I adopted a rescue and chose this as my vet because it was so close to my house. They also offer waive the initial $70 visit fee for rescues. Big mistake. The initial interaction was not great - the vet tech never introduced himself (I thought he was the vet I had an appt with until the actual vet arrived) and kept forgetting information (ie, he weighed my dog and then when inputting it in the computer said "what did he weigh again?" Luckily I had been paying attention.) When the vet arrived, her bedside manner was awful. She kept asking me how I could have let his ears get so infected - keep in mind I had owned this dog for less than 24 hours, which I tried to explain repeatedly. He had indeed been neglected by his former owners but they acted like I was the one doing the neglecting. They also insisted, based on my dog's eyes, that he was 10 or 11 and that I should get him on a senior dog diet bc he was unlikely to live longer than a year or so. I know that with a rescue dog the age is always up in the air, but having had senior dogs previously I knew this dog wasn't 11. I asked them to look at his (very healthy) teeth to get a better idea and they refused, saying they could tell from the eyes. (Spoiler alert - I later took him to a different, much better vet and without giving them any of this information asked how old they thought the dog was. After looking at everything - including his teeth - they concluded he was probably around 7, which is exactly what I thought.)They also told me he had a heart murmur, which is true. After I declined to see a cardiologist "just in case he needs heart surgery" (I was sure he did not and am right so far) they insisted he needed a variety of senior dog and cardiovascular tests. I didn't think he needed the full scan of senior dog tests but agreed because if something was wrong, I of course wanted to know - better to be on the safe side. His tests came back perfectly healthy though they still sent me a suggestion last week that I take him to their cardiologist just in case. They also took forever to give me his test results and when I called to get his record a few weeks later (to take him to another vet) they sent me the records for another dog.Side note - a few years ago my friend had to put her dog down and they ended up misplacing a portion of the dog's ashes. Like, they gave her what they said were the ashes and then called months later asking when she was going to get the rest of him . She warned me not to take my dog here but they're so close that I hoped it was a one off thing. Clearly it wasn't. I am giving them two stars because they give the "free" vet visit for rescue dogs, but just be prepared for them to tell you your new dog has a host of issues you need to pay for and act like you're a terrible pet owner.ETA: I just remembered that they said his ears were in such bad shape that he would need six months of follow up appointments and medicine to clear it. I put him on the meds they recommended and took him to a different vet for the follow up, about 3 weeks later. His ears were clear (lab tested and proved). I can't help but wonder if the results would have been the same at a follow up at Union. Read Less

My yearling pup, Maddie, had a rapid onset of vomiting and bloody diarrhea that became increasingly severe on a Wednesday morning. I called my regular vet, which has two locations - both of which were closed for professional development with no means for current clients to contact any of the vets in case of emergency. So, I called around the area, hoping one could fit me in and I could avoid schlepping Maddie to an emergency animal hospital. I called Union Vet and explained my dog's symptoms. They immediately understood the urgency and offered to fit us in at noon that day. Not only were they accommodating, but Dr. Mortola and the techs were exceptional. Dr. Mortola was thorough efficient, and, most importantly, accurate in her diagnosis. She got Maddie hooked up to an IV ASAP and called me with updates. The techs were also wonderful with her, highly competent, and professional. Dr. Mortola called each day for several days after to check on Maddie and provide me with updates on any test results. She was also very clear and up front about the costs, which, given the circumstances, were quite reasonable - and certainly much easier to stomach than an emergency animal hospital. While there are a number of good vets in the area, I truly appreciate Union Vet fitting my pup in, doing their jobs very well, and being open and available when I needed them. Some of the "five star" vets in the area may have lovely offices and staff, but Union Vet proved their competency and reliability in one visit. Maddie and I will definitely be back for (hopefully less urgent) check ups. Read Less

Vets are expensive, but as far as Union Vet goes you definitely get what you pay for. I have been going to Union Vet for a few years now. About 2 years ago my cat got very sick and needed emergency surgery. Union Vet was amazing. They laid out all of my options and let me choose. I did not feel pressured to spend money on something I did not want to, which I know can sometimes be an issue at vets. Furthermore, they are open 7 days a week and understand that people have busy schedules.  They also offer walk in appointments (for a higher price) if you cant get an appointment/need to come in ASAP. I've been bringing my little fur-baby, Pippa, here for about two years. We always have a positive experience with the front desk staff, vets, and vet assistant. They even scheduled me in for a an appointment within a day of me calling and are open on Sunday morning! I have an especially anxious little baby who hates when new people touch her. So getting vaccinations and test run is extremely challenging for her. Nonetheless, the vet and his assistant were very calm, understanding of her anxiety, and very gentle with my little one. You can really tell that they care about the animals with the way they talk to them and try to calm their anxiety. Read Less

I think it speaks really highly of Union that our puppy literally drags me in there every time we walk past - and the front desk staff are always happy to give pets and treats when we do stop by. We've seen three different vets there and a number of different vet techs, and they have all been wonderful. We adopted our puppy without really planning to, and scrambled to get his vaccines and basic care figured out. Not only did they guide us through the early days and what to expect, but the puppy package is a steal! $200 for all basic puppy vaccines, 3 fecal tests, and 4 exams (and at the time we started, they had a rescue discount)! This was our backup plan after the first vet we picked couldn't schedule an appointment for weeks, and I'm so glad we ended up here. Union Vet is absolutely awful. I would recommend taking your pets anywhere other than to Union Veterinary Clinic. We have 3 pets -- 2 cats and 1 dog. We'd been customers at Union Vet for years, but it's taken a nosedive and they couldn't care less. The 5-star & 4-star reviews you see here are either years old, or written by the doting family members of current Union Vet employees. Don't be fooled.Upon meeting their terrible front desk staff, you'll immediately wonder if you made the right decision in booking your appointment at this place -- spoiler, yes, you did make the wrong decision. The front desk is rude, wait times are long (long!), parking is non-existant.All of that has actually always been the case, but their doctors used to make up for it. Once Dr. Kats left though, that also changed.Just yesterday morning Union Vet charged me a premium price for a urinalysis--nearly twice as much as other (better) clinics. Nearly 48 hours later, we have no results for our little puppy, and the front desk staff is telling us that the results were sent to the doctor and that we'll just have to wait for a call -- and that it will "probably be tomorrow."That's after they inspected a chipped tooth, confidently told us that it would require surgery, and referred us to offices wanting to charge upwards of $1200 for a tooth-pull. We visited 2 more vets, both laughed at their "expertise".  Thank goodness we did, our little girl's tooth fell out just last week -- her mouth is doing great! No $1200 surgery, lol thanks for the advice, Union Vet.Long story short: spend your money elsewhere. These folks charge FAR more than their competitors, and they do not care about you. We've left forever. Our 3 pets are seeing other vets, in better, more comfortable facilities, for a fraction of the cost.I could not give this place a worse review. Please, do yourself a favor: Don't Go To Union VetEDIT 7.26.2018: Just received a call from Union Vet's manager--note that this is 2 days after the original post, where it had already been close to 48 hours. Our dog has gone for over 3 days without a diagnosis from them, and on this call--instead of providing a diagnosis--they were combative, insisting that they did call (except they didn't have our phone number down correctly, despite us spending money there for years with multiple pets).Just go to Capitol Hill Animal Clinic .com. Don't deal with these clowns. They also delete negative reviews from their Facebook page. Laughable, if your pets lives weren't in their hands. Read Less

I loved Union Vet for years when Dr. Kats was our regular vet.  She was so good that she mostly made up for terrible front desk staff, parking issues, and long waits.  But she left, and we had to see a new vet for the first time when my kitty was diagnosed with diabetes and it went terribly wrong. Long story short, Union nearly killed my cat.Diabetes in cats is treatable, but it involves the owner injecting the cat with insulin every 12 hours, so it's a huge learning curve and it's scary.  I started with almost zero education or support from Union.A couple of days later, I was racing an unconscious, barely breathing cat to the Friendship Heights ER.  On arrival, they told me that my kitty's blood sugar was so low it was undetectable.  If I hadn't been home when she crashed, she'd be dead.  A year and a lot of experience with managing feline diabetes later, I now know just how terrible Union's care was. The vet prescribed double the standard starting dose of insulin, discouraged me from home blood glucose testing, and failed to do even basic education on hypoglycemia. And Union's crappy care came along with obnoxious, judgmental guilt-tripping because I was worried about how to manage a diabetic pet while working a demanding job that requires travel.  Rather than help me figure that out, the vet acted like I was supposed to be a full time, stay at home cat mom who never went out of town.  Yeah, right. So while I had years of four-star experiences with Union, they completely failed when it counted.  We go to Atlas now. We started here in 2006...Always a very pleasant experience. You can tell that they genuinely care about your pet. There are a lot of very kind, helpful and humble/respectful (no attitude) people at this vet practice. My cats do not like getting shots, and they all go out of their way, and work really hard together as a team to gently handle my cats shots and examination (my cats will fight them, and they pony up and put on gloves and handle it like magicians). They are both very kind & gentle to the pets and to the pet parents. Rebecca at front desk/receptionist has been there, what seems like a pretty long time, and she has always been very patient, gracious and understanding with all my concerns (about dental procedures) & (all my changes in appointment) scheduling.Dr Gross has been a truly wonderful and caring vet. I had my cats neutered here, which went very, very well, as well as a total of (4) dental cleaning/extractions on my (2) cats over the years, and again, no issues, and also really fair prices; one cat needed (6) teeth extracted, and I could tell he was going to need them, b/c (2) of his teeth were very loose and almost about to pop out anyway, and the final price of the bill was a lot lower than I expected it to be. They genuinely seemed concerned and to really care about my pets, I have always felt. I have boarded my cats here years ago, when I needed to for about 1 week, and again, no issues at all, and my cats appeared to be really well tended to; and they took the time to baby them, as they kept me posted on them, and how they would play with them, and let them walk around and hang out, when I called to check on them. I am willing to drive all the way clear across town to go here, b/c I know that they will treat me, and my cats with very much the utmost in both care and concern. I don't ever mind waiting for an appointment, b/c I know that there are unexpected emergencies that they are I am sure dealing with, taking care of the needs of other people's pets, with the same care & concern as they do with my own...I have recommended people to go here, and they were just as happy with the treatment and services they received on their dogs/cats. Union Vet Clinic front desk people lack common decency, courtesy, & compassion, with no training in dealing with health and emergency situations. My dog went in for a procedure to collect a urine sample directly from the bladder (by injecting a needle through the abdominal wall) to send to a lab for testing. My dog came out in so much pain that she couldn't move! Dr Lehmann misdiagnosed this for "fainting" & strongly recommended I bring my dog to Friendship Hospital for emergency treatment, possibly for heart condition. Almost $1500 later, my dog had no heart issues. In fact she had a strong heart for a six & a half year old. But what happened to the urine sample that caused my dog to freeze in pain? Oh, "it was sent to the lab but due to human error" the test wasn't done. Huh?? Really? Wasn't the order checked for fulfillment? You charged me $400, my dog went into shock from the painful traumatic experience, & the test wasn't done? My calls & emails to the office were not returned until 12 days later when I spoke with Dr Cohen, who concurred that the lab f**ked up! Drs Cohen & Gross then asked "Do you want to bring your dog back to get another sample?" HELL NO! OMG! To give this Clinic a one star review is giving it too much credit. If you have any love for your pets, I would not bring them to this over-priced & irresponsible place. Run the opposite direction! FAST! Read Less

I went to Union Vet for about 7 years with my two male cats. They always insisted that both of them needed dental cleanings, which I was always wary of and didn't want to do. They finally convinced me that one of my cats really needed a cleaning so I decided to do it. Within 10 minutes of him being in surgery, my cat died. They told me that they did all of the necessary tests beforehand and thought he was healthy enough for the surgery. But then they supposedly took x-rays afterward (which I never saw) and found his heart was enlarged, which caused him to die. However, I'd been going to this vet for years and no one had ever even hinted at a heart issue. In fact, he was given a clean bill of health (except his teeth) at every visit. I still feel so guilty for sending him here that day. I've now changed vets and will never recommend Union. Read Less

WARNING: DO NOT GET ANY MEDICATIONS HERE! In general, Union Vet seems overpriced, but they have a “minimum dispensing fee” of $23 “intended to cover the cost of the medication, the bottle, the label, the technician’s time, the doctor’s time, etc.” and they “normally don’t” disclose this fee to clients because it’s “always tough” to keep clients informed of all of their policies and charges. So if your pet is prescribed a drug that only costs $3, they jack it up to $23 just because they can/want to. There is no such thing as “minimum dispensing fee” at human pharmacies, and if it was truly a fee to cover the quoted services above, then it would apply to ALL prescriptions they fill. Also, I think the doctor’s time is sufficiently covered in their nearly $80 exam fee. This is just their way of charging people more money to increase their profits. Apparently this type of fee is common in veterinary practice, but they are still 50% more than nearby Atlas Vet who charges $16. They also have a very disrespectful way of handling inquiries and complaints. They had no interest in keeping me as a client (readily offered to transfer records if I wasn’t happy) and accused me of a “threat and blackmail” because I said this type of non-disclosure may cause me to go elsewhere and I may post a review so clients know about this hidden fee if they won’t disclose it (I never specifically asked for a refund so not sure how I was threatening or blackmailing them). Overall, the services are only average and not worth the overpricing and disrespect you receive. If you do go here, definitely ask for a written prescription to fill elsewhere (CVS, Harris Teeter, online). Read Less

After 25 minutes of waiting, and 17 years of patronage, we finally left with our two dogs in tow, forever.  No one at the front desk informed us how long the vet would take or gave us any updates and everything looked utterly chaotic.   And they had squeezed in nonemergency visits that pushed all of us back.  This is becoming the norm here. We also learned that Dr. Kats was no longer working at the clinic - and she was hands down the reason to go.  The current chaos of the clinic is not worth it - there are much better places now to take your dogs where your time is valued (we noticed only cat people were in the overflowing waiting room, perhaps they are willing to wait longer than dog people). In June 2014, our 5-year-old black Labrador went from enjoying mile-long jogs to jogging with a intermittent limp to complete reluctance to even jog around the block. Because of the abrupt change (intermittent limping without injury and sudden reluctance to exercise) we took him to see his primary care at Union Veterinarian.  They told us he was "a healthy 5 year-old dog," and that "dogs don't like going on long runs; they prefer short sprints." I left confused because he did enjoy going on mile-long jogs, but I deferred to the doctor and stuck to dog parks and our walks. This pattern continued on for the next year: intermittent limping that would come and go without injury. We took him back to the vet and always left without them finding anything wrong and was told more over and again that I just have a "sensitive dog." Fast forward to May 2016, our dogs intermittent limping became more frequent to constant to non-weight bearing. Finally, the vet was concerned that he may have torn his ACL.  She prescribed him an anti-inflammatory and said if he doesn't improve after a week that we can either bring him back for a sedated xray to confirm the torn ACL or just go straight to an orthopedist given her assessment.   A week later, our beloved puppy dog was diagnosed with osteosarcoma.  According to the National Canine Cancer Foundation, "dogs display distinctive lameness (limping)...and reluctance to exercise. Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone tumor in dogs and larger breed dogs have a high propensity for the disease."   He was a black lab with long legs and a barrel chest.  He was neutered very young (I think around 3 months old) before puberty at the animal shelter before we adopted him from.  All of these factors were red flags for osteosarcoma. But instead, I left his vet a handful of times over the past 1.5 years with the explanation that I have a sensitive dog.    Our sweet 6-year-old lab passed away just 4 months after diagnosis.  It gives me great grievance that he showed symptoms 1.5 years before finally being diagnosed, only to be told repeatedly that I have a sensitive dog.   It's hard not to wonder if someone had just recommended an x-ray back in 2014, or any one of the other times I brought him in, if he would still be with me today. Once osteosarcoma is diagnosed you're given an extremely poor prognosis (months) and given two options: to put your dog down or remove the tumor (palliative amputation).  99% of the time when osteosarcoma is diagnosed it has already metastasized to the lungs.  At the time our dog was diagnosed there were no signs of metastasis to his lungs but still the cancer was so aggressive it took his life just a few months later.   I'm a registered nurse and learned years ago that any abrupt changes from what your 'normal' is can sometimes be a sign of something but also nothing.  I was always relieved to find out there was nothing wrong with him each time we left the vet but again, in retrospect, I wished I had listened to my intuition, maybe taken him elsewhere for a second opinion.  At the time, I was more concerned with hip dysplasia given his physical disposition and Labrador genetics so we started him on a glucosamine chondroitin supplement for hip and joint support. I knew him better than anyone else and partly blame myself for not fighting harder for him just like I fight for each one of my patients. I was more concerned about being that "crazy dog lady" and just listened to the vet in fear of being that overbearing, stereotypical dog mom.  Leaving there time and again being told I have a sensitive dog made me think maybe all of this was in my own head. We went from having a happy, healthy, full-of-love-and-smiles dog, to a death sentence.   You know your pet better than anyone else and when you take them to a doctor you're entrusting them with their knowledge and expertise.   We lost an invaluable, beloved member of our family.  I'm not saying Union Vet doesn't do great things but this was our experience and I write this in hopes that other families and their beloved puppy dogs won't have to endure the devastation we went through. Service is OK, prices are outrageous and they nickel and dime you to death. I left my cat for boarding and they asked if I would like him to get his rabies booster while he was there, I agreed, assuming it would cost $25 or so like it does at the humane society or ASPCA. When I picked my cat up they had charged me $40 for the vaccine, $70 for a "pre vaccine exam (my cat had been examined there twice this year already" and another $25 for benadryl (benadryl!!) because a set of earlier vaccines (not rabies) had "made him lethargic. I was shocked when I picked him up and got the bill. They did not warn me that an exam or any additional charges would be made. To make things worse, the vet finally called me two a week later to answer my questions and she was very rude to me and and completely unapologetic about her staff failing to disclose everything to me. I don't usually post negative reviews but this place has unfortunately gone very downhill over the last few years. My cat went from being "one of the sweetest cats" a Doctor had ever met to being "aggressive and no longer welcome for drop offs" in a year period. Which is quite a turn around - and probably a lie since I have never even heard my cat growl. Mind you I felt pressured to come get her immediately even tho I was in the middle of a move simultaneously combined with the reality that my grandma was dying! Great empathy.I'm now facing another reality of a lost job and my dog recently got tapeworms. Now where I'm from this is generally a routine thing to do at the vet, but since my dog's vet is in KC he gets his annual there. Was willing to fax over his records and everything. Just wanted a diagnosis and the medicine and was even willing to pay the expense of that. Instead they insisted that he needed a full exam! Ridiculous. The only alternative provided (going to the low cost clinic) was not a real alternative for me (I do not have a vehicle). Imagine my surprise when I contact my friend who is married to a vet tech and she informs me that you can just buy dewormers at petsmart. Unbelievable. I get that we live in a very wealthy city and I am one of those wealthier people. But exploiting people for money because they love their pets is the worst kind of crime. I can only imagine what tests they would come up with that my dog needed before they could even give the medicine that you can buy at a grocery store. This is not responsible behavior.I read a lot of sentiments that are the same here - that this is a place that will just add up as many things as possible to stick you with and I kind of agree. In fact, with my cat, they were getting ready to do exploratory surgery on some sort of "bloating" she had before they amputated her tail (she was a stray I found on thanksgiving day). I told them that she was a stray that I had found in a trash can the night before and that I was willing to shell out the 800 bucks for amputation but not the extra 500 for some sort of exploratory surgery. They strongly advised against it, warned she could die. She didn't and even if she did at least I saved her one miserable night in a trash can where she got to cuddle with me.Avoid avoid avoid avoid. Our first visit here was a walk-in. We were fostering a bottle baby from the Washington Humane Society at the time and he had been exposed to another bottle baby with Panleukopenia. We brought one of our big cats here to be given booster shots and have the vet do a health check. That visit was fine, we paid the invoice and they threw in free nail trimming worth $20. Four weeks later, we were getting ready to move to California and needed health certificates for our cats so they would be allowed to board the flight. She wouldn't just give Ginny a new health certificate (airline demands can't be older than 10 days) so we ended up paying $200 per cat (we have 2), even though she had just seen Ginny a month before. Can't fault her for trying to get as much money from you as possible, I guess, but if we move back to DC, she won't be our vet anymore. Read Less

Amazing! I adopted my dog from a rescue and my dog's first appointment was FREE! My dog also got sick about two weeks into me having him, and they took me right away and helped my puppy feel better.  Even after he vomited in the waiting room, they were very helpful and ensured me not to worry about it, and cleaned it up while I comforted my dog.  I was expecting it to cost an arm and a leg, but it was actually so reasonably priced (they gave him medication, an IV, and an additional shot to stop everything) for the services I received.Used to stop in on our daily walks so he wouldn't be afraid of the vet when we went back for routine vaccines.  Cannot speak more highly of them! We moved from Florida in September and, naturally, one of our dogs got sick fairly quickly with a mild eye infection. Through some of my boyfriends colleagues we were recommended to Union Vet, so I made the call. The woman who answered the phone was kind and efficient, booking us a same-day appointment.Dr. Kovalik saw our German Shepherd mix and utterly surprised me by getting on his knees to introduce himself to Beau. Most vets wouldn't deign to get on the floor. He was very gentle and soft-spoken with my dog and laid out all the possibilities quickly, without pushing one procedure over another until I'd heard all the facts. I opted for the most moderate option of eye drops to start and Beau's eye cleared up in the 2 weeks Dr. Kovalik quoted. I saw this same doctor in January for only the second time, this visit with our Schnauzer mix, and he remembered me and Beau, another surprise I've never experienced from other vets.We also brought Beau in for a more serious visit on a Saturday in October and saw Dr. Lehmann who was equally as gentle with him. She took the time to get as much information as possible before suggesting a battery of tests, fluids, etc. We opted for the moderate option, trying to not spend our weekend at the vet, and ended up having to take him to SouthPaws later that day for more intensive care. However, I greatly appreciated Dr. Lehmann's soothing approach to a very sick dog and we left feeling informed and comfortable with our decision, even with the subsequent emergency vet stay and bills.I have to give them 4 stars because of the parking situation. Being so close to Union Station, I strongly urge them to consider designated on street spots or in the back. I frequently leave my house 20 minutes early for the ~5 minute drive because I have to do laps looking for a spot. It's super stressful, which can translate to over-excited pets, too. Read Less

I've been taking my pets here for years (large dogs and cats) and have consistently had excellent service. Their prices are on par for the DC area, but they are flexible; for example, if your pet just needs routine vaccines they can be seen by a tech and you don't have to pay for a full exam. The vet techs are super friendly and have handled my pets well. They have always taken my questions and concerns seriously and I feel comfortable speaking with anyone on staff. Also the facilities are very clean and I always see staff washing their hands, which you would think is a no-brainer but having gone to other clinics sometimes the hygiene is sub par. One of the reviewers mentioned they took stars off for a doctor indicating they weren't sure they could perform complicated surgery, but I take this as a plus that they will honestly tell you if your pet needs to see a specialist. They have a large network of specialists they work with and can refer you to. The specialists we've been referred to over the years have also been great to work with, and my pets medical records have been transferred without issue between Union Vet and other service providers.

Read Less

It was this attitude that made up my mind to find vet services elsewhere. Read Less

Read Less

Located 1 block from Union Station, this vet couldn't be any more convenient. If prices were just a tad lower, I'd give them 5 stars. That being said, we'll stick with Union Vet unless we move out of town Read Less

I've been going to Union vet since 2012 with my snarky, grumpy Basenji mix. My first two years, I only made appointments for routine checkups and vaccinations and they were great- the hours are fantastic and it's not difficult to get an appointment on the weekend or after work. They're also more affordable than other vets I spoke with in the area and everyone there is very, very kind. This summer, my dog had a major operation with several complications and I am so grateful for Dr. Gross and Dr. Kovalik. They have had my back the whole time - they're always available to answer questions, problem-solve and help me figure out medications. I've had to make several last minute appointments, and the clinic has always been able to fit me in.
