this particular visit I was literally just getting a bordatella shot for each dog. I had up-to-date records from another DC vet that showed they had been examined in the last 6 months. All in all, this place was not much cheaper than other DC vets and it wasn't worth it. Read Less

An incredibly difficult story to tell, even writing this is upsetting. My pup's day care accidentally closed the car door on his tail and broke it (pretty bad break with exposed bone). They immediately took him to Petworth Animal Hospital around 5:55pm on a Wed. They admitted him and promptly closed at regular business hours at 6pm. At 6:20p after speaking to the van driver by phone, he said I will get my dog back from the vet on Friday (2 days later), which I would unacceptable and immediately called the vet. To my incredible shock, their phone was unavailable and I wasn't even able to leave a message because the mailbox was full! At that point I had no idea whether my pup received any care or what state he was in. I also called my regular vet in Dupont and asked if anyone had requested his records, they had not. Note, this was Wednesday evening and Petworth Animal Hospital does NOT have hours on Thursday. I spent all night agonizing about the state of my pup and drove first thing in the morning to see if I could retrieve him. I spent 4hrs in the rain waiting for someone to show up at NOON at which point (after some rude words from Dr. Thornburg) I was able to get them to release him. My pup was in so much pain he was barely able to stand! When I walked into the street, he peed for an incredibly long time, indicating to me that over the previous 18 HOURS he had no bathroom breaks. I have no idea whether he had any food or water, his tail was not bandaged, he wasn't wearing a cone and was likely tending to his wound over that period. No one contacted for his medical records or me to explain the medical situation. So these people admitted an incredibly sick dog, did not have his medical history, and did not administer any care allowing him to suffer for 18 hours. It was not only irresponsible for him to have been admitted in the first place, it was was downright cruel to abandon him the way they did! It was appalling behavior for a few extra bucks and should not be in business if this is their motivation! Read Less

I have NEVER experienced a veterinarian facility so horrifying. I would never let these people touch my pets. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE.My roommate and I recently took in a young cat, and we needed to bring her to a vet to see if she was chipped/tagged or had any evidence of previous ownership. (We want to ensure we aren't taking someone else's pet, and we would like to return her if she's lost.)The first red flag was that this place would not schedule an appointment for us. When we called to set one, they refused to give us an appointment, insisting that we come in during their afternoon hours of 4:30pm-6:00pm.When we walked into the place at 4:30pm, we saw the waiting area was tiny, and it was already packed with other people and pets. The place REEKED of urine and dirty litter, and there was vomit on the floor that had crusted over. The most unclean veterinarian facility I have ever been inside. There is no receptionist. You have to sign in on a sheet by a closed door, and take your seat. We sat there for about 15 minutes listening to the other people in the room talk about declawing their cats -- one person had declawed his cats because trimming a cat's claws is "too hard" and the other because his "nine or ten" cats "kept killing my birds." Another note on those nine or ten declawed cats -- they are sometimes attacked by the feral cats "out back" that he feeds, because the feral cats sometimes "get in."Now, all of these folks were pleasant, polite, and seemed well-meaning when it came to their animals. I don't think they realized how horrible it is to do that to your cat. Clearly the staff and doctors in this place don't feel it necessary to share how harmful and inhumane it is to declaw cats. Instead, this place keeps declawing cats because people think it's "too hard" to trim their nails...We fled the place after another 5 minutes -- after a staff woman came out, checked the sheet, and wordlessly walked back inside.I would not trust this place to HANDLE any animal, let alone perform a medical procedure, prescribe or administer medication, or diagnose an issue. This place clearly has NO REGARD for the animals they are treating. Why? Because: 1) Forcing frightened animals to wait in a packed waiting room for indefinite periods of time. (Judging by the people we encountered, 40-45 minutes, but judging by other reviews, HOURS) Why wouldn't you schedule appointments? That's easier for your staff and for the animals you're serving!2) Providing an unsanitary waiting room, and not having the slightest decency to keep the place clean. If the waiting room is that disgusting, what does the rest of the facility look like where the customers/patients don't see??3) Allowing ignorant or incompetent owners to do something harmful and inhumane to their pets. That is despicable.I honestly don't know how this place could have such a high rating. While I commend the place for their reasonable prices, I am horrified by the poor quality and clear lack of care. Disgusting. Read Less

DC's BEST kept secret.  Shhhh.  This is a vet who TRULY cares about animals.  He's a no nonsense realist who isn't interested in all the mumbo jumbo human diagnosis machines that jack up the bill....why? because he KNOWS what is wrong with your pet instinctively, and probably has a conscience.People may not know that behind the gruff exterior is a man who volunteers his time spaying and neutering all of the cats they pick up on sweeps for Alley Cat Allies.  I wish there were more vets like him, who aren't out there to pay off their high vet school bills by sending a constipated cat for $400 blood work before even giving it water. I've only been to their office twice, to bring my cats in for a a checkup after a few years. I was apprehensive after reading some of these reviews, but I couldn't have been more happy with the Doctor and his wife. They were very good with my kitties - you can really tell Dr. T loves animals. I hate leaving my cats overnight, but Lydia needed to have some dental work done (which I was expecting) and Mrs T was very nice when I called a few times throughout the day and the next morning to ask how she was doing (my cat, not her lol)The first time I was there, there was 4 or 5 people in the waiting room, the second time I was there there was more - maybe 6 or 7. Each time everyone was very friendly and talking about their pets etc...  During the conversation I asked everyone how long they had been coming to to the Doctor's office - I was surprised that about half of the people had been going there for over 10 years. Everyone raved about him so I'm taking the negative reviews here with a grain of salt.My only (minor) complaints are the wait times due to their not having appointments - and the size of the waiting room (especially with a few large dogs) but it's really not that bad so I didn't even take a star away from my rating. I made a same day appointment for my cat Khloe' Katdashian. I was allowed to bring her in right away and the only minus was there was a bit of a wait, but maybe I should expect that with a same day call. The office does not have any bells or whistles and that is fine by me. I am only at a vet for pet care. The visit 50.00.  So, I have read some reviews about the doc's personality, but I found him and his wife to be lovely. The exam went well. we had a chat about Khloe and addressed her anal gland problem. We had a chat about her cardiac health and the need for teeth cleaning. I am going to be making a tooth cleaning appointment for her. I would recommend you give them a try and see what you think. Read Less

I have very mixed feelings about this vet. The first time I took my cat there was to get spayed. Even though my cat had been improperly spayed before and was in heat at the time, the surgery cost, with a check-up, less than $200, hundreds less than other places. The vet was very gentle with her during the check-up, and did a great job. I did have to ask to borrow a cone, as selling/suggesting one isn't standard practice here. The second time I took my cat there was because she had diarrhea and was scratching her ears a lot. This time the vet was really rough with her (grabbed her by the neck and shoved medicine down her throat without telling me what he was doing, and just generally manhandled her during the check-up) and rude to me, telling me he didn't know how I dealt with my undisciplined cat, who obviously freaked out and scratched me because he was so rough. He also told me she might have ringworm (she didn't) and sold me human medicine for $10. It was really hard to get him to answer my questions about what was wrong with her; he just told me to do as he said. This place is hit or miss. It is significantly cheaper than other places, but I'm not sure if I'd go back. I left there crying, and my cat wouldn't go near me for a couple of weeks because she was so traumatized by the visit. If you get there 10-15 min before opening you will be fine. Dr. T is the most reasonable vet I have ever met. He will never order unnecessary tests leaving you with a gigantic bill and try to sell you more after like other places in the city. This is not a place for animals or humans. I'm going to keep this short because thinking about it makes me sick to my stomach. My 2 year old cat (still a kitten basically) injured her back paw on Tuesday. She came home after 15 minutes outside couldn't put weight on it and her paw appeared fanned out. Clearly in pain as well. I took her immediately to Dr. T who I had seen twice before for annual shots. I knew he was known as a prickly person from prior experience and multiple reviews warning me, but the reviews kept saying he loved animals and was good with them so I thought we were in good hands. We were not. He saw her Tuesday 30 minutes after her accident and was immediately hostile. I attempted to tell him what I knew of the accident but he did not want me to tell him what happened or to speak at all. Since I knew he was a grouch, I just tried to keep him focused on my hurt cat. He examined her and told us to come back at 10AM the next day for X-rays. I asked if he had ruled anything out and he got angry. I asked if surgery was necessary if he would do it tomorrow while she was already under anesthesia from the X-ray and he got angry. I was upset and pissed that this seeming doctor couldn't have a basic clinical conversation but I gave up getting any answers. I did insist that he give her pain medication, which he did. We came back the next morning and he immediately got angry again and this time left the room and sent his assistant to send me away. The assistant informed me they wouldn't be doing any X-rays until maybe 1 or 2PM --that I would have to leave her. She was clearly not enjoying being here so I wished he had told me that the day before so I could have come at 1 instead of 10AM -- causing her longer suffering here -- but I didn't say anything. The assistant said come back at 4:30. Clearly there would be no phone calls to me once he discovered what was hurting my cat. I told the assistant that she was still in pain -- the pain med from the night before didn't seem to help -- and asked if the assistant could give her something. He said sure, sure and left the room with her. I came back at 4:30 and doc and Mrs. T were there. I asked how she was and Mrs. T said be quiet and let the doctor speak. I stayed quiet to keep the peace and he proceeded to give me what turned out to be -- no surprise -- the absolute wrong diagnosis. He said, "it is an old injury to the back right paw. It's calcified and frozen in place. The injury is not painful." -- Yes, he actually wrote on her diagnosis "painless." He told me she was walking on it fine and that there was nothing more to be done. I reminded him that the injury occurred on Tuesday right before he first examined her so it was not an old injury and that she hasn't been walking on her leg since Tuesday (clearly he didn't watch her walk either). I gave up and gave him my credit card. I just wanted to get me and my cat out of there. I asked for the X-rays and he said no. I said I need them because I'm going to need to take her somewhere else and he said have them contact me and I'll send them. (Later I found he was only willing to mail them which would mean she'd suffer more days while waiting for the X-rays, so I went back and insisted that he give me the X-rays we had paid for). So here's the real diagnosis: she injured herself on Tuesday, dislocated one of her middle toes pretty badly. The X-rays were unreadable so we had to make new ones. She was in considerable pain and needed narcotics and as soon as she got the right pain medication -- after suffering for almost 3 days -- she was clearly relieved. We go today to the specialist to fix her toe. And if I hadn't gone to a doctor this 2 year old would have lived a life of disability and pain. This person is not fit to treat animals.Read Less

I generally go here because of its proximity, but nothing about this vet would make me choose it over another. It's extremely small with only one room to see patients. That's okay, as it is a small business. The problem I have though is the lack of timeliness and enthusiasm that is shown here. As if the people opperating the business don't really want to be there. My biggest issue yet was when I went there last and the male vet handling my toy dog, grabs him by his tail and yanks him up to elevate his back end! I immediately put support underneath my dog, so he wouldn't be injured, but the male vet never said sorry. In fact, the only thing he said to me the entire time was when he questioned the reason for my visit. He even picked my dog up to take him into a back room without saying anything to me or telling me what was going on. I found that very odd and uncomfortable.Read Less

He stitched up my kitten?s spay surgery site WITHOUT anesthesia, while she screamed!!! If you care about your animal, you won?t go to Petworth!!! My female kitten was spayed at Petworth, unfortunately. She was sent home with NO written post-surgery instructions. I took her back the next day b/c she ripped out the stitches as soon as we got home and had a gaping raw open wound all night long. I had to call an emergency animal hospital to find out what to do since there is no emergency number at Petworth (they don?t care!) The emergency hospital told me to get an Elizabethan collar so she won?t get down to the internal stitches. It would have been nice to know ahead of time what to do. The next day at Petworth, the doctor told me to wait in the waiting room and took her downstairs without any discussion or explanation of what he was going to do. I could hear my cat screaming downstairs from the waiting room, behind the closed door. He stitched her up WITHOUT anesthesia! When I ask if he had done it w/o anesthesia, he said ?Oh it doesn?t hurt. She just didn?t like being held down? and then he ushered me out the door without letting me ask any further questions. I came back to ask him to at least help me put her Elizabethan collar back on so she wouldn?t do it again on the drive home and he had the guy mopping the floor help me. When I asked for written post-surgery instructions he said they didn?t have any. When I asked why not he said just wait for Maureen to come (when?) and she?d tell me something. I called Maureen later and when I complained she told me that no one twisted my arm and forced me to come there. Let me tell you, they don?t care about you OR YOUR PET. Don?t believe that they do! He doesn?t even give you an itemized bill or an emergency number to call if something goes wrong later. If you get out of there without a problem, you are lucky! He?s a real cheapskate (no anesthesia, no itemized bill, no printed post-surgery instructions, no employees other than Maureen (sometimes) and the mop guy), but interestingly I saw on the internet that he bought an $850,000 house this July 2009 in the worst economy in history! It seems all the cutting corners pays off well for HIM, that?s for sure. It may be a LITTLE cheaper at Petworth but it?s not worth the agony that you AND your pet will go through. My little kitten is now passed out with exhaustion from the whole ordeal and hopefully not in pain. Go at your own risk but don?t say you didn?t know!

Read Less

Love Love Love this place! Dr Thornburg and his wife have been all of my animals Dr's for years since early 90's (oops I'm telling my age lol) Dr Thornburg is very direct no nonsense kinda guy, some ppl take it the wrong way. The prices are always outrageously low for the services they provide and I think that between the prices and the Dr knowing what he does and is good at taking care of my doggies I will be forever returning with my fur babies.

The exam went well. we had a chat about Khloe and addressed her anal gland problem. We had a chat about her cardiac health and the need for teeth cleaning.

Read Less
