I hate this vet. She stole all my money. She is use to dealing with people who are rich or well off not people who are living paycheck to paycheck. She did way more test on my tortoise then what was necessary. She didn't ask what I could afford. She told me my tortoise was sicker then he was and made me give him injections instead of oral medication. She should have discussed this stuff w me a d asked what I was more comfortable with. I brought my parakeet here because she was very sick. Unfortunately she needed to be euthanized due to her illness. The staff and doctors here were extremely caring and proffesional. Brought my Hahns baby to Dr K because her office was down the street from pet eye specialists. She was very kind and worked with the eye specialists to operate on my bird promptly to ease her pain. As a follow up after the surgery it was discovered that the skin needed to seal to opening had not been “roughed” after surgery and so the sealing process was redone and resealed. I paid an additional fee to redo this process which possibly was not done properly the first time. I do feel that the price for eye surgery was fair but the necessity of the second although not exhorbitant should have not been necessary. Dr k has a procedure that she uses to keep the perimeter area around the missing eye clear and although the possibility of a possible problem was not explained after surgery, I did feel there was one and brought her in for an examination. The area was clogged and the doctor managed to clear the problem.I have used other bird vets in the area who did not understand this “cleaning/clearing process I made an appointment specifically because I wanted to see what this pricess entailed. I made the necessary payment via telephone when scheduling the appointment and when meeting Dr K she advised that my bird had gained a lot of weight And did I want an x-ray. I responded affirmatively. The bird was taken back and after a while returned wrapped in a towel. The Dr showed how she dropped a small amount of water in the nare with the birds head tilted downward. Great i think. A bill is dropped wordlessly on the table with the pet carrier but no further explanation. Attempts to get a response as to the findings of the X-rays have fallen on deaf ears. The outrageous bill for $338 was promptly paid. After several attempts the xray and records were forwarded to another vet with who diagnosed a possible spleen problem. Professionalism......hardly. Tom Cronenwett the techinican at dr k vet office is a mean guy he seems too rough with animals i don't like that guy i have a bad feeling about him. I watched dr. K yesterday on tv on a episode about baby the squirrel and Tom was very rough with baby and forcefully pulled her out of the thing she was sleeping in and then Tom was squeezing baby's neck really hard i was like what is he doing to her he's hurting her he's suppose to be a good doctor and treat the animals with loving and gentleness and care he's seems very hot headed. We are so thankful we found Dr. K! After not being able to find a vet in our area who would treat pigs, we traveled from Naples (1.5 hours away) with our two pigs so our youngest could be seen for suspected entropion. Dr. K was confident and so patient with our little guy. Pigs are quite the divas and Dr. K gets down on the floor to their level to make treating them as easy on them as possible. We returned the following week for his surgery. The film crew was there and they were all very nice and respectable of our nerves given surgery day. Dr. K allowed us to stay in a room with Benson for the few hours before surgery and allowed us back in with him during recovery. This made it so much less stressful on Benson. I had a emergency with my juvenile Tegu that wasn't faring well after a few days of purchasing him. Turns out the cage setup that was sold to me at the store wasn't a FULL setup. So the humidity wasn't being regulated properly, but they told me all the adjustments that I needed to do. Also, my little guy had mouth rot! They squeezed me in thankfully! Called this place up today to bring him in, and they said if he comes in today it's an emergency visit and they charge more. Are you serious!!! It's not like I'm a new customer. The doctors and staff are hands down the kindest and most compassionate people, and truly care about you and your pet. Unfortunately I lost my lovebird that I’ve had for 19 years today, due to a chronic illness, but Dr. Thielen and her staff have been so kind and good to me the whole way through. I brought her in as a new, emergency patient a few weeks ago, after deciding her previous doctor wasn’t a good choice, and they took her in immediately. They were so honest and reasonably priced, I’m so thankful for them. They did everything to save my little best friend and make her as comfortable as possible in her last days of life. Dr. Kelleher was very nice, took her time with us, and explained everything and gave us an opportunity to ask any questions we had. We brought our two rabbits to be spayed. The great thing was they schedule the check up in the morning, you leave them, surgery takes place in the afternoon, they call you when it's over and tell you what time to pick up. They demonstrate how to give the medicine and supliments. They also gave us a folder of basic rabbit info for housing, feeding and behavior. Very satisfied. Read Less

I love this place!They saved my cockatiel from a nearly dying after his usual vet wrote him off to a kidney problem, when in reality he had a fatty liver and just needed some lifestyle modifications. Horrible Customer Service Skills. After bringing my pet to them a week ago, I had to call to get the results of the culture done to make sure the correct medicine was being used to treat an eye infection. Dr. Thielen took the call and told me the culture had just arrived 5 mins ago and I was going to get a call. SURE!! I worked for an animal hospital before. I know it does not take that long. She proceeded to tell me it was the correct medicine and I said it's been a week and she does not show any signs of improvement. She then argued with me saying she has to be getting better and if not then maybe it is a viral infection instead of a bacteria infection. Then why did you just tell me it was the right medication. Her attitude quickly changes and continues the conversation with a very negative tone basically talking down to me and then mentions cancer. So in other words they really have no idea what is wrong and after spending $371 they want me to bring her in for more tests. When trying to speak over her, due to her speaking over me, she abruptly hung up.I called back and spoke with Dr. Kelleher who again spoke over me and defended the actions of Dr. Theilen. If they dont understand pet owners concerns and frustrations then they should not be in business. Absolutely horrible customer service. No customer should be hung up on or argued with because they have questions about their pets health. Needless to say I will never return here. We boarded our bird for four days, asked for a checkup and grooming while he was being boarded and were told by staff it would be done.  However, when I went to take him home (four days later) I was told to wait 45 minutes to meet with the vet because no checkups are performed without the owner present.  I opted to reschedule, got my pet and realized no grooming had been done.  I asked for the grooming I had originally expected, waited for that, got my pet again and the beak hadn't been filed. I asked for the beak to be filed and the groomer/assistant came out and rolled her eyes at me when I pointed out the sharpness and length of the beak.  She turned around and walked away with bad attitude saying dismissively that she would "do it again" if that's what I wanted.  At this point I got bad attitude instead of customer service, so I left because I didn't want my bird handled and groomed by someone angry. We contacted this clinic for assistance with possibly sick ducklings we found motherless. I wasn't planing on writing a review; however, I am still upset that they would not assist us even though we were willing to cover all expenses. We have since found a non profit organization who willing assisted us. We are forever grateful for them and their services. We supplied them with a donation for the ducklings care. If you have a hedgehog, this seems to be the place to go get check ups. The staff is relatively knowledgeable, and the vets ( Dr. Susan Kelleher and Dr. Lauren Thielen) definitely have experience with hedgehogs. During the summer and throughout the year, there are students who shadow the vets. As they accept emergencies, there is always a bit of a wait even with an appointment. When I got my first bunny 20 years ago I though she was awesome. I take care of my animals - never took it lightly. As the years went by and my bunny was nearing end of life - her fees escalated beyond reason. She preyed on my love for Max. To the thousands. Now Kimba is older and has issues - arthritis being one. So do I. She wanted a $400.00 exray to show my bunny has arthritis. Mine was $50.00. This women has gotten larger and larger over the years and prays on those like me. My bunny is in extreme pain and suffering. She does not care at all. I offered to make payments. No. She refuses to even see her. She cares nothing for bunnies - she cares for her bottom line. I would have paid all I could and all the rest. I asked for payments. I just got approved for credit. I WILL NEVER PAY KELLEHER ANOTHER CENT. I have an umbrella cockatoo. Dr. Backos cares for his birds and his birds companions. So I have no problems caring for my animals. SHE just wants your money. Read Less

Wish I had read Olivia D. at yelp review prior to boarding my bunny at Broward Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital. My bunny passed away after a 3 day weekend stay on 9/19/16. He was not well care for, his bottom was wet and he could not lick, hop, and was totally unresponsive upon returning home. He passed away few hours later. Before I received him, Dr Kelleher performed laser treatment...made me wonder what else she would do for a profit! Olivia was right about her 'incompetent and offensive treatment of the animals she provides medical help to' as well as 'being belittled and overcharged'. I had a cuckoo bird fly into my window at work, and she was really injured, not just stunned. I called so many exotic vets and wildlife care centers and no one would help her. Doctor Thielen didn't even blink before saying she would help. I offered to pay for the services and she only asked for a donation. I truly am grateful to see a vet who actually cares about the animal more than money. She seemed excited to help, saying she's never worked on a cuckoo before. She said she will keep me posted and if the cuckoo bird is ok, she will release her by my work in case she has a family. Dr. Theilen was very professional, as was her staff. The first time I went to Broward Avian and Exotic it was because our local vet in Hollywood was not open at the time they were switching locations and my little rat at the time was acting really weird and we didn't know what was wrong but we went and Dr. Kellegher found out immediately what was wrong and unfortunately we couldn't save my little girl so we had to put her down. The third time I went there I took our next rat to our local vet because she was acting not herself and our local vet said nothing was wrong and to just watch well I knew my little rat was not fine so I took her to this vet and I saw the other female doctor there and I told her what was wrong and instead of turning me away they did the tests and X-rays and found out that something was wrong. So my experience with you guys has been an awesome one so far better than my local vet when mine is a exotic vet too. But you guys are hands down the best. If you own an exotic pet and live in South Florida I highly recommend this office. I have been bringing my pets here for almost 4 years and I have seen all 3 doctors and they are all great. Dr. K is the best, she has a passion for this and a love for animals that is beyond compare. Dr. Diaz is wonderful, he saw both of my bearded dragons when they became sick and each had their own congenital disorder, when it came time to make the tough decisions I was truly amazed at the compassion he had for my beardy and for myself. I have come unannounced as an emergency and gotten right in and I have also had an appointment and had to wait. When you need an exotic/avian vet, I think that Dr. K. is just the best around. I'm a retired PA, and sure understand just how difficult a job vet's have (I worked for a large animal hospital while I was in school). But a few good ones, like good medical professionals everywhere, develop the skills, knowledge and over time, "sixth sense" needed to be really great practitioners. I think the two vets here are really knowledgeable, talented individuals who care deeply about the well being of their animal patients.Judging (reviewing) veterinarians can honestly be a really tough call. After all, a veterinary practice is really just another "cottage industry" and one must constantly be on the lookout for practitioners who would take advantage of people who love their pets just to make a dollar.Often times clients wait too long to seek help w/an ailing pet and then blame the vet on a poor outcome. Some clients always feel as if they are being overcharged because they do not have a good understanding of just how much it costs to maintain a veterinary practice. Like any medical professional, not every patient can be saved. This is especially true with animals where interactive communication is simply not possible. But looking around at the equipment, staff, services and other interaction I overheard while I have been there, I think my review is as valid a call as I can make. All in all, everything put together, along with my "gut" tells me that the vets here really care about what they are doing. I will certainly continue to take my Macaw here for care.Basics: Appointments are generally easy to get and they certainly accommodate emergencies or really sick animals. Let me start by saying I read each and every review that has ever been posted about this vet's office and I went in keeping all the claims of incompetency and price gouging in the back of my mind. My personal experience here has been the exact opposite of any of those claims. I was referred here by my normal vet due to my chinchilla being suspected of having teeth problems. Of all the vets I have ever seen, Dr. Diaz was THE MOST knowledgable doctor I have ever brought my pet to. When you own an exotic pet ignorance (whether on our part as a pet owner or the doctor's) is dangerous!! I often have had to correct my vet's and have made it my life's mission to learn as much as I could through medical journals and established veteran chinchilla breeders, in order to make sure that my pet is healthy and happy. Dr.Diaz not only truly understood my exotic pet's needs, but executed any and all treatment in the most efficient, compassionate and knowledgable way. He made me feel like he not only knew what he was doing but that he actually cared for both my pet and my feelings. Yes, having an exotic pet will bring about a more expensive vet bill then a cat or dog, but that's not price gouging; it's the cost of being an exotic pet owner. We don't have to do yearly shots or flea and tick medicines so in the end it really evens out. I will not be bringing my 3 chinchillas or bearded dragon to anyone else, EVER! As I have been reviewing today's events, I simply cannot believe the negligence that occurred at your hospital today. Cookie was clearly in pain for a long period of time. Eventually, after a full day of dealing with her pain without pain medication(except for the initial post op meds that were given 24 hours before), her little body went into shock and she died within 10 minutes of our return home. When we asked the technician during discharge why Cookie was trembling, she said that she had been doing that on and off throughout the day but that Cookie was "fine." She was clearly not fine!!! She was going into shock and NO ONE at the hospital seemed concerned at all. Dr. Diaz didn't know that trembling in a rabbit is NOT normal? Your interns and techs don't know that trembling in a rabbit is not normal? You are supposed to be experts in rabbit care and this, even as a nurse with NO rabbit medical experience, seems obvious to me. We then asked for pain medication for Cookie because we know that rabbits don't handle pain very well and I was horrified that it wasn't part of the discharge treatment plan. We were finally told to just use the TINY bit of leftover Metacam that we had at home from another doctor, IF she needed it. If she needed it????? She was a post op rabbit who went through a very hard surgery(as you stated on the phone). She should have been on prophylactic medication throughout the day to prevent bunny pain, shock and eventual death. She did not die of pneumonia, she died of shock from severe untreated pain. This could have been prevented and I am horrified that I put our little Cookie in the hands of such unconcerned and negligent staff members. You should know that rabbits need pain medication after surgery and it wasn't even on the discharge prescription list. I expected so much more of you and your staff. Cookie made it through the surgery fine...she just needed proper care post op and she didn't get it. I am sick over this because I didn't listen to the horrible reviews that I read online about you and your team. Instead, I trusted you to keep Cookie comfortable and free of pain. Cookie was our sweet little girl and I had faith in you to take proper care of her, just as I would have if you had a child in my NICU. Now, I must live with the guilt of taking her to Broward Avian and Exotic for treatment. And, I will make sure that no one I know will make the same mistake. Read Less

I can't even begin to express how amazing this vet office is.I called in late last Friday night to bring my hedgehog in the next day, and they called me back right at 7am to schedule for a noon appointment  (my hedgie had been bleeding from her privates, and so they were very kind and got us in right away). When I came in, I was taken to a room immediately, even though they were overbooked that day. They did x-rays and several other tests, and long story short, they treated me and my hedgie extremely well and were completely honest, forthcoming, and yet gentle when breaking the news that she had tumors.They recommended several different options and I was able to take her home for a few days with antibiotics. When I noticed her not eating any more treats, I called Dr. Diaz on Tuesday morning and he called back as soon as he got in, asked me several questions about her well being, and eventually recommended that we put her to sleep before she began to experience too much pain. I came in that afternoon and, again, they put me right in a private room (so I wouldn't have to cry in the reception area), and they very gently explained the process and allowed me as much time as I needed to say goodbye.When he returned to the room, they had taken a clay print of her paws and etched her name into it, as a memorial. I opted for a private cremation and I should be getting her ashes back this week. Throughout all of this, they kept me well informed about the procedures and estimated prices, and NOTHING was charged but what they had already said.I really wanted to write all that so I could say this: I have experienced the loss of a pet more times than I can count (over a dozen dogs, mostly Rotties), and this was the best experience I have ever had with a vet.Not only was Dr. Diaz extremely sympathetic to me, you could also tell he genuinely cared for my hedgie and wanted the best options for her.A few days after the cremation, I received a handwritten card in the mail from Dr. Diaz, expressing his sympathies. He also made a donation to exotic animal medical care research in honor of my hedgie.As a person who has had a lot of experience in vet offices (both as a customer and employee), I can honestly say this is one of the best ones around. If you want your bunny to live do not take them here!!I brought my bunny in for a neuter.  He came home paralyzed from the waist down.  They are liars!  Dr. Thielen is the ring leader of the lying.  My bunny went in healthy and to get neutered came home paralyzed and died one month later.  I will never forgive them for their irresponsible care for my precious innocent rabbit!  I would write more but I will break down. I have waited almost 6 months to write this review as i didnt want my emotions getting involved. I was sent here from another animal hospital for my sick guinea pig. I cant describe enough how HORRIBLE my experience was here. After bringing in my pet, they did about a 30 second evaluation on him. The Dr. came in and said "there could be anything wrong with him", and handed me an estimate (prepared insanely fast) for $500 for an Xray and visit. This was just to "diagnose what was wrong". Of course even for a broke college student there was no price i wouldnt pay to see my Guinea Pig get better, so i said go ahead. After that, she said, "Im not sure but it looks like pneumonia (respiratory problems)". Here is the treatment id recommend. She then hands me an estimate for 3 days overnight care and a total of $1500..... you have to be joking.... I instead opted for no overnight care but still paid over $250 extra for the nebulizer and many other medications. It was clear to me who is not a vet that pneumonia wouldnt cause a pig to stop eating or pooping for 2 days. The Dr. there clearly puts $$ over the care of the animals. It was as horrible an experience as i have ever had in my life. The guilt they tried to put on me for not keeping him there overnight STILL after putting down $750 for a 10 minutes guinea pig visit was appalling. Read Less

great care. sometimes i feel like they're overpriced...but they're always on top of everything. staff is cordial and caring, vets are knowledgeable and patient. they email on their days off if you need advice. thank you very much for taking care of my bunny. i wouldn't trust him with any normal vet that doesn't specialize in exotic pets. This is the *BEST CLINIC ON EARTH* - run like a hospital, not just a vet's office.  Dr. Diaz came in on a SUNDAY to check on Coco (my bunny who was in stasis.)  The staff is SO friendly and understanding - I'm sure I drove them nuts with my calls but they were always SO sweet and compassionate.  Dr. Diaz even called today to see how Coco was doing (I picked her up yesterday)  WHAT a caring vet!  They have three exotic specialists there so you can ALWAYS get a hold of a specialist, so no frustration there! I cannot recommend them highly enough and, even though they are 30 miles away, from me, I will continue to take my bunnies there. Read Less

My daughter and I had a great experience here. The entire staff was so friendly and helpful. The doctor was so accommodating when her bunny got very sick and stayed after they'd closed so that she could bring him in to make sure he'd be alright. I was very impressed with the care that was given and would recommend them to anyone! Read Less

Dr. K and her staff are very friendly and caring.  They went above and beyond to help my rat who was injured under the care of a supposed small animal doctor in Oakland Park.  This is the only exotic vet I trust with my animals.  You will be very pleased with the quality of care received. Read Less
