This little veterinarian office is quaint, well staffed. The Vets are thorough and truly seem to care and love the pets that come in for help. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly and patient. I enjoyed the fact that they spread the appointments out so that the waiting room is never over crowded. I needed a urine sample from my female rescue, Lailai, but couldn't bend and squat fast enough to get one. My Puppy first visit and the last. I felt like the Vet's didn't know what they were doing ( as the Vet is taking my puppy stool she didn't have on any gloves), Dr. Lance was tryna tell me that basically the adoption adgency didn't know what they were talking about,he also concluded I didn't know what I was talking about ( he asked me why I call PetMeds to find out about a particular Medicine my puppy was given to take), and then while checking my dog for ticks he claimed he found one ( I mentioned that's not accurate and found another). I took my 2 cats for vaccinations and certificates to fly.  Everyone was very nice, and the Veterinarian was kind, and helpful to me and my 2 boys.  I've had bad experiences with other vets, as one of my cats just hates them, but this group worked with me and we were able to accomplish everything with relative ease. 2017 Update: I have to say again that I am so grateful for this veterinarian, which is one of the few remaining privately owned practices in the area; most are now owned by big corporations with their own agendas. The Deer Run doctors strive to do what is best for your pet, whether you just need a vaccine or your pet is sick and needs laboratory tests. I can never thank them enough for the care they give to my animals. I've been a client of the Deer Run Animal Hospital since I moved into the neighborhood in 2008. I have five cats, some of them elderly, so I am at the vet's office pretty frequently. Drs. Weidenbaum and Schaff do a great job - they complete thorough exams, ask a lot of questions, and offer great advice for helping my old moggies stay healthy and happy. Services I've gotten from them and their staff include regular shots and checkups, surgeries, laboratory tests and X-rays, dental work, and I have boarded animals there as well. The technicians, Candee and Sabrina, have been there for years, and they show genuine affection and kindness to every animal that comes through the door. We brought our new puppy to this veterinarian's office. The experience was just ok. Nothing bad, but nothing stellar either. I felt like the employees were just "doing their jobs" instead of really caring about the animals. We're at a new vet now and the difference is astounding. You can tell everyone In that office genuinely cares about our pup. Also, one occasion, a dog peed in the waiting room. I told the receptionist, however no attempt was made to clean the area. Not a good experience you have some vets that genuinely care about animals and then you have some that are only in it for the money in this case they are only interested in money, extremely over priced I wouldn't recommend going here they gave my dog an unnecessary vitamin D shot that cost $156 dollars, we never got to the root of the problem unless I spent thousands of dollars first, also they didn't let me be in the room with my dog while they gave her this shot all I can hear was her cries she was fine and acting like her normal self when it was over so I wouldn't necessarily say they mistreated her but i would have been more comfortable being there to comfort her during this process. Dr. Shaff and staff are amazing. We have 6 dogs that are cared for and loved by each. They were beyond amazing when our Great Danes, Bella and Zeus were expecting their first litter of pups. They helped us and cared for them through out the birth and after. They delivered 2 "miracle" pups in the office a day later then the other 7. Candee has been an extreme help. I contacted this facility today because it was listed on my adoption paperwork to receive free suture removal for my new 4 year old dog. I asked about a titers test and the cost. I was put on hold and then told that they don't do it often but the cost is $250. She insisted that I will need to make several visits before the suture is removed and that the dog will need a series of vaccinations therefore I didn't need to have the titers blood test done.  She then mentioned the Bordatella. I informed the receptionist that my dog was given that vaccine already.  She got very defensive about the whole vaccination thing so I politely told her that I will have to call back. This is not the way to ease the mind of a new client. I understand that veterinary medicine is not the most lucrative form of medicine to get into.  One must have a passion but sometimes all the add-ons and up sell of unnecessary medicines and inferior specialty formulated food to make your living from people who are also trying to making a living for themselves just upsets me.  Dr. W may be a fine doctor but clients need to be arm with some knowledge and his front desk staff need to be a little less pushy, in my opinion. I went online and did some research and found Brookside  Animal Hospital.  They were happy to do the titers and explained that they typically do it on animals 8 and older. They have an annual care package that includes the shot that is less than the titers test at Deer Run and to top it off suture removal is free so I wasn't getting any great deal to drive an extra 30 minutes for "free" suture removal. The office is clean and the staff in general are nice people. The reason why I won't come back is because of the persistent sales pitch and lack of communication with clients. This is based on my experience as a client and my friend who was also a client of theirs. Several times my friend asked a simple question, she didn't get her answer. The vet was quite rough handling her new dog without at least explaining why he needs to perform the physical exam this way. This is especially shocking for my friend as her other vet never did this to her other dog. I understand if explaining the same simple procedure to every client can be repetitive but this was her first visit at this clinic and we had no clue why her little dog is being smacked on his sides. It may not hurt the dog but it looks rough to us. Lastly, we are aware of the new vaccination guidelines published a few years ago. Annual vaccinations are no longer recommended for healthy, adult dogs and cats. When this was brought up, there wasn't a healthy discussion of why pets, including indoor only pets, need yearly core shots. It just is. I understand the vet's position on vaccines and that's fine on how he wants to run his practice even though other vets are now changing their vaccine protocol to every 3 years. But communicating to the clients and giving reasonable options to the clients so we can make the best decision for our pets should come first. Vaccines are not without risks (injection-site sarcomas for cats). There are side effects, from mild to severe ones. That should also be advised to the clients. Customize a health plan that works for each pet instead of taking a blanket approach regarding vaccines to all will help build more trust between clients and your office. Read Less

I have been going to Deer Run Animal Hospital for over 4 years now. I trust them completely and will only consider them when it comes to both of my dogs' wellbeing. Dr. Weidenbaum is the kindest man and genuinely cares about your pets, and Dr. Shaff's extensive knowledge and thoroughness is outstanding and impressive. Both Candee and Sabrina are joys and always have a smile on their face. When my English Bulldog developed head tremors, Dr. Weidenbaum worked endlessly to diagnose him and get him the proper treatment. My French Bulldog came into contact with a Bufo Toad this morning and had a very scary, awful reaction. I immediately called Deer Run Animal Hospital, and Sabrina asked me to bring in my baby immediately. My frenchie began to have seizures in the car and was not looking good. Sabrina had prepped everything, ready for our arrival, and was waiting outside for us when we pulled up. She immediately took my frenchie and started to save her life. Sabrina and Dr. Shaff worked amazingly on my pup and saved her. Sabrina really went above and beyond to help my frenchie. They allowed me to sit with my baby the entire time, and never once rushed me out or asked me to leave. You don't find this type of service just anywhere! I am so incredibly grateful for Dr. Shaff and Sabrina's outstanding work! They saved my frenchie! So many of us look at our "fur babies" as our children. And, sometimes it is difficult to know who you can trust when it comes to your child's health and wellbeing. I went for my first visit with my new puppy Teddy Bear yesterday. I had an 11:30am appointment, I waited at the office until about 1:15pm until the Doctor actually came in to see us. The doctor was friendly and seemed knowledgable, and he was good with my puppy. He recommended Nexgard flea/tick prevention- my puppy Teddy developed an extremely hard and bloated stomach, extreme lethargy and was not acting himself within an hour after taking the Nexgard dose. He has not touched his food since yesterday afternoon at his last meal(16 hours ago),when he took the Nexgard dose. The doctor did not warn me of symptoms that could arise from this and did not tell me it was a new product. While I don't blame the doctor for the side effects of the medication, I do feel that he should have warned me about them. Also, an almost 2 hour wait time after a set appointment is unacceptable under any circumstances- I received a "thank you for your patience" and that was it. Time to find a different vet. Read Less

Worst Experience! Owner took absolute and complete advantage of the situation. My cat had to be catheterized due to a penile obstruction. Vet Weidenbaum said it was a do or die situation and immediate action had to be taken or I can kiss my cat good-bye. He then told me it would be $1,700 for everything and he wouldn't start the process until I give a down payment of $500.00. My cat was in his practice for a whole week. In the 2nd day of his stay, Vet Shaff called and explained I had to pay an additional $1,700 because my cat had taken the catheter out and he needed to insert a new one. Keep in mind that I am being charged for the stay and care at the facility. After a few minutes of going back and forth with Shaff and pointing out how I shouldn't be penalized for their incompetency and decision to understaff, I demanded that the owner contact me. Weidenbaum called and said Shaff will insert a new catheter free of charge (shocking). I picked up my cat after a week with a bill of $1,750.00. After getting home and reviewing the bill there were multiple discreprencies within the bill! e.g. 2 charges of Urinary Catheterization Fel. Blockage, one on the first page for $250 and the other on the second page for $80. In addition, there were four Penicillin Procaine G charges with different prices. He also declawed my cat WITHOUT consent and billed me for it. When he was approached as a liar he began to talk about saving my cats life and how I should be thankful. They run a very unethical practice with incredibly rude and unprofessional front desk staff. A point of reference to the $1,750 charge is a vet in broward county who charges $180 dollars for catherization! Wish I would've known sooner. Do some research before choosing a vet and whatever you do, STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. Read Less

The clinics had charged me for items my dog didn't have done, when I was presented the invoice the front desk lady didn't give me time to look over it, she just snapped it out of my hand and when I say the price I almost started to cry... I told her I could pay for it and to not continue with the shot, she then said let me see what I could do for you and she then came back to the room and reduced the bill $106! That was nice but also a shock to know that they were over charging me and didn't do anything till I freaked out with the price. I have an eighteen year old mainecoon. , she is my baby girl even more now since I lost my husband in 2013. last week I had the worst experience in my life which turned out to be the best. molly had a cyst on her neck for a very long time and at some point last week it burst, the smell and look was terrible and I was so worried about taking her to a vet in Deerfield because of her age and stressing her from seeing a different doctor for the first time. well a little bird brought me to dr. lance and assistant Sabrina and turned out to be the best experience ever. I was hysterically crying knowing my baby could have cancer and had to have surgery. dr lance was so attentive to molly's needs as well as mine. he did everything possible to make sure she would survive the surgery, with exrays and blood work. after all the results came back, I have never been more confident leaving her in his and Sabrina's hands. she was so well cared for and will make a full recovery. dr lance said he treats his animals as if they were his own and yes he did. Our yellow lab pup, Baron, was diagnosed with distemper when he was approximately 3 months old. He is now 5 months old  -- and today just received his lab report that he is "negative" for canine distemper virus and his viral load is "undetectable." When Baron was first diagnosed, Dr.. Lance Weidenbaum told us that while the prognosis for dogs with distemper is not very good, he would do all that he could to help us give Baron a fighting chance at not only survival -- but having a good quality of life. And that is what he has done. Dr. Lance contacted a vet neurologist to help him in developing a treatment plan for Baron. He has been available by phone for the numerous times when Baron was having a "crisis" or we had questions. And he continues to consult with the neurologist when we call and say " we read about such and such a treatment -- what should we do?"Most importantly, Dr. Lance has shown a compassion and caring for Baron's well-being that is truly reflective of who he is as a person. We have seen this in the care he has provided over the past 4 years for our 3 other dogs. He truly cares for the animals he sees as if they were his own.  I should also say that his office staff -- Sabrina  and Candi--are just as caring. I happened to bring one of our dogs in to their office today after learning of Baron's lab report --and Sabrina cried when she saw me... I began using them as my vet back in 2005. I have to say I've been to other vets prior to finding Dr. Weidenbaum and Dr. Shaff,and have not been happy. I am finally pleasantly suprised with the care that I always receive for my pets. The staff is very friendly and caring and they treat me like family. My puppy had horrible kennel cough that turned into pneumonia. I was so upset and thought I was going to lose my puppy due to the fact that all the other places we took him to gave me astronomical prices to treat him that we in no way could afford. I took my new rescued dog to this Dr. because he was throwing up the morning after I brought him home from the shelter. I had never experienced this before with a dog and when I took him there, this Dr wanted to treat him for Parvo, a couple of hundred dollars in treatments. My dog had been vaccinated at the shelter, and later I learned he had also been tested and the negative results were on the paperwork I brought with me. How is it a recommended vet from Animal control, doesnt know dogs come out of there already tested for these illnesses prior to adoption? I have never sat in a vet's office and cried like I did that day. The problem was my dog was stressed with all he had been through and the change to my house and new food.(Never even suggested to me by this Dr) There are Drs that are passionate about animals, and there are some who are in it for the money. My impression of him is he is absolutely in for the money. I reported my incident to animal control for review. WARNNING !!! - Do NOT USE !!! This is a horrible group. They gave our puppy a shot then dropped the 7lb 3month old puppy on the floor right in front of us and said nothing.
